Enable/Disable Fast Dormancy - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

To Enable/Disable Fast Dormancy on ICS add the appropriate line to your build.prop. build.prop can be found in system/app folder. To edit just press on build.prop and then edit with a text editor. Place the edit at the very bottom of your build.prop.
Enable: ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=1
Disable: ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=0
You do not add the word Enable:/Disable: just add ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=#
I know I already posted this on another thread but a lot of people (not all) do not read the threads but still wanna know the fix so I thought it would be easier to start another thread and put it in the first post so nobody has to search for an answer. Fast Dormancy is believed to save battery life when disabled.

Just to make sure... I want it enabled... right?

Because of carrier support. If they use it, they assume you want it on. Its a networking implementation for traffic control.

How about a explanation of what it exactly is! Rather then post 2 build props...so a user has an idea what it is????

Cause I assume with all the threads about Fast Dormancy on XDA and many other sites most people have heard of it and know what it is used for. I can give an explanation but you can also ask for an explanation or simply do a google search. Here is a link about Fast Dormancy that gets strait to the point about why people wanna use this feature on the I717 Note. Read the last paragraph.
http://www.wirecast.org/r/awesome-product-highly-recommended/9924.xml

I know what it is.. but as you see you had a member ask if its supposed to be enabled or disabled...it just helps a little more when making threads to perhaps explain what it is.. or what it could do..Just helps the inexperienced users to learn..

On Android 2.#.# there is a few simple way to turn it on and off but on ICS its not as simple. I'm thinking about making a script so that it can be turned on and off at anytime.

Just thought I might add, the "huge battery improvements" have no credibility for the most part unless screen on times are included. 60+ hours means nothing if you're only getting like 2 or 3 hours of screen on time. OP or whoever has done this build prop edit should run a few tests with and without it enabled and show the great increase in screen on time, or most people will continue to be confused about this.
That being said, I can see where it can increase standby battery life, but I doubt that it makes much of a difference in screen on time, which is what matters most to anybody who has a charger on hand every night.
*******edit******** meant to post this in the bounty thread about fast dormancy where the op hasn't done anything but complain and make ridiculous claims without much proof.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2

so I have made ridiculous claims with no proof huh..... and I have just complained. Well a big kiss my booty to you.
Please look here mr positivity starting with post 821. Then read post 823, 826, 827, 831 and more to come.
I will say it again, it works for me in my every day use. The pattern is the same and before it was 8 to 12 hours now its up to 30. If you don't believe it then dont bother with disabling it

Actually, no, you still haven't shown anything regarding screen on time, which is arguably the best indicator of battery life. My note could get 30 hours bone stock if I barely used it. I get about 14-15 hours with almost 4 hours of screen on time in a usual day, and haven't touched fast dormancy. Show me your 30 hours with 4 hours of screen on time, and I'll eat my words.
In the mean time, you should probably grow up a little, as we like to keep things mature and civil around here. Also, you should probably get on with paying that 25 dollar bounty you posted; its only fair to porkenheimer and the guy who unbricked you.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2

ok here we go... first I have nothing I need to prove to you. My every day use is generally the same. Prior to FD being disabled, I would get a total of 12 to 15 hours of batter between charges. Now its 30 hours plus. Thats good enough for me and anyone else who cares.
Secondly, I dont know of many phones (especially this size) that four hours plus of continuous on screen time is going to get there.
as for the bounty, I ask for a dev to come up with a solution and I will gladly split it between the two. But I find it funny that you and so many truly doubt its value so does that mean they really deserve a bounty.
And I might remind you, I am grown up but you were the first to make baseless accusations in a thread I wasnt even a participant in. Talk about an unfair fight or is that your M.O.
ta ta
P.S. do some thread searching on me. The same results were posted (even better) when I had my international note
P.S.S. purely ridiculous what goes on over trying to extend our battery life. You would think we are debating world peace. up...tight.........
I will once again charge over night and run a FULL cycle and then post. If you eat or dont eat I could care less but at least others can decide for themselves

Again, you have said nothing about your screen on time with it enabled vs. disabled. For all anybody knows, you just got more conscious about conserving battery once you have it disabled on a device, and a little conservation can go a long ways in improving standby time if you have very little screen on time. Screenshots prove legitimate improvements of screen on time, of which, you have provided none. You can say your battery life increased as much as you want, but unless that screen on time improves, you haven't said much. And if you would have read my first post, I meant to post it in your thread but made a mistake. My intention wasn't to go behind your back. And as far as I'm concerned, my accusations are more based in fact from my experience with my past two androids and their forums regarding battery life than your claims of ridiculous battery life are. Screen on time matters because your screen is on when you're using your phone. Anybody who lives in a modern city with access to a power outlet could give a hoot about your standby time increasing, as that's most likely the case. And about the bounty, somebody did come up with a solution. And people question the legitimacy because they haven't seen solid, set in stone, improvements that are proven...hell, most people don't know what it is.
All I asked for was some screen time values, and a comparison of enabled vs. disabled with respect to screen time, that is all. You can either oblige, or I guess I'll try it myself. No need to argue and clutter up porkenhimer's thread.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2

I am not going to oblige you. I think you are perfectly capable of running your own test. If you feel what I have given so far is inconclusive, bogus or usefulness to everyone else then your entitled to that opinion. This is still a place where others can try the same course I took and if they get a result then great. if they dont then its a failure.
But your decision to deride it unless it has an a-b is just that, another accusations. I have said at least three or four time for me I have seen major increases in the time between charges. Perhaps your basis of "we all know putting on a charger every night" is the sole argument why you think this isnt valid. Again, others are free to decide not you.
Thats it for me folks. Carry welchertc all you want but I think from my perspective I have said all I care to address with you.

SBC Kernels?

I was wondering if anyone has developed an SBC kernel for the Thunderbolt?

+1
Loved it on my evo as well...
Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think think out thunderbolt charges like the older devices
They charged to %100 and when it reached 100 it would die down to 90 and the process would repeat
We don't have that problem as far as I can tell, I've never had that %10 drop I used to get with my inc
Again I may be wrong
>--The Game--<
Yea, I'm not sure either, it would be awesome though if a dev could weigh in on the subject.

It would be nice if people who want questions answered gave more details. We're not mind readers.
It's sort of a stretch to ask if a verizon phone has some random kernel from a sprint phone and only give some vague acronym as the sum of the details.

If you don't know what SBC is, then you are of no help to him. By the by it has nothing to do with the carrier, no cause for you to be a ****.

Apologies, my first reply was uncalled for, I am normally a civil person. SBC is some sort of trickle charge feature (not carrier specific) that in my personal experience greatly extended the life of my battery, it just so happened that I owned an evo.
I know at one point the were considered to be a bit dangerous, but I don't think that is still the thought now.
Just wondering what the devs had to think or what their thoughts were, and I didn't mean to offend you.

It's a reasonable expectation. A lot of people in this section ask for help but don't give enough details.
And my TB has never needed to be bump charged as my Inc did, no matter how long it stays plugged in once it has hit 100%, so I'm going to assume this is not needed. I haven't heard anyone else complain of needing to bump charge either..

No worries or anything. I didnt think anything of your post, just gets frustrating sometimes when you do want to help with questions that seem more unique than usual. Even if I didn't know the answer instantly, it doesnt mean I couldn't find it, since I know how to look for info and I have development experience and I majored in computer science as an undergrad, so it's not like reading about this stuff is gibberish to me (just 99% of my development experience is on other linux platforms that dont get their power from a battery generally). I like to problem solve and your question was something different than the usual top 10, so I just wanted to know more either to help or for my own personal info.
Anyways, no kernel on the TB I know of will do what you mentioned after reading up on it I'm afraid. They all charge the normal way android does more or less, but some have implemented "fast charge" so you can use gps or something without killing your battery. I've never really had to bump charge either and my battery life is probably 12-16 hours on normal usage. The only posting I've seen mentioning sbc was here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13008311&postcount=523 and it was ignored.
If you really want to ask the developers about it, I would look in the developer's thread and post a message in the threads related to whatever kernel and see if the developers reply. The other option would be to try to idle in IRC for the phone's channel (details are on a sticky in the TB forums) and wait for a kernel developer to pop up and start talking and ask if you are able to catch them at the right time. The most I've done is compiled the TB kernel that was already premade (adrynalyne's) just for the experience of cross compiling (which is way more of a pain when you want to port things less common, but still fun).
I think Imoseyon (one of the main kernel developers) has/had an incredible and his kernel is based partly on the work he did for that phone. I would think he would be aware of sbc and either thought it wasnt needed or had another reason for not incorporating it. It can potentially cause damage to the phone so perhaps that combined with the phone not really needing it is why. However, it doesnt hurt to ask since it hasn't been formally stated anywhere on the forums as to why.
Hopefully my posting is of some help to you, despite certain statements that I am of no help (ironically said posting was of no help either). I don't think I've seen that guy do much other than flamebait and troll
off topic thing, but those that haven't seen it, if you click on someone's profile and view it, you can add them to your ignore list so you no longer see their replies (well you still see they're there, but you have to click on them).

Agree, and it seems even worse when people keep making daily new threads about those same issues.
Happy with mine, only slight - is the battery but with my spare one I really can't complain, when it takes 30 secs to switch and restart the phone.
Who's moaning? Generaly what I see is that people are very pleased with their handsets. It's just, like always, there are some minor points which need improving. Some of which can be done through software updates and for others we need to wait for the S3.
For everyone who talks about these problems, and just read this.
So what? Some might have a tiny yellow line when the brightness is low, and others may have a minor problem with the battery.
But now, think about how great and fast the phone really is, and stop thinking about these minor problems above you barely notice.
So yeah, I love my GS2. It awesome.

Have a browse through any forum on XDA and you'd struggle to believe anyone is actually happy with their handset. Unfortunately the internet is where everyone comes to moan and complain, be it about phones, tablets or socks!
99% of people turn to forums in search of problem resolution, so it is a disproportionate representation you see when looking through. Have you ever been compelled to come online and create a thread to simply say, "Phone is Awesome!"
You know what, I'll say my part......
"Phone is Awesome"

This is my first Android experience. I upgraded from iPhone 3G which was, with the most current OS, not running properly.
If I use my Galaxy S2 like I did my iPhone, with all communications services running, then my phone lasts less than one day. Recharging the battery takes so much time as well, typically 3-5 hours time. I was at a street festival yesterday and wanted to take a few photos. I launched the camera app and it warned me I didn't have enough disk space (I also have an almost empty 32GB microSD card installed). There are no settings to save photos to the SD card by default. All of a sudden, today, the camera app is now saving photos to the SD card... couldn't it have chosen that option yesterday, when I wanted to take photos? For me the GPS isn't working that well.
Very happy camper here!

Battery life: once and for all.

I have something to say to all developers:
When you make a ROM, please don't say: "Awesome battery backup" or "Great battery life". It doesn't tell me anything AT ALL. I suggest when making ROMs test their battery life, make them go through browsing, movies, playing games, calling and ALL WHILE STAYING CONNECTED TO 3G/HPRS/EDGE, not WiFi. There are scripts that can help you with that and ways to do it, such as:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-accessories/102353-battery-stress-test-htc-1350mah-stock-battery-vs-dx-tp2-1500mah-battery.html
We all know WiFi takes less battery than a regular OTA data connection. I think all the ROMs here are good, some are great and some are not. But I'd like to see that so I can take more seriously what you're posting on the Features list of the ROM.
That is all.
I believe you posted in the wrong section, this should belong to the general section. But anyway you are partially right, most developers do test the battery life, not as intensive as you said but they tested it anyway, besides none of us do all the things you mentioned at the same time and even if you do thats the minority of us.This is related to the (!!!!!awesome rom ,Blazingly fast!!!!!!!! ) rom titles that are all arround this section
My AOSP doesn't even have 3G for god sake
Ace-ing all tests.
Sure, what I'm trying to convey is professionalism. Devs say: "Awesome battery backup". BACKUP? What the hell is that supposed to mean? As a user and as a programmer, I would like to know how good is a ROM before testing it and then sadly, wasting my time.
Wrong section, but you have a valid point. I don't trust the word of anyone, most of the things here are just placebos. Posting screenshots for battery life would help too. In fact, I think even scripts need to show such things or explain them.

Well, I don't agree. Actually devs could say their ROM gives you sweet dreams if they wanted to. There's ROM review threads where you can post your experience with each ROM and check what other users say, then make your choice.
Really, how much time can you waste testing a ROM related to the time it takes to cook one?
Don't trust the claims on the ROM thread?
Don't use it.
Didn't like it? Didn't get what was promised? The battery life isn't great?
Then post your experience and let other users know.

err that's just the problem! They say that "this rom has awesome battery" without testing it to the edge! They sometimes test it only with normal usage without wifi, heavy gaming, 3g etc. So of course if they say the battery is good users would really expect something from it but end up getting disappointed because it didn't live up to it's word! So yeah "Don't trust the claims on the ROM thread?
Don't use it."
If that's the case, no one would even be using any rom right right now, not even stock.

Ace-ing all tests.
Don't worry, I'm going to start doing the tests myself. And no, I'm not developing anything at all, but, so what? I'm fed up with the "all-high-and-mighty" attitude some devs (some, not all) have around here in XDA. Let this remind us we were all users once.
But, anyhow, I believe adding some quality standards that need to be met in order to release a ROM will not only increase the ROMs quality but also filter bad ROMs with devs that do not update their ROMs or just sh*tty ROMs that make no sense at all and I've seen my share around here...

I love you for saying that.
it doesnt matter if one has no idea of making roms . everyone should be
equal so stop looking at devs like they are all-high-and-mighty as well as devs feeling the same

Anyway, I'd like to propose that quality standards are enforced here on the forums, so when you download something, you know it has to be good since it meets certain conditions. I have some ideas about it, but a discussion is long overdue. Suggestions, anyone?

(Q) amoled screen black spots, and how fast the screen degrades

Alright, I know if I search, I can find hundreds of articles about how this happens on amoled screens. I am not trying to beat a dead horse, but this will be my first amoled screen. How bad are the black spots? At what point is it bad enough to get a replacement? Being a "power user"(5 hours screen on a day), will the screen degrade before a 2 year contract is up? I jumped on a Rezound when it first came out, and it has burned me, I just don't want to feel let down because my screen went to pot 6 months in. Thanks

A second post? Really?
Sorry you don't like the answers but here we try again. Every single one of them will have it. Never seen an AMOLED screen that doesn't. Second you could get one worse or get one better. Pure gambling. Also, it doesn't get worse over time.
Apparently all this looking around and searching you didn't bother to read what you found.

Get insurance and don't worry about it.
The only reason I got insurance on this phone was purely because of the screen.

Huh? I've called with my old DROID and got a replacement because the colors were messed up on the screen slightly.
Also I got a replacement before because the headphone jack had some static.
Never had an issue. They also cover water, physical and and if it gets stolen so yeah... Not encouraging anything but it is really easy to get a replacement.

What he's saying is for a screen defect the warranty would cover it. So there's no need to pay for insurance.

Thanks for the responses, except for the douche response from no sympathy. If you dont like stupid questions, dont respond with stupid answers, just skip it. Glad you were able to rage anonymously at a stranger. I asked because i have read that after 1000 hours, the screen degrades. If you do the math, that means the screen starts going out in 7 months. Since this is my first screen that is a amoled, i wanted someone with experience with them. I was asking for personal experience, and it was helpful. Thanks guys.

You created two threads for the same purpose. Also if that is what you were worried about why didn't you say that in the first place about the 1000 hours etc.
Sorry that I tried to help you the first time only for you too make a second thread asking pretty much the same thing.
Also I can be far worse than this and have been. I am sorry I tried to help you since you don't seem to want help.

First, this is my one, and only thread about this. Second, the lightning bolt post isnt mine. It is the reason I asked. Third, I did read multiple articles, and threads, and the answers were all over the place. And fourth, I really like your roms on the incredible, thanks for building them. I think you got confused on the posts, and could see how you could get annoyed at someone spamming the same question, unfortunately, you got confused. I will give you the sympathy that you refuse to give others. Kinda hard to go all hard assed when apparently, you cant read the posts correctly to begin with. Why don't yoy take your own advice, and read before making comments. Here is where you posted in the thread you thought I created

And this is the thread I created. See different people. Similar question, but not really. I knew about the defect, just wondered how wide spread, and bad it really was. Really, not trying to be a little $#! T about it, but your attitude sucks. The reason there is a Q n A is for stuff like this. Hope we end up on the same side of the next arguement.

That's weird. My xda app is showing the same avatar for you and the other guy but it is different on the computer. I went off of that. Sorry! Lol. Fooled by the xda app. Thought you were just posting twice because you didn't like my answer before since these threads are so close and your post in this one mimics what I told the other guy too do.
I generally do have a bad attitude on here. Mostly because when I first joined this site people actually read first and read second and read third before doing things. Now people just either post questions without reading or post issues because they didn't read first. I generally give the person crap but still answer their questions. Could be worse and I could just be a jerk.
Also I don't think I ever made ROMs for the incredible?! If I did go me for doing something I didn't know I did! Haha. I've only released two ROMs and they were for the GSIII back when it first came out and no one could figure out how to deodexe them correctly and I decided I was going to learn how to dev and do it myself. That also led me to get a shorter fuse as if I could teach myself as much as I did, then why should everyone else always get a free ride and just be handed answers.
I also am man enough to admit that I got you mixed up with someone else here. Still doesn't mean you should have resulted in calling me names as to be fair we really didn't need a second thread with this as you could have asked your question in the other thread first.

Just thought I'd put this out there. You WILL get AMOLED burn out just by using the phone. The second the display goes on for the first time the organic substrate is already starting to decay, it's just the way it is.
The catch is how long before you start seeing burned in app drawer rings and notification bars all over grey/white images. I'd expect if you use the phone for hours a day with the brightness up pretty high you could start seeing the burn outs in less than 6 months. They claim something like 15,000 hours of lifetime for the blue pixels, which have it the worst of the 3 colors, but people report seeing them in less than 500 hours. Brightness definitely has a huge impact as running with max brightness will result in much faster burn out.
Does it really matter though is another question. Before anyone flames my post and the information I provided as saying "well you're gonna get a new phone in less than a year anyway" just know that not everyone does that. Some people like to ride out their phones until they really feel it's time to get a new one. With this device I'd anticipate people riding it for at least 3 years and being very satisfied even at the end of the third year, with the performance. That means for those people holding onto this device they should be aware of ways to minimize burn out so they don't end up with eyesores 12 months into ownership.
As for the black spots, yep. Every single AMOLED device I've ever owned (around 4) they've all had it. Very disappointed that my Note 2 has them. Not all of them do but I wouldn't be able to tell you the odds of finding one without the splotches. Just know that I can certifiably say I know what to look for when searching for these spots and my brother's Note 2 100% does not have them. At all. Yeah, I am jelly.
So if you want to play the return/exchange game trying to get a display without the splotches good luck to you. Me personally? My display has 0 dead/stuck pixels. This to me is worth far more than a display with no spots but dead/stuck pixels. And that is my 2 pennies.

I have a minor black streak that is only visible when the screen is displaying a black image. Even a small amount of color on the back background makes it difficult to spot.

My personal best battery life setup

Okay I'm just posting this to help some of you out. Has your battery life been subpar compared to mm? Try this it gave me the best battery life I've ever seen. Even on mm
Btw bad is like 4hrs sot good is like 4.7-5 hrs and excellent is 6+
Steps:
1. Flash pure nexus the January 21 build only, the one after had worse battery
2. Flash Franco kernel
3. Get ex kernel manager
4. Get wingoku battery profile I'll attach it to this forum credits go to the owner not me obviously
5. Apply the profile in the ex kernel manager
Wait 2 days and hopefully your battery will be a lot better. That's my current set up.
I attached a screen shot of me getting 6hrs sot
Oh if you see a theme it's the "dna dark" substratum theme it's amazing I highly recommend you get it it's also free!!! 10/10
This fix shut down problems?
I use Chads uber ROM and faster angler kernel and the same governor profile
Try Moonpie MIUI8 Rom, based on MM, battery life is epic, i almost touched 8 hrs without greenify and without any tweaks.

Sot is useless. You might be getting 6 hours because you have brightness all the way down or might be in an area where your service is always full bars and so on. Many factors go into it.

But to be honest, logical, and to the point, he is right. SOT is meaningless. Either battery life improved or not solely for you. I can turn data off, brightness down and just read on a PDF for hours straight right after unplugging and get 9 hours SOT on stock. Should I write that the 6P gets 9 hrs SOT? It varies immensely based on usage, you'll be surprised how much variability there is.
It's like a car, you can get 30mpg or 10 mpg for the SAME car. In terms of "tweaks", there has been build.prop "tweaks" that supposedly improved battery life for some people only to find out that the build.prop tweaks were actually not working. Placebo is powerful. Same thing for overclocking for some devices that actually never worked but people swore up and down that they felt the speed difference before the dev announced that the overclocking never worked.

There's no reason for you to take it so personal. I'm basically sharing my experience with Android phones since Android's induction. Being uncivilized and spewing out names isn't helping your argument.
Involving SOT in battery talk is useless as it has no measurement for improvement for others. You're basically saying that you DOUBLED your battery life and implied that everyone should expect 2x battery life. No, that's not how it works. You either have increased battery life, or not which is what you should say. But involving metrics like SOT is useless. You don't install an intake on a car and say " I have 40mpg on my car now"....
I emphasized on placebo because there were lots of "tweaks" back in the day that did absolutely nothing that lots of people actually fell for. Just making you aware of that....Now if you want to continue going back and forth with name-calling and attacks on other users instead of focusing on the actual argument, this isn't the place for it.

Great, then you can appreciate "my personal" input as well. I was merely trying to get you out of the "SOT" before others give you an explanation as to why it's worthless. You can either understand it or not, but if you want to take the low road and resort to insults and abnoxious "LMAOS", then that's your prerogative. Insulting others trying to help you understand and name-calling will in fact get you banned. Just FYI.

I'm sorry, but if I see someone that misunderstands something or is wrong, I feel obligated to either help or correct the person. In this case, I was attempting to help him understand the significance of SOT since he used that as a measurement in the OP (ex: 4hrs SOT is bad) before people start thinking that something is wrong with their phone because they are getting 4hrs SOT. Purpose was not to attack him, say he's wrong, or whatever else you, or he, may think.
The same way he's trying to help people is the same way I'm trying to help him, which made the thread way more "eventful" than it needed to be for misunderstanding the point I was conveying.
