Default App Choices not sticking - HTC EVO 3D

OK guys i.'m tying to track down the file or files responsible for saving the programs I choose for my default apps. I am having my settings only stick for around ten minutes. After that time I have to choose my default app if multiple choices exist again.
I have a working theory that my permissions on said file or files are borked and I need to get them setup right again. I think they are not being written to the "save" fle and when the program chosen is killed my choice is killed with it.
I have tried using fix permissions in my recovery to no avail.
I am on MeanRom 2.6 ICS I am s-off with full root access.
Could someone tell me the file or files I should check and what the permissions should be when I look at them?
Thanks for any help,
Adan

I would try a full wipe (system, data, cache, dalvik-cache, sd-ext, boot) and then flash the ROM again. Some files might have gotten messed up during the flash so it's always best to start with a clean slate

Thanks that is what I ended up doing, and the problems are gone.

Can't install or update apps!

Okay I can't seem to install any new apps or update any existing ones on my phone. I'm able to download them, but once it tries to install its always unsuccessful. Don't get mad if this is the wrong thread. I'm new to this but usually find answers to my problems with someone else's topic. Except for this one here. Any help?

Try clearing system cache, reboot into recovery and clear dalvik cache, then reboot.
How do you clear system cache? Searched under settings could not find anything.
I've has the same problem. Lasted about two days. The apps would download but would stick on installing forever and would eventually fail. My solution was logging into Google on the phones browser. It seems like my account timed out on my phone, and after logging out and then back in, my market began to work perfectly again. You can also try what was posted above. Are you rooted? Cause of you aren't, then you won't be able to do those things said above. Good luck, hope this helps.

Tried clearing cache and signing in and out of Google. Neither worked. I have opera set up as default browser, tried with both opera & phones regular browser. Still nothing. Yes I'm rooted, running kaosfroyo v34.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Try a factory/data reset. Sounds like your only option.
Reflash after that to make sure it loaded correctly.
A simple flash over to KaosFroyo V 37 fixed the problem. Thanks for the suggestions.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Clear data for the market in settings. That usually works for me. If it doesn't, you can install the apps manually by using a file system manger (Linda File Manager, Root Explorer, etc.). The .apk should be in the download folder on the sd.

Ok so I've tried all suggestions and nothing has seemed to work. I figured, why not try a new rom? So I flashed over to Vanilla Tazz. Seemed ok at first. Was able to update apps and download some new ones. Emphasis on SOME. Cannot for the life of me get back AndroZip which is my favorite file manager. Even backed it up with Titanium before all this started happening but still could not restore it. And now with Vanilla all you get is the crappy Android keyboard. So I download the HTC ime keypoard apk. Can't install that either. Try to download eoeAppInstaller to do so, can't install that. This is really, really, really pissing me off. Is a factory reset my only hope?
Sent from my VANILLA TAZZ using XDA App
Did you do a full wipe before installing the new rom? Try doing a dalvik wipe and rebooting. It shouldn't affect the current rom you're in.
Also, it sounds like whatever problem you had in the old rom was carried to the new one. Did you use titanium to restore any apps or settings? If so, you may have "restored" the problem.
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App
Have you messed with any system apps? Like moving the market to the sd card?
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App
I backed up my kaos rom and wiped all data and cache before flashing vanilla tazz. Just wiped dalvik but still no luck.
I used titanium to restore apps but no settings. And no I haven't messed with system apps. Should I try moving to sd?
Sent from my VANILLA TAZZ using XDA App
I had a problen with my FB not syncing with contacts (across several roms). Turns out something I was restoring with Titanium (not the FB app) was causing it. It'll be a pain in the rear, but you probably need to do a full wipe, flash a clean rom, and set everything up manually. OR you could probably nand restore to a rom BEFORE you were having this problem, create a Titanium back up, wipe, flash the new rom, and restore Titanium.
Hopefully, this will straighten things out for ya!
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App
Full wipe as in factory reset right? Will that unroot the phone as well, basically forcing me to start from scratch?
Sent from my VANILLA TAZZ using XDA App
Tried nand restore but kept getting an error and could not complete.
Sent from my VANILLA TAZZ using XDA App
Full wipe for "rooters" means wipe data, dalvik, and ext (if sd card is partitioned).
Have you renamed your nandroid? If so, remove any spaces and try again.

Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
And do a data factory wipe?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
*Laptop (sorry I had to)
When flashing a new ROM:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Wipe cache
3. Under advanced:
wipe dalvik cache
4. under mounts and storage: format /system
For any mods or kernels and such follow the directions from where it was posted.
I have never done multiple wipes of any of those I listed just once each. To be on the safe side if the ROMS creator says to I would follow their directions.
Oh and when you download a ROM on your phone I would recommend only doing it with WiFi. It just ensures a more stable connection I feel like. No matter how you download it tho check the MD5 sum. Android file verification is a great free app to do it right on your phone. Winmd5summer is a good free one for Windows.

Thanks JBO 1018 REALLY!!!!! I NEEDED that break down. Ok when downloading to phone i will use my mifi 4g and my USB phone won't work in my lab top sometimes it won't read, so can i use my sd card reader to put the rom on the sd card that way?

Can't Restore Nandroid backup. What shall I do?!

I created a backup because I wanted to try a mod ,I didn't like the mod because it messed up the system UI.
So I tried to restore the backup however I ended up with the Samsung logo flashing?
I advanced restored the boot image and the phone started but all my apps were force closing , then I tried the full restore however the /data section wouldn't restore because it was corrupted
what's my best option? I've currently decided to boot to the nandroid menu and go on wipe data/factory reset , the phone has restored and I'm restoring using Titanium Backup. This will bring back my user apps I think?. But is there any way to restore wifi passwords and bookmarks and calendar appointments?
Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance
I am pretty sure that by signing into your Google account it should restore your WiFi passwords and bookmarks automatically

Before flashing anything.. go to recovery wipe cache and dalvik cache, when done "fix permissions" ,this option is located in advanced menu in recovery. Now reboot.
Use "titanium backup" to backup BT WIFI and other settings.
Ps. Don't restore system apps, only the app data if absolutely necessary.

I've used Mobile Odin to flash the stock LFB .I've done this before perfectly.
But this time once I load the file the:
Kernel,Recovery,System,Cache, Modem and Hidden are filled in
Param and Data are clear.
And I tick:
Enable everroot .Inject SU ,Inject Mobile Odin.
And I select
Wipe data and Cache
Wipe Dalvik Cache.
Then I select flash firmware.
the mobile Odin screen pops up and it shows the progress when it flashes the
kernel recovery system hidden
and wipes the dalvik cache
However the Message App still force closes!
could somebody please help me out ? I'm getting proper stressed now

Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .

Did u download the additional file beside the app itself. Either from mobile Odin thread or if bought it from market, then turn on wifi and open Odin again and u be asked to download additional file.
remember to grant superuser permission.
Update from the idiot, partial success achieved .
I ended up flashing the stock rom using odin on the desktop then I flashed CWM recovery rooted supersu etc
Then I started the phone, memory card is intact, however phone memory was wiped. Luckily my titanium folder is on the memory card. So luckily I was able to restore the apps and data. No force closes now
The stuff I lost on the internal memory was music (now restored) camera pics (most restored thanks to dropbox) ringtones and bookmarks.
However I have much more free internal memory than before, so I was wondering whether I could be missing an important folder or something than may cause issue with apps or is there anything important I might have lost?
Thanks once again for helping an idiot out

No your probably not missing anything
Important in fact when your phones internal storage was wiped it very likely got rid of the traces of any file that could cause problems.

I think if you long press on the options that are green it should bring up a list of options such as backup, restore, etc. try that and see what happens.

apk installation help

So basically I can't install apk files on my phone. It's a recent issue since I switched over to the newest fj stock mod rom. I download an .apk, I put it on my phone but when I click on it to install it, the option to install it won't respond. I can click cancel. but I can't click install... I can't seem to figure out why it won't do it, and I'm sure it's something stupid that I'm not getting...
This exact thing happened to me.. The ONlY way to fix it is to flash new roms sorry
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
That is not the only way to fix it. You can put the apk in the data/app folder and reboot and it should install. You do have unknown sources checked right?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Yeah, I have that option checked. I'll try moving them there and see if that works.

It didn't work when I put them in that folder and rebooted. What did work was turning off JuiceDefender and then trying to install them. Not sure why but turning it off made things install. Whatever... lol

assuming you flash roms as a solution, would you have a few backups?
juice defender:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.latedroid.juicedefender&hl=en
As rquiett mentioned.....put the app into the data/app folder via any good root explorer app, then reboot.
The apk can also be placed into the system/app folder for the same outcome. the major difference here, is the device now sees the apk as a system app, and will not be removable via traditional methods like a user app. It would need removal by the root explorer app that placed it there.
Flashing "the same" build to get an app, is generally not needed, however, I have used this method many times over the years after I removed a system app I needed back.
You can simply flash the "same" rom over the top of the existing rom, and the pre-loaded rom apps are back.
Note: you must wipe the caches after using this method, or data corruption could occur. "cache and dalvik cache"
Long story short:
Root explorer app to place into data/app......or system/app
and if you are feeling adventurous....then flash the "same" base build over the top of your current build, then wipe caches and reboot.
Standard disclaimers apply....g

[Q] Crpalmer's kernel issues

I have flashed the cm11 12/20 (latest nightly) and crpalmers version 5.3.7 kernel. His init.d scripts are supposed to lock in the cpu frequencies which i set to 162000 and 1026000. The crpalmer.log file says the frequencies are locked in but my min and max cpu frequencies are both 1134000 for some reason. this is on a fresh install and ive tried rebooting and wiping the cache and dalvik cache multiple times. does anyone know how i could successfully lock in the cpu frequencies? no app will do it either. thanks in advance.
Why don't you ask this in his kernal thread. He would be a good guy to ask.

What are you looking at to see what your min max frequencies are?
If the logs say they are set, they usually are.
I don't have the administrative privileges or something like that. So I decided this was the second best place. I'm looking in settings>performance>processor.

You should have administrator privileges (superuser) if you were able to flash a cm-based ROM and kernel.
Do a clean flash. Wipe dalvik, cache, system, and data. Then flash the ROM and gapps and then boot and set up the phone. Then go back into recovery and flash the kernel.
I mean I don't have administrative privileges to post in the original development forums. Sorry about the confusion. And already did a clean wipe and installed the kernel after the first boot. Should I try again?

The scripts should work as advertised unless there is another app or a script/mod you installed that's trying to override the kernel's settings.
Just try from the beginning, wipe davlik, cache, data, and system. Install the rom and let it run and set up some things. Then flash the kernel.
Do not restore anything (data and/or apps). If things are working fine, then make a nandroid. Then you can start restoring things. If anything you restore mucks things up at least you have a pristine backup that you could restore.
Okay I'll try that. Thank you for the help, it is very much appreciated!
