Looked at my phone today and saw this in the corner. Wasn't really sure what or why it happened, so I restarted to fix it.

You're talking about the numbers in the left corner? I don't know but I have seen it briefly randomly since getting my phone...I would imagine its some sort of tower id number or something. I'm just guessing I have no idea usually it flashes for a second or two then goes back to saying at&t.

ok thanks!
So is there any reason that it randomly appears? I've saw it a few times too.
Mine displays those numbers when I briefly lose and regain service.
Those are the numbers in the APN, referring to AT &T's network.
Sent from my new Note. Damn this thing is BIG!
I got those occasionally when I go to one specific area at work. I'll lose signal for a minute get those numbers then it comes back. I'd assumed it was switching towers or something. Glad to know what it really is.

As djbrian said that's your carrier id and should normally show up as AT&T instead of 310410. Not sure why it would pop up with raw numbers but definitely nothing outta the ordinary

this " numbers" got me curious...
Normaly THAT NUMBER = APN , and is usually resolved in PICTURE.
In case your want to email - forward via email etc to someone else so it starts a background Shell/Semaphore. This Shell/Sem* is generally for EMAIL process. (first seen in iphone3g looooong time ago so nothing new!!) However in IPHONE iOS they resolve it to NETWORK NAME ( from settings ) here in Driod world seems they are picking "network id"
What got me curious = was how it 'now' SHOWS UP on the screen capture....
Generally all MATADATA - tags locations etc , dont show up and are 'masked' out ..
That why there was lots of Bhoohhaahhaa about the "location" of picture showing in screen on Iphones etc and now they are STILL THERE - juz MASKED OUT from 'display"
sorry for making this complex info.............. in short nothing much to worry about or get nervious of ,,,,,,,,,,, and if your partner is clueless like mine ,,, all sweet as !

One more piece of trivia, 310-410 used to be Cingular's carrier ID. AT&T's was 310-380. Once they took over Cingular they gradually changed their ID over to Cingular's area by area. Not sure why.

It's because AT&T cellular was bought by Cingular, which was a joint venture between SBC and Bellsouth.
SBC then bought the entirety of AT&T and rebranded as AT&T (this is why the logo changed as well). The common misconception is that SBC was bought by AT&T but at that point AT&T was a shell of itself.
Then the "new" AT&T bought Bellsouth at this point holding both halves of the joint venture and subsequently re-branded Cingular as AT&T.
uh 310410 is the IMSI range not the APN.

I've been using an x10i on at&t and thinking of changing to an x10a so I can get 3g access. the problem I have is that I've been using the 15$/month unlimited for non smartphones. I know someone with an x10a that had att detect that they used a smartphone, I think it was because it used hspa. I'm wondering, does anyone know how at&t detects non smartphones?
They know what kind of phone you have whether its a dumbphone or smartphone from its IMEI number.
All AT&T phones have their IMEI numbers registered in their database.
Phones that are NOT AT&T phones they are unable to find out what kind of phone it is because the IMEI isn't in their database unless the manufacturer for some reason decides to send them then IMEIs for all their non AT&T devices. Google did this with the first couple of Nexus One runs. That's why some N1s would register on AT&T and some wouldn't. Bastards...........
Find a non AT&T X10a (Does Telus or Rogers have the X10 ?) and you should be golden.
Unless S/E gave AT&T a listing of their IMEIs for non AT&T variants for some odd reason............
I can tell you how to edit the international mobile electronic identification number on your x10.. I can remember the exact path to it since my x10 is dead/bricked/ibrokeithalfafter it happened anyways,I guess pm me if you want it and when my father arrives back from his place of employment I will give you the path to freedom.. all you need is one cmd from the big blue term emul. (echo $value >/path/I/will/provide/asap I believe its illegal but idgaf , when mine showed up0000000000000 I was kinda scared due to the fact I could **** up my phone.. also ATT knows its a smartphone due to the fact that your tunneling through their work using an APN.. they called me actually rofl when I lost my sim.. took over my little bros sim card due to the fact that to get a new one you have to send them the 15 digit number and my sticker got ****ed on the phone.. but they actually left me 2 messages sounded like a sophisticated african american that said Did you know that your smartphone requires a data plan lilbro had no data lmao then sent a text too and then charged me for ****ing two 2GB data plans... lmao their ****ing assholes they could of just chosen the 4GB but anyways yeah ATT has their phones on lockdown.. unless you spend all your time trying to bypass ATTs rules all day and night like me.. I had Hspa before they released the ****.. I was locating towers in africa.. which blew my mind.. I didn't know ATT was over there.. I thought they just ****ed us, U.S. citizens over.. anyways pm me ill tell you a cpl ways to piss ATT off.. e.g. edit the apn setiings with their I.p addresses and use diff ports.. (download a pinger from the market then type in the url for their apn to access their ip addresses.. gd I miss my x10 att discontinued it I think btw)
edit:// btw why the **** would you want 3G instead of the big H... 3G can't even hit 700 kbps in my town which of course a map verifies theres not much 3G coverage in my town.. which is right by STL.... tmobile sounds like a quite accelerated network atm from present customers I've spoken too.. and US cellulars 3G is actually quite fast from what I've seen.. (their just releasing it in the saint louis metro east.. but my buddy can get evdo when he roams......lol?)

I know it's a little late, but I had the same plan you have when I was using the AT&T tilt and then the tilt2. I got the Tilt by upgrading my plan and found out later I had a "smartphone" exclusion on my account (that was when they weren't forcing people to upgrade to a smartphone plan). It basically meant I was allowed to have a smartphone on my account without having to get the smartphone plan. Now, I used that plan for a few years with the unlimited data before buying the Tilt2 and they never did anything. I bought the tilt2 on ebay and they still didn't do anything to my account while I was using that one. They do, however, state in their TOS that if they find you are using an "inappropriate" data plan for your device they can change your plan accordingly if they choose to. They never did on mine though. I didn't get the smartphone plan until I upgraded to the lg expo a while back, and had to get it to get the phone since it was through RadioShack. I was told I could have called and reverted it back, but I didn't get around to it and time ran out.
Like msgnyc said, they detect the phone based on the IMEI number. No sooner than you put your sim in your phone and sign in on the AT&T website, your new device will show up there. It's not like they instantly say "Woah! This person has a smartphone. We have to upgrade the data plan on the account right now!".
If you put your sim in a smartphone, as long as you don't go nuts on the data, you should be good sticking with the plan you have. (BTW l3as3ballel2 is a troll and I wouldn't listen to a thing this person posts)
Wao some of these things sound so illegal, like altering the serial no. (IMEI) of the phone to mimic detecting it like a non smartphone "awe"
Why go to such great extends to get in trouble even with law enforcement, just get an unlocked smartphone. I have a galaxy s2 and I'm hapily on the $15/mo Ulmt data plan but of course I had to lurchase the device at front.

So I have the US Galaxy S II variant which is an amazing phone but it's not the GS2 I fell for in February. I managed to flip (sell) my phone for a hefty price which is more than enough to buy the International version but in your opinion -- is it worth it?
I know the Nexus Prime, Razr, etc are being announced in 24 hours but I don't care -- for now. If I get the GS2 off or Amazon will it have NFC compatibility when it gains ground in the US? Is the home button really as flimsy as people make it out to be? All of your opinions are welcome.

Maybe because I've had the original Galaxy S and am not fond of the capacitive button layout, and I had numerous issues with the search button freaking out on the Captivate. The international version looks a lot better IMO, but lack of NFC is a drawback. The bad thing is someone already bought my At&t version.

There are a lot more differences than just the front mechanical button which everyone talks about.
#1: the i9100 has a built-in FM stereo RDS radio
#2: the i9100 has three front buttons one of which is mechanical
#3: the i9100 is factory unlocked (it was NEVER locked to start with)
#4: the i9100 has slightly thinner & smaller housing dimensions
#5: the i9100 weighs a few grams less
Here are the size/weight specs for each:
Samsung Galaxy SGH i777: Dimensions 126 x 66 x 8.9 mm Weight 121.9 g
Samsung Galaxy S II i9100: Dimensions 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm Weight 116 g
Most likely there are other slight differences which I have not yet investigated.
Check it out yourself at GSMARENA on their website.

There are only three things that are in any way advantageous in choosing the ASGS2 over the ISGS2:
1) Subsidized pricing
3) Warranty with overnight replacement from AT&T
3) The ability to buy insurance from AT&T in case its lost or stolen
You can say NFC's an advantage but everyone will probably be on their next phone by the time you'll be able to do anything meaningful with it.
What you give up: (note: a lot of these are meaningless if you root/ROM)
1) Updates directly from Samsung
2) 2 year vs. 1 year warranty
3) FM Radio
4) Features and settings removed by AT&T
5) Multi-purpose hardware home button
6) $10 unlimited fake-4G
The ISGS2 was my first non-subsidized phone. I'll never buy another carrier molested phone again. I travel overseas a lot so don't have the luxury to root/ROM because every device I've modified always had problems registering on foriegn networks.

None of the international versions have any warranty in US. You will have to deal with someone outside the US or the seller for any warranty work.
I'm in Bangkok all week w\ my SGSII (AT&T) and the thing that drives me absolutely INSANE is that AT&T blocks the ability to select which network you want to use. I have a local Thai SIM (DTAC), but I have to let the radio\ROM auto-select the network, which bugs the sh#$ out of me, because many countries have the ability to roam on several networks, and not being able to chose annoys me.
I was at the market today and they sell the SGSII International version for $516 USD, I think I may take the plunge. The US version doesn't nor never will have the number of accessories available as the international one does, so I think I'm good there, and I know I can sell my ATT version for $450-500, so likely I'll pick one up tomorrow. Good idea? For $516 it's a good price I think.

That's absolutely incorrect. You can NOT select network just by unlocking, that simply allows you to use the sim's default network. The manual network selection does NOT become usable after unlocking (I know from personal experience with the ATT SGSII AND the Infuse 4G). The only way to manual select on Infuse was to flash Rogers radio and install custom rom. Unfortunately no alternate radios are avail for i777 yet (if ever)

Of course you need to put a different sim chip into the phone if you want to
change service providors with an unlocked phone.
The advantage of a unlocked phone is just that, the ability to use different sim
chips from different service providors as long as they use the gsm networks.

I understand that. Tell ya what. Unlock your phone and pop in a t-mobile SIM and try to access the network selection screen. You CAN'T. I've been through this time and time again. AT&T LOCKS the menu. So unless you replace the radio AND install a custom ROM (ie on my Infuse I had Infused 2.3.3 and Rogers Radio), you CAN NOT even get into the manual network selection screen regardless of what sim you put into the phone.

You are right, getting into the manual network selection with a locked or
unlocked phone depends on which rom you are using, some roms let you
do that others don't. CyanogenMod 7 roms do have that feature and some
other custom roms have it too.
But changing the network selection settings is not a very good idea even
if we can do it.
But what's the point in getting into the network selection if lets say you have
an AT&T or T-mobile sim card? With an unlocked phone both of these two
sims will work fine without needing to change the network selection.
The unlocked phone will automatically detect the correct network settings
for any sim card which it's compatible with.

You don't travel much internationally, I see.
Yeah, if you are in Los Angeles with an AT&T sim it's likely going to find it's way onto the AT&T network, obviously. Try roaming across to Japan... you'll find that AT&T has roaming agreements with NTTdocomo, and SoftBank. NTTdocomo is great if you're sitting at Narita airport, but you may want to venture outside the airport, to say, downtown Tokyo, where Softbank dominates in coverage and reliability in parts of town. You can't switch because the ATT ROM\Radio will ALWAYS favor NTT, why? Because ATT likely has a more favorable roaming rate negotiated (ATT doesn't have customer experience first priority as you likely already know). Not being allowed manual selection means you take what ATT gives.
Now take an international SIM... say you go to Thailand, where I am this week. I go home with the SIM and I want to use it in the US. ATT's ROAMING list they force on me will allow me ONLY to use it on ATT... but wait, my SIM I bought here in Thailand doesn't roam with ATT, only T-Mobile... so I'm fu$#ed... see what I mean? If I had manual network selection, 2 clicks and I'd select t-mobile. To take that right away from a customer is 100% anti-customer, and demonstrates what a regional carrier ATT really is. The people who control these things don't leave their cubicle in Dallas, so they don't get it that someone might just want to not be screwed without phone service when they travel because the furthest the programmer geek has travelled is the $5 happy ending massage shop at the edge of town, lol

Just have to correct you on something, the $5 Happy ending places are NOT on the edge of Dallas, they are on Harry Hines near downtown... Not that I would know anything about that.
So, all of my family just signed up for AT&T from T-Mobile and most of us got Galaxy S II's from Amazon for $0.01 (good deal). However, my brother and I are both having data issues. We'll be connected to HSPA+ with 4/5 bars, but sometimes anything that requires data (webpage, email) won't load, an there will be minimal data activity in the status bar. I have to click links multiple times for a connection to finally occur (if not wait a minute). Other times, I've waited so long I've turned airport mode on and off. My brother tested his GSII next to someone's Atrix, and their Atrx loaded a webpage without any latency, while my brother's browser just sat there with the initial loading bar, no network activity.
I haven't done much testing/replacing the ROM/radio, because methinks the stock ROM shouldn't be having this problem in the first place. Can I check logcat w/o root?
Could this be a cellular issue? We ported our numbers from T-Mobile, and still have the T-Mobile account. I never had to activate my AT&T phone when I got it from Amazon (came with SIM card, worked out of box). I also noticed strange behavior. I had both my old T-Mobile phone and my new AT&T phone on at the same time, and my T-Mobile phone rang, even though I had supposedly ported my number to AT&T. So if that can happen maybe it's some crazy SIM issue going on?
Any advice or pointers of assistance from the GSII forum would be appreciable.
Thanks!
Sounds like the AT&T sim card is not activated, or fully activated. Id call them and verify. Also make sure that you are on a 4G data plan... that can also cause issues with data.
When you port a number it can take up to 48 hours to fully port the number. Until it is done both phones will ring. The reason for the bad satanist that even though it works out of box you have to call Att to set the account up the rest of the way. I can't tell you how many people came into my store due to this.

Update: Just took phone out of pocket and loaded cnn.com. Tooks ~20 seconds before page even started loading (beyond initial bit of browser loading bar). Both up/down HSPA+ became active at various points in the time frame.
This seems to be a common occurrence. I remember talking to an AT&T rep from Georgia or something because my dad called her to get our account in order. She called my phone, as was like "Oh you're talking on your GSII? -- it must already be activated then." She made no indication that it still needed to be activated.
Sorry damn keyboard. I ment bad data connection.
I used to run a small retailer but still do freelance support for a few of the Att stores around town. You would be amazed how many store managers have no idea about the products they sell lmao
Call Att and get tech support and have them refreash your connection to the data servers. That should fix you right up.

Not trying to cheat AT&T
I have an unlocked, rooted Atrix 4g that has reached the end. The wifi is not working and from what I have found apparently there is a battery inside there that dies or needs to be reset... I don't know. BUT rather than just toss it I would like to dumb it down. I don't want to leave it even picking up 3g, dumb it down to a "mobile web" only and allow my sister to use it. It doesn't matter what ROM it has, or what it really behaves like when I'm done. It would be cool if everything (camera and such) worked but if it never ventures off of 2g or ATT's "mobile web" that is perfect. But even if I find a rom that will turn it into a pretty prepaid phone ATT will see the IMIE and assume it's using it's full potential. Is there a way to dumb it down and make the imie number show something else. I don't want to get tossed from the forums so I will say once again that I do NOT want to steal service, I want the phone to only be a 2g phone anyway! Any suggestions would be awesome!
No way.
I understand what you are saying, but I believe this is illegal.
Yeah, changing IMEI is illegal in most countries, including yours. The only option I can think of right now is to SIM unlock it if necessary (try calling AT&T support, they might provide the unlock code if the phone meets certain conditions, that's how I unlocked mine) and then use it with some other carrier that doesn't care about IMEIs (Verizon? Sprint? dunno, I'm not american).
Straight talk would work.

Yep, I have it unlocked already. I guess I will try att. I just hate to throw the thing away because it doesn't pick up WiFi. I had it sold to a good home when that issue popped up.

Okay so I found a nice new phone come into my hands from a craiglist deal, popped in sim card, everything worked great. Sometime over night my device had been blocked from network use. I understand AT&T now can blacklist a phones IMEI phone and block any network access onto AT&T's gsm network. My sim would no longer work in my older phone, so I called and got that fixed, but I now have a stupid nice phone that im using for a paper weight. Obviously the person who sold it to me either knew it was reported lost or stolen, or reported it after selling it to me, its whatever it happens right. I dont want to go on craigslist and rip someone else off, thats not fair and would make me a ****ty person.
So I still have the phone, I know ill never be able to change IMEIs even with samsung tools12.7, and I know ill never see AT&Ts network work on the phone. Now, I understand that t-mobile is also on the gsm network, and I know that t-mobile has the highest block/blacklist capability of all cellphone carriers, that will even block an IMEI just for a late payment. But does AT&T share the same IMEI block list as T-mobile? Would I be able to just root my phone, and unlock it for Tmobile use, get a tmobile sim card and go from there? Or since theyre both gsm is my IMEI gonna blocked from all gsm networks.
I just need a way to put this phone to use, I spend good money on it and would like it to work. Even if that means switching cell phone companies and starting up a new "go phone" like plan. If anyone with any helpful tips or any useful information could just throw me some of their time with a reply I would be so grateful.

Report the buyer to ATT and they can unblock the phone if you can prove you bought it from someone.

It will operate on TMo, but except in a very few areas where TMo uses the same 3G bands as ATT, you will only get edge data speeds.
Edit: once it's unlocked it will operate on TMo.

OK so normal SMS, calling, general networking would still be the same? Just I would get edge data instead of the 4g or 3g?
please note the blacklist will soon be shared with all carriers

Yup, T-Mobile and AT&T will be sharing their IMEI blacklists soon so it will only work on T-Mobile for a month before they start blocking it, too.
You can either use it as something other than a phone or sell it on eBay to someone who doesn't want t use it as a phone.
Or track the buyer and report it to ATT. They will remove it if you can provide proof.
I just feel sorry for the poor guy who had their phone stolen.

If it was even stolen. I'm pretty sure they just sold it then reported it stolen so that they get cash and a free replacement from att.
