Banking app requesting root - HTC EVO 3D

Hi, I'm currently running aokp build 36a, hboot 1.4 and s-off. Everything has been working great, but just randomly this morning my u.s. bank app tried to get root access. I havent used the app in days. I denied it access, and when I launched the app, it didn't request again. Is this anything I should be concerned about? Thanks so much!

Its so they can steal your money dude!!
Just playing. You might wanna on on the play store and read the apps description and see if it mentions anything about root access.

Too bad, no money there to steal. Hence my not using the app recently.......anyway, play store comments are full of other users having the same issue across multiple devices. Its fishy to say the least. I'll uninstall till next update. Thanks again!

I had Facebook request root a few times. I think it just made a call that super user misinterpreted.

Google wallet is down if you would have looked in the q and a section. unsupported is ok secure element errors are what you need to watch out for.

It will still work. All it's saying is that Google Wallet does not support rooted phones. Do not grant Wallet SuperUser access and you'll be good to go. I've used it in the state you're in right now. On a friendly note, there are at least 3 threads I can think of off the top of my head that talk about this exact issue. You don't wanna get flamed for starting a new thread for an issue that's already been discussed numerous times. You just have to search the threads for the answer. I'm telling you this in a nice tone but some will borderline disrespect you for starting this thread. Just keep that in mind for future reference if you have any issues.
Thanks, I saw the threads about wallet being down but didn't catch anything about not being unsupported.

should i revoke root acces and try again or just delete updates and start over rooted and still wondering if its the continual errors or if i'm locked out.

Question about MKSH (shell I assume)

I updated SuperSU and now when I open the web app I get a root request "MKSH ip x.x.xx.x is requesting root permission" can anyone help me? Should I grant or not?

Exact issue for me too.
I'm a bit busy at the moment to do the in depth searches I normally carry out when finding an answer!
(this was the first result I had time to find)

same here .. but I'm using an HTC Sensation with custom ROM.
Same here as well, but I am using an evo lte running meanrom.
Me too, One S (S3) with Custom ROM... Really annonying, cause everytime it requests Root permissions my screen goes on
Me too - it started with banking software, since that was the first one I opened after update, so it scared me!
I have an HTC One S and I get that popup also, it seems to be triggered by wifi for me, turn wifi off then back on and it triggers the request. I'm not sure if I shoud allow it or not.
Wow seems to be something new then. I denied it because I have never seen it before I searched and found some stuff about a shell. I dont know much about this but it seems we might find the answer here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 Im working so I cannot do much searching but google directed me to pg 97 of this thread, if some1 has some time to scan through and finds it let us know.

Discussion of that message starts with this post in that thread. I just updated to 0.97 and haven't seen it yet.
Chainfire, the developer for SuperSU, seems to think it's HTC specific and not malware, but hasn't identified the source as of now. He does explain a change in 0.97 that might be causing it to show now when it didn't before in this post.

Just like everyone else...I got it after updating SuperSU on HTC ONE X and first time using wifi. Denied the privileges...did not know what it was.
Same here. I got it after updating SU and reconnecting to my WiFi
May I ask if anyone of you is using adblocking apps such as AdAway? I'm getting this as well on my One S (S4) and it started with an AdAway definitions update, so I'm wondering.

Is there a solution for this? Or what this message is even? Is it safe to grant permission through SU?
getting same msg. Htc Evo lte running latest Fresh Rom.
a little more info here
Just found this article

Trouble in the Air?
This MKSH (Shell) I think is messing around with internet and required connections/downloads from internet, I denied it and when there is a need for download say any game it interferes (here it keeps on wiritng all that uneding list of permission being denied!) Quite fisshy I guess, so please if anyone has an idea what the hell this newly introduced shell does do reply and inform what to do about it!
Thank you
No, it’s not mksh that is “accessing” the network. Full answer in this thread.

HTCMode = SMiShing app

Hey all,
There's been quite a few reports of people getting duplicate SMSes in the ViperDNA ROM thread. I think I have, unfortunately, found the cause. The other day, I got a SMS from someone not on my contact list/nor anyone I recognized at all. It was like spam email, but from SMS with a link to some site to boot. I brushed it off and just deleted the message. I was reading Android Police's new article on Android anti-virus apps. I was surprised to see my $15 Kaspersky app doing so poorly, so I uninstalled it and installed the #1 rated TrustGo. I did a scan and it found a "High Risk" threat in HTCMode. I followed the link provided by the app and, sure enough, Google has acknowledged the vulnerablility.
This vulnerability is being kept very close to Google's chest, so you don't find much about it doing a search for it. It certainly isn't getting a whole lot of press, but it's gotten some.
I tried to delete the app via TrustGo, but it failed. So went into Titanium Backup and froze the app and then was able to uninstall it. I've rebooted a couple times since uninstall and there doesn't seem to be any repercussions from getting rid of it. I highly recommend you do the same.
Just a heads-up. Protect your shiny DNA and your personal info/data,

Perhaps HTC has nothing to do with this software and (as if they care) the developers are trademark infringing when they use it in the app. They merely use the HTC name to legitimize their software and make you think it should be on your phone (some Sense software.) I'm sure on the S3 it's called SamsungMode or TouchMode and tries to make it look like it's part of TouchWiz.
If HTC did create this software, then the SMiShers have just found a way to exploit a vulnerability in the software as they did with other brands. As the video and write-up details, this is not HTC-specific; but Android-wide.

Neither was I until yesterday and I was quite pissed a free app outperformed one I paid $15 for. When it found the vulnerability my anger turned to humility and concern.
All it does is allows apps to send u fake spam texts. I get that type of junk anyways without this apps help.
On the DNA I think its the HTCModeClient.apk. I'm gonna remove it on my Rom today and see if my text work normal.

So reading this seems really shady that they would do this. So I'm not rooted on this phone and I don't want to root because I enjoy this phone how it is. So obviously I can't freeze this so if I disable it, won't this be the same thing as freezing it?

I think you need to be on the ota software for it to work. And viper is still in beta testing for it.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
yes it works on the new 2.04 software update.. and on said ROMs that are based on the OTA... only problem is if you wipe data and don't use a program such as Titanium to back up your paid data apps.. then you will not be able to download it from the Playstore b/c the DNA now shows "not compatible" in the playstore... I don't think the DNA is officially supported but something they did in the OTA lets the app function normally..
Thanks for the info. At least I can tell my son hope is on the way with the new viper update.
You can also find a 3rd party website that offers the AB SW in HD for free and be able to play with the VZW OTA update.

I understand that but where else would you download it other than from the Playstore... if that's where you bought it? If it's legit then I would like to download the apk so I can sideload it on my DNA as I purchased the app the day it came out..

ok so all the sites I see on Google are hosting pirated apks....
If your 3rd party site is legit then why no post a specific link?
I kinda understand what you are saying.. that if I have purchased the apk via the playstore then it is ok download the apk via another source.. but I would contend that these sites are not set up for that reason and supporting them is not helping the issue..
*edit*
I am not trying to start an argument but surely we can agree that pirating protected content isn't cool... I am sure most "devs" on this site would agree...

Are you serious dude? If you legitimatly purchased the software you're worried about downloading a pirated source..... I'm sure no fbi or some swat team is going to bust down your door. If you're so concerned with what's right and wrong about some piece of software you already paid for then just message whatever company and just deal with it so that you have some piece of mind and don't lose sleep over downloading a apk you already paid for that you some how think it will support the pirates you're downloading it free from. Also my recommendation for your next phone go with iphone.

Thats how I got mine and woking great
I downloaded it from Amazon App Store, that's where I got all my Angry Birds games from.
FYI
Rovio updated the app as of March 11.. I can now download the Star Wars Angry Birds HD and it plays just fine... I am on Newt's sense 5 port ROM but I don't think that makes a difference..
I didn't have any problems playing before the recent update with the Hatka kernel on my DNA.
The latest version, which is 1.1.3 works fine on every Rom I have tried it on

UK Banking apps for rooted phones - your experiences please

Hi, I actually haven't rooted my S3 yet but in updating to jelly bean Barclays is convinced that I have!
Anyway imo they have a totally arbitrary and blinkered approach to security so I'm ditching them.
What I'd like to know is your experiences of bank apps and if they work with rooted handsets (i plan to root in the future).
I have the HSBC app which works but is limited to giving mini statements only.
Ideally I'd like an app that is as fully featured as possible, allowing transfers and the like. I've heard that Halifax offer this but I can't find info if it works with root.
Any experiences would be a great help and much appreciated. Thanks

I have as well barclays and hsbc ? have you found anything by now about Halifax? Although i don't like barclays from the same reason (I had an unrooted s3 and note 3 and several times they where saying there rooted), i heard barclays has good security.

You can check out the Xposed Framework and the RootCloak module to see what apps are supported to hide that you are rooted.
It's not just the UK. Most banking apps won't work when rooted for me either and the xposed mod doesn't help with either of them.

There is a reason they dont work. Rooted devices are not as secure as non rooted devices. This is why they refuse to allow rooted devices to work with the app.
I can understand that but a windows computer you can consider it more dangerous and there you have root access.

If you look deeper no you dont. In most windows you are not even marked as the owner by default. That is why you have o run some programs with admin rights.
Plus Root can be exploited without you even knowing, There was once a glitch found with root that an app could be granted root access without you even knowing. IT would not even popup the root request but it would be granted root rights with no trace.
I don't want to create a debate or anything.... We are getting of topic anyway.
Now on the topic itself...
Hsbc app works good on rooted phones. From what I know barclays is the only uk bank app that does not work on rooted devices!
Halifax and Systemless root
Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 rooted. Up until now, the Halifax Banking App has always worked since the rooting method I used with "systemless". In the latest update of the app, it is now telling me that I am rooted. Anyone found a way round this please?
I run both a rooted phone and tablet in the UK. Santander does not run after their latest update. Most are starting to use the Google safety net API so I would expect HSBC to block soon (they are just a bit slow). The only one I know that actively recognises root and let's you carry on is First Direct.
The irony is I can run them all on an ancient phone on 5.1 cos it's not rooted only missing 3 years security patches!!!
