Battery drop, 91%-17% - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hie guys, I just woke today to see my phone was off and when I switched it on the battery was @17%, from the battery stats in settings it shows my phone switched off after 2hours of me sleeping. So what can really make a phone lose 74% battery whilst it's OFF??!!
Help me or you can paste me a link to where similar problems have been discussed.
Thanx.

Download a battery calibration tool off the market and use it, I have had this happen to me before where i would lose over 50% of battery life just by restarting my phone, and it would gradually go back up.
Also check if their are any updates for your rom and os you are running

Probably a pointless exercise since it's been proven you can't "calibrate" the battery in an S2.

I've had something similar happen, I was raping my battery with a torch app then restarted. Before the restart I had about 90%, after it was around 30%.
Could it be a sign of the battery failing? I've not had any real problems otherwise..

Perhaps you have wake locks? Purchase better battery stats or download it using the search button.
A high battery drain is often a limiting factor for a great user experience.
With BetterBatteryStats you can analyse the behavior of your phone, find applications causing the phone to drain battery while it is supposed to be asleep and measure the effect of corrective actions:
- Spot drainers based on detailed information about the root cause
- Use the online Knowledge-Base to find how to reduce or remove the wakelocks
- measure the effect of actions to reduce drain
- detect changes in the awake/sleep profile and quickly find the causes (rogue apps)

[Q] Do I need a new battery?

Hey guys,
I have been running unnamed rom lately, but on any other rom including stock. My battery lasts for like 8 hours with little use and 4 hours with moderate use. When I see what is draining my battery it looks normal as the display uses the most, but I only have it at 30% brightness most of the time I have insurance should I see if I can get a new battery? Or any other tips?
Can you post a pic of your battery usage?
Have you tried to calibrate the battery yet?

Many things could cause battery drainage, such as oc-ing. You could find the original Samsung battery on eBay for a cheap price. Before buying one, try doing the following:
Clear OC/UV settings (i.e. put to defaults)
Download Battery Calibration by NeMa (on the Play Market)
Charge your phone and wait until it reaches 100%*
Tap on "Battery Calibration" and done
Once calibrated, use your phone as you normally would until the battery dies. Only when it dies you can charge it. You can charge as you please from then on.
Note: If it does not reach up to 100%, go to CWM and clear battery stats.

Which other firmwares? Anything UCKK6-based has known documented wifi drain issues.
The usual applies - look in battery statistics, use BetterBatteryStats to hunt wakelocks.

THIS DOES NOTHING ON ANY SAMSUNG GALAXY S DEVICE!
never tried the battery calibration?... does it actually work or no?
have you installed any new apps recently? those apps that use a lot of apps in the background are a pest to your battery life as they usually won't show up in the battery monitor. try disabling your data when not in use and see if that helps. if the current rom you are on does not have a toggle bar with data use the "data enabler widget" by Farproc.

Battery drain issue.

Hi guys,
Is anyone having battery drain issues with their new sgs3's?
With my one it wouldn't last 12 hours without dying. Also if its at 100% it'll drop to 70% overnight while i sleep (6-7 hours) and thats with power saver on, sync off and running juicedefender.
Today I factory reset the phone and only installed flash, whatsapp and dolphin browser. Have wifi on, sync, data, gps and bluetooth off. Havent got pictures of battery stats yet since I only reset it half an hour ago.
So is anyone else experiencing battery drain? if so have you fixed it? and how?
Are there any apps I should be aware of that drain the battery?
I would remove juice defender.
Uninstall lightflow app if you are using it.
Use betterbstterystats to identify any wakelocks. The xda thread of the same name will be able to help with solutions.
Other than that follow general tips on increasing battery life that are found all over xda.
This device is easily capable of much better battery life than you are getting.
Good luck.

No issues at all so far, in my case. In fact this is the first Android phone I've owned that has no battery-related issues
Based on my previous experience what you can try doing is (a) install CPU Spy to see if your phone is entering 'deep sleep' appropriately (b) install BetterBatteryStats to identify offending applications.
Even the 'Battery' section in settings is useful -- just check if any apps are keeping the phone awake for longer than you've actually used them ('Stay Awake' number).
ok well ive installed bad ass battery monitor since its free. Also since I did factory restore i charged it to full and in 1 hour 44 mins it used 7% on idle. Going to charge it to full again and use it normally to see how it is.
Only apps ive installed is XDA, badd ass battery, dolphin browser and whatsapp.
maybe you have samsung widgets etc set to refresh every hour or shorter. Or could be Whatapp

Not too happy with my battery either. Fully charged over night and its down to 89% 1hr 30 later. Is that normal? However, you did mention lightflow earlier though which I have installed - Is that a massive battery drain? My battery stats seem to show display as being the big culprit but I have brightness set to it lowest setting.
Also, can't seem to find battery monitor pro on play?

I'm on Omega V4.0 and with wifi always on, fully charged 3 hours back and when i woke up it's 95% remaining. So about 1.66% loss per hour in sleep mode. With regular usage and installing and testing different roms and backing up etc them i easily get about 8~10 hours. Phone's made in Korea and battery mfg date is 2012.5.6.
Plus tons of widgets on home screens.

"Android System" massive battery drain

finally found a thread on this issue after posting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748301
sorry mods, pls delete
Me too ... it's driving me nuts.
I am experiencing this. My battery life is horrendous. Even when I barely touch the phone the battery drains extremely quickly. I have already rooted the phone with a few different roms with the battery setting "fix" to no avail. I'm on at&t. I have disabled wifi and gps. I have tried to use both the stock app killers and 3rd party ones recommended by these forums. My battery monitoring apps (both stock and 3rd party) consistently attribute the battery loss (always more than 90% of battery use) to an android system app. The android system app or file changes from day to day seemingly randomly. Files have included: UltaCfg, com.samsung.app.playreadyui and security storage.
Any help will be extremely* appreciated. I love the phone but it is nearly useless in this state.

I have been experiencing some serious battery drain issues. Looking at my battery stats, "Android System" is responsible for over half of the drainage. These are the only apps that run constantly besides those which the phone requires to operate:
- SetCPU
- HDWidges
- The Weather Channel
- LBE Privacy Guard
- avast! Mobile Security
other phone info is in sig. Any insight/advice??

I am draining my battery as quickly as I can (streaming Netflix through 4G LTE with max screen brightness, max overlclock w/ performance gov) and then i'm going to power off and do a full recharge. this seemed to have fixed similar issues in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756776
let you know the results.
edit: suppose i should say that i was not experiencing this issue until i updated KT747 this morning.
this is what i did:
1) drain the battery completely. let the phone die.
2) charge to 100%. do not power the phone on until it is completely charged to 100%.
3) when i powered the phone on I was at 99%. i plugged it in and it went to 100% in about 2 minutes.
this seems to have completely solved my problem. the android system has gone from using 57% of the battery to 6%. it seems like the kernel i was using vastly overestimates the percentage of the battery to allocate to the android system until it "learns" the capacity of the battery

I am also a Telus user. I had big time battery drain issues even with trying everything: enabling power savings mode, running Juice Defender, using wifi more, using darker wallpaper, keeping a closer eye on syncing operations, screen brightness and some other stuff.
After about 10 days I went back to the vendor (Futureshop) and convinced them to give me an exchange on the battery. They have a 14 day return/exchange policy for cell phones if you are not completely satisfied. I took some screenshots to argue my case. Thankfully the rep said ok and further explained how much power an AMOLED screen uses. I really didn't want to convince him that I am quite informed on battery drain issus and took the new battery and ran!
Conclusion is the new battery is so much better it's like night and day. I have the capacity now that others have been raving about.
If you can exchange the battery, do it. Then get the new battery and charge it up fully first thing.

Go to my Battery Guide stickied in the Q&A section and see if any of those tips apply. In the 3rd post, there are apps that will help determine what is draining your battery.
Download Betterbatterystats from the 3rd post and run it. Post a screen shot of Partial Wakelocks/Since Unplugged and we'll see what is draining your battery and move on from there.

now i did take a pic of the screen and i will do the battery calibration app, but after the instillation of the ROM i did go to the CWR and did wipe battery status but it did noting.

Can you give a screen shot like the above but with a little more time on it than 4 minutes? Maybe with a few hours on it. That way we can see a little more info. All that is on that screenshot is the modem initializing and your media scanner.
Also when you wiped Battstat in CWR, that was the same thing as the Battery Calibration app is doing. Just the app is easier in that you don't have to boot into recovery to wipe them.
Do the battery calibration when your phone is charged to 100%. A buddy of mine was having awful battery life, turned out he wiped his battery stats when it was only half charged and then it seemed to charge only half way.
Charged it to 100%, then calibrated and viola.

Perfect. You must have either your GPS or Network Location on all the time. That is what is killing your battery. Do you use Maps/ Navagation a lot? How about apps that track your location like Foursquare/Twitter/G+ or FB (even apps like Angry Birds do this crap). Find the app that is broadcasting and you'll find the leak.
I have the MLB At-Bat app on both my phone and my tablet and on my tablet, I allow it to use my location so I can watch the games. It is a wifi only tablet and I have the wifi policy to cut off when tablet is in stand-by mode. On my phone however, I manually turn it on/off when I want to watch a game, so it never interferes with deepsleep and not broadcasting my location using GPS and battery at the same time. See where I am going with this?
I am betting that you don't get into deepsleep much because of the wakelocks interupting the sequence. Install CPUspy and let it runs for a few hours. After a bit, open it up and I would venture to say that your DS will be minimal.
Let's solve your battery drain first and then we can put on our tin-foil-hats and I'll show you some apps that are tracking you.

i uninstalled a lot of apps after what you wroth me but still no change

Now that is frickin' comedy! On a serious note though, it does get frustrating chasing these things around. After I flash and get everything setup I make a nandroid.. Then when it happens I skip all the trying to find the culprit business and reflash and restore from scratch. I would rather have the hassle than be annoyed lol.

[Q] Battery Draining No Matter What I Shut Off... Why?

Hello,
I wanted to get your guys opinion as I believe my phone may have turned defective and I really don't want to go down the Warranty Route as I'll loose the phone for weeks. And willing to try anything suggested.
So here's the problem:
Battery Draining at very high rates. On stock battery, I am draining about 12% an hour, after 6 or so hours my 15% battery capacity left warning turns on. I figured it was the battery, so bought a double capacity 4200mAh Hyperion Battery. Now my battery drain is at 6% an hour (which is equivalent to the factory battery considering the double capacity).
I am currently on XXELKC 4.1.2 Stock ROM. When I first noticed the problem, I was on 4.1.1. Figured I would ODIN, Wipe all cache's, and start clean. This has made no affect on battery life.
Here's what I've tried:
- 4.1.1, 4.1.2 Stock ROMs from Wipe - High Drain
- Airplane Mode with Location Services Disabled - High Drain, but 4.5% an Hour instead of 6% an Hour.
- Disabled all Samsung Apps - seemed to have little impact
- Disabling Google Now has made zero impact on battery life.
- 4.1.1 BBS revealed nothing - may need to try again on 4.1.2
Any ideas? Or is this sounding like the phone? Is it possible after a wipe the phone, when I re-enter my Google Credentials it is restoring some data which is defunct and causing high drain?
Note: Screen shots are with the double capacity battery taken right after a clean Odin upgrade to 4.1.2. Only ran Android Activation and thats it.
It looks like your phone isnt going to sleep properly. Try a custom rom/kernel.
Have you done a full whipe ?? If not, do so, and don't forget to make a back up first. It worked for me !

I had similar issues, I factory reset worked, and I also download rescan media root app to disable the media scanner which was my main battery killer.
WHen you do the factory reset make sure your phone is connected to the internet, so it will prompt google to store the apps you have and remote install when you sign back into the phone.
I have performed a full wipe but that had minor impact on battery life but I wounder if the Google Restore possibly restored an invalid setting. I will try this again without entering my credentials and see if there is a link with a restored setting. I will have to give the rescan media app a try as well.

Any specific kernel in mind. From what I've been reading no kernel seemed to stand up to magically solve battery issues without voltage drop or cutting services like Google now from the rom.

I have attached a run with BBS for 1 hour. Nothing is really standing out. The phone was in deep sleep for all but 2 minutes. I did have Google Now and Location Services Disabled as that was eating away an impressive 10 minutes / hour from deep sleep. But my battery life only increased from 6% an hour to 4.5% an hour. An improvement but weak IMO considering the larger battery.

I once had that kinda issue too
What I did was Factory Reset and that did the trick for me
How about trying the app CPU sleeper?

I've had this issue before on the i9100 Galaxy S II, where it didn't seem to matter what I did, it chewed battery just as soon as I put my Google account back onto the handset. I believed it was caused by the Samsung calendar bug. So absolutely; try it without putting your Google account onto the device.
Also, your WiFi signal looks low, although this has less of a difference compared to having low mobile coverage...

Factory Wipe again from Settings Menu
Went back to factory Samsung battery for consistency in reports to other users
Took out both my sim and sdcard to eliminate those possibilities
Put into airplane mode
Disabled a bunch of apps (ss on next post)
Still bismal results but better than before. 7 percent an hour drain. Attached all the files. Ideas? Google says phone is awake but bbs doesn't seem to shed any clues for me...
And here are the disabled and installed apps
your phone isnt going to sleep at all....something is keeping it awake..try a stock rom ( any will do) with full wipe. Dont restore anything with titanium backup. Disable auto sync on everything. Set wifi sleep policy to always. See if the problem persists.

That last run posted was stock 4.1.2 XXELKC firmware and Factory Wipe from Settings Menu. I also performed Wipe and Cache Wipe in the Bootloader (Power Up + Center + Power). All I did was install bbs and never put in Google or Samsung credentials and disabled some stock apps from running.
If your not referring to factory Wipe, can you please explain further? Thanks.
