noob question ;) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i appologise for such a noob question here so here goes
right so flashed the latest resurection 1.9.1 rom i think it is, rom seems pritty darn good so far but as the flashing procedure goes with the factory reset etc i have lost everything
its all backed up on kies so what my question is, with this custom rom flashed can i still sync with kies ? also if i can do is there anyway by syncing with kies with a custom rom that samsung or o2(my provider) or whoever can find out that i have a custom rom and void my warrenty / insurance ?
its probably the worst question asked so i do appologise again but in my mind its better to be safe than sorry thanks again guys

i dont believe any AOSP/AOKP ROMs supports Kies. Therefore, you cant use Kies with ICS Resurrection since it is AKOP based rom. You may want to look for a TouchWiz based custom rom if you want Kies support.
Good Luck

cheers for the reply !!

Help with upgrade to ICS

Im new to all this flashing and messing with mobiles and am a little lost so i need some help. I have a SGS2 running Checkrom V4 which im very happy with i have CWM installed and my rom backed up but i would like to upgrade to ICS. My issue is after doing loads of reading im not sure that its done through recovery and when you do have ICS on your device you don't have CWM so no easy way as far as i can tell to go back to gingerbread. I have odin on my PC that's setup and mobile Odin on the phone i just need someone to give some idiots instructions, what worrys me the most is no recovery. Is it worth waiting for a official ICS to come out that's stable with CWM or some other easy way to change roms, as i understand it some country is due it officially today.
Does someone have a idiot guide they can do for me of a decent stable Rom and how to install it and how the recovery works, i would really appreciate it, as all the threads have multiple parts that need flashing not just a simple rom there's add this and that. That doesn't worry me but i worry about becoming stuck on a ICS rom that's a load of ****, ideally i would like just a standard stock official UK rom that updates itself OTA or is stock with root and CWM but iknow we could be waiting a while for that.
thanks
Stickies...
Those are about the only thing i hdnt read.
cheers

Noob Questions Ahoy!

Hi there guys I really need educating. I come from a Samsung Galaxy S to a Samsung Galaxy S 3. I know all about firmware flashing, kernels n stuff on the original Sammy G, but haven't a clue on the Samsung Galaxy S 3.
I have managed to root the bad boy (go me!) but am unsure how to carrier unlock and to flash the latest firmware. The Sammy G was carrier unlocked but my Sammy G S3 is locked to Vodafone
Can anyone point me to the files and maybe some guides so that I can procede? Also what is this business about a flash counter? I want to be able to return to original firmware if it all goes belly up! How do I backup my original firmware?
Many Thanks In Advance
Doozy,
P.S.
Who is the best Dev to follow for A) Rom and B) Kernel? I followed CyanogenMod on the Sammy G but the CM9 nightlies fpr the Samsung Galaxy S 3 seem a little immature for me at the moment.
Cheers once again
I think you don't have to backup your original firmware because you can download the stock firmwares again later, but you can do a nandroid backup (i never did this^^)
If something goes wrong, follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
About unlocking i don't know, but i think the lock will be gone if you flash any rom (but can't give you warranty, since my phone was unlocked)
You can reset the flash counter, it's called triangle away : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
Im not able to say, whick rom / kernel is best, but why don't you check this thread and try some roms? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674286
The first CM9 releases had many bugs, but they seem to be ready for all day use now (but i missed the Sammy Camera App, which is very nice )
Thank You very much for taking the time to respond I will take a look at those links.
Thanks Very Much,
Doozy

[Q] Regarding Sudden Death

Well hereĀ“s what has been played out the latest couple of days...
I got myselfe a used S3 that was rooted and had Wanamlite ROM with the enclosed kernel flashed. I felt it was rather choppy and laggy so I flashed one of the prerooted ME7 found on XDA.
However that did not help a bit and on top of all the choppyness and the freezez I also got really poor batterylife.
So... I got some help in another thread to unroot and flashing the stock ROM with ODIN. After that the phone has been working as it should... no lagging and no freezes. Although I have the damned chip that causes the "Sudden Death" the factory reset seems to have done the job. But... WHY? Both WanamLite uses the stock kernel (right?) and the ME7 that I tried also uses the stock kernel... How is it that the "sudden Death-syndrom" disappeared after unrooting and reflashing stock?
Now to my question... a question that has been answered a thousand times before. Is it Worth to install a custom ROM with the new leaked firmware? I would really like it to be a custom version of the "official" ME7... prerooted and tweaked for best batterylife.
Any hints what to choose? Besides not getting root, perhaps the best choise would be to flash the unrooted "leaked" untouched ME7 with ODIN?
Any input would be nice!
>>>>>Custom 4.2.2 ME7 are stable enough for daily use .

>>>>What rom best rom posts are not allowed .
Suggest you stick with stock and read up .

Thanx for the answers.... but you missed the point!
Witch ROM is the best is not all that important... the question is rather if my experience of the "sudden death syndrom" will perhaps return if I flash other than stock ROM.
Also... the other question was IF I want the ME7 leak... is it better to stick to the stock untouched one or a custom one, regarding batterylife and smoothness.
For a start you didn't have sds or you wouldn't still be using your phone....poor setup/corrupt data most likely cause.
If you want advice on Roms go and read the relevant threads

No i did not miss the point .
One you need to read the basics and two ( one, regarding batterylife and smoothness.) is classed as what rom best rom .
The answer is its subjective and for you to decide on what rom .

[Q] complete noob but need answers xD

ok so i bought my international version galaxy s3 from ebay. it was already rooted and modified. i know cause i
cant receive updates. unless i use triangle away. obviously i still dont get updates because im on a custom rom which i have no idea what custom rom it is. rom manager doesnt tell me. rom manager says
that my custom rom isnt setup to recieve updates.
im on 4.1.2 JB. what im wanting to know is. can i flash straight to cyanogenmod 10.2 from my custom rom?
and will flashing to 10.2 keep me on 4.1.2 JB but with the cyan tweaks/mods or will it be 4.3?
also what is the best method to save my imei from any dramas. i also dont want to lose my network which ive seen people have this problem also.
is there anyway for me to find out what custom rom im using? i know that i have clockworkmod 6 installed.
im using 19300XXELLA on what i beleive is a custom kernel smp but cant be sure.
im sure this post has not made much sense but hope you can undersyand what km asking
i also looked at the sticky threads. they gave answers but i felt they werent the answers i needed specifically for me. except the imei question
First you can know your custom ROM most probably from about device info...
Second you can flash cm 10.2 or cm11 without any hassles with imei but if you want any Samsung based custom rom you should flash a newer modem... Search for them there are flashable zips available...
Before doing this, backup your efs by one of many apps on play store like ktool or samsung tool..
Cm10.2 means it is 4.3 android and cm11 will be 4.4.2..
And don't expect features of samsung firmware in those roms.. I mean better camera, swipe for screen shot and other features.. They are exclusive for samsung based roms...
For cm11 you must update your recovery to latest search for it flash then via Odin
Or cwm flashable zips are also available...
