I dropped my phone today....
The feeling of fear and helplessness as it slipped out of my hands and fell towards the concrete below was just dreadful...
The damage not as bad as some of the other guys that have also dropped theirs, just scratch and bent the aluminum by the Mic hole on the bottom...
Just wanted to see if anyone else had any horror stories that will make me feel better about myself

I haven't dropped my Evo LTE yet, well, because my preorder is in lala land.
But a month ago. I was canoeing at a lake, taking pictures with my OG Evo. I put the sucker in my lap! My fuggin lap! on a boat! Then while I got close to the dock, I stood up and all of sudden the world around me turned into the Matrix. The phone in slow motion went from my lap to about a three inch gap between the dock and boat. Helpless. Ofcourse it couldn't go into the boat or hit the dock. And it sunk like a dead hookers body.
Now I've had no (real) phone for a month, while I wait for my stupid preorder. Does that make you feel any better?

Ouch and to think I am sitting here frustrated until I get a new one since Google Wallet crapped out and I won't even use it that much. Guess I can't get too upset.
I dropped mine while I was doing a exchange at Best Buy for a dead pixel. I was inspecting it for flaws and it slipped out my hand Lucky I was sitting down and it landed on desk-counter and nothing happen to it
Not a drop so much as it flew out of my shirt pocket, skidded across a bar floor and smacked into a wall. Picked it up and not a single scratch at all. I was beyond shocked.
My OG EVO went off a 2nd story deck.... Luckily I had siedio case (seidioonline.com/htc-evo-4g-convert-extended-value-pack-black-p/bd5-hkr5hev4x.htm) and zagg screen protector.... No damage..... Still crazy though

So which is worse?
1) Dropping your brand new EVO LTE.....or
2) Preordering your EVO LTE not knowing when you'll recieve it.
Better to have loved and dropped than never to have loved at all?

I couldn't tell you. I got mine last week. Once its in your hands its all better. Sorry.
I dropped mine yesterday while getting out of the car. Thank God i put on that ugly case they sent. i nearly **** my pants. but with the silicone case it nothing appears to have happened to it. i miss having a lanyard. But this case will do for now.
WHY DID THEY STOP PUTTING LANYARD HOLES ON PHONES!!!?!?!?!?!
i dont care if most people in the states dont use them, i always did!!! everyone in asia still uses them!!!!!
during pre-order, sites had HTC LANYARDS in their accessory sections, i was so excited, but after i got the phone, NO LANYARD HOLES. JUST A BIG TEASE
Dropped mine when it was in the blue gel HTC case onto brick. No damage.

I just dropped my phone outta 3 story window (Galaxy S II) basically the same height as my neighbors roof... I was playing on it while smoking a cigarette and it slipped out of my hand... I ran down the stairs FAST! and when I got outside it was still in tact I checked I have no marks at all just a few scuff marks that wiped right off it landed on the screen too! I have a d30 duo shock case, (which now I will. Have on every phone I buy!) and a zag screen protector! I'm amazed and soo happy

You people are clumsy. I haven't dropped mine yet and won't.
Ok I have over no joke over 40 different phones over a ten year span. I use to work at a retail store that sells sprint and since the HTC touch I been a Htc fan. Only once have I dropped my phone into a bucket of mop water that was freaky. I also buy good cases and have insurance. It's the be safe then sorry feeling. Ever since the windows PDA that I recall buying for 500 bucks have I did the insurance. Since then these phones are fragile.

Dropped mine yesterday.
I got out of the car and it slipped out of my hands onto the parking lot asphalt.
Just two small notches in the metal lining on the very left bottom corner of the phone is all the damage it took.
A friend said they bet my heart jumped. I said, "Nah, Its just a phone."
I'm lucky that there were no scratches on the back casings or glass.
I've had cell phones for a long time, and I stopped dropping them when I got my i860 Nextel. I've always had phones that are delicate, and I'm careful about my electronics. Unless they're marketed as such, THEY'RE NOT SHOCK RESISTANT, and they will break.
My philosophy, if you're a klutz in your day-to-day life, you should have a case.
I have an otterbox case and i hate it. So big and bulky. but it works until i find something slimmer.
It's not always about being clumsy, sometimes sh!t just happens. I live in NYC and at any moment someone can walk or run into my hand while im walking down the street and send my phone flying. Let us also not even bring up a crowded bar with drunken people who like to zig zag unpredictably.
Truth is, if my insurance was still $100 then i wouldnt even bother, but at a $200 deductible i feel forced to rock a case.

Man, my friggin digitizer crack one day, literally like a sheet of thin ice even with a case on. Now, the new one has a tiny scratch and I haven't done anything to it. I have never had such a fragile digitizer on any phone before. Only thing that really bothers me coming from HTC MyTouch 4g where I was in a bar fight and my phone was dragged across the floor and only had scratches, never cracked when it should have been destroyed, lol. Anybody else thing the digitizer is crappy?
Don't get me wrong either, I am careful with my phone, i just can't believe how badly it shattered on a short drop. Annoying as hell!!

Funny you say that. All touchscreen phones are like this. Thin glass. And being that motorola generally makes quality hardware and the plastic on the atrix absorbing impact better than metal phones, methinks you need to take better care of your phone. I see a lot phones during the work week and it seems ive seen a lot of cracked iphones lately. Im not fond of apple but i concede that their phones are high quality. Cant fault a phone or its manufacturer for dropping your phone. You sound silly when you make the mistake but shift the blame.
I voided my warranty.
My first Atrix was tossed out of the car at onto asphalt. I didn't have a case or screen protector on it and after picking up the cover and the battery, everything was fine. A couple scratches and bumps in the plastic but everything worked fine.
The screen finally broke on a fast ball pitch straight down to the floor.

The only time I dropped a phone was around 2 summers ago, it was an HTC Aria, screen got shattered, it had no cover and went face down on tarmac. It was the first time and the last one. I never use a cover on my phones, I do have them for when ever my daughter wants to use it. but the majority of the time is just naked.
Got mine on release day. I always roll "naked" with my phones. I hardly ever drop my phones. But this one is so damn light I keep forgetting it's in my lap when I jump out the car so I got some bezel dings. No biggie to me

It was a nasty rainy day when he picked it up. On the way back to work, he received a call (he had had the phone maybe 10 minutes).
He answered the call & layed the phone in his lap. When he pulled into work, he totally forgot the phone was in his lap & got out. The phone fell into a large puddle & he stepped on it smashing the screen all in one motion.

Don't your cars have cup-holders? I keep my phone there at all times.
What I have a bad habit of doing, is at night when I'm chillin on the couch I'll have my phone sitting on my lap on top of the blanket that is covering me. Then when get up to go to bed I'll forget about it and yank the blanket off. Usually the phone just falls on to the carpet, no big deal. On my old Incredible, I did this and it flew up in the air and flipped a bunch of times and landed flat on it's back on my padded ottoman/coffee table. My CM7 lockscreen came on when it landed. My wife looked at me and said "That was pretty good, now do it again". Lol
first day i had my rezound, i dropped it off the counter at my store..so like a 4 foot drop lol..landed on hardwood floor..but was fine. i was so mad at myself i just screamed the F bomb as it fell hahaha

This exact same story happened to me before too! You just need to replace the word "phone" with "pipe", and then replace "received a call" with "smoked bowl". =P

this thread has inspired me to get a case. my inc2 was cheap enough to just buy another in the off chance that something terrible happened, but not this puppy. besides, it's already massive. what's another couple millimeters on each side, right?

I strongly recommend the OtterBox case for whatever phone you have. I have one for this, my fascinate, the droid 2 i gave my mother-in-law. Besides the extended battery for long trips and when I wanna use the **** outta my phone, the defender was the best thing I got for it. Two days after I got the case I dropped my phone on concrete and kicked it while at work and watched it bounce across the room, woulda been dead without the case.
If it falls out of my truck, it's easily a 4' drop. I'm careful with my phones, never had a major drop with my Incredible, but Otterbox Commuter arriving tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

I was hiking this weekend and slipped on a loose rock and fell. My EVO 4G LTE was in my front pocket and I landed face down. I got up and pulled the phone out to see no visible damage. A little while later I wanted to snap picture of this tiny salamander and found my phone to be non-functional. There are white lines going up and down the screen and it appears to be stuck in a boot loop.
I just started to get some real love out of this phone thanks to CM10 and I have a tough choice to make if I can't pull out some miracle fix. Do I switch to AT&T and ditch Sprint's crappy service? Do I get a GSIII or wait for something better?
I would really like a Nexus phone but I don't know when the next one is to be released.
EDIT: It seems I was incorrect about there being no damage. I just discovered a small dent on the back of the phone just above the speaker hole.
this is why you need a case homie

I actually had my phone fall out of my pocket while on a carnival ride over 30 yards in the air. I was able to use a friends phone to log into my Cerberus account and track it. I could see a satellite view of the park and the tent next to the ride to be sure I lost it there, and not somewhere else. I went around to the back of the ride where the red dot indicated and saw my phone face down. I was sure the glass would be destroyed. To my surprise it was perfect, not a single scratch. The phone also operated 100%. There was a considerable chunk taken out of the right corner aluminum frame and a few smaller nicks further down on the aluminum. There was a bunch of paint on the top left corner (also aluminum) from the machine.
I think that's a testament to the aluminum body of the EVO LTE and to the gorilla glass. co-worker with EVO 4G dropped his from 2 feet off the ground. the corner hit the ground and the glass spidered out.
anyway, sorry to hear your phone is jacked now. Take it back to the store and see about replacement. Maybe you had the insurance?

I do not have insurance as this phone is through work. They are trying to switch us to AT&T anyway and I'm one the last holdouts on Sprint because I really wanted the new EVO. I love the hardware of this phone but I can't justify getting another and being handicapped to low-grade DSL speeds when I don't have access to WiFi. It's no secret that 3G has sucked balls the last year or so and I don't see LTE coming to North Jersey (my area) any time soon.

To the OP, sorry to hear about the phone. Sucks when they go down hard like that, with all the work that goes into getting them dialed in.
We have an S3 and an EvoLTE in the family right now. Wife had to have Sprint do a hard reset on her S3 on it yesterday to see if it would fix some odd issues it's having. She's still inside the first 14 days and is thinking hard about swapping it to an EvoLTE. Her mom has the EvoLTE as well, and it's also been issue free, like mine has been. I'm not really impressed with the S3, FWIW.

If the job is providing phones then by all means, go for it. If it were coming out of your pocket then I'd say hold out, North Jersey is getting LTE this year:

However you've got to get onboard with a "Just in case" case, preferably Otterbox. I don't use my Otterbox, unless I'm traveling or in a location with a lot of Marble.

The glass wasn't an issue because the phone was in my pocket with the screen facing my leg. The aluminum body hit a rock when I fell and that's how it got dented. If anything, this is a good argument against the aluminum body construction. If it was plastic, it would have just bent a little or maybe cracked. The relatively soft aluminum bent and either shorted the motherboard or cracked it. In time I may find a torx screwdriver small enough to open it up and find out. In the meantime, I'm up and running on my OG Evo. It's really tough going back to gingerbread after tasting the sweetness of Jelly Bean.

Sent from my Genesis that does what Nintendon't
Am I the first one to do so? As I got out of my car the phone fell out of my jacket pocket and as I heard the thud and skitting sound I thought fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu just my luck... Well it seems the phone hit on the soft edge where the power button is and slid on the pavement. After wiping the pebbles off of it I've noticed a couple of small indentations in the soft plastic but they are barely noticeable and not a single scratch on the screen. I guess this phone is pretty durable.

I'm glad that your phone is generally ok.
But reading your story made a part of me die inside.
"fuuuuuuuuuu" indeed
I did the same thing with my Rezound when I first got it.
I dropped it as I was walking to the car and it took quite a tumble!
Several scratches in the outside plastic but the screen survived.
That was before I had any case on it too.
Makes a tear in your eye when you drop a brand new phone.

Otterbox Commuter Series - Can't beat that!
Not sure I would say this phone is durable based on that one case, but I can certainly say you were lucky. Truth is any phone will break if it hits the ground at the right angle. Doesn't even have to be a large drop.
I would certainly felt like crap had I broken the phone already, but I don't really want to cover it up
I've dropped my DNA on a tile floor from chest height and couldn't find any marks anywhere to show where it hit. Lucky or durable, I don't know.

Lucky.
My wife has been dropping her Gnex constantly since January. It finally cracked last week. If it doesn't break the first time you drop it, you aren't dropping it correctly
I cant wait to see tech sites do durability tests

I haven't dropped my DNA...but...my Samsung Fascinate was dropped hundreds of times from carpets to two meters, and it still is fully functional with no damages done to the screen. The Fascinate surely looks like a plastic toy, but it is a boss.

I think my wife dropped it on a pebble, looking at the impact area.
Putting a case on this would be like throwing a tarp over a Ducati.
I've dropped one phone in 12 years. I am consciously reminding myself not to drop a phone when using it.
