Design, what is your opinion now. - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

When the Evo lte was first announced many people where disappointed in the design (look). What is your opinion now that you have one?
I originally thought the photos from the launch event didn't do the design justice. I thought it would look better in person. Now that I have one in hand...this thing is sexy. I was originally disappointed that it didn't look more like the one x. Now that I have it in hand it would be a hard decision picking between the two. Not to mention this thing is light and thin. The build quality is like no other phone I have held.
What's you opinion on the look for those of you that have one in hand?

As someone who doesnt have both the Evo LTE and the One X (yet spends all his time on both's forums lol), I think I can offer my objective view: both phones look great but the One X has achieved something that Samsung can ever dream of: an iconic design. It's not just the material used, the size of the screen, how thin it is, it is the whole package that makes it achieve a very distinctive look.
In terms of hardware design, no one can beat HTC.

yea I have to say looking at pics of the evo lte I was not sure what to expect. But seeing it and holding it is just confirmation. This is a well designed phone. Thin and so light yet packs some serious hardware inside. HTC has stepped up their game big time.

I have mixed feelings about the shiny plastic on the top back. I think it looks great, but what a fingerprint magnet! The build quality and overall feel are great. It feels solid and light.
Overall, I'd have to say that I'm proud to be packing the "Franken-phone" ;-)

I hate the shiny part on the back... coming from the OG Evo 4G that would be my only complaint i love the new kickstand and where it is.

I love it. The only downfall is the shiny plastic but its not a big deal.I love how how thin it is.(no homo)

I'm a fan of sharp edges, so the screen where it meets the metal band is absolutely wonderful. While I hate the shiny back, the bottom 2/3rds by large makes up for it with the cold steel feel to it, while keeping grip.

I don't have one but I think I'm gonna hate the shiny back too. I always use a case tho so no big deal I guess.

You know, I don't think people like the back lol I assume they did this because the antennas are up there and they didn't want to have the same issues like Asus did when they had the metal back on the transformer prime. It would have been nice if they atleast textured the back the same way as the metal. Would have looked even better, I think.

It is a bit shiny, I like the design though.

I like the whole naked thing too but there is no way my phone would survive with out one..I wen't ahead and got the Platinum case with the clip...Seems to cover everything but the 3.5mm jack..im good to go

My 2 cents...... I think this device is sexy! I don't use cases, I prescribe to the same as viperboy in that department. The back isn't the best in the world but there are already skins for it that are sick looking. The rest of it is designed as good or better than any other device I've held in my hands. (that's been a **** load) The shape feels perfect in hand, the size is quite large but yet feels great against the ear. The addition of the camera button, kickstand and micro sd slot put it above all others in my opinion. And on top of all that the s4 seemingly can't be slowed down. Overall huge WIN for us as users and HTC!

Even though the shiny back is a little off from the rest of the phone, at least we don't have to rub our stomacks jump up and down on one leg and hold our phones upside down to make a phone call as apple had to do.

Lol how long you been a sprint customer? They generally fail two reasons I'm with them one is price second reason I have never ever had problems with them.customer service wise unlike when I had vzw

I think it is even better in person. People complain about the shiny back and I get that but so many people complain that all HTC phones look like the same boring black slab and have been calling for some kind of design change and I think this is great. When you see this phone you realize no doubt it is an Evo and that is great. I don't look at the back of my phone that much anyway even if it did bother me.

i think im the only one that likes the shiny black. once u hold it u realize the pictures dont do it any justice. the phone feels so well built and fits perfectly in the hand. and the design is incredible first day i had it several people were asking me about it and saying how great it looked. htc is really kicking ass with their new designs between this and the one line. ive played with the one s before i got my evo, almost bought it because of how great it felt and looked haha

I ****ing hate the back and whoever approved it is an idiot. Otherwise I love matte/soft texture everywhere else and the lightness of the phone.

I just wish the back had the texture/grip that the 3D had....person ally when i first picked mine up out of the box I was excited till I realized how slick the back of the phone is...that's an instant increase by 50% to the number of times I drop the phone...
Just a little texture on the non-removable part of the back of the phone would of gone a long way for me...

Which otter box are you using? just outta curiousity....
I had the commuter series.. Until one day my phone fell out of my pocket while I was biking, hit the ground and because the silicon was so stretched out from me simply pressing the power button my phone bounced face down on one end then the other and I ended up with some pretty nice scrapes on the body of my device. I was so mad! Needless to say I don't use the otterbox anymore and have switched to the Trident Aegis and love it. I'll never use an otterbox again!
I think I read somewhere that initial commuter cases had design flaws with the silicon and that it had been corrected but whatever... Trident is awesome.

changed my account lol, but i dont use otterboxes. i was just saying that as a reference... imho otterboxes are the most unreliable case out there. that and ive seen more than my fair share of phones in otterboxes drop a mere 3-4ft and break. i invest in ballistic cases, easily the best cases out. ive dropped my OG Evo from about 1 story up and it didnt get so much as a single scratch on the phone. ive also thrown it at a concrete wall just to prove how superior it is compared to other cases lol

[Q] General Build quality

Got my new Xperia S today, and so far loving it.
What are other owners finding the build quality like?
Might seems reasonable, the only niggle I have is the rear battery cover. The top edge is sitting slightly proud, in the centre above the camera lens hole, but it is all flush around all the other 3 sides (and it is correctly fitted in place). Its not massive but noticeable.
This leads to a creaking when you hold the rear. Worried it might get worse over time.
Anyone else's like mine, or are your's flush at the top?
Cheers

Same here, tiny little bit, just doesn't sit as nice as the other sides. Also noticed the black scuffs really easily.
Build quality is excellent..........feels good to hold it..........
My only complaint is the flaps for the USB and hdmi port.
It takes real pain to close them once they are opened.

When I took the phone out of the box, it was like... holding some kind of expensive new technology. I was thinking myself: "Don't you f...ing drop it".
Coming from a iPhone its slightly disappointing. If the htc one s was out I think I would have gone for that instead knowing the camera would be not as good. The htc is also quite alot slimmer.
I guess the xps has the spec and the htc the look in my opinion.

I personally don't understand the apparent desire for slimmer phones, I've had the HD2 for the last two years and I upgraded to the sensation xe very briefly before I returned it to order the xperia s.
The sensation always felt like it was going to fall out of my hand,I was gripping onto it for dear life lol.
In all of the two years I had my HD2 I never dropped it once or felt like I was going to drop it, and even though I've only held onto a dummy xperia, that also feels comfortable in the hand, so for me it's the xperia build any day.
Still each to their own

I agree entirely. To me, a phone should feel like a phone, not a piece of paper or a heavy credit card. I'm a butterfingers when it comes to phones, and if i drop it, I don't want it to snap in half.
My X10, which isn't a small phone, dropped a few times (give or take 10 or so), and lived, working perfectly. The Xperia S is a light phone for its size, but I love the size of it, and it works perfect with the size of my hands. It...feels like a phone should feel I guess. It may not be as durable as my X10, but it feels and looks perfect to me.
I'm a big sucker for the look and feel of a phone and tend to pick aesthetics over the actual specs. This phone has both for me
The only negative I have is indeed the port covers, but even then, I think it's something that I can adjust to over time.
But back on the phone size thing, it's not the size, it's how you use it!
I'm hearing some creeking underneath the the transparent bar. The Xperia black plastic. Hope it will last

Plastic is lighter and more durable than glass. iPhones have always had their build quality issues as well dont dont give me that. If you drop a plastic phone with a shatter proof screen protector, chances are it wont break. Drop an iphone from a metre and it shatters into a million pieces. Front AND back. Youre right. Nothing subjective about that.

I'm still waiting for my pre-ordered Xperia S and using my iPhone 4S. I guess I'm very careful with my gadgets but so far I have owned three iPhones (3G, 4, currently 4S) and all of them were kept mint through their life (without case, only using carrying pouch or in the pocket), my old 3G survived a couple of falls with just small marks on the silver bezel and the 4 survived its only fall without not even a mark or scar (granted it was like 2 feet).
Have you ever owned an iPhone? Even though one assume glass can break "more easily" I can tell you that unless you drop it more than 4-5 feet or you're unlucky (as with any phone) Gorilla Glass could probably withstand the fall with barely scuffs.
And what's better is that this Gorilla Glass won't easily scratch with daily use as many shiny plastics phones I've used (Samsung Galaxy S, Nexus S, Arc, etc.). One of the reason I'm sold on Xperia S is the matte plastics than I'm hoping feel more premium than others, and hopefully it won't disappoint me. I can tell you, apart from the iPhone the only other phone I liked its build quality was the HTC Nexus One, I loved how it felt in the hand! as much as I hated the Pentile screen...

The Ugly Plastic

Like many others, the top of the Evo 4G LTE is a major detractor. When looking for a way to fix this I came across this where they sanded the polycarbonate of the glossy iPhone to give it a brushed look. I'm curious as to how well something similar (using circles insteads of lines to make it matte but not brushed) would work well with the top of the Evo 4G LTE. What makes this worse is that in the video HTC published you can see a prototype with matte plastic and it looks tremendously better.
Gonna check out this link when i get on my pc. But sounds like a pretty good idea. Back when I had an ipod touch I hated the mirror backs because of how scratched up they got so i sanded it to look like stainless steel. Worked out perfect.
Although I don't like the shiny plastic look its not so bad I think I can live with it but if this ends up working good with the EVO maybe ill give it a shot but I don't think ill be the guinea pig haha

I thought so to but it does house the nfc chip so if anyone does make one it probably won't be cheap
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
It's not the NFC chip but just the antenna so third parties should be able to make a replacement part. The area near the lens worries me a bit though. Unless it looks better in person I think I will sand it.
Thanks for posting this. I was already planning to do this but now I have some instructions. For anyone who doesn't want to read the external posts, the process should go something like this:
1. Remove the shiny plastic back-cover
2. Acquire two small pieces of sand paper (one 800 grit and one 1200 grit)
3. Start by wet-sanding with the 800 grit sandpaper (use a forward-back motion)
4. Clean, inspect, and continue sanding until all shiny spots are gone
5. After you've gotten to all the tricky spots, let it dry, clean again with a soft cloth, and check out the results. This will produce a very dull finish.
5. If you would prefer a more polished finish, switch to the 1200 grit sandpaper and carefully re-sand the entire surface
6. Post pictures on xda.
I'm sure there will be third parties making backings. It'd be an easy way to make money too, if anyone is keeping track of this idea. I for one love the two-toned look.
I despise the two-tone look. I wish I'd never seen the AT&T One X in white. makes me hate the looks of the back of this phone that much more. If I get one, I'll be doing this or painting the back or something to make it look better.
If anyone is experienced with sanding, is the 800 anf then 1200 grit approach appropriate?

Yes, coarse paper first (800) then the finer paper (1200), I would test it out first. and don't forget this should be a wet sand with water as a lubricant.
I wanted to put in a request to Seidio to make some in a limited quantity but:
1. I wonder if they'll follow through?
2. Will it kill the signal advantage of the OEM's door?
3. Will it dissapoint (Still glossy, Loud, LOGO plastered, Weird etc.)?
That back peice is also part of my reasoning for wanting a white one.
i wonder if the plastic is a coated red like the original evo.
i thought it was neat with the original evo, you could sand to reveal red.
the back doesnt bother me, it'll be covered with a casing anyways.

I don't understand why people would want to put cases on their phones. It's the same principle as buying an expensive couch and 'protecting' it with a plastic cover or buying an expensive car and then installing neoprene covers on the seats. This is an awesome, well built phone. It was designed to be used 'naked'. If it needed an additional layer of clothing, HTC would have designed it into the phone.
I feel that if people would just learn to take care of their phones, they could enjoy using them the way they were designed to be used.
Anyway... my 2 cents. You have a right to disagree and, if you buy the phone, it's yours to do with as you please. But, personally, I just can't stand to see a beautiful smart phone dressed in a purka (a phone burka).
I'm probably going to sand blast mine as soon as I get it. if its just polycarbonate it'll turn out nicely!
Just wait a month or so for the Chinese to make a nice top replace and post it on Ebay.

blue/green/black etc Speck* case for HTC AMAZE 4G

Hello all. It's been a while, but I just got this gorgeous new case that I love. It's from a company called *speck that i've never heard of before. the back material is all fabric and the "frame" is a thick grey plastic. The only other color/design i've seen them in is a pink and white.
I really love this case. The fabric aspect is really stylish. My hands arent really ever dirty, and I keep my messenger bag/purse/pockets pretty clean, so i dont have to worry about the case getting gross.
It fits snugly and all the buttons/ports are easily accessible. An important factor is that the plastic frame sticks out above the screen, so if you drop the phone face down, the screen wont get touched. Hopefully the plastic is strong enough to not crack on impact. I'll let you know if i happen to drop my amaze.
If you want any other pictures, or have any questions i may be able to answer, please let me know.
XDA isnt allowing me to upload the pictures so here there are in an album on imgur. http://imgur.com/a/dO5eP

there are pinholes. I can take another picture when i get home. There are two in the plastic frame around the camera, and then another with its own frame.
The lack of designs are sad. I'd be more into a black/white/grey but this was the least "girly" of the two. The pink really bothers me, but the fabric is really nice. Feels great in my hand.

well its a certain style of case. I personally like the larger plastic frame and big cutouts. i had a case before with small cutouts and i just found it annoying. It's all about personal preference.

I was very disappointed to see the matte finish wear off after only a few weeks on my HTC one x. With this one I'm thinking that the back may be a scratch magnet. Anyone have significant scratching on the back yet?
in pouch all the time, no chance to scratch it
Carry mine naked (the phone not me) and not a single mark on it yet. It may be to soon to tell but so far so good..
I panicked when I realized that my keys were in the same pocket as my phone. But not a scratch yet.

No scratches on the body, but like the guy before me I accidently dropped my phone into my pocket with keys, I got a couple small little nicks on the bezel but you can only see them on an angle. I'm going to see if I can polish them out. I googled it and saw that a normal kitchen sponge with the one rough side gets them out, Also heard toothpaste and just ordered some aluminum polish.
Other people only noticed when I show them, and my GF said I have severe OCD because the nicks are so tiny. She is right. It's not really noticeable to anyone but me, but it's driving me insane!

I've been babying my one so I can't really comment, but
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EWqPpYVE08
hopefully this will mean it's rather resilient
I'm going to go see if I can find some information about the durability of the black one over on the international forum.
Not looking so good for the black one so far, it seems they chip really easily near the top above the camera. So sad, because its so nice looking.
I think I've seen finish problems on every single One variant thats been released from HTC...

Probably the same way it went with the black iphone 5
Judging from the one at best buy I would not say it is holding well.

Was that the silver or black one?
If the thing is going to looked chipped to hell in a month from normal use, I'll just return it now. My s3 started to chip the silver rim and I got rid of it immedaitely. I can't stand something that looks like crap for no reason whatsoever, actual damage is one thing but come on....
The iPhone 4 was a tank and was beautiful. Is this so much to ask from an android phone?

If it's a dummy version, it's clearly made with less resilient materials. The dummy model at my local Walmart looks terrible while the real phone at my local AT&T store is flawless.

Mock devices are identical except the internals. 99% of the time

This isn't one of those times. The buttons on the dummy phone are not usable, it's ridiculously light, and the feel is somewhat different. The real phone was sturdier and had functional buttons, of course. They were both set out on the same day in each store and the dummy looks terrible now while the real phone looks perfect. It's a pretty decent indicator of the dummy phone being made with cheaper materials.

I don't know what store this was... But the retail location I was at, the mock was dead on accurate weight. Buttons obviously don't work on a fake device.

I just don't believe that HTC would have spent the time to assemble a phone that isn't going to be functional since it apparently takes a lot of time to assemble the aluminum body for the HTC One.

No scratches on the aluminium surface but the beats audio red logo and writing have almost disappeared. White 'audio' writing still there.
I dropped my One on hardwood and it rolled over onto a brick ramp (I was at the entrance to a restaurant) and skidded down it on its back. There are some deep scratches on the back and scuffs, but it's okay. Definitely want to put a case on it if you plan on using it out on the street

The matte finish wears off much more easily because the material was plastic. Microscopically, a matte finish is just an unpolished, jagged surface. Since it's plastic, it's not hard enough to be able to withstand the forces exerted on it when rubbed by your pocket/hand/table long enough so it gets polished over time (check out a computer mouse that's been used for a long time). This is completely different than scratching or chipping, which is a complete removal or deformation of the material. The nice thing about plastic is that because it's soft, it's much easier for hairline scratches to "heal" over time as the surface gets rubbed on.
The aluminum back will definitely maintain the matte finish better than plastic because it is a harder material. Drawback is that since it's harder, it's also more brittle so it's more subject to chips/nicks and hairline scratches will stick around forever.
TL : DR Material properties are a *****. The matte finish (it's actually a bead blasted finish) will stick around for awhile as long as your hands/table/pockets aren't made of sandpaper or things harder than aluminum.
