GSM using Jokersax CM9 - Motorola Photon 4G

I will be doing some international travel soon with my Photon to countries where GSM is standard. I usually just buy some cheap unlocked GSM phone and get a chip to use when I'm in-country.
How does GSM in the Photon work? Is it unlocked and can I just put in a chip from an international carrier when I'm in another country? I'm using Jokersax CM9, is there configuration I need to do there to use the GSM network instead of CDMA when I'm abroad? From what I can tell all I need to do is use *#*# info #*#* and then set the radio to GSM and have the chip in. I'd really like a confirmation that it actually works from someone using this now with this ROM since I don't want to land in country and then figure out it didn't work. So any tips on tricks that need to be done or just a confirmation that's all it takes would be fantastic.
Also - I'm assuming domestic GSM doesn't work at all, correct? As in, if I went and bought a prepaid GSM card from AT&T I can't just put it in, switch to GSM and go, right?

I am living in Israel and using the Photon (with cm9 0.6.1) on a gsm network. it works awesome!
just put your sim card and start having fun

HTC ThunderBolt locked

Hi,
I have bough one HTC ThunderBolt Verizon in America,
I tried to insert my sim card without success, can I unlock it? or is it impossible at this moment?
BR
Zax
this post was a fail
the sim card in the phone is meant only for the 4g. the phone is only cdma, not gsm. you can't put the card in there and assume it's going to work.
The Thunderbolt isn't a GSM phone. It uses a sim card only on Verzion for 4G purposes. I doubt it would be useful to do any unlocks on it.
I think this thread is a fail.
I'm nearly certain that as of right now, the Thunderbolt will work on no other carrier but Verizon. MetroPCS flashing isn't really possible since the phone uses some of the new technology to activate itself, the old activation code doesn't work, I believe. And the voice technology is still CDMA, so even if the Verizon bands match up to a Euro/Canada carrier in the future, you'll have to wait for LTE to carry voice, which could still be quite some time.
My sim is 3g, and my operator are gsm/umts but 3G not 4G.
I cannot to use it? If I understand well it works only with operator 4G?
Thanks a lot
Z.
There is a solution to put it on metro and cricket.
Wow, how did you even find xda?

[Q] Has anyone tried to use SIM adapter to unlock the phone for ATT and Tmobile?

Some SIM adapter can hack the carrier information and make the phone believe that it is on another different network. Has anyone tried so far?
Can anyone confirm this?
I did look on amazon and found two (adapters) you place under the sim card.
I do not know if these two products really work, and you have to cut your sim in order for to fit. I would love to use my photon on tmobile.
Just search "isim" or "smartsim" on amazon. Those are the only two I found.
I just bought one from dealextreme for $3.48 with free shipping. Now I have my fingers crossed. Hope it will work.
If I am not mistaken this will SIM unlock your phone but not bypass the US GSM radio lock on the phone. To unlock the US GSM radio bands someone would have to rewrite the radio's like they did on the HTC TP2.
since the source code has been released, would it be possible now to rewrite the frequencies for domestic use?
I am still curious about the sim unlock if it will work.
For unblocked us gsm may need the atrix radio rom

It's not a sim lock issue.
Some users have been digging into the phone via Radiocomm have actually discovered what appears to be carrier suppression code. Seeing how that it's a Radio issue vs a Android issue.... I'm not convinced this one will be cracked easily as I do not believe carriers or manufacturers are compelled to release Radio code
Just received it. The SIM unlock adapter didn't work for AT&T at least... Sad...

Can I use the GSM outside US?
I mean is it locked to other GSM carriers except att and tmo?
It's not locked at all. Only us gsm towers are blocked. Eg: you could use an att sim just fine if you were roaming in Canada.

The phone is unlocked for roaming outside the us and works fine. i just returned from jamaica friday where my photon worked fine on their claro network. for internet you may need to manually set the settings but the phone worked great.

[Q] World phone capability

If the qualdcom processor on the EVO is ment to support LTE which in turn uses a sim card shouldn't that make the phone a world phone I know it is suppose to have an embeded sim. But my true question is will we be able to reporgram the sim once we get root or will write have to go with more of a hardware mod if we wish to make it a world phone.

Sprint uses embedded LTE technology to my knowledge, so its not like on Verizon where there is an LTE sim card. Also, this phone is a CDMA phone, and therefore does not have a regular sim card slot (Like phones on ATT or TMo). No software modifications will change this, and I highly doubt that anyone could even attempt to make a hardware modification to make this phone a world phone. Also, and LTE sim card is not the same as a regular sim card, as they perform different actions (access to LTE and the rest of the network is seperate).
Yeah I was thinking that it does not have the slot the thing is that the processor does support gsm also I was kinda hopeing it was like the rezound it is cdma phone on Verizon. It was found out that just by removing verizons LTE sim card and adding a gsm one it allowed the phone to work as a gsm phone.
the evo lte does not have the GSM and HSPA+ radios to be a world phone
When I preordered, the rep told me it was a world phone. I didn't think she was right but I didn't say anything.
Yeah i read the same post on Engadget i think. What a bummer was hopping it was since it is rocking the same processor that the at&t one (correct me if im wrong). Plus like i also stated was hopping it was like the HTC rezound on Verizon that with a experiment it ended up working. O well .... still kinda wanna take it apart and try wouldn't be xda without some experimenting or moding.
My friend has a Droid bionic which wasn't supposed to have GSM support, but it did through some hacks on rootzwiki and using a T-Mobile sim card. I think that the s4 includes a GSM radio, so its probably possible at least if the sim card can be accessed. Lte is GSM based so it is likely that GSM support is there if software is modified like it was on the bionic.

Sure, you can use it anywhere in the world that has a compatible CDMA network.
Many identify world phone with GSM radios (which the Evo 4G LTE does not have), but CDMA (which it does have) does work well for roaming in Asia.
I've roamed with my Evo 4G across Japan, Korea, and China for both voice and data. There's a full list of countries with CDMA roaming on the Sprint website. As soon as you arrive in country (if roaming works), you receive a free text with the rates and instructions on how to make international calls.

Rezound in Israel

So i am going to Israel this summer for a few weeks and am hoping to bring my rezound now that Joelz has worked out all the GSM bugs. I am totally lost as this is my first "Global" phone so any help on what i need to do would be appreciated
From what i understand i need to call VZW, and get it unlocked and order a GSM sim card from a provider in Israel. Any suggestions on how i should go about doing either of these? (like a provider that i can order a sim)
Thanks

Nope it is already unlocked. Just swap your lte sim with a local one and use the app lte onoff to toggle to wcdma or gsm depending which works better with your overseas carrier.

CDMA Drazr and GSM network

Hi,
I live overseas and my network uses GSM 800/900/1900/2100 and UMTS 850/1900 (sams as AT&T)
All Verizon Razr come with SIM slot?
Are they UMTS 850/1900 compatible? Will I get 3G and H data?
What about Razr MAXX? Does it come with SIM slot?
I need to SIM unlock it or is it ready to put any micro SIM?
Hope you can enlighten me with this info.
Best Regards.

the cdma and gsm razr both have the same razr, with the cdma razr on ics you can use non U.S. sims no problem. so if you are oversea from the us you could get the branded cdma razr cheap, put it on ICS and use your sim. it should get 3g/H as my razr (gsm did with an at&t sim) so in global mode the cdma should
(don't take me a100% on this, but i am sure from what i read, but i am in the us. so i can't test it myself. maybe wait till someone else chimes in)
my questions is similar to this one if anyone could help..thanks

Thanks for your reply.
I am asking this (and so is my friend on the post above this one) because Verizon CDMA phones are always cheaper than GSM.... even cheaper if the have BAD ESN...
So, every Motorola RAZR have micro SIM Slot? Are they unlocked or I need to buy the code? Do you remember the Droid 2 Global? Those had SIM slot's but some of them had they unlock code changed and were IMPOSSIBLE to unlock... hope this is not the case with the RAZR.

from what i've read on the forums you need to either put the verizon razr on ice cream sadwhich (4.0.4) or use the hack to enable global mode in gingerbread (2.3.x)
so no unlock code. and yes, the verizon razr uses the micro sim for 4g lte sim

i have the gsm version (xt910, sorry i wasn't as clear about that as i thought, i said gsm, should've put xt910)
the xt910 has the cdma disabled and the xt912 has american gsm blocked.
and I've seen a few people claiming they flashed an xt910 to a cdma network like metro (it does have the radio, and couldn't the flashing program give them the esn/ect?
but i use it on simple mobile (so only edge for me. i might go to t-mobiles $50 plan if the non throttled edge is faster)
