Does anyone know if there's an item like this that is cheaper but works more or less the same?
I was told it would help with wifi issues at range

Check out this TP-Link unit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704134
Absolutely tiny, and does 4 modes - client, AP, router and repeater. If you don't need a USB port for a 3G modem, this is a scorching hot deal.
And a UK link for you also.

Looks like an interesting little do-hickey. I shall have to do some reading.
thank you gentlemen i shall give it a try =]

Cool. I get so caught up with the big and bad, I forget to find the tiny and badass
Those are cool, I've never considered finding a tiny portable router to help create wireless networks on-the-spot with wired ones. Awesome.
One thing is not clear for me. I.e. when I'm on holiday, and want to use this with the tfp, do I need a PC or laptop to connect first with the wifi before I can use this? If so it's not very convenient ...

I ran speedtest in my usual spot of the house that id be using it. My router is in another room a few walls in between us.
I got 1.3 down, and 2.2 up (odd that up is faster, right?)
I don't really care what the numbers are as long as i can browse the web. But im wondering if any apps will be unusable with such low numbers?
Thanks
BTW is this much slower than you are all getting?

Lol it depends on your ISP. What do you get on your computer? Or other devices?

Wifi file transfers, downloads, app downloads, any streaming (YouTube, Google videos, etc) are where you see the wifi speed play a part.
TF201 | XDA Premium
So I understand the wifi issue gives a weak signal, but even RIGHT ON TOP of my router I can only pull 3-5 mbit/sec, whereas on my laptop I can pull 30+ mbit/sec
Is there anything I can do to make my Prime get better speeds when in range? The range isnt an issue so much as the speeds. Im trying to use WatchESPN on my home wifi and its choppy and slow =\

I didn't really notice the speed difference until today when I tried watching WatchESPN. I know people said changing the wifi channel can help, but I ran Wifi Analyzer and my channel is wide open at home, and I tried using it at work tethered to 4G and it looked like **** too, when my laptop looks fine.
Kind of bummed =\
Just check that link out. Really good info in there that might make it play better. People who had similar issues also switched to G only band n solved speed n range issues. Check out all possible options.

I have the Linksys WRT54G but just replaced it with the Linksys E4200 yesterday. With the WRT54G, I was able to get 15-16mbs down no problem when standing 7-8 feet away from the router above the basement where it was located.
Once I switched to the E4200, I'm now able to get 21-25mbs down from the same location...plus, my range has increased. In the farthest corner of my house, I can still muster 6-8mbs down.
One thing I did notice while tinkering around with both routers is that the type of security used definitely impacts download speeds. I swtiched to WPA2 and noticed a 4-5mbs increase which gave me the results posted above. This was not just important for my TFP but all of the wireless devices in my home including my PC.
That said, unless you have a wonky wifi radio in the TFP, you should certainly realize faster speeds than you're seeing.

Are you using old outdated WEP security? If so, switch to newer on like wpa n speeds will increase from that change alone, like other poster said.

Assuming, you have tried the router on G mode with a low channel (1 or 6) and it still did not improve speed above your other devices (assuming the numbers reported are not in the correct format).
Hi guys,
Just got my prime 2 days ago and I'm very happy with it. Only thing is the wifi reception sucks and I will knew that before I purchased it and I'm OK with it. My question is can we just add a wifi dongle to the user port to get better reception? Is it possible or since its built in it won't work. I haven't tried it yet because I can't find the frikken dock except online. I'll have it shortly tho.
Thanks in advance :-D

Not entirely a lost cause - chances are there may be some adapter that can be made to work. Today, they added Wired Ethernet support, and many adapter work without any drivers.
Though in your case, I'd recommend a different channel, or investing in a wireless range extender/repeater.
On ethernet the stock browser has no lags...... I connected a Linksys USB200M v2 adapter....I am gettting full bars on WiFi from my NetGear WNDR4500 router and lags persist.....Hope this helps ASUS with this problem.
How does it compare to desktop browsing loading times
So far so good on the ethernet here.
Most people who have the problem probably wouldn't if they would just go into Settings>Advanced in the browser and change "Enable plug-ins" to On Demand .. this stops the flash windows from auto loading and lagging it out
Nicely implemented by Asus, using the USB Ethernet Adaptor that came with Asus Zenbook.

I am using that setting ever since I purchased device... still ethernet loads faster with no lags.... Have you tried on USB ethernet?
It hasn't lagged for me or given the wait window since someone recommended I do that on here so no actually don't need to.

It should work, but I would advice against using it because the network adaptor will increase the power drain quite a bit. Further more, the way it is connected to the prime makes it hard for the user to use the tablet properly without stressing the physical connection of the USB kit to the prime.

Update .21 is the latest update (although another is right around the corner) and the one you need. I don't have mine yet, so I'm not too sure, but as soon as you connect it and slide the locking mechanism over then it's connected. You have to turn your GPS on under your settings and it should be using the dongle. Have a walk outside, put it on and slide the lock, turn your GPS on and run GPS Test or something similar. Remove dongle and test again, you should see a huge decrease in performance if it performs without the dongle at all.
to be honest i have never seen any problem with the gps, i know its not really a great benchmark but seems just as good as my galaxy s.
i will run the tests with and without but didnt seem any quicker to lock when i popped outside a while ago. wasnt sure it was actually working which is why i posted this. wondered if it showed up anywhere similar to when the dock is in place.

.22 is the latest update. It was forced so you wouldn't have seen it happen. Being rooted doesn't stop updates. I am rooted and it updated itself days ago. It contained the fixes for the dongle to work. For those who are unlocked, you have to wait for your ROM writer to add the code. Gary has said that ASUS are looking to release a version of NVFlash for those who are unlocked.

Really? I suppose you're one of the rare few who has relatively decent GPS reception somehow. Good for you lol, I hate you
I suppose the only way to really be sure is to disconnect the internal GPS from its antenna and then use the dongle. Surely there would be a way for the system to realize the dongle is inserted and to let the end-user know about it. I mean, they tell us to type words with the keyboard, I just can't believe they're not telling us we've plugged the dongle in. I wonder if some kind of Tasker profile couldn't differentiate between it and the dock, I doubt it?

Any good?
Does the dongle make a marked difference in reception?
none at all as far as i can see.
could be
1. not working / user error
2. my prime gps was working ok to start with.
hoping there is someway to get feedback from the prime to let me know its using the dongle

I have the dongle
It definitely helps my gps but it dose look bad.
Maybe a company may start making skins for the dongle to make them more attractive and protected. Exposed dongles isn't good. It' not immuned to bumps and bruises.

My bad. Typo on my part. Of course it is .21!!
i think the dongle is well designed. locks in place and fairly discreet considering. could have been an ugly block like a usb stick or the camera add on thingy for the ipod.
i found it makes a nice handle when reading a book

I'll pull out my inner demandarin real quick to say do not apply direct pressure to the dongle - don't use it as an actual handle!
That being said, IMO it would be OK so long as you have larger hands and are pretty careful about it, just don't go trying to support your entire tablet with it. Don't support the tablet at all with it actually, seriously, going to feel terrible if you accidentally crack your screen lol
well didnt actually mean just the dongle. just adds a bit of a ridge to stop and slippage while holding
