Anyone know how to raise the speaker volume levels for the LTE? I preordered 2 phones and both have very low volume when set to max and halfway there is no sound. Tried Volume+ with no improvements.
My Bestbuy has no phones to swap out.

I've seen so many mixed reports about the EVO LTE speaker. Some people say it's great and louder than their OG EVO 4G. Others say it's significantly more quiet.
I wonder what's going on with all the mixed reports? I suspect people are just inherently bad at judging audio. I wish we had more objective tests for smartphone speakers. All reviewers should use a loudness/dB meter with the phone at maximum volume, playing a standard sine tone, with the meter recording at a standard distance away from the speaker. Also check for clipping and find out the maximum volume where clipping doesn't occur. GSMArena is the only site I've seen that does a test similar to this, but they don't do it for every review unfortunately.
In any case, I would hope the EVO LTE speaker is at least as loud as the OG EVO's, considering that my OG EVO's speaker was too quiet in my opinion.
I strain to hear people when the volume is maxed out. I'd say that's pretty silly. I would expect to be able to hear easily at halfway. I can deal with it, but it is slightly disappointing.
I would say make sure you have nothing covering the speaker....I noticed while playing games the sound seemed low.....I moved my finger ever so slightly and holy crap I needed to turn that shît down!!! I have also heard that some cases are to blame....
Just my 2 cents......my speaker kicks some major a$$

I'm not sure if there's a couple extra speakers, but I'm talking about the part that is up against my ear when I'm making a phone call. There's nothing covering that up except my ear, haha.

I haven't tested this but you can try turning on Hearing Aids in Settings > Call > Hearing Aids. It says it will amplify in-call volume.

It's interesting that there is almost a 2 dBA difference between the HTC One X International and AT&T versions. That is enough of a difference to be easily detected by human ears. What is the explanation for this? Software differences? Standard process variation of amplifier and speaker components? Different circuits between the international and AT&T versions? Measurement error?
It also means we can't assume the EVO LTE will be the same. I wish Anandtech would review the EVO LTE.

Seriously though, I would try to exchange it if you can....mine is too loud and I have to turn it down all the time.
I dont know what speakers you guys are talking about but when I have a call on speakerphone it is very low. When I stream music it is also very low. Does anyone know why?
When im talking on the phone regularly(right up to my ear), the volume is excellent.
Is there anyway to turn the settings up like we did in the EVO 3D?

I just compared the rear speakers on my EVO LTE vs my original EVO 4G. Both on maximum volume outputting the same audio.
The original EVO 4G was noticeably louder than the EVO LTE. It's sad that the EVO LTE (at least mine) has made such a regression, especially considering that the rear speaker on the original EVO 4G already wasn't sufficiently loud in my opinion.
Hopefully we come up with a fix for this.
I am also having volume issues both with speakerphone and in call with the phone up to my ear. I have to strain to hear the person on the other end when driving. This was not an issue with the og evo.
speakerphone on evo 4g lte is def. lower than OG Evo. I am experiencing the same issue.

Coming from the EVO if I watch a youtube video I can crank it pretty loud. Especially if I cup my hand around the speaker. The speaker volume (speaker phone speaker, not ear piece speaker) on this EVO 3D sucks balls! Wondering if I got a dud or if others notice this too???
Same here wish i could get the dsp control from EVO
Your not the only one! I thought it may have been just me. I was using google Nav and it is very much noticeably quieter then my 4G. So much so I could barely hear it over the road noise in my car. I'm hoping its a software fix and not an indication of a crummy speaker.
Maybe they made it a lighter speaker considering how many broke on the evo 4 g
Me personally, I had to have it replaced twice (on my 4g) N I'm not a frequent user of the speaker phone.

+1 on the super quiet speaker compared to OG EVO...
Thanks for the good insight here
I truly learned about many of this, but never the less, I still thought it was beneficial.
Same here. Sound quality is far inferior to my Evo's. However, certain rom/kernel combo's I used on my Evo would yield radically different audio quality, sometimes so bad that I thought the speaker may have been blown. Switching to a different kernel fixed it. Point is, hopefully it's just got some crummy audio drivers and can be improved upon, hopefully greatly improved upon...because I'm rather disappointed with audio quality at the moment.
On a positive note, it sounds great through my headphones, and the built in sound EQ in the music app isn't too bad either.

The sound quality and volume is great through the headphones. I'm using my Skull Candy's and it is FAR more impressive than my OG Evo. With the stock HTC music app, there is a built in EQ (only for headphones), and it has quite a few pre set options, all of which make noticeable and significant audio changes. I am pleased with audio quality over my headphones. The volume is capable of being too loud, where I wouldn't want it up all the way (not distorted though). That wasn't possible with my OG Evo, it would never really get that loud.
This is one of my biggest gripes so far. Even though the volume on my Epic wasn't fantastic, it is still louder than the 3D. I just hate that the ringtones and notifications aren't as loud.
sounds sucks

Thanks for starting this thread. I think you've convinced me to stick with EVO 4G.
The physically smaller screen (narrower). Resolution is important but so is physical size.
The USB on the side (I like to stand it up while using Google Nav) and power is setup to come in from the bottom on two cars (one being a pro-clip) and another a hole I drill in an drawer on my dashboard. Landscape Navigation is dumb. I want to see where I going more than where I could go.
No Kick Stand (not a biggy).
Suspected lower battery life (yet to be really proven though).
Lower Resolution Camera (for normal non-3D).
And now a worse speaker. I thought the EVO 3D speaker was a step down from the old Touch Pro2. And you folks are saying they stepped it down again. Ugh.
Not Rooted (but will likely happen). I was gonna just wait until it's rooted.
Mushy buttons. Although the camera button looks slick.
Next to being a Good Phone, Navigation is probably my next most important use. And beyond that the next most important is Tethering.
I was really looking forward to a new toy. But I have to be practical sometimes.

Glad I could help you make your decision. As for the screen size, its basically the same. yes its a little taller and more narrow but the resolution makes up for that 10x over IMO.
the usb on the side has its pros and cons to me. I didnt like it on the bottom cause I would plug it in to the car charger and turn on google maps and put the phone in the cup holder and it would sit on the charger which couldnt be too good for it. now that it is on the side it is more uncomfortable to use while its plugged in but once I get a charging dock I think I will like it more.
No kickstand does suck but a lot of the cases they are making come with one if that is a must.
personally, I think the battery life is amazing! but I am comparing it to a 1 year old battery my evo had.
I think camera resolution has nothing to do with anything.
My friends 5MP iphone camera took WAY better pics then my 8MP EVO camera. Besides, this camera takes 3D pics.
The low speaker volume which does suck may be fixed with software once the phone is rooted I'm hoping.
I'm also not in love with the power button. especially now that I put a tpu case on. sometimes takes me a few tries to turn my screen on/off.
And it WILL get rooted. just a matter of time. I'm thinking it will be in the next week or two.
Without headphones it sucks
if they dont come up with a fix for the audio iam goin back to my samsung epic unfortunately.i have 2 hear my music..my only MUST is a great speaker for my Pandora when @ work..i have to pull the phone up close 2 hear anything
I think if we complain enough to HTC they can patch with an update
i hope so..i love the phone besides it being 2 low..way 2 low
I thought my phone was broken. No, the speakers on the EVO 3D is just BAD! =(
There have been a few posts regarding the poor quality of the Evo 3D's speaker. Many people state that the volume is just plain low, while others have been saying that their speakers sound blown at higher volume settings. I was of the latter, and asked people for their opinions on this post.
I ended up going to Best Buy and listening to their demo unit to immediately find that my speaker was defective. The demo unit was fine and comparable to the original Evo's speaker. They exchanged it for me with absolutely no hassle. The difference is night and day. My first Evo 3D could not play any notifications/ringtones beyond the halfway volume indicator without distortion. The new phone's speakers are fine - absolutely no complaints.
If you have a phone with distortion, it is not supposed to be that way. Hopefully, you'll be able to exchange it for a working unit.
BTW - I noticed that the new Evo 3D has a different screen. Both are hardware 002, but the newer screen has a more yellowish tint than the original. This is pretty much unnoticeable unless the 2 screens are compared, but (as others have reported) there are at least 2 different types of screens.
Mine sounds blown when playing YouTube videos I'll check for regular music.
Yep, sounds sooooo blown. What to do?
Edit
Uninstalled dsp manager and sounds way better now.

I can't say much about the sound while using the headphones since I've only done it a few times. It sounded loud enough to me. But I use this as my music player in my car all of the time. I have a fairly decent sound system in my car and can't turn this up all the way because it is so strong. I usually have it a couple of clicks below max, and I still get amazing sound out of it.

I can't speak to the phone's performance for car audio but the head phone experience makes this a phone a top contender, in my opinion.
I switched from the EVO 3D, and the difference is laughable when using head phones. People have said the Beats Audio experience is just bass heavy but I've noticed some good clarity in the highs as well.
Only draw back is you'll have to load your audio on the SIM card instead of using streaming services (Spotify, etc.). I don't think Beats currently kicks in with those.

Take this as a caveat as I do not own the phone but I've been playing with phones for the last 2 months to figure out which one to buy - yea I over do it
-
The clarity on the razr is a wee bit better; the rezound is a lot louder. The photon is extermely good - maybe better than the razr (hard to tell since i could not compare them side by side) but the photon was better than the epic touch in terms of clarity.
-
The rezound is loud and 'clear' enough for me. With ear buds (I used kilips s2 to test) the rezound was extermely good; as good or better than the razr.
-
The evo-3d was a dog in many ways.
-
If I were you I would do what I did; go by verizon - plug in your earphones and test
-
The photon is a really nice phone (i really wanted an oled display; but I think - about 90% sure) I will go with the rezound over the epic touch, razr or gnexus. Just a trade off of pros/cons across the various phones. The big negative of the rezound for me is the dispaly visiblity outside. It is a lot better than the evo-3d but kind fo sucks comapre to the other phones i listed above.

If you want it to sound really good, make sure you get a good auxiliary cable for it. The best I've found (and I've tested way too many) is Auvio Stereo Audio Cable. A bunch of places have it, like Radio Shack or Best Buy. They're extremely tough (they have a braided wrap around the cord), sound amazing, and have a gold coating to ensure the sound is clear with no interference. They also seem to work with the stock music player using the Beats enhancer. Plus if you download the DSP apk and install it on your phone, you'll have even more ways to push more sound out of this.

Ever since I booted up the DNA, the speaker sounded outrageously loud distinguishably.
I pulled out my old Samsung Fascinate and tested its decibel level at full volume...and guess what; the full volume from the Fascinate is close to what the DNA produces at the lowest volume level!!!
At full volume from the DNA, it clearly eats up the sound from my laptop at its full volume.
Nonetheless the sound quality even at full is just superb with no distortion nor uneven dynamics of each frequencies (From standards of a phone of course), but it is just too damn loud even at the lowest level.
Yeah I like how loud and clear it is, but I also find it annoying that this thing is still quite loud at the literal lowest volume setting haha. Oh well...

You could test your DNA's decibel levels and have HTC determine if your device is functioning as it should be. But I doubt that yours is a faulty one, as HTC would test all products during the manufacturing stage.

GSM arena tested it and it did very well it is supposed to be 83.1 decibels so I suppose if yours is less than that then your speaker is faulty. I feel like mine is not that loud of a speaker so I may have the same problem as you.:crying:
True.
I would agree, it seems rather loud, especially for some of the ringtones. It also depends on the ambience of the room obviously. In a quiet house where no noise is made for several hours, a simple tone on low volume seems too loud. Though when I go outside, sometimes the speaker is not loud enough. I can't ever find that happy medium.
Ha! OK, I thought I was the only one to think this phone was loud. In fact, I even seem to remember seeing another post on here about the phone being too quiet. Whaaaa?!? I find myself attempting to turn down the earpiece volume even though it's already on the lowest setting. Sometimes I think people sitting next to me are listening in... I can use the earpiece as a speakerphone in a quiet setting. Any devs out there planning on creating a custom ROM would do themselves good to add a wider sound range for the earpiece speaker.
Mine is noticeably loud but not like, exceptionally so. I usually keep it like 2 notches below full and the ringtones are kind of "normal volume".
This is interesting. I have found my DNA to be too quiet even with volume at 100%. I can barely hear (let alone understand) the navigation voice when driving in my car. Though I do find the earpiece to be ridiculously loud. Other people around me can easily hear the caller speaking when I'm on the phone. I'll have to see if I can find a way to test it.
Put me in the "too loud on speakerphone" category. The sound is clear, but it is WAY too loud at the lowest volume setting on speakerphone. It's a real problem for me, as I ALWAYS use the speakerphone, but I don't want everyone within 50 feet to hear my conversation. It's crazy-loud.
Is there any way to tweak this? Some dbproperties, or whatever? Also, has anyone been able to root this phone? I can't find any instructions that actually work. Thanks
ClarkSt,
Adjusting output level from software or kernel isn't yet possible on this device, but you can reduce the speaker volume manually; simply cover the speaker bar with your finger or some rubber or wood material to the length which you want it to be.

Yeah, it's pretty loud for me too, but only on the second setting level, the first level is perfect on mine, I compared it to a Galaxy S2 and Nexus.

The speakers on the One are much higher quality than those on the Atrix. I would imagine if you are hearing more hiss, it's because of the higher fidelity audio. For example: When you use cheap $10 earbuds, music of all bitrates/quality sound the same. When you upgrade to high quality headphones you can actually tell when audio is low-fidelity. Voice calls are as low-fi as audio gets! The quality of connection, nearby radios, and what type of phone your partner is talking on all make a difference as well.
The system-wide Beats EQ could also be the culprit, but I don't have a One yet so I can't say for sure
I think the speaker on my one is pretty awesome. But my previous phone was an iPhone 4s. Sounds super clear and people on the other end don't even realize they are on speaker.

I agree about the static but for music and YouTube videos and movies I think it's quite awesome compared to any phone. The stereo sound coming out of the speakers has almost like a 3d effect to it.

Agreed! If the call sounds bad, its most likely the network considering this phone is designed for HD Voice.
The calls sound just OK when I have them on speaker. When it's silent I hear this faint hissing and static that I didn't hear on my Atrix, and sometimes voices sound muffled/static-y if the other person isn't speaking loud enough. I don't think there is anything wrong with the phone itself as the speakers sound fine when playing music. Like some of you said probably just a network thing.
maybe you can change your network and try again.
i think maybe you can change your Network operator and try again.
