google maps using a lot of my battery - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

This is the second day in a row google maps is the top app user of battery (behind screen of course).... the kicker is I have never even opened the app! Overall the battery life is still very good, but I don't get why maps is using my battery if I never use the app... I did open it up to see if I could force it to close, but I didn't see anything. Anyone else have this issue? I have the phone on wifi most of the day if that matters.

I noticed that too. Be sure you're signed out of the latitude layer. Also consider disabling geo tagging in the camera app settings...

Holy cow, there are a bunch of settings to turn off in maps. Who knew? Been noticing maps using battery also, but it didn't occur to me to go into its menu and look around.

i was curious about that.. the only thing i could think of was its the gps from the weather widget and it was labeled as maps instead of gps

that might be it, I signed out of lattitude and fixed the setting so it so it didn't update my location. Thanks for the tip, hope that fixes it

You should be able to report the app from the battery usage screen. Tap Google maps and report should be on the top right.
I do that whenever one of my app is misbehaving. It will help the devs fix the bug.

Mine was super dead and wouldn't even turn on when Received mine, I let it charge all night and unplugged it this morning and am down to 64% after 3 hours and 30 minutes of heavy use. I notice that it also was at 92% when I unplugged it so far better than the 3d but we shall see after a weeks worth of use or so.

I just did this, for a while I had location detection off.... but I like to be able to google search a business or place and have it show me the nearest locations of that business.... and that doesn't work if you turn off location detection... not to mention the weather lock screen doesn't work.... so right now my only solution is to leave the location detection on and live with maps eating my batter in the background.... I'm waiting a few more months to let the various dev created roms mature a bit before I try something other than stock sense

This happened to me several days in a row I don't use latitude and I reported it...I'm confused to be honest.

I am having the same issue and I am curious if you fixed it. I have Sony Xperia Twith ICS but I guess this is not related to the mobile. What settings are needed to stop this high battery consumption?
Thanks,

If you use ROM toolbox, you can go to auto-starts and disable all the receivers for Google maps (or most of them, you choose which specific receivers). I think there are like 16 different receivers.

+1...I have every start up event disabled for Maps in autostarts (available in play store) and it doesn't start unless I launch it myself. You could freeze it with titanium backup also, but then you'll need to defrost whenever you wanna use it which can be annoying.

Things id like to change

Maybe there are fixes for my issues. As I am new to android I'm not sure how to get them corrected. Here's a list. Maybe someone can land a hand.
How to keep screen on while on a charger.
How to make the GPS turn on and off when app starts and finishes.
How to set so it can detect a known wifi source, then activate wifi.
How to get the long lasting battery results everyone seems to be getting.
How to set the email app to open to the emails versus the screen to select which account to view as I have multiple accounts set up.
How to keep the lockscreen front turning off 3 seconds after I hit the wake button but not swiping to unlock.
That's about it for now. I come from an iphone ecosystem and am used to a few features my JB iphone provides. I'm sure ill have more "how to" questions.

There's an amazing app called Tasker that will do a lot of your wish list. It's all about contexts - e.g. "on external power" "App {x} is in the foreground." It's the best ~$6 you'll ever spend, and never want to have another phone with out it. Almost all of it's awesome functions work without root, too.

As to you wanting the lockscreen to stay on longer, there are several lockscreen replacements you could use. I'm not sure which ones have the option besides widgetlocker though. With widgetlocker, you can set the lockscreen timeout to various durations. I know it worked on my infuse, not sure about the note though.
The downside is that it costs a couple bucks and it will drain your battery a bit if I remember correctly because it keeps the device in a wakelock and does not allow deep sleep. Its not a huge battery drain, but it does some. However, if the timeout is more important than a tiny amount of battery drain, I suggest doing that.

Weather Widget

Is anyone elses weather widget not updating correctly? I go to a differnt city an hour away for work and it never changes to that city! And I have it set to my location. I even click refresh a thousand times and it doesnt change. The only thing that changes it is rebooting the device. Also sometimes it just says My Current Location.
What is your device? Probably you will need WiFi/mobile network to update your location.

EDIT....Now i dont know if its because i just woke up (But damn it felt good to sleep 2 extra hours, TIme to go golfing in Beverly at 11. Im not sure if that what your talking about. I just checked my Setting inside the Weather app, and i was surprised to see that there was no check underneath "my current location"....Is that checked off for you?
Ha! What's up man. Ya I have all that checked! I get that time pop up too. My weather widget app always shows that that the current weather is thunderstorms, regardless of where I am. I have to open it up and it'll refresh to sunny or cloudy. Then if I don't use by phone for a bit it'll go back to thunderstorms. I just checked and I didn't have currently location checked so that'll hopefully fix my issue.

Google Now vs Voice Search

Aren't google now and voice search two different things. the voice search feature of google now is only one aspect of it. Am I correct?
Google now includes cards and the voice search in Google now can respond to your questions.
Cards are just small amounts of common useful information that your phone thinks you need, like weather, sports scores, traffic info etc. Google now also learns based on your location and searches.
Sent from my HTC Ruby using xda app-developers app
Google now also updates you on the weather, news, navigation info and a lot more based on your google searches and personal settings.

When you voice search, it gives more relevant information- like the exact answer, rather than just a web search. It isn't perfect, but much better, and the number of commands you can give it are better.
The biggest change is when you click the actual "google" app in the app drawer.. this is where it pulls up cards based on what you search and use. For example, I searched on my pc for a UPS store, or on my phone with google now voice search, and nothing changes on my phone.. but when it detects that I am not moving a notification will pop up in my bar that shows the distance, time, traffic to that UPS store, without me doing anything. Click the notification and it opens the now card where it gives better detail, and actually has a clickable navigation link to start gps..

Does it do news? Besides it occasionally giving me navigation information, all I ever see is weather.. since i don't use sports, stocks, or all the other things it seems to offer. But news- I could use news.. I am curious.
The main thing that blows my mind about google now is that I have NO noticable drain- I thought this would drain battery like a mofo, but nope.. not that I can tell at all.

It's a background process like the regular google search so no additional power is used since it goes into the background dormant until needed again or scheduled to come up. On the news factor, yup it does, check your card samples, you can set it to show up whenever and how frequently you'd like. I just use mine for weather mostly, shows up whenever I leave home to guide me back too, lol.

[Q] Do more widgets cause higher battery drain?

I'm trying to work on and figure out why my battery life on any version of Rage rom is so terrible compared to everyone else. Clearly it's not the rom, so it must be stuff i'm running.
The biggest culprits I always see on my gsam reports is apex launcher and Android System. But I can't understand what apex launcher is doing that its responsible for 30% of my application's battery usage
I've posted a few times in the Rage thread, but haven't had any responses there, so decided I'll check here
Yes they can.

depends on the wiglets and how often the update. stuff like one for music that isnt being used wont take up to much battery but something like system info that updates every 5 sec will

that's what i thought too.. i have a tasks widgets, calendar, and weather. the weather updates every 4, calendar every 6, and tasks i can't set any intervals. but widgets were the only thing i could think of that would be casuing apex to be using so much battery
Do you have location enabled for the weather widget? Ive always found weather and location type widgets to be very power hungry.

yes i do. but if its only updating every 4 hours, that shouldn't be too bad i'd imagine.
Yeah but locations is running non stop. Do a little experiment, disable all locations services and freeze Google maps and HTC locations picker and things like that.
Facebook apps and widgets are really hard on battery life but I don't remember seeing that mentioned.

yeah i don't use facebook.
by locations, you mean gps? because i do have that disabled. only turn it on when using nav. only thing i leave on is the google location services. but that's never come up anywhere near the top in betterbatterystats so i doubt that's an issue.

Lol, wiglets.

HTC weather widgets

Does anyone have an issue with the location service on this phone? I seems like the only city it will display is New York anymore. No matter where I go all I get is "current location" even with every form of location service turned on.
I would use a 3rd party app as they work fine for my location but they lag on keeping time.
Very frustrating.
hah, man i ALWAYS had this issue with HTC stuff. started on the OG Inc. i honestly think it's accuweather, which is the widget provider. i had current location the other day, when no other GPS app had an issue. i ran a GPS tester, and it locked on in like 3 seconds and was accurate to 10 feet. pretty damn good. i think it's just how bad accuweather is...it can be a blizzard outside but accuweather will just say "cloudy." i've reported this NUMEROUS times to them how their current weather is 100% wrong, and they just say "sorry." and that there's nothing they can do..like seriously? accuweather is garbage. i remember asking dev's back in the Inc days if there was a way to poll from antoher weawther service in that and they all said no..oh well
damnit, go figure. today mines showing currnet location and will not pickup my town! stupid accuweather.com
funny thing is that it seemed to show current location once i got to work, which was in a building that had reception, too...and now even home, it won't show my town..odd.

Anyone find a resolution to this "current location" issue? My phone's weather has had "current location" for over a week now. I didn't have the issue when I first got the phone, so I don't know if it was a setting or if something has changed with Accuweather. I can understand it not finding the city I live in, but I work in a city with a metro population close to 3 million people.

I have the same issue where in the city would remain as current location and to have the issue fixed , i had to go to the Settings > APP and find the weather app and then clear the cache and Clear Defaults . I hope this might help although this is not the actual fix just a work around.
i'm pretty sure its accuweather and how it's reporting your location with the weather app on sense..
if you use beautiful widgets or one of those and use accuweather, the town usually comes up. i think its something between sense weather and accuweather. been going on since like sense 1.0..so annoying
Go into the settings for the widget and set the city. Also delete NY. Should take care if it. I have no issues as I move around during the day.
Go to settings > Locations > and just select google location services, uncheck all the other boxes. Works for me. If you select more than one service it seems to confuse the issue.
Removing all except Google locations and performing a reboot (with fast boot unchecked) solved it for me. It is now showing the cities. Pet peeve eliminated. Thank you.

This issue is so strange to me. I've been using the default HTC weather widget for months now and I have never had an issue.
Now for about a week now, it just says "current location" and the weather info is inaccurate. I've made no significant changes and I have tried every suggested fix with no luck (check/un-checking options in location settings - reinstalling weather app - clearing cache - etc, etc, etc).
This is beyond frustrating. Thinking of calling Verizon support tonight, but doubtful that will accomplish anything.
Is this DNA specific? I've read a lot about this issue on DNA's only.
Sigh.

Just walked into a Verizon store to explain the problem.
Their response..... "Hmmm, I'm not really sure, that's weird. I would suggest using a different weather widget"
Are you kidding me?

What did you expect them to say. Most of them probably haven't touched a DNA for more than 5 minutes. They are Verizon employees, not HTC employees.

I expect them to help me with a product they sell. Ya know, something called customer service? Don't sell a product if you can't offer support for it

You expected the low paid employees at your local vzw store to know how to fix every fringe issue about every device they sell.
You are more knowledgeable about the DNA than they are, and that is to be expected. If you want customer support, call customer support.

Fixed it on mine by doing a factory reset and then going to location and unchecked Verizon location services..Also in network settings put it in lte cdma mode and in roaming alow access for all trips. Hope this helps.

This happens from time to time with mine. To fix it I go into settings>apps>all>weather ... Clear cache, reboot and all is better.

Its a pain, happens often enough here. It usually straightens itself out though. Had the same issue on my Incredible 2.

All my locations seem to work fine, except Google Now says location is not on but it shows weather. I hasn't given me traffic for my calendar or seem to let me add those cards, it's not working right. I have 2 locations in settings for Google and then the phone and VZW's. Usually I remember seeing 3 not 4 in my other phones.
