okay so i see people taking AMAZING pictures with this phone, but i just cant seem to take ANY GOOD pictures! they come out fuzzy or just low HQ. are settings are everyone using to get these AMAZING pictures???
Attachment taken with depth of field effect. Sexy. Not messed with much else. I leave it on auto. I did read up on what ISO and white balance means and what the settings can do for a picture. I suggest researching what each setting does.
Edit: After uploading and looking, the picture looks a bit foggy. No lights on in the room and no flash.
Maybe a higher ISO would have been better, but it was on auto for this pic.

some people are claiming bad camera, make sure the lense is clean, if its smudge or dirty then pics will suck. also if it has focus problems try to manualy focus
Here are some of my shots. Camera settings are stock except for -1 saturation, -1 sharpness, white balance sunny, and ISO 400.
I put them on my dropbox so Tapatalk doesn't kill them with compression.

As smartphone cams go in 2011? Evo 3D Camera: fail.....on an otherwise flagship device for HTC.
If HTC was to upgrade their camera....this would seem to be the release to do it (it by name draws attention to its CAMERA for god's sake). Dissapointing.
You know I've seen some 3vo pics that look god awful, and some that look pretty decent... most of the guys give awful reviews (meaning they don't grasp what a review should be) what makes you think they know how to work hardware (tweak settings..etc) to make a picture look good. lol
it looks fine you can adjust settings for better color.
better than what i thought it was gonna be.

Yep, you're right. Phil just commented saying he didn't optimize the camera before taking the pictures. Just point and Shoot.

My girl has an iPhone, and when we're out and take pics, I have her use her phone because the evo camera sucks. She's always throwing it in my face. I just want to be able to tell her to shove her iPhone up her ass. Also, why does the thunderbolt seem to have such a good camera (and reviews) but the 3ds is just.....eh?? Corner cutting? Cheaper hardware? Is Sprint trying to save coin?

Quality pictures require a quality camera... that's why I have my Canon 40D, 5D and 1Ds.
I also have cameras. Thats mot related to the fact that HTC uses subquality cameras on these high end devices. As a converged device camera I use the pics in conjunction immediately with other apps. My other cameras can't do that.

There wasn't one of those photos where I thought the 4g did better. Clarity was better on the 3vo across the board. Look at the frogs or the last one with the green/pink leaves. Look at where the pink meets the green.
Truthfully I think the 4g could do better. Out of focus. But then again, so is my evo 4g camera

yeah at 1st glance 4G seems better but if you really look clarity is better (as stated above) on 3vo...Frogs (more detail) flowers (same thing) looks like there needs to be some color correction (in processing??) also I just saw the other link in a prev thread and I think there was something in the settings that may somewhat address this???
IANAPhotog...btw
White balance: Lets you change the white balance
to enable the camera to capture colors more
accurately by adjusting to your current lighting
environment.
Auto focus: Enables or disables centered
autofocus. Autofocus is enabled by default.
ISO (photo mode only): Lets you choose an ISO
level or set it back to Auto. Higher ISO numbers
are better for taking pictures in low light
conditions.
would manipulation of these settings make the pics a bit better?
*tho I understand why the test was done with no adjustments via both cams.
Guys check out the new 'Lightbox Photo' app..it takes pics way faster than Vignette etc and has an immediate "fixit" option which makes great fast color/contrast corrections...nice resulting picture.
That's disappointing the 3VO camera is still that far behind iPhone. They should have invested the R&D into a practical camera instead of the 3D stuff. Will probably still end up getting it because it's the next best thing from EVO.
Right now, I carry my little Canon powershot because it takes way better pictures than my ancient 2mp Mogul.
The Evo 3D will obviously take better pictures but I don't think it's as good as my Canon. My plan is for simple pictures I'll carry just the Evo 3d and if I want really nice pictures, then I'll pull the Canon out.
hi guys. im just curious how the video and pictures on the evo3d look compared to other 5 or 8mp cameras. are they sharp ect. how would the evo3d compare to say the iphone 4?
im in the market for a good camera phone
I personally feel the evo3d only takes great pictures sometimes - meaning it is hard to get good pictures.
The pictures tend to look better on the phone than when you look at them on a computer, where they tend to look more grainy when not in the brightest light. This feels like a step down from HTC's other offerings, which can look as good if not better than iphone pictures when pulled to your computer. I have gotten some fantastic pictures, but for the most part the camera has left me a bit wanting.
Playing around with 3d pictures is quite fun, and video recording is very good - particularly the audio, which was lacking in the evo4g.

It takes a much better picture than the Evo4G did. Much sharper looking, even with 3mp less.
However in low light it still gets grainy...the sensor can't help that, but the software can...but it doesn't. It does, however, take fantastic macro shots for a cell phone...surprisingly.
The 5mp cam on the NS4G I had for a few weeks was phenomenal. When I came back to the E3D it really made taking pictures with it seem pointless...and that's not even taking into consideration the .5-1.5 second shutter lag from when you push the button.
For a freakin' cell phone? It's fantastic. I've never used an iphone4 camera but I've only heard good things. But after seeing what a Samsung 5.0mp sensor/lens/software combo can do I am completely down on the E3D's camera. Granted it does 3D and it is a rather compelling effect...though the problems with the 5.0mp single-cam shots get even more pronounced in 3D at 2.5mp.
YMMV, etc etc etc. It is a cellphone after all.
EDIT: Also any shots with motion are pretty much ruined before you take them.
I agree with nhutpham, post number 2. The camera is not nearly what it should be. This phone revolved around its camera's, I mean come on its not called "Shooter" for nothing. 3D pics turn out good, still shots do anyway. But standard pics, thats a whole other ball game. Low light produces bad pics, even with the flash. Some pics will get a greenish tint to them (whites) when using flash. Rather then use all the "auto" settings I find setting things manually will result in better 2D pics. The device was not purchased by me for the camera though. I bought for the dual core processors Though now that I have my dual core I am wishing HTC would have stepped it up on the 2D camera
i think at stock the pictures look ok. but when you adjust iso, sharpness, exposure, contrast in the settings it makes them look much more vibrant and sharp.
i took a compartive shot of small rocks and the evo3d looked crisper and better overall compared to the iphone 4. so the camera cant be all that bad
Maybe this might help. I'm actually surprised at some of the pictures on here.

Being a photographer myself, I am impressed with the camera... but not all of the time. It takes phenomenal pictures outside in a good sunny day and even in overcast. Take the camera inside in average lighting of just about anyone's living room when the sunlight isn't dominating the light, then I'd be reluctant to show it of.
The poorer the lighting, the harder it is to focus and the photos can get very grainy. HTC also chose to compress the photos quite a bit which affects the picture quality, but makes it easier on the phone and network to share and upload. This goes back to a previous comment that they look better on the phone than on a larger display - its the compression.
If you're willing to root and mod this phone, there is a camera mod in the CDMA dev forum for this phone with camera improvements which makes me that much more impressed with the camera. Although, I think all that was changed was the compression for photos and video.
If you are taking a still picture under good light they look really good. If you have kids and are planning to take any pictures of them forget it.
Let's just they are playing baseball and you want to take a picture of them at bat. They get up there and you click the shoot button. The picture is then shown to you for review and you say wait, who the heck is that. Well while you thought you were snapping a picture of your child, by the time the camera actually took the picture your child got a double, the kid after him grounded to third, and in your picture is the batter who was batting 2 guys after him.....Great picture of someone elses child and of course that kid moved so the picture is blurry as well.
Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a little. You would probably get the batter right after him and not 2 guys down in the lineup, but it would still be blurry unless he batted like a statue....
Green, but otherwise good
Ya unfortunately the shutter lag makes the phone worthless in taking non still images.

So I think my phone is taking sweet pics. I just wanted some feedback on any settings that are optimal. I haven't the slightest clue about what I should change the default settings to, but I've read a few really good results by tweaking them a bit. Any advice would be appreciated.
Subscribed - I'd be interested on anyone's input as well!
Try using the Screen Shutter button instead of the dedicated button. I consistently got sharper pics on EVO 3D when I did this.
Also try manually bumping up ISO instead of AUTO. I think AUTO encourages too slow a shutter speed.
Warning on White Balance. What you see on the screen is not what you get before you take the shot. This is a bug IMHO. Always try to get White Balance right. It can really make the a big difference in your photos. Auto tends work badly indoors with any kind of light. Outdoors Auto usually works good. If you get it wrong your photos will be slightly blue or slightly yellow (and sometimes slightly green).

If you get up close, skin looks really pink, and some shots can be grainy from the post capture edits our imaging chip does. I tuned it down a little to see if it would help, and it did, a little.

There's a camera discussion thread here with lots of tips:

Also, don't forget that after you take a pic, you can apply imaging effects, like the high contrast in this pic attached that I just took :O
In gallery, long press the image, edit, effects.

It's noise in the image from high iso which is required to take pictures in low light without motion blur. If you have plenty of light try setting the ISO to 100 or 200 and it should help.
Looks fine on my monitor.
Try takin it off widescreen

Those all appear to be HDR also, which will almost always have artifacts. Try normal shooting mode, with a lower iso and see what you get.
The only one that looked overly grainy to me was the clouds. And thats because your ISO is too high, or its an HDR - which all of the looked to be.
Read up on how HDR works and why the images can look really cool, but also what downfalls of it are. HDR is not meant for everyday shooting.
Looks like rain is heading your way. Make sure you bring an umbrella.
Agreed. Manual ISO FTW! If you're in a good lit area then definitely set your ISO manually to 100 or 200. Sometimes auto will raise the ISO higher than it needs to be and will make your pictures look noisy like that. Good luck!
Anyone else notice that the camera (at least the one on my phone) isn't as good as they expected for indoor photos? I haven't taken a lot of photos indoors, but the ones that I have for the most part have not turned out. Out of focus or very grainy. Figured it would be a killer camera (better than the competitor with an Apple for a logo).
Very disappointing, specially that was one of the high points of the HTC EVO LTE phone.
Hopefully they can do something with software upgrades.
Thoughts and suggestions?????
If you leave default settings yes, don't use automatic and expect the picture to turn out perfect...
I am not a photographer, I do know what things to adjust (to a certain degree) and get decent indoor pictures (note that if you have crappy lighting, there's not much you can do to make the picture turn out good). Anyway, there's a thread with people that either are professional photographers or hobby photographers that can help you a lot more than me if you read through it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671858
While I agree that tweaking a camera will help tremendously, I disagree that you should have to do that to get a decent indoor shot. My old EVO took fine pictures indoors, as do most camera phones. Who has time to adjust settings before every photo? "Hold on, don't blow out the candles yet - I need to change my ISO setting real quick."
One of the perks of this phone was the quickness of the camera, both loading the app and the shutter speed. I see little benefit of this when I need to make constant adjustments to get a non-grainy indoor shot. I've been highly disappointed by this as well.
Now outdoor shots... That's a whole 'nuther ballgame! Terrific with no adjustments!
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Same deal with regular point and shoot or DSLR cameras. You CAN set it on auto and you WILL get a nice picture (btw my EVO takes decent pictures, even indoor) but it will have some grain to it, again you can't expect any less, especially with bad lighting. For example, if I shoot a picture in my room (my walls are like a dark tan color) I have poor lighting, enough to see decently but if I shoot a picture here, it will have a lot of grain. If I move to my kitchen with white walls and a bright white light, it's almost the same as if I'm taking the picture outside.
Environment matters, lighting matters, settings matter.
I get great indoor photos, even in the dark. Set on auto. My 3D took horrible pics, poor color quality, everything was drab, so I love this camera.
