Does any one know how long after buying can we still add Insurance?
I dropped mine yesterday and the screen is just black and there is a very miniscule crack at the bottom right corner. The screen doesn't turn on though so I am stuck. I bought mine on June 23rd and received it on June 25th.
I had it in an Incepio case but it obviusly didn't help, it was first time I ever dropped it. It wasn't even that bad of a drop just from table to floor.
I am wondering if I can add insurance and get it replaced after that.

its usually 30 days after purchase.
I wonder if they will check since mine is rooted lol.
Assuming you mean insurance (warranty is something you get for free and doesn't cover this sort of problem)... Whatever the duration is, I'm sure you're still within the window. But they probably will need to see the device first, since you would probably not be the first person to break their phone within that window. Verizon is a bunch of morons, but when it comes to money-making, they're not going to people do that.
I think your best bet would probably be to try to get third-party insurance, like what is offered by SquareTrade... http://www.squaretrade.com/android-landing1.
Keep in mind, whichever insurance you have, you'll still have to pay a deductible to get a new phone (or get your phone fixed). For squaretrade, it's $99.
EDIT: Ensquared seems to have a cheaper option. Both the up-front cost of the plan as well as the deductible are less expensive: http://www.ensquared.com/catalog/phone-insurance/1-year-phone-insurance-smartphone

Lol... I need to get used to this many-carriers-for-the-same-phone scenario. I'm used to just assuming everyone is on Verizon in my HTC Incredible forums
The point still stands though... I doubt any of the carriers would be dumb enough to give someone an insurance plan without seeing the phone first. But, since I've never gotten insurance on my own carrier, let alone yours, I can't say for sure.

you are not going to believe this, i thought i would try and get insurance anyways, and after a 5 min conversation with the CS t-mobile dude and him telling me i was over the 14 days for insurance, he gave it to me. I called and reported lost after 2 days and after $130 later i am getting one today delivered at home. I even asked if it would be refurbished or not and lade at Assurion said most likely new since it is so new. Now i have to wait and see.

So my phone has been overheating and I called in last week to get another one, they said they will send out one as soon as possible. I was looking at the status email that they sent me and in it there is this blurb:
Get started with your

Replacement device.
How are there refurbs for this phone already? I usually don't have a problem with refurbs but since i bought a new phone I am expecting a new phone as replacement . Should I keep the refurb or pester them for a new one?

Because of all those fanboys returning their Rezound to get the Gnex. Also, there were some phones that did have issues (overheating, "pink buttons", data drops, stuck pixels, etc.).
If I were you, I would accept the refurb device and check EVERY single thing on the phone out to find any issues whatsoever. If you do find something, simply call back and explain how upset you are that you have received two defective devices. Maybe then they CSR can get a brand new one sent out to you.
sadly... refurb means someone else has already had their penis on the phone.

The reason I am so crazy paranoid about checking my phone for heat is that I do not want to enter the refurb pool. Did it three times on my Incredible. The refurb pool right now is full of overheating and dead pixel phones.
But the bigger question is WHY you are in the refurb pool. Isn't the deal that phones bought now get an extended period through January 15th?

that is why I'm not too worried. if it don't work better, I will just call VZW and get a brand new one. but sometimes, refurb products work better than new. just gonna test this out for now.

Wow. The phone has only been out a month and they're already talking refurbs? Sucks majorly.
My Incredible lasted 18 months but my daughter went through 3 in the last year.
Dumped down the interwebs from my HTC Rezound
the "Jan 15" extended warrenty only applies to phones purchased from Nov 15+ and only from Verizon stores. If you bought one from Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc... then you just have their warrenty, not the Jan 15 one.(already confirmed with a VZW CSR)
I just got a refurb phone and it's noticeably better. Actually have red LEDs now and the audio, while still somewhat hissy, not near as bad.

I bet when January/February come around there will be enough warrantied phones that htc will make the attempt to fix at least most of the broad spectrum issues in them.

There is no way I would accept a refurb at this point. Where did you buy your phone? You should still be in the 30 day exchange window for places like Best Buy.
Do not settle for a refurb! If you do, the chances of you exchanging in the future for a new one are 1 in a million.
Sent via my HTC Rezound using XDA premium app.
I had 3 rezounds in a row with stuck/dead pixels. For my 4th one I contacted warranty again since they offered to charge a new one to my account since I was out of my 14 day period. So the rep was like oh yeah I see those notes but what I can do for you now is ship you out a Thunderbolt. I'm like really? How is that phone an acceprtable replacement for the Rezound? You guys are giving me a dated device in place of a device that just came out? I was like yeah I'm not going to accept an outdated device to have my DOA phone replaced. Then I asked her so basically what you're telling me is I'm SOL and you guys are like hey! Here's an old phone for the brand new one you just go? She's like uh well I don't want to say it like that... I was like then don't say it, just get me a new rezound shipped out. Ten minutes later brand new Rezound shipped out with no issues besides the occasional audio jack bs. Refurbs aren't too bad the quality has gone up. At this point since the device is so new you'll probably be getting someone's return.
I came to this phone from the charge via refurb and the first one I got had a scratch and the audio problem. However, second one looks like it has never been touched. The screen is perfect and the audio jack is significantly better. The hiss is still there but hardly noticeable at all.
If anyone out there in XDA-land has actually warrantied an unlocked or re-locked phone (in store and/or via the 1-800 number), could you please chime in and post your experience (whether you did store or 800 and what happened).
I realize that it may still be too early to ask this question, because the true kicker is whether someone down the supply chain (in store, then in Verizon, then in HTC) noticed and charged back to your account; as there may not have been enough time for bills to generate after such a chain, but I would love to hear of actual experiences.
If possible, there is no need to report back on Amazon or Best Buy or Guy-On-The-Corner They have different policies. This is a Verizon Corporate inquiry. If anyone sent it back to Verizon, did Verizon ultimately charge you for a new Rezound. Thanks
(I realize there is another thread debating whether or not HTC shares with Verizon, and whether Verizon employees are trained to check. This is not that hypothetical inquiry; I am hoping that only people who ACTUALLY did the swap report in).
Thanks!
This is interesting to me. I'm stuck wanting the "normal", for lack of better words, root and s-off method from the community. I knew that the employees don't care about root as long as they can set it back to stock. That's what I heard from my friend that worked there. I don't know about the HTC unlock though.
I did it with my first rezound. (i baught them at bestbuy for their replacement plan) no questions asked. GIVE ME NEW PHONE, they gave, I was happy.
not that this helps right now, but i should be able to give you an idea in a few days. bought my rezound on the 9th and unlocked and flashed that night, data started not connecting at all on the 13th. called vzw tech support on the 17th telling them what was going on, no mention of whether it was unlocked from either side, got my warranty replacement today. gonna send back the old phone tomorrow.
I had the 'can't charge dead batteries issue' the other night. Went to store and replaced with new battery. No problems.

Well - You did come closest to answering out of all the other responses PLEASE let us know if you ever get billed for it (which can take months).
When I turned my Charge in to Best Buy for the upgrade plan, the dude actually SHOWED OFF to the other folks how modded that thing was, he was in awe. As much flashing I did on that thing, it should have melted. They don't care, or are not paid enough TO care. Never had a problem at the VZW store either, but those guys are usually idiots anyways.
Local best buy for me looked for a superuser app, didn't see it, then exchanged the phone. Had they looked at the bootloader they would have seen the relocked. Bunch of idiots...lol.

While Best Buy is not relevant (they probably have their own policies), that is kind of disturbing. It means they are looking.
Anyone actually do this with *VERIZON*, would love to hear if they ultimately charge you.
I know this is not exactly the same, but I exchanged my old Samsung Fascinate for a Droid Charge under warranty through Verizon. I restored the Fascinate but forgot to restore the kernel. It showed some hacked version under the system settings and was really obvious.
I sent it back and never heard anything about it...
i'm curious, if they do charge wouldn't that mean they should send me the phone that was broken back since in theory i would have purchased the second phone at full price?

YES! That is why I was hoping to hear of people's actual responses with Verizon. Not having much luck with the "actual" or "verizon" part of the inquiry, but it is probably still too early to really know. The phone hasn't been unlocked long enough for people to unlock, decide they need to warranty replace, exchange it with VERIZON, and then get another bill cycle or 2 or 3 to see if they were charged.
... but I keep hoping to hear from anyone who actually warrantied an unlocked phone back to a Verizon corporate store or Verizon 800. As time goes by, maybe we will learn

Please do. I suspect it will take months (has to get from Verizon store to headquarters as part of however often they ship, then Verizon has to batch all their warranty replacements back to HTC {if that's how they do it} however often they ship, then HTC has to notice {if they ever do} and push back {if they ever do}, and the Verizon has take the pushback and bill). I suspect that this can take months, at which point the question will be moot (because it will be as it will be), but it was a pipe dream of mine to see what actually happens, given the amount of guessing going on.
Good luck!
I don't see from a legal standpoint how they can do anything...soon as the phone is in their possession they are taking responsibility for it no? Therefore if it is not covered by HTC for some reason, it would be there fault.

There was a ridiculous number of acknowledgment clicks re voided warranty through the unlock process. I would consider this situation exactly like if you brought a phone to Verizon saying it won't work, and the somewhere down the line someone finds the water sensor tripped. The dude behind the counter at Verizon is not going to know at the time, but as the phone winds its way through the warranty replacement chain, someone will figure it out; and they probably will charge you for your replacement.
No one would be screaming 'illegal' in that case; and I believe the cases are identical.
Please note - I hope this is not the case; I have not unlocked my phone (despite desperately wanting to run Nils' ROM) because I dont have $650 to start again. BUT, I can easily see the parallel here.

I don't know how to feel about that either. When an employee of a cellphone provider looks at the available water marks and SAYS your phone is fine and has not received water damage and they are going to replace it for you...anything found afterwords is Verizon's own fault and they will have to deal with. I actually had apple try and pull that once. Had am iPhone where the wifi card was bad, tech at apple looked at their two water markers and said it was fine, that there was a definite issue and shed replace it. Got a call from apple saying the water marker was tripped and I'd have to pay for the replacement. I told them exactly what happened and they left me alone real quick.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
... and there you go. That is the heart of my inquiry.
The initial person (counter at the store) will be irrelevant, and if people turn in Re-Locked phones, will they ultimately get charged by Verizon EXACTLY the way Apple proceeded with you.
Hi All,
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about making claims to Assurion.
TL-DR
Make sure to verify the hardware is fully in tact when getting an Assurion claim. Report even the slightest defect.
I dropped my phone about 3 weeks ago. Bummer. I got my "Like New" Assurion replacement. I immediately noticed the battery door didn't seem to fit well on the replacement, and would come unclipped very easily; sometimes when pulling out of my pouch. I shrugged it off as a problem with the door itself from opening and re-closing during the S-Off process, and just planned to buy a new door.
After flashing ROMs, S-Offing, etc, I noticed the door fit perfectly on the original as I was migrating all the data from the device (door was on because WiFi wouldn't connect otherwise). Hmmmmm.
I closely looked at the two devices, and noticed a very very small bulge coming from underneath the red cover that holds the battery. The bulge is so small, it almost seems too small to cause any problems, but it is.
I called Assurion, and they told me that if I had called in sooner, they'd send a replacement, but because I was outside of my 7 day window, they would not send a replacement.
I spoke to a supervisor (before I had my morning coffee; bad idea) and laid into him. He snapped back a bit that I should have let him finish, and he'd override the policy and send me a new replacement without forcing me to make a new claim.
In closing, if you're going to make an Assurion claim, physically inspect the device very carefully and report the smallest of problems you may find, even if you can't find the cause or think you may be imagining it.
Something interesting I noticed is that the new device did not have the VOID sticker on the screw, because I was thinking about swapping the back from the old phone to the new one. They may not have noticed, but I didn't want to chance it. The good news is now, if I have to replace a screen or something, the missing VOID sticker means I can replace the parts and they won't know I was tinkering inside .
Hope this helps someone avoid future frustration.
When I was having my OG Droid replaced, they kept sending me refurb ones that had literally TON of dust under the glass (I literally could not use it outside because of how much dust it was, you couldn't see the screen). I went through like 6 of them before they just sent me a new D2G.
I highly recommend being anal as HELL when you get a refurb from them.
I also report mine as lost not broken or any of that. Had a case were my mom sent one back and they said they "never got it". Believe me when I say this my mom sent the broken phone back. If they want their phones back they should us a carrier that allows tracking. That said if you are going to send one back be sure to get proof of shipping from the post office. That at least proves you shipped it then it can be between them and not you and them.
Edit:
And before someone jumps my ****, its not like I "loose" phones everyday. I have only had one claim on the EVO3D about a year ago or more.

I had the same issue with returning my brother's dumbphone. They said they had not received the phone and charged the account $519. Luckily I had held on to the proof of shipment. Two months later and after my account had been suspended twice for not paying the balance they corrected the error.

Asurion DROPPED me from my insurance saying I filed too many claims in a year, when in fact they were on different phones and 14 months apart. I called Verizon and Asurion, they realized they misappropriated a claim I made for my mom on her DInc2 that my baby brother decided needed a bath. They said I should have used all of her information on the claim, I told them no because it asked for the account holder info which is in fact ME.

Wait, WTF? They didn't send you a BNIB rezound? I busted my D2 back a year + ago and they sent out a BNIB. If I have to pay 100 bucks for a "deductible" they better send me a new one. not a refurb POS.
Well I am glad you all had GREAT experience with Assurion. I have had 1 bad experience and it ticked me off. Had a 32gb iPhone 4S. Notice the S there. Well long story short screen cracked, paid 200, got a new one sent to me. BNIB! Well I open it. Hmm something is not right here. Wait what is this? A iphone 4? Wheres my S. Wait theres more. There is a memory change? 16GB? Really? I called and the Support said that is the phone I had insured. NOOOOOOOOOOO SIR. Thats like using a strap on with the wife. Its just wrong! So I called Verizon thinking last resort ill argue with these guys. OMFG! Not only did they contact Assurion for me, but they gave me a 200 Credit on my account, and all I had to do was take the iPhone they sent me to a Verizon store and they replaced it with a 32GB iPhone 4S. Which needless to say I gave to my wife, for her sweet brand new REZOUND!! Never been happier!!

It is overpriced and refurbs suck! I use SquareTrade. If they cannot fix it, they give me full retail for it deposited right to my paypal.

I think it depends on stock. I've received both. I had a work phone stolen and they sent me a BNIB. Same for my WinMo device that was broken by the case VZW sold me.
It's odd how they replace things. When the power button broke on my OG Droid they told me to just send the unit itself and nothing else. I got a refurbished in return. When I bricked my Incredible they sent me a brand new unit with all the accessories and everything.

Damn now that's good service on Verizon's part. But if the 4 had 32gb of memory, how the hell can you tell the 4 and 4s apart? It's the same phone with a new letter behind it and marked up price tag?

Ok i never had a problem with asurion and I am still a noob but I got a custom rom! (4 bricks)finally learned enough to feel less noon. My point is this. All phones should be reported lost. You can keep the broke one and who knows, maybe you learn enough to fix it. I'm still kicking myself in the ass about the one I sent back for a black screen. I know exactly how to fix it now but I sent it back. Grrrrrr

I've received a replacement for a lost Evo 3D. The replacement is an E4GT.
I then found the lost phone.
Question is, can I send Asurion the previously-lost Evo 3D in the return envelope? It has a funky screen (though I think it's the mainboard, as about 20% of the time when powering on the screen, it's heavily flickering/artifacting) and I'd really rather have the E4GT.
Keep both, use 1 for spare as long as u have not had to pay for the replacement

You can send it back, however as you claimed it as lost they will lost likely not expect a return as that's what your paying for.
However I would expect that the IMEI on that phone (or whatever Sprint tracks) will be blacklisted after that. I think you could still use it on Boost/etc though, not sure on that though.

If your other phone was reported lost/stolen and a replacement issued, the IMEI will be blocked on the lost phone. Sprint rarely if ever unblocks a reported lost phone. You can flash it to some other carrier as mercury said, that is about the options.
Actually, the "contract" you sign with Asurion when you make a claim says that the lost phone IS property of Asurion, and if it is ever found, you are to return it to them. Contact them to get a return envelope. As stated above, the ESN will be blocked, so you can't activate it anyway.
Or, if you are dishonest, you could sell it for parts on eBay to make back some of your deductible. Not that I would personally.

Wait, they gave you an EVO 4G LTE? They have them in stock? Wow, looks like no one has a straight story there. I had to have my original EVO 3D replaced last week. Called on Wed about it, was told it was on back order and I'd get a "NEW" model. Got a "refurbished" on Friday which had problems. Called again, got another refurbished phone yesterday... Asked them several times to just send me an upgraded model if they kept putting me on the back order list, and they said they had NONE. Figures...
Yea, I was wondering what a E4GT is???

I believe he means the Epic 4g. And I hear you on the refurbs. My original evo got replaced with 5 different refurbs, all had major defects. They finally got my a new 3d and no problems so far.

I was happy, I was getting sick of the 3D's crappy screen with the almost non-existent viewing angle.
Oh, I feel stupid now...
I found confirmation that you ARE supposed to turn in your lost phone, if you find it. This is written on the paper that comes with the replacements:
"Found or recovered equipment replaced by Asurion is the property of the insurance program and must be returned and can not be reactivated."
I don't think anything has changed in two years, but a while back I lost my blackberry bold 9700, got a replacement through insurance, found my old one, both worked, but ended up selling both through ebay. As far as I know they only block ESN numbers through CDMA providers. I have never heard someone buy a GSM phone and have it not be able to be activated.
My question is, has there been any change to this since 2010? Or is it different from iPhones/Androids? It seems to me, A) Insurion gets their monthly payment, and the deductible, so they get all their money, so chances are they don't really care. and B) if someone buys the "lost/stolen" phone, now they have to sign up for a contract with the carier, which gets them more money, so they probably don't care either.
I hope they read this thread and file lawsuits with every single one of you. IT'S PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT RUIN INSURANCE COMPANIES! AND COST US HONEST PEOPLE MORE MONEY! then again, I don't pay insurance because I DON'T BREAK MY PHONE!

Sorry for an accident? I guess? Regardless of the fact that I've been paying full TEP for almost 2 years and $100 for the new phone?
Even the people that are actually filing fraudulent claims, they're really not hurting anyone except POSSIBLY themselves. These insurance companies aren't exactly going bankrupt. It's like grocery stores, they budget for shoplifting. Shoplifting isn't right, but it isn't hurting the store or the other customers. Same thing with insurance.

I know I'm feeding the troll, but:
This is exactly what the insurance companies want you to think. Maybe living in Florida has influenced my perspective, but they always claim poverty from fraud or nonexistent hurricanes while paying out less than half of premiums in claims.
Plus, it would cost more to sue than just ignoring it since the wholesale cost is less than the deductible plus monthly premiums.

Ruin insurance companies??? LOL Yea paying $8 a month for years and then charging $100 deductible for a refurbished phone that you could get for $120 is HARDLY losing money for the insurance companies. I guess your an exception to everyone else that happens to lose a phone or the phone malfunctions.
What WOULD ruin insurance companies would be if everybody was perfect like you and nobody lost their phones and their phones never broke! Then we wouldnt need insurance in the first place.
Little backstory- I lost my ELTE on my way to work about a good month and a half ago, and when I got there, I was frantic and all kinds of worried. Called and called but to no avail. Called Asurion, payed the deductible and got my new phone the next day in the evening.
Snap back to now, and I find the phone scuttled in some crevice in my parking space at my apartment complex.
The pics show the damage, but this was all about a good while ago and I know its 'blacklisted' since I reported it lost, but the phone turns on and works, aside from the scratches to your fingers.
I don't know how the damage came to it (my car must have run it over and shoved it there), but the phone is here now... Poor little guy.
Question is, what should I do? Should I fix it? Turn it in to Sprint?
Are there any digitizer replacements out for this phone yet that aren't over $70??
Just thought y'all might get a kick from this. I sure did.

I lost my E4G before and could not find it. I called Asurion for a replacement. Subsequently, I found my phone (before replacement arrived). Called and tried to cancel. They said cancellation wasn't an option. Asked them what to do since I found my phone. They said keep it. Number was not blacklisted. Kept the new phone in the box and reactivated the old one. When all is said and done, I traded in the old one towards E3D and activated the BNIB E4G.
Bottom line, call Asurion, told them you found the old phone and want to return the new. They will most likely say no. Tell them you can still use the old, but you must get it removed from blacklist. Hopefully, they can help you from there.

Not sure how much trouble it would be to get the screen fixed, but yeah, beautiful and proper suggestion.
Maybe to someone from CM, or better yet, someone close to deck or toast that could help them out.

Phone is only blacklisted if sprint is called I believe. Making the claim with asurion does not trigger the flag (unless they report it to sprint)

+1 on the donating to dev..prob cost more than u you would want to spend to fix and a dev could use it to test/build etc
Damn it's bent pretty bad also?

According to the terms you agreed to with Asurion when you made the Lost Claim, that phone is the property of Asurion now. The terms say if you ever find a lost/stolen phone, you must return it to them, otherwise it's insurance fraud.
but... if you call them and tell them you found it, and they tell you to keep it, they are giving up the ownership rights to it. then it isn't fraud anymore.
It is very sad to see an android device like that. I much rather prefer it to be an iPhone.
