[Q] Do more widgets cause higher battery drain? - HTC Rezound

I'm trying to work on and figure out why my battery life on any version of Rage rom is so terrible compared to everyone else. Clearly it's not the rom, so it must be stuff i'm running.
The biggest culprits I always see on my gsam reports is apex launcher and Android System. But I can't understand what apex launcher is doing that its responsible for 30% of my application's battery usage
I've posted a few times in the Rage thread, but haven't had any responses there, so decided I'll check here

Yes they can.

that's what i thought too.. i have a tasks widgets, calendar, and weather. the weather updates every 4, calendar every 6, and tasks i can't set any intervals. but widgets were the only thing i could think of that would be casuing apex to be using so much battery

Do you have location enabled for the weather widget? Ive always found weather and location type widgets to be very power hungry.

yes i do. but if its only updating every 4 hours, that shouldn't be too bad i'd imagine.

Yeah but locations is running non stop. Do a little experiment, disable all locations services and freeze Google maps and HTC locations picker and things like that.
Facebook apps and widgets are really hard on battery life but I don't remember seeing that mentioned.

by locations, you mean gps? because i do have that disabled. only turn it on when using nav. only thing i leave on is the google location services. but that's never come up anywhere near the top in betterbatterystats so i doubt that's an issue.

BEST WAY TO SAVE YOUR ANDROID BATTERY! legit!

okay so what you wanna do is go to settings, then go to accounts & sync then uncheck background data! It wont affect anything but the market so when you wanna download stuff you just have to turn it back on then off. This will increase your battery 100 percent no lie! It made my phone amazing.
Also good if you do not want to receive any emails or notifications of any sort...
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
I just have a 3G switch in my notification bar so I can turn it off/on quickly when I want, and doing so saves my battery countless hours of life. I turned my phone on 7 hours ago and I've only had 3G turned on once for some quick browsing and resyncing my contacts with Facebook, and I'm still at 90% battery (and I've done a fair amount of messaging today and made two phone calls)
How do you put that in your Notification bar? I'd really like to be able to do this that easily.

There is an app in the market called widgetsoid that can do it. Or you can flash a CM rom. They all can do it natively. There's other ways but these are just a couple that can get you started.

Well, I often change my Google cal on the web on a desktop PC (or in iCal on my Mac) - much easier - and I wouldn't get gmail with background data turned off. So, it does affect more than the market, actually.

Using MacROM and smartass governer, turning off BT/WiFi and GPS, I was able to get 2.5 days of battery out of mine on a recent weekend camping trip. Unless I'm on the phone or REALLY texting a lot, I can make it from 7am to midnight and still be on >25%. The ROM can make a HUGE difference!
Kind of the same as turning the phone off... the battery will last a week with it off.
Isn't that amazing? It could probably even last twice as long with it turned off. Good luck getting any notifications, though. Of course, there are some days that it would be nice to have it turned off.

adjust all your settings first, if you haven't already, such as background data, GPS, location, all that stuff. run it very conservative and see if there is a change.
if you are running all the widgets that update automatically, weather, friend stream, etc etc etc... or even task killers, set CPU, crap that uses up CPU cycles... well you should have this figured out already..

If i dont have always mobile data ON or Wifi, if I stop using the widgets who need sync, if i stop use a lot of things, if i dont use the live wallpapers as background why not to buy a Nokia phone then?.
I think that the major problem of all the android phones is the battery life. It sucks.
Adjust settings as the post above. Download senseless ROM from scroler and battery issue issue will be a thing of the past. Of course you will have to follow the suggestions to implement it. My biggest improvement in battery life was when I turned off background notifications in accounts sync in settings. For 2.3.3 roms...vipers ROM is the best.

There is no reason. But there is also no reason to expect good battery life, either. If
you haven't noticed, battery technology hasn't improved to the extent that we all would
love to see. It sucks, but its true. Once they improve, so will battery life.

I had similar issues with the official Facebook app. I use Advanced Task Killer (ATK) which is a free download from Market. You can set it to auto-kill apps at regular intervals (in my case, every hour). So the FB app gets killed every now and then, saving whatever battery can be saved..

ATK'ers cause more problems than they help, as every time something is killed, the phone wakes up, kills something, then the app has to be reloaded.
Its highly recommended not to use them.

Maybe pre gingerbread, but as far as I know 2.3.x has always had a LMK (low memory killer) built in, so it does the same thing as a ATK, but its "smart" and doesn't hurt the battery like a ATK does.
I kno this is a super bump but this is the closest thread i could find to my issue...
After facebook recently updating the app i noticed, in the stock application manager on my LG P930, it using about 58% and even spikeing up to 88% CPU usage and using over 40.0 MBs of my RAM i have to stop the app in the application manager for it to stop....
Heres a pic for proof i guess:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1035642&stc=1&d=1335922294
So my actual question is can this harm the hardware to my phone if i dont stop it running after every use? And is there maybe a fix to get it to stop using so much?
i got fb on both sgs1 an sgs2 yes many say it consumes power but y dosnt mine do tht its loggd in 24hrs........cheerz
Facebook for Android sucks really.. I noticed this whole CPU trashing started when they upgraded Facebook some time ago to what is the "current" skin for the past 4-5 months or so. Suddenly, everytime I launch Facebook, when I go back to my home screen it stays running...
Obviously I have the notifications and synch refresh set to never..
Watchdog complains about it...
Connecting via ADB and issuing top shows the katana process eating 20% cpu or more..
Using a terminal app on the phone and issuing top reveals the same thing...
So I just use Watchdog to kill Facebook everytime I'm done using it, or I use the sluggish browser version that doesn't suffer from this cause it runs in the browser
Upgrade after upgrade they can't seem to fix this and it's symptomatic.. not random! At least not on my Nexus S running the latest ICS 4.0.4.
Would be interesting if via ADB we could check the threads of the facebook process and see what's running...
What would be even better would be some sort of channel to complain about this to Facebook.. I mentioned this in my review on the Play store but I don't think anyone cares about what's written there (at least none from the Facebook development team..)

Things id like to change

Maybe there are fixes for my issues. As I am new to android I'm not sure how to get them corrected. Here's a list. Maybe someone can land a hand.
How to keep screen on while on a charger.
How to make the GPS turn on and off when app starts and finishes.
How to set so it can detect a known wifi source, then activate wifi.
How to get the long lasting battery results everyone seems to be getting.
How to set the email app to open to the emails versus the screen to select which account to view as I have multiple accounts set up.
How to keep the lockscreen front turning off 3 seconds after I hit the wake button but not swiping to unlock.
That's about it for now. I come from an iphone ecosystem and am used to a few features my JB iphone provides. I'm sure ill have more "how to" questions.

There's an amazing app called Tasker that will do a lot of your wish list. It's all about contexts - e.g. "on external power" "App {x} is in the foreground." It's the best ~$6 you'll ever spend, and never want to have another phone with out it. Almost all of it's awesome functions work without root, too.

How to keep screen on while on a charger.
>It can be done, there are apps to do it, depending on what you want your screen to display. For instance, on my old phone I used "Gentle Alarm" to display a digital clock image while in a hotel or something. However the screen on this phone is apparently prone to having images burn in...
How to make the GPS turn on and off when app starts and finishes.
>Android only turns it on when something is using it, so if you see that little icon on a lot of the time there may be something running in the background that you might not intend. This may also be the cause of your battery drain. Press and hold the home button (you will see your recently launched tasks) and hit task manager. You can then clear many unnecessary tasks that may be running in the background. If you don't see the obvious culprit there, you may have to dig deeper...
How to set so it can detect a known wifi source, then activate wifi.
>This is a funny question if you think about it, because how could it detect a known wifi source without wifi on? I use Tasker, too. You can easily make a profile while connected to your wifi check for "state: wifi near (toggle wifi), turn wifi on. You can set it to run when you unlock your screen, for instance. You can also set it up to turn on your screen based on location, but remember that if you use GPS too much...
Tasker is fun to play with anyway.
How to get the long lasting battery results everyone seems to be getting.
>You can try an app called Juice Defender, or similar. It has many battery saving features, including the ability to turn on wifi only when available. Its another fun app to play with, but most people here would agree that you should stay away from task killers.
How to set the email app to open to the emails versus the screen to select which account to view as I have multiple accounts set up.
>I have never had multiple emails with the same app, but I always assumed that that is how it worked...
How to keep the lockscreen front turning off 3 seconds after I hit the wake button but not swiping to unlock.
>No idea, but there are apps to disable the lockscreen if you want. I'm sure you can change the setting somehow, but probably at the root level. Search XDA...

>Easiest way to do stuff is just to keep searching the Market to see if somebody has made an app to do it (Android Market is your friend). Once you get more advanced you can try to do it yourself (then XDA is your friend). I have played with my wife's iPhone, and you will appreciate that the Market has apps that can do MUCH more cool stuff, and the vast majority are free because they were made by enthusiasts. The rest are usually reasonably priced. Once you root your phone there are many more options.

As to you wanting the lockscreen to stay on longer, there are several lockscreen replacements you could use. I'm not sure which ones have the option besides widgetlocker though. With widgetlocker, you can set the lockscreen timeout to various durations. I know it worked on my infuse, not sure about the note though.
The downside is that it costs a couple bucks and it will drain your battery a bit if I remember correctly because it keeps the device in a wakelock and does not allow deep sleep. Its not a huge battery drain, but it does some. However, if the timeout is more important than a tiny amount of battery drain, I suggest doing that.

I have noticed an improvement using JD and that's actual not placebo. I get your point though on an app that runs to save battery. But whatever its doing, its working better than whatever I'm doing without it.

I bought it when I was on eclair... it made a difference there... though not much
However froyo up... android does a better job on its own...

That's about it for now. I come from an iphone ecosystem and am used to a few features my JB iphone provides. I'm sure ill have more "how to" questions.
These phones quickly become a full time hobby. I hardly ever play games anymore, I just spend my free time tinkering...

google maps using a lot of my battery

This is the second day in a row google maps is the top app user of battery (behind screen of course).... the kicker is I have never even opened the app! Overall the battery life is still very good, but I don't get why maps is using my battery if I never use the app... I did open it up to see if I could force it to close, but I didn't see anything. Anyone else have this issue? I have the phone on wifi most of the day if that matters.
I noticed that too. Be sure you're signed out of the latitude layer. Also consider disabling geo tagging in the camera app settings...
Holy cow, there are a bunch of settings to turn off in maps. Who knew? Been noticing maps using battery also, but it didn't occur to me to go into its menu and look around.
i was curious about that.. the only thing i could think of was its the gps from the weather widget and it was labeled as maps instead of gps

that might be it, I signed out of lattitude and fixed the setting so it so it didn't update my location. Thanks for the tip, hope that fixes it
You should be able to report the app from the battery usage screen. Tap Google maps and report should be on the top right.
I do that whenever one of my app is misbehaving. It will help the devs fix the bug.

Mine was super dead and wouldn't even turn on when Received mine, I let it charge all night and unplugged it this morning and am down to 64% after 3 hours and 30 minutes of heavy use. I notice that it also was at 92% when I unplugged it so far better than the 3d but we shall see after a weeks worth of use or so.

I just did this, for a while I had location detection off.... but I like to be able to google search a business or place and have it show me the nearest locations of that business.... and that doesn't work if you turn off location detection... not to mention the weather lock screen doesn't work.... so right now my only solution is to leave the location detection on and live with maps eating my batter in the background.... I'm waiting a few more months to let the various dev created roms mature a bit before I try something other than stock sense
This happened to me several days in a row I don't use latitude and I reported it...I'm confused to be honest.

I am having the same issue and I am curious if you fixed it. I have Sony Xperia Twith ICS but I guess this is not related to the mobile. What settings are needed to stop this high battery consumption?
Thanks,

If you use ROM toolbox, you can go to auto-starts and disable all the receivers for Google maps (or most of them, you choose which specific receivers). I think there are like 16 different receivers.

+1...I have every start up event disabled for Maps in autostarts (available in play store) and it doesn't start unless I launch it myself. You could freeze it with titanium backup also, but then you'll need to defrost whenever you wanna use it which can be annoying.
