Has anyone had any luck, or even attempted, using some sort of compact, external microphone for Google Talk or Hangouts? I tried searching but all of the threads are a year old, full of misinformation about how the 3.5mm jack is "out only" or involves soldering and magic.
Id really just like to know if I could throw in a non-powered or battery powered (gotta be small) microphone and have someone actually hear me when chatting. Right now everyone struggles to hear me when the tablet isnt 6" away from my face.
A directional mic that would allow me to set the tablet on a table (standing in its case of course) would be excellent. Small and reasonably priced would be great because the purpose is to use it on the road.

USB works with more magic, you have to port linux drivers :/
Bluetooth is the Easiest and Best option. I'd definitely go bluetooth for ease of use and connect.

I'm looking more for conference functionality. So I can have it sitting on the dining room table and have the girlfriend and I chatting in a hangout. I surprised this hasn't been addressed, I guess nobody uses their tablet for Google talk or hangouts.
I use the earbuds that came with my Nexus S, they have a microphone built in.
As far as stand-alone microphones, I don't know of any. If you find one I'd like to know!
Id think if that external mic plugged in works fine when a simple, stand alone mic would. But most of the ones on Amazon have horrible reviews. I was hoping someone had thought about having a group chat on the thing.
I tried one of thos bluetooth car speakerphones and it was horrible. That is going back.

its an external speaker with a mic built in. so you can set your tablet on the table and place the mic closer to you, its bluetooth so dont have to worrie about wires, i've used it for my phone streaming music and when a call comes in i can talk. . on my tablet i use it to play movies audio but never used the mic in that sense.
maybe that way will work for you
Any chance you could try a chat or hangout with it? Ive tried my existing bluetooth solutions and nothing works.
As for wired mics Ive tried multiple and all have failed. They dont record audio in any way well (camera, chat, whatever) and plugging a mic in tells the transformer its got headphones in.

I tired the original headphone with built in mic which came with blackberry Bold 9700. It worked. Both audio out and mic is working same time.
Does anybody know if a USB mic would work conecting it to the dock? I stream video on ustream but built in mic is below average. I was thinking on buying a usb mic and conecting it to the usb ports. Will it work?

Depending on how much you want to spend and what converters you are willing to use:
a Zoom H2n has worked well for me (adjustable gain, uses up to 4 built in mics to get audio from all sides).

my nexus s headphones don't work as a mic on my tf101.
Instead an iphone headphone works well as mic.

I'm using obsidian v2 froyo build. Music and navigation work fine thru the headphone Jack when attached to my car stereo. However when a call comes in or if I'm trying to make a call I get nothing. I've searched thru various forums and others are having the same issue but could not find a solution. Any help would be appreciated
its a "feature" of all the froyo roms. froyo seems to want to ignore headphones without mic as it has a self-esteem problem and does not trust the quality of its mic at a distance.
it seems to be a kernel issue and won't be able to be addressed until they devs have source. only alternative is to have a cable with an in-line mic. that works for most of the roms. (i would say all, except i just flashed latest macnut and its not working )

The funny thing is when I first flashed obsidian v2 I attempted to try out the 3.5mm out thru my car speakers. I was listening to Pandora in my car, I received a call and I heard the caller thru my car speakers. But it has not worked since then. And all I'm using is an audio out cable attached to my Alpine head unit
This does not work on any Froyo Roms, because of the required external mic, but does anyone know of a 3.5mm adapter that has a jack for headphones as well as a inline mic? Would this work ?

When I get a call, I pick up the mic on the cable and speak into it and I can hear the caller through my stereo and they can hear me just fine. This has always worked for 2.1 ROMS and so far has worked for three 2.2 ROMS I've tried.

It is working for you because of your extra external mic, it is confirmed a few post back that when using an external mic, it work fine but when using just a pair ear phones + internal mic (the one at the bottom of your phone), it fails to work. It used to work on 2.1 roms.
same thing here, went from fusion 1.1 to V4 Onyx...big pain in the ass out on the road today. Never wold have thought to check for that. I constantly have music going, ussually it will pause my mp3, and beep and show up the phone call, but now music plays, until I anwser and no go from the headphone jack.. I have mine hooked to an fm transmitter so i can take calls over car speakers.

Which cable are you using that has a built in mic? Should I look in my G1 / Mytouch boxes for an old one?

It's an iPhone accessory, but works fine with the Vibrant. It's been a few months since I bought it, and don't remember where I got it, but I do know that I got two of them for less than 8 bucks.

Ok, so I have already done my searches on here and tried finding users of the TF that are using Bluetooth audio receivers and had no luck. I was wondering if anyone on here has been able to stream music from their tablet to their stereo and if so what are you using and what is the best range you have gotten out of the product.
I will be streaming music from about 30 feet away with a direct line of site.
Any help would be great seeing as I have not had any luck here on the forum finding someone that shares my common interest in Bluetooth for the TF.

I hope I can help you, even if I'm quite new in this tablet stuff...
I just got my TF101 and one of the first things to do was to use my AudioPro RadioOne as speaker by Bluetooth.
I just simply activated BT in the Transformer, searched for visible BT to couple with it and once found, I entered the code given in the radio's manual. Immediately the sound switched to the radios speakers (and was cut from Transformer whilw I used the radio). The sound is as good as it can be and much better than with a cable.
I could go on listening being ~10m (30ft, I guess) away in an other room with the Transformer.
The Transformer works easily on BT, you might need to find out your receivers configuration and code, normally given in the owners manual.

30 ft is pushing it though....i think that is right around bluetooth's limit.

For very good noiseless audio and MUCH further transmission than bluetooth, I use Audio Engine W1. The only thing it does require USB power. Should work with dock but I haven't gotten it to work yet; need straight power only pins out. A battery powered USB port should work. (plugged in to USB power) worked great at a presentation I did this past weekend.
Bluetooth should be straight forward. I use some sony bluetooth headphones that work great.
I'm still looking for a quality solution for using your own headphones. Bluetooth is not good enough really. Ideally I would like a usb transmitter and a wireless reciever I can plug my headphones into and can run for around 6 hours. Q-Bean-ST is the only thing I have found but they look like junk and the battery life is a bit crap.

Youre barking up the wrong tree. Bluetooth is "good enough." Where it isnt people are running audio to $400 IEMs and no wireless solution would be satisfactory. So, using that logic nobody develops it.
Maybe I just had a bad experience using a SE HBH-DS970. It constantly drops out and cannot go more than a few feet from the transmitter.
A lot of it has to do with the transmitter. My phone, for instance, seems to only get about 10 feet with line of site. The laptop can be in other rooms no problem. The TF, I just tested it, can only go one room over, once you get a few walls in the way it cuts out occasionaly.
This is all using the thumb sized receiver posted above, the amazon reviews make it sound like the powered belkin model has better range but I never pulled the trigger because if I am using it I am either in the car or in the living room having it play over the sound system attached to my dish/bd player/tv so I am no more than a dozen feet away at any given time.
I use the Voiis bluetooth audio receiver, works great! Good audio quality.
Well, the Nokia AD42W works great with my Transformer to listen to anything through my stereo. I got it very cheap in a local shop, it's possible that the product is discontinued...
Of course, there's the problem of delay. You have to forgive the lack of lip-sync when playing through BT, but it's a bit annoying at times. Audio quality is great, of course not as good as a direct connection.
I have tried it with my Sony system, lg tv, Samsung tv and Sony tv, b-tube speaker,

Do have a slight issue with the Sony,
I can stream music through bt to the tv once paired,
But to send a picture to the tv I have to un-paire first

I have a stereo one, and it works fine as music listening but microphone doesn't work even if in the parameters it is recognized as phone and audio. we have to say that integrated microphone is so good that it is not necessary to to link to another one (joke)
2 days searching and no fix for that integrated microphone quality problem. the only solution is a (f...) wired headset.
In my bmw, I have a cable that I used to plug my iPhone in and was able to charge/play my music thru the interface. Since I switched over to SGS2 (love it btw), I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement for this cable. Is there anything like this for the SGS2, or am I out of luck?

I use the car dock that is made for the phone by Samsung.
Best Solution:
Get a new car. My 2010 Mazda M3 has Bluetooth in it so all I had to do is buy a new car charger and connected it to Bluetooth. That's for your best experience though.
Less than the best solution:
Buy a Samsung Car dock, hope you have an AUX port or get an FM transmitter! It's a lot of work to have this done right, clean and everything. But it works! You can find most of the parts on amazon for really cheap. But i hope your car stereo has an Aux port or Bluetooth cuz if not you are kinda gonna be screwed into buying a new one. I don't know of any that support connecting through usb on any other phone than the iPhone or a standard flash drive with just MP3s on it.

I just use a simple cable from my headphone jack to my aux in jack. I do wish it was able to display stuff like track info and album art, but hey, first world problems I guess. Poweramp does the job.

I don't know why you're having problems, but my bluetooth audio sounds heavenly using the gateway that I referenced in my earlier post.
And by the way, this 2003 spec sheet lists a top bit rate of 345 kb/s on Bluetooth 1.0. I don't know where you got your number.
BT streaming is worse than wired because you've got your phone/player transceiver encoding, and then the external receiver decoding your music. You can have all the bandwidth in the world but you'd still be limited by the quality of your transmitting and receiving hardware's digital audio capabilities.
I have one of these, it works very well. I've used FM tuners before and they all come in static-y. This one comes in perfectly, can charge your phone, has audio IN, and can be used as a hands free phone. Pretty nifty.

Here's my situation: In my car, I often have my OG connected to my stereo with an A2DP bluetooth audio receiver (without a mic). This works well for listening to music, or getting directions from the nav. However, if I answer a call while connected to it, I can hear the audio through my car speakers, but the other person can't hear me. I understand that the OG's internal mic is disabled at this point, as it is expecting a bluetooth mic to be connected. The work-around I have found is to disable bluetooth for phone calls. This plays the call audio through the phone speaker, and utilizes the internal mic like normal speakerphone.
What I would like is a mix of the two. I want the call audio to play through the car speakers, but enable the OG's internal mic so I can talk through that. Does anyone know of an app or setting I'm missing that might accomplish this?

I was hoping to use this in the next few days. I don't think I can learn java that quickly. But I agree, it seems like it should be pretty easy to accomplish. Software turns the mic off, it should be able to turn it back on.

The SoundAbout app seems like it will work when the phone is connected to a headset (audio out through headset, input via phone mic). But I can't find anything that will accomplish that when outputting audio through BT.

Yeah, I think I might be forced to go with that Belkin adapter shown in the link above, which Is too bad because I was hoping not to spend anymore money, haha.
phone mic instead of bluetooth device
I had the same problem. I got fed up and decided to move the bluetooth mic to a more convenient location in my car, since I could not disable it. Before I re-positioned the un-soldered mic to a new location, I decided to make sure my soldering did not inadvertently damage any of the device. To my delight, without the mic being physically present, it defaulted to my phone mic. So, for me at least my problem was solved by removing the mic in question. I have no idea if it will work on other bluetooth devices.

Just for info, after much research I don't think this is possible as Android does not allow routing of call audio to A2DP at all, probably due to security reasons?
I just plug a lead to the headphone jack and patch into the auxiliary input of my stereo. I also had one of those USB dongal Bluetooth receivers that worked exactly that way but it stopped working and other ones don't work, the one that did work was able to connect to phone audio as well as media audio. So it seems that if the mic can be disabled form the other end the Android mic will kick in. Android OS sucks you cannot do anything with the hardware. PC's piss over Google.
They probably don't do it because of latency error affecting feedback canceling. And what has external hardware got to do with security. Google just uses it as an excuse to getaway with marketing an inferior OS.

it's totally unacceptable that I can use A2DP stereo audio + Computer Built in Microphone, but I can't do this with android!
Companies are taking off the headphone jack but they haven't figured out HD Bluetooth microphones yet!

I believe they are among the best for phones, plus idk if you have the HD audio recorder app on your variant or model, but it does work amazingly well if you use the right settings (gain/levels). Been awhile since I read about the mic's but this phone uses more than 1 mic and they aren't junk, kinda what it was made for, idk if external mic would sound any better or not, especially w/o an expensive mic(s). But I initially bought an irig I/O audio interface that is compatible w/android for a mic or guitar with midi device and has that input and an output for recording, I got $400 worth of software included with the purchase (Amplitube 4 and more for free). BTW it is for sale and basically brand new if your interested, barely used replaced it with the 2i2) zBut for reference the irig i/o will do 24bit/96khz and the mic's and HD audio recorder on the phone will save Flac files up to 24bit/192khz. Or check out irig uo, was made for Android. I got my eye on the axe i/o which just came out for guitar recording, I wish they had these cheap modelers and Sims in the 90's, I think its awesome, I never had the money to buy the real equipment. Give some more info what your trying to do and maybe I could help more. Otherwise a usb audio interface on a PC is the way to go if you have one. Android is way behind Apple on compatible audio interfaces. I use the focusrite scarlet 2i2 that I use for my guitar with amplitube 4 amplifier Sims, it has 2 inputs for a mic and a instrument for recirding which is what (most) people use to make youtube videos. I could technically get it to work on my phone but not much to work with. Android needs to fix there audio latency issues, which is the reason companies don't bother making anything for it, getting more lately but it's not worth it imo, tons of stuff for Apple though but Ive never and will never buy an iPhone. Yeah, the ear speaker turns into a 3rd microphone during high decibel environments (like concerts).

Internal mics might be good but I need a professional microphone with a wind and noise protection and higher sensitivity, kinda the same they use on DSLRs.
I would like to use it for recording sound samples (nature, forest, etc)

A good usb mic and a USB interface is all you need then. Make sure the interface is compatible with whatever your using. The irig i/o would work with Android or the other one I mentioned above. I'LL sell it cheap to you if your interested.

To connect a stereo microphone (or 2 mono microphones with a Y splitter) to your phone you need this adapter:

Since this has a USB A plug, you need an adapter cable to convert the plug to USB C. Something like this:

Then if you're using an app that can handle stereo recording you should be good to go.
