Rebuild dalvik cache - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I found out that I can't install apk files because I need to wipe my dalvik cache. Is this the same as rebuilding the dalvik

According to the a2sdgui app, a dalvik rebuild erases the contents of the dalvik cache, forcing file rebuild when the phone restarts.

You can boot to recovery and wipe dalvik cache. That way it will be rebuilt on next boot. It may also take longer than usuall.

dalvik cache is a program cache area for the program dalvik. Dalvik is a java based virtual machine that is the bases for running your programs (the ones that have the .apk extension). In order to make access times faster (because there's not JIT (just in time) compiler installed by default), the dalvik-cache is the result of dalvik doing a optimization of the running program. Sounds confusing. It's similar to the prefetch files in Windows. -Andrizoid
And just FYI, you wipe the dalvik cache by booting into Clockworkmod and going to the advanced menu.

Default App Choices not sticking

OK guys i.'m tying to track down the file or files responsible for saving the programs I choose for my default apps. I am having my settings only stick for around ten minutes. After that time I have to choose my default app if multiple choices exist again.
I have a working theory that my permissions on said file or files are borked and I need to get them setup right again. I think they are not being written to the "save" fle and when the program chosen is killed my choice is killed with it.
I have tried using fix permissions in my recovery to no avail.
I am on MeanRom 2.6 ICS I am s-off with full root access.
Could someone tell me the file or files I should check and what the permissions should be when I look at them?
Thanks for any help,
Adan

I would try a full wipe (system, data, cache, dalvik-cache, sd-ext, boot) and then flash the ROM again. Some files might have gotten messed up during the flash so it's always best to start with a clean slate

Thanks that is what I ended up doing, and the problems are gone.

Clearing just the cache?

What will happen if I boot into recovery and wipe just the system cache without doing a full format of the phone?
I'm looking at trying to sort out some lagging probs I been having the past week. Already cleared all the application caches but still getting noticeable slow downs.

Apps cache will be wipe that's all. Wipe dalviks as well if you want to try removing the lags.

As said by parent, it only formats the cache, so the first boot will be somewhat longer while regenerating it

I would wipe cache wipe dalvik and fix permissions as a matter of course .
Preference when sorting battery drain/lag etc is from a base rom without multiple apps added .

Why do my apps not work

Since root and Rom flashing, my apps keep crashing after a short time.

Try reinstalling the crashing apps from store if the apps are inherited from the previous rom.

If the gapps package crashed you should fix your permissions. Could you give more details about the apps? System or user apps?
It sounds like you haven't fully wiped your phone before flashing a ROM. If all your applications were still there when you flashed the ROM, then you didn't fully wipe. You have to wipe in the following order in recovery before flashing a ROM -
1) Wipe system
2) Wipe data/factory reset
3) Wipe cache

Are you sure it won't wipe away my software information, because I thought that was in the system partition?

Do I wipe the /boot partition? I haven't, but it is an option on clockwork mod.

try pushing apk directly into /system/app. set permission and reboot. this will make it a system app. then use titanium backup or whatever to make it a user app

you dont have to reinstall all apps if you wipe dalvik cache. wiping cache make you reinstall all apps. dalvik cache just keeps record of installed apps. no harm if you clear/wipe it

To forcefully install it, take the apk of the mx player app and move it to /system/app with rw-r--r-- permissions!
