I have this one problem that happens intermittently:
Sometimes, upon turning the screen on, the face unlock turns on, but the camera doesn't, so all that's shown is a black screen.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I tried out the face unlock for a day and yes this happened to me a lot. When it worked it is pretty handy but I would say 1 out 3 times ff camera did not turn on.

It happened to me once so far. Ive been using it(and just playing with it) for two days now.
Happened to me quite a few already but only when I was in low light situations. Other than that, when I'm outside or during the day indoors, it works perfectly!

This happens to me outdoors, in good light, as well.
I hope HTC rolls out a fix soon.
No problems here worked eveytime since pre-order launch day

I think once out of the 30+ times I've used it so far (I have mine set to stay unlocked for 5 minutes) the camera didn't come on in time for the face unlock timeout.
It's still happening to me, maybe about 10-15% of the time.
Me too- I'd say 10 - 15% is about right. It works enough that I've left it on though.

In low light it's different- it actually specifies that lighting is the problem; I can't remember the actual wording. Like I said, it still works enough for me to keep using it.
-still like most of us geeks, it will bother me until I fix it.
it happened to me when i was custom rom
No Issues here.....has always turned on....
I wonder though.....for those having the issue......(and don't flame for this question) but did you make sure you were not covering the front camera? its in the upper right side of the screen and I could see possibly covering the cam with a stray finger......
just a thought to check.....though unlikely.

I hear ya- I'm an I.T. tech, and people go nuts when I say "are you sure it's turned on?" -but for the record, the camera is not blocked when it happens.

I was very excited by the Smart Stay feature of SGSIII but after a few days, experience, my opinion is that it does not work. I set the timeout to 15 sec. The eye flashes in the notification bar but most of the time screen is turned off. I tried staring directly at the front camera. Tried various positions too but no result. And all this is done in a normal lit room. Then I tried removing my specs and then it seems to work. Since I can't do much without them, so no fixed observation. Can anybody help?

Any particular setting? Or particular angle at which you keep your phone? Mine for sure does not work. The eye flashes but then the screen is also turned off.
I have the same issue too. Does anyone know the issue and how to overcome it? Thanks
I get mixed results with it. It works under ideal conditions but I had to extend the dim period to use it in everyday use.
The icon appears to show that the phone is checking for a face and not confirming it saw one. I see it flash even when looking from an angle where I'm definitely out of the camera frame.

Me and a friend we bought s3 and both of us having an issue with smart stay !It works after you open the device for the 15-30 minutes and after that nothing, after the eye appears the screen goes off!We are not wearing glasses!!So any idea what cause that?A possible bug of it?Or any future update will fix it?
you guys running on XXfl2 or whatever it is?
smart stay works really well for me, never has an issue, even at acute angles
It never works for me.
Then again... I'm way to ugly for my phone to stay with me.
Smartphone's R getting to smart I guess.
Works great for me too...
Samsung already stated they are working on improving the feature as it is not yet capable of handling some light conditions, and most glasses.

Works fine for me with glasses, as long as the phone's front camera is pointing right at me.
The flashing eye means its searching for a face; the only indication that it has recognised you is that the screen doesn't turn off.
Same issue!
Yup, facing the same problem. Keep staring at the screen for hours for the damn thing to work. But it just wont. I have tried with my glasses off. Got the same result. The eye appears on the screen twice. The first time it dims the screen, the second time it shuts it off. I have tried different angles, but have finally resigned to my fate, unless XDA/Sammy figure it out!
not working for me 2
I am not wearing any glasses but it simply dont wok tried to change the angels but no luck ... hope it need improvement. This was the main reason to purchase the s3 but....
Mine works quite well, feels like its abit of a battery drain though.

It needs to be a nice distance from your face to pick up your eyes, light is an issue too.

Samsung patented this feature so i guess the app dev is in a bit of danger unless he is not really rich.
Other apps wont be as good either, as smart stay was made with this hardware in mind (namely the camera). Others will have to bend and shape to fit multiple cameras, making detection algorithms not as strong.

I just got my first gs3 5 days ago. Love it, but yesterday i noticed a dot on the screen in the lower left quadrant. I could only see it when the screen was off and under direct light. I tried cleaning it, but it was still there, i could also feel a little abrasion when i ran my finger over it. So i take it back to best buy, tell them what's up and they swap it out, no problem. The guy said it could have been either an air bubble in the screen, or the chip could have over heated causing a "blister" to raise up. "Weird cause I've only had it for a few days, and haven't even rooted it yet" So i get it, had to go to work right after so i didn't have much time to play with it. I wake up this morning and i notice that when the screen is on a black background, like the messaging app, or something similar, i can see a "darker" dot in around the same place where i had the problem on my last one, i can also see several other smaller ones around the screen. The dots are easy more noticeable when i turn the brightness up. This is the 16 gig Sprint model, is anyone else having similar issues with their phones? I'm going to go back up there tomorrow to try and swap it out again, hopefully they don't give me and flak about it.

Not every screen has this. However over time every screen will have the problem. As far as I can tell I have none. Plus the other model that I had also didn't have any dots that I could see. I know it could have also been minimal. but it is a known issue with these screens has the other poster stated. Worth returning over? I don't think so.
I could understand having this problem a year down the road, but 1 day after first turning on the phone! That sounds a little much. I think I'll try returning it one more time...maybe 3rd times a charm?

That's AMOLED for ya. If you only see one dot...you're lucky. Hope you don't get one with 5 or more.
The dots/bleed marks should NOT be more visible when you turn the brightness up, they should be less visible at higher brightness.
Take it back, get another one. Keep doing it until you're satisfied.

Also I have an ATT model. I checked a friends and I didn't see any one his as well. He also had ATT. Not that it matters much just saying.
Also you can use this app...CHange your brightness up as far as you would like to help check for the dots/ink...

Great small app. Also helps to see if you have any dead pixels!
hope this helps you out...

Thanks for the app recommendation. Tried it and didn't see any dead pixels or dots on any of the screens. In fact, i can't see the dots that i did before! I don't know if it's because it's brighter out versus when i was looking last night? I guess I'll keep an eye on it for the next few days and see if it gets worse. Would this problem get worse over time or is this just something that is there and will always be there? Thanks.

I would have kept the first one, if you're critical enough you can find some kind of a defect in any phone.

From what I understand it can get worse as time goes on. same with any burn ins and so on. Again this is what I understand. By the this time next year I will be replacing this device anyways in most cases unless nothing good comes out.
i wouldn't worry about it if its gone. Could it have been some type of bleed effect or something? I don't know. I'd just watch it for now. Check it so often. If you end up not minding it (If there even if an issue..) then i would keep the device. At higher brightness settings is when you can see it from my understanding. Again I could be 100% wrong. Wouldn't be the first time!
Cheers...

So when I'm on the phone, my screen will black out.. give you a good example: was talking to my wife this morning about an accident.. You don't have your thumb over the sensor do u? Mine is pretty sensitive as well. If my hand even gets close to the side of the sensor my screen goes black.
This issue has been discussed in the forums before but I can't find the link I was looking for. Apparently this issue w/the proximity sensor was on some, not all, early model HTC EVO 4g LTE's and required you to send bak to manufacture for fix. I have the same issue n this works for me 'most of the time'... Just take your phone away from your ear, in upper lefthand corner wipe screen a few times with thumb/finger. I'm not guaranteeing it will work for you. Like I said, works for me.

What I found out is that the timing of the two knocks is less important, what is more important is to keep the finger on the screen after the second knock. After the second knock just keep it on the screen until you see the LED lights up, and you'll see how more efficient it will become.

I noticed most of the time when Knock On fails for me is because the phone isn't on a solid flat surface for example while I'm holding it in my hand or while it's on my bed.
This makes me think the accelermeter is used for this feature. So if you have too much "suspension", it won't trigger.
Just my thoughts!
Edit: I just tested with incredibly light touches and it still worked so perhaps it isn't accelerometer enabled. =S

Great tip
Exactly what i was looking for although still a bit slow compared with what i had with my Nexus 4 and the touch control app. But at least I just do Knock knock once.
That really does work everytime.
Nice tip. I have been playing around with suggestions that I have seen elsewhere but yours seems to be the most consistent (I've done it 25+ times now in a row with your technique). I've even tried changing the rate at which I do the knocks (fast versus slow) and have also tapped on different parts of the screen. It seems like the key is leaving your finger on the screen on the second knock.
Previously some things that I read to increase the success rate were (each with mixed results):
- Always tap on the top of the phone (where the notification bar would be)
- Always tap three times instead of two
- Tap once and then pause slightly and then tap twice
On a side note, does anyone know how this feature works exactly? Is it simply the digitizer detecting the taps on the screen or is there something else going on?
I tried tapping on the back of the phone. This didn't work so the at least use the touchscreen for the knock knock feature.

Ya, after doing some more testing, it must be the touchscreen. The reason I thought it may have been something else is I have gotten it to work by tapping in the top right corner of the phone (presumably not on the screen) but that's probably b/c the bezel is so small. I haven't been able to get it to work along the bottom of the phone (over the LG logo).

I hate it bc that's how I was when the first iPhone came out...made me want to pinch to zoom my laptop screen. Now I find myself tapping the iphone or laptop to unlock but get mad when they don't lol
Knock On feature to turn screen on doesn't work if proximity sensor is covered (try to cover it and tap the screen - it will stay off). Also phone needs a short while to detect the sensor is not covered anymore. So if you pull out your phone out of a pocket and immediately try to turn screen on it simply won't work at first try. Second usually does the job. I've never really had a problem with unlocking the phone while it's on the table or something, when the sensor isn't (or wasn't two seconds ago) covered by anything.
So the reason of our problem is slow response from proximity sensor, it's super fast to detect the sensor is covered, but a lot slower to detect it's uncovered. (You can test it during the phone call - you'll see what I mean).
The solution is just wait a second after you pull out your phone from pocket or after you holding it the way it covers or is near the proximity sensor. I don't think guys triple knocking or keeping your finger on the screen is really helpful. ?
Maybe it can be fixed somehow by our devs, make the proximity sensor reacts quicker.

Probably does that so it won't come on by "knocking" in your pocket. Not a big deal for me at all. And the OP's method is working 100% of the time fur me. No need for 3 knocks any more.
I'd like to confirm what don't others have said and say that the most common mistake is tapping too fast.
Correct that the knock on only uses the sensor to avoid turning the screen on in your pocket.
However, if the touch screen constantly listens for these knocks while it is turned off, shouldn't that consume at least a considerable amount of battery?

sorry for this really really dumbass question but when u say "After the second knock just keep it on the screen until you see the LED lights up"
i infer 1 knock (tap and lift finger) and then 2nd one is not actually a knock (tap and lift finger) but just tap and keep ur finger there itself
or
is it 2 knocks and then (after second lift of finger) jst touch the screen again
good i really feel like dumbest dumb on this planet asking this question but please do reply

Just got the Verizon V30 and I do have AOD on. When I put the phone to sleep with power or knock off I have trouble waking it up. It appears the screen goes off totally when I flip it over or put it in my pocket. Whe I pull it out of the pocket it will not wake up with power button or knock on taps for a good 20 seconds or more.
I cannot find a setting to stop the screen for totally going off when I pocket the phone. I can confirm that I do NOT have the smart lock feature enabled. I’m just using a PIN code unlock, no facial or voice recognition. I really like the phone but I can’t have this happening every time I take it out of my pocket or turn it over on the couch.
Any ideas?

Do you have any screen protector on the phone? Any battery saver apps or settings? In my experience the AOD is suppose to go off when turned over or put in a pocket. I haven't seen a way to change that. Mine might take a couple seconds to awaken, but never 20 seconds.

I have my since December from last year and only now it started to behave like that.. I don't know if it is a software issue or hardware issue of some kind. I've tested the sensors and they appear to be fine.. I will try to do a backup of my data and perform a hard reset to see if it helps, but I'm not counting on it...
I don't use AOD. Just try it to reproduce the problem. Maybe my V30 get the same problems after long term use of it.
The only problem i get random with screen is, that after a restart the colors get crazy there are not normal after enabling Comfort View all get back normally but it is a other story.

I did some tests (issue of being a former Senior QA Engineer). I've tried disabling the AOD and the same thing happened. What I just did is disabling the Knock-On feature.
I need to test it more thoroughly but the issue didn't happen after that.. YET. I need to go somewhere, with the phone in my pockets for a longer period (even though by now I should've seen the issue again) just to be sure and even trying to enable the Knock-On back again.. But let's see..
As for the colors, I really can't say much because I've never used the comfort view feature (I usually just dim down the brightness at night and that's all).
Yeah test it i will it do too. I enabling the AOD and say you next day when i get some problems.
I testing AOD since yesterday and dont get any problem until now.

With mine the AOD worked well since day one. I did some things that seemed to have fixed somehow...
I've removed the device from the case I was using (a simple thin one). gave it a good cleaning, forced the power button for a while because I was feeling it was getting stucked. It seemed to keep showing issues HOWEVER, after I disabled the Knock-On feature, left it off for a while it stopped to have issues. I enabled it again and now it is working perfectly... I don't know if it was a coincidence or a sum of all factors.. but now it seems to be working...

Hello, I had the same problem, the proximity sensor fails, although the tests say otherwise, download an application from play store, fix sensor, solved!

I still need to try the Comfor Color to see if it happens here. Is only that I always forget to try.
