I'm running in tablet mode and have, over time, gotten the dpi "right" for all of my apps except the Play Store, which still appears to be at a phone resolution (I'm guessing 360 dpi) .
I know the relationship between build.prop and hyb.prop.
I have tried:
Used default dpi of 213 without adding lines for Play Store.
I have added lines for Phonesky and com.android.vending-1 at 230 dpi
I'm pretty sure my Play Store has been updated (so no longer using orig vending.apk.
Wonder if:
I need to manipulate more than Phonesky and android vending?
Or
Need rom's original vending to change dpi?
It's kind of jarring to flip from low dpi (most of my apps besides phone and contacts) to my current market dpi.
Any help appreciated. Thanks
Love this rom!

Unfortunately the search option seems to be missing and Google isnt being too helpful.
I'm curious if first its possible to change the DPI on the i9300 and if so if there are any recommended settings.
Main reason I want to do this is I find everything is too small. I know this is due to the HD screen but playing angry birds and other stuff is hard on the eyes.
I figure changing the DPI will make it bigger and easier on the eyes
This is the first thread I read where someone wants to increase the dpi. Usually people want to lower it. Lol
If you are rooted try the app LCD density from the market. It allows you to play with the dpi and if you don't have it checked to stay after a reboot it will go back to stock dpi after a reboot. This is good for if you are trying different dpis.

Thanks the app works but multiple apps start crashing when I up any amount. I started at 400 (fro default 320) and went down to 330 and same thing
You could try the Paranoidandroid Rom in the development section. It's fabulous in it's versatility, specially on this device because of it's size. It allows you to independently set the dpi and ui framework for the entire device including a per app list. So for example you could have all system apps set to display in tablet mode and all user downloaded apps set to their default phone ui & dpi or any combination in between.
You can also set framework and system DPI (statusbar, toast messages, etc.) the DPI on the stock rom is way to big in my opinion and I have old eyes. Most of the native Google Apps have a tablet display and the render dual pane and great on the S3.
Give it a try, I've messed around with the 3rd party apps and it's a pain compared to using Paranoid. Zero dpi related issues and makes the phone more functional in my opinion with the option of utilizing more screen real estate with tablet UI and DPI tweaking to your liking.
Build prop in System
this file
ro.sf.lcd_density=320
Change the last figure .

Thanks ill give it a try
Is there a list somewhere with the DPI that works best for certain apps? I dropped PA many months ago when I moved to Padawan, but now I'm looking to tweak things again with the Jellybeer ROM. I know Gmail and YouTube and even Playstore really benefitted but can't remember which DPI? What other apps? Thanks.

I use 220 for everything.
I like 260. Throws most of my apps into tablet mode. And keeps my lock screen and widgets at a fair size.

I normally do anything from 190-220.

Thanks everyone. I've thrown most apps that show info in a list (email, gmail, facebook, etc.) into the 220 DPI group to squeeze way more onto the screen. I couldn't get dual-pane Gmail or YouTube until 213 DPI. Do I have to go even lower DPI on YouTube to get the "3D panel" tablet effect?
Is there a list somewhere of all apps that have different phone vs tablet UI's? I haven't had much "playtime" lately to toggle various DPI's on all my apps so I was wondering if someone had already done the dirty work. Thanks again.

You need to use this version of youtube:
http://www.4shared.com/android/eJD0zCCB/YouTube_4147.html
And set the dpi to 213 800x1280 and toggle tablet mode.

I came from a Galaxy Mega 6.3 and the playstore worked as would expected, in phone UI mode.
With the Z Ultra the icons are huge and there are only 4 huge app icons on the screen at a time. I'm guessing the extra resolution puts it in tablet mode. Without messing with the DPI is there any way to get the play store to go to the phone UI?
I'm happy with the DPI on the rest of the phone, just not the play store and it's not really worth it to me to install PA just to be able to change the DPI for one app...
I saw this post and tried it and it worked great! Play Store at 180 DPI now look excellent! (I used the App Settings module)
http://www.androidpit.com/xposed-framework-the-5-best-modules
yes, rooting without unlocking your bootlocker allows xposed framework to be installed, and the play store module should work to get you any app you like regardless of the dpi settings it reads
It's taken a little longer for the over-sized Play Store icons to REALLY bug me... glad I found your post.
180DPI is just a little too small for me, 240DPI (gives 3 columns) and font scaling to 120% is just about right for my eyes.
Thanks.
The only thing that's annoying when we change the Play Store DPI is when we get app updates, and it's not possible to read the changelog in portrait.

Sorry if this has been asked but I have looked and came up blank
I've changed the LCD dpi figure in my build.prop as my LG G2 looks a lot better at 380 than the stock 480.
However this seems to confuse the play store and some apps don't show up for me. I change the dpi back, reboot and hey presto I can see the app.
is there a way round this?
Any ideas ?
I changed the DPI on my 610 and at the time I had like 6 app updates available including facebook, Twitter, maps, gallery, etc. Once I rebooted with the new dpi, the app updates were gone. When I went back to the original dpi and rebooted the app updates were available again. Any ideas as to why? I'd like to keep my changed dpi because I think the original dpi (240) makes things way too big in that small screen.
