[Q] Asurion: Found lost phone - HTC EVO 3D

I've received a replacement for a lost Evo 3D. The replacement is an E4GT.
I then found the lost phone.
Question is, can I send Asurion the previously-lost Evo 3D in the return envelope? It has a funky screen (though I think it's the mainboard, as about 20% of the time when powering on the screen, it's heavily flickering/artifacting) and I'd really rather have the E4GT.

Keep both, use 1 for spare as long as u have not had to pay for the replacement

You can send it back, however as you claimed it as lost they will lost likely not expect a return as that's what your paying for.
However I would expect that the IMEI on that phone (or whatever Sprint tracks) will be blacklisted after that. I think you could still use it on Boost/etc though, not sure on that though.

If your other phone was reported lost/stolen and a replacement issued, the IMEI will be blocked on the lost phone. Sprint rarely if ever unblocks a reported lost phone. You can flash it to some other carrier as mercury said, that is about the options.

Actually, the "contract" you sign with Asurion when you make a claim says that the lost phone IS property of Asurion, and if it is ever found, you are to return it to them. Contact them to get a return envelope. As stated above, the ESN will be blocked, so you can't activate it anyway.

Or, if you are dishonest, you could sell it for parts on eBay to make back some of your deductible. Not that I would personally.

Wait, they gave you an EVO 4G LTE? They have them in stock? Wow, looks like no one has a straight story there. I had to have my original EVO 3D replaced last week. Called on Wed about it, was told it was on back order and I'd get a "NEW" model. Got a "refurbished" on Friday which had problems. Called again, got another refurbished phone yesterday... Asked them several times to just send me an upgraded model if they kept putting me on the back order list, and they said they had NONE. Figures...

Yea, I was wondering what a E4GT is???

I believe he means the Epic 4g. And I hear you on the refurbs. My original evo got replaced with 5 different refurbs, all had major defects. They finally got my a new 3d and no problems so far.

I was happy, I was getting sick of the 3D's crappy screen with the almost non-existent viewing angle.

Oh, I feel stupid now...

I found confirmation that you ARE supposed to turn in your lost phone, if you find it. This is written on the paper that comes with the replacements:
"Found or recovered equipment replaced by Asurion is the property of the insurance program and must be returned and can not be reactivated."

I don't think anything has changed in two years, but a while back I lost my blackberry bold 9700, got a replacement through insurance, found my old one, both worked, but ended up selling both through ebay. As far as I know they only block ESN numbers through CDMA providers. I have never heard someone buy a GSM phone and have it not be able to be activated.
My question is, has there been any change to this since 2010? Or is it different from iPhones/Androids? It seems to me, A) Insurion gets their monthly payment, and the deductible, so they get all their money, so chances are they don't really care. and B) if someone buys the "lost/stolen" phone, now they have to sign up for a contract with the carier, which gets them more money, so they probably don't care either.

I hope they read this thread and file lawsuits with every single one of you. IT'S PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT RUIN INSURANCE COMPANIES! AND COST US HONEST PEOPLE MORE MONEY! then again, I don't pay insurance because I DON'T BREAK MY PHONE!

Sorry for an accident? I guess? Regardless of the fact that I've been paying full TEP for almost 2 years and $100 for the new phone?
Even the people that are actually filing fraudulent claims, they're really not hurting anyone except POSSIBLY themselves. These insurance companies aren't exactly going bankrupt. It's like grocery stores, they budget for shoplifting. Shoplifting isn't right, but it isn't hurting the store or the other customers. Same thing with insurance.

I know I'm feeding the troll, but:
This is exactly what the insurance companies want you to think. Maybe living in Florida has influenced my perspective, but they always claim poverty from fraud or nonexistent hurricanes while paying out less than half of premiums in claims.
Plus, it would cost more to sue than just ignoring it since the wholesale cost is less than the deductible plus monthly premiums.

Ruin insurance companies??? LOL Yea paying $8 a month for years and then charging $100 deductible for a refurbished phone that you could get for $120 is HARDLY losing money for the insurance companies. I guess your an exception to everyone else that happens to lose a phone or the phone malfunctions.
What WOULD ruin insurance companies would be if everybody was perfect like you and nobody lost their phones and their phones never broke! Then we wouldnt need insurance in the first place.

Replacement Evo but contemplating not returning the defective Evo

Just got my order number to get my new replacement evo. The csr told me that the defective unit has to be received by Sprint within 35 days or a maximum non-return fee of $350 will be charged to my account. Has anyone ever not returned their phone? Any negative side effects of not returning a phone that retails for $550 when it can be sold for more than the non-return fee of $350?
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
My guess would be that once you activate the replacement the ESN of the other phone would be flagged as bad if not returned. I could be wrong.....but so is this idea.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, this is a bad idea! I was just wondering if anyone had done this before.
Well seeing how you paid 200 the 350 charged to your account would mean you paid 550 for the phone as long as you paid it I would think the esn would be good lol
I think as long as you pay the $350 the ESN should be fine.
When my OG evo broke i got a replacement phone and my phone was due back on a certain date. i forgot the date but lets just say it was due oct 20th. i didnt send my phone back for like 2 months lol. they kept sending me letters and calling me. 3 months in i called them and was like i dont have a shipping label can i get one? they sent me one and extended my return date even more. i sent it in once i got the label.
Maybe I'm missing the point but if its defective why would you want to keep it?!?

I won't say it's perfect, but it works as it should. The camera button is very loose.
And also, if I have 2 evo LTE's that I paid $550 for (including $350 non-return fee and $199.99 cost of the phone), that would mean I have one Evo remaining, and therefore would not lose any money.
Just a thought. Thanks for the input guys.
So you did a claim cause of a loose camera button. But you're willing to keep it and sell it as in good working order.
Like I said its a OCD defective.
I tried doing that with my mogul they charged me took me 2 months to get the refund. If they did it back in 2007 chances are they'll do it now. Don't test your luck

I call shenanigans!
I have an Evo with a loose screen in the lower left corner. After about 2 hours of being disconnected, reconnected, and transfered I was told I have 14 days from date of receiving the phone to return it. If I would like to get another Evo sent as a replacement, I need to give them a credit card # for $549 and they'll send me my new phone! Then credit my bill 2-3 cycles from now!
You believe that crap?
So, after we laughed at that ridiculous statement she told me, she made an E-Ticket for me that dates today. So I can wait for the release date and get a NEW replacement from the store. She couldn't believe it either.
So, if anyone needs a replacement phone before the launch date, good luck! It's a complete nightmare.

Refuse tech support and refuse taking it into a service center. Find a hardware defect. As the last resort say either send a replacement or you want to return the phone for a full refund and your upgrade reinstated. I did not have to say this last part but it would have been next.

No, you have to buy the phone from best buy to get their insurance.
Check your house or renter's policy (I'm assuming you have them for all of your other goodies). That's what I've always used for replacements.

This has not been true for several months. You can add it as long as they can see the phone in question.
Personally I think Sprints is better, but it's much more expensive. You really have to go through them both and compare. In the last year I've made 3 claims (1 OG EVO, and 2 3D's) and each time I had a new phone at my door the next morning. I haven't used Best Buy's program but from what I've heard and read you're pretty much guaranteed to get a refurb and it takes several days for you to receive it. Both plans have their strengths, you just have to look at them and see what's best for you.

I bought the BesyBuy insurance when I got my EVO two years ago. I won't be making that mistake again. While the BesyBuy has no deductible, they have a lot of restrictions on it.
Your phone gets lost or stolen. Too bad if you have BesyBuy. Sprint has you covered.
You dropped your phone in a pool? BesyBuy lets you drown. Thier insurance only covers water damage that didn't occur from immersion. Guess that means if it gets damaged from taking into a steam room. Sprint throws you a life preserver.
Have to file a claim with BesyBuy? Pay $100 deposit for a cheap loaner phone and wait up to 3 weeks. If it still hasn't been repaired, you can then start fighting with BesyBuy for a new replacement phone as the policy says your entitled to. But don't expect them to do it willingly.
File a claim with Sprint? Pay your deductible and they send you a replacement via express shipping with a prepaid return label you put your old phone in after you get the replacement setup.
Yes, you pay more for the Sprint insurance, but you get better coverage and service.
When the usb port broke on my evo, the BesyBuy insurance had been canceled on the two year anniversary of getting the phone. I was supposed to be able to renew but they didn't inform me about it. I had called to give them my new CC for billing after it had been canceled (I didn't know it had been canceled at the time) and they didn't have the decency to tell me. It wasn't until I brought my phone in for repairs two weeks later that I found out about it. Thier solution to the problem? Buy a new phone from them. Needless to say I told them where they could shove their phone and left.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Just put $5-$10 aside each month. If you need a new phone buy a used one with that money and sell your broken one on ebay (you'd be surprised how much you can get). If you are like me, and I suspect a lot of other people, you will never need to buy a replacement and then you will have enough money to buy yourself a new phone before you know it. (selling your current one)
If you lose or break your phone in the first couple months you are out of luck but that's the risk I am willing to take to save money and it hasn't been a problem for me.
Thanks for all the answers looks like bestbuy has more downs than up well right now i have sprints insurance and i think ill keep it
Sent from HTC EVO LTE
Personally I think insurance should only be added for a temporary amount of time. Im already seeing Evo's on ebay selling for $440. Once the price drops a bit more, keeping TEP will be just ridiculous based on the deductibles. Like a poster suggested selling the broken phone and buying a used phone is the way to go.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
true but keep in mind sprint usually does not charge a deductible unless the phone is lost or stolen. If it can still be brought into the store, they can try and fix it. if it cant be fixed, they will replace it probably without a deductible.

Yep, I second this. I have had multiple replacements (maybe 5) in the past 3 years without paying a deductible. The only time they told me that I may have to pay a deductible was when my wife's HTC Hero was physically falling apart. I called Sprint, and they put a note in my account to credit me $100 to cover the deductible if I do bring it in and they have to send it to Asurion. You really can't beat that. If I had put the money in a jar and not had TEP, I would have put $300 in that jar over the past 3 years, and I don't think that is enough to cover the 5 phones I went through. So in my scenario, Sprint worked out. Best Buy would have charged me a deductible each time.

Insurance

Does any one know how long after buying can we still add Insurance?
I dropped mine yesterday and the screen is just black and there is a very miniscule crack at the bottom right corner. The screen doesn't turn on though so I am stuck. I bought mine on June 23rd and received it on June 25th.
I had it in an Incepio case but it obviusly didn't help, it was first time I ever dropped it. It wasn't even that bad of a drop just from table to floor.
I am wondering if I can add insurance and get it replaced after that.

its usually 30 days after purchase.
I wonder if they will check since mine is rooted lol.
Assuming you mean insurance (warranty is something you get for free and doesn't cover this sort of problem)... Whatever the duration is, I'm sure you're still within the window. But they probably will need to see the device first, since you would probably not be the first person to break their phone within that window. Verizon is a bunch of morons, but when it comes to money-making, they're not going to people do that.
I think your best bet would probably be to try to get third-party insurance, like what is offered by SquareTrade... http://www.squaretrade.com/android-landing1.
Keep in mind, whichever insurance you have, you'll still have to pay a deductible to get a new phone (or get your phone fixed). For squaretrade, it's $99.
EDIT: Ensquared seems to have a cheaper option. Both the up-front cost of the plan as well as the deductible are less expensive: http://www.ensquared.com/catalog/phone-insurance/1-year-phone-insurance-smartphone

Buying ebay phones?

I have to wait a little while until my current contract with Sprint is up before getting the Evo LTE. But I see them on ebay for about the same money as one would cost me in the store once I'm upgrade elegible. I'm wondering how the ebay phone process works to get it working on the Sprint network? I've only bought phones from Sprint and BB in the past. I know I need a clean ESN, but what I'm wondering is about activation and insurance. Does it cost me money to activate an ebay phone or can I just do it through the website tools? Is it possible to get insurance for the phone (aftermarket I'd assume)? If so, who do you recommend? Anything else to know about getting it working?

just tell them to turn on the insurance when you activate or they will "forget" to say anything. I bought an OG EVO from e-bay as long as the seller is reputable you will be ok.
I think that technically there's an activation fee, but from what I've seen before it's not that hard to bypass. If you're finding a phone on ebay that costs the same as the subsidized price, then I'd think very hard about what I was doing. These phones are normally 2-4x the price you pay when you get a subsidy; you're putting yourself up for some real risk if an unsubsidized phone costs as little as a subsidized new phone.
If you do buy it though and it does turn out to be a clean ESN/MEID, then first off congrats since you just dodged a massive bullet and saved tons of money, but also go and sign up for TEP, at least for a few months. The only reason I recommend this is because I'm still not 100% sure that the great deal you got is without a hidden problem that could jump out at you and eat your savings.

We're definitely on the same page as far as second-hand devices go. That said, I would love clarification on the fee for hidden issues. It's not something I've ever heard of. I'm not discounting it as a falsehood by any means, I really am just very surprised to see such a thing and would love details. Screenshots work best IMO.
I've seen them go for 300-350 but less than that is a bad phone
Thanks for the input so far. I don't think I can get TEP from Sprint on a phone I did not buy from them. I've found SquareTrade offers a warranty, though. We have used them before, so that is probably the way I'd go there.
There are a lot of these phones on ebay for under $250 right now. I figure $250 is about the break even point when I include the activiation fee and almot 10% sales tax we pay around here. I can't imagine they are all scams. I appreciate the concern, though.

you can totally get TEP from sprint on a phone you did not buy from them, I have got it on the last phone I bought. I just asked and they turned it on, it was that simple.

Cool. Good to know.
I look at Craigslist and Ebay almost daily to see what they're selling for. I have one and also the GSIII. One must go soon and if its the EVO, I don't think I'll get more than $300 for it. Some are selling brand new EVO's, well suppose to be, for $250 on CL. My opinion, which means nothing, thinks that maybe the EVO has a bad reputation right now from the people that swapped them out for the GSIII. Not sure.
Seems like the S3's are going for much more money. Could be it's because they work for every carrier?

There are ways, but it isn't the norm. And is against policy

S3's are offered by all 4 but do not have interchangeability . A sprint s3 will not work on Att etc.
It's more of a Flagship, heavily advertised phone that more people want. Simply supply vs demand

I bought new evo lte from ebay seller. When I called sprint to activate on my line the agent even asked do you want to keep TEP and I said yes. No problem at all and it is there looking on sprint's website in my profile.

i have bot multiple phones/devices on e-bay. have not had any issues with activation.
one time i bricked a device and the guy i originally bot it from was able to fix it for a small fee.
The activation fee is only on new phones. It is only when the esn is first activated on sprint. So if I bought a new phone and activated the esn but left it new in box and then sold it to you there'd be no activation fee as the esn was already in sprints system

phone insurance?

I just bought my phone last week. Do you people recommend the insurance? I bought it from best buy should I choose their insurance or through sprint. I didnt think I would need it until I read the lazy panda s-off thread.
I bought insurance thru gocare.com. Still haven't used it but it is still WAY cheaper than Sprint and best buy. I bought it really for piece of mind. I'm very gentle with my love and she has a Otterbox defender on.

I think (JMO) that insurance thru sprint is ridiculous. I've heard its up to $11 a month with a $100 deductable. Over 2 years of your contract, that will put you at $500+. And if you do break it, you could pay over $600 total invested. You can get our phones for $300-350 on ebay. Its worth it to me to roll the dice, be careful with my phone. I could see it being worth it if you are really clumsy, but then you should probably have an old Nokia. Not something with a glass screen.

24 * 11 = 264. Where did you get 500+?

The deductible on this phone is $150 not $100.

Im not trying to stir up anything just asking for all opinions. Thanks for the input. I didnt have insurance on my last phone but I am scared about bricking. I will give you something to laugh about I screwed up trying to root with zedomax method. I had a blank screen with no icons and was freaking then I factory reset (stupid htc sync).
I currently have the Best Buy insurance, and I'm getting ready to drop it because since I picked up my EvoLTE, they have double billed me. The last time I called them to handle it, they totaled screwed up my whole BB geek squad acct. They dumped all the other devices off the insurance.
I never had a problem before with them, but I think it's time to look elsewhere.

I have insurance on my phone and my wife's. It's really a convenience thing for us. New phone the next day and the deductible added to our bill. We don't have extra cash to buy one, and we don't feel like using craigslist. Those pros outweigh the cons of the monthly fee and deductible.

If your phone is rooted, you want insurance.
Its protection from yourself
That's a good point too. My lte is rooted, her design 4g isn't, but our 18 mo old daughter gave the design 4g a coffee bath this morning. Oops.

Yep always take the insurance, not from BB the gf had it through them and they apparently do not cover theft

i would go with best buys, there is not a down payment and they dont even know how to check if it is rooted or not
You generally do NOT want best buys insurance with this phone.
The reason being: for ANY issue, they take your phone and you get a refurbished one. Thats great and all.......unless you care about being S-OFF
Get it from Sprint because if anything fails guess what, you get stuff fixed for free. The only thing techs can't fix is physical damage and liquid damage.

Yep, and they'll charge you $50 deposit for it too.

I refuse to pay insurance, it's ridiculous (the price)
I always keep my old phone just in case something happens.
The Evo was the first phone I ever bought full price and still I wouldn't pay insurance.
Just be gentle with ur phone and keep it in a nice case.
Well some of us don't believe in having a phone die on us after the 30 day return window is up, or get lost, stolen, or damaged. These phones cost quite a bit regardless of whether or not we have a spare, and its comforting to know we can just get a replacement phone if something does happen

Agreed. And with everything that could go wrong with rooting/flashing/ect I personally don't think its a smart move to not have it.
There have been multiple people with devices that just randomly bricked doing things it shouldn't brick while doing.
