I intend to put an HDMI audio splitter in my car, and to use my phone as a media source (later transitioning to a tablet, but that's down the road). What I want to know is if an MHL to HDMI adapter leaves the audio stream intact and untouched - in other words, no dithering, equalizing, or sampling performed.
Furthermore, I assume the phone will output music through MHL with no issues. Is this the case?
The HDMI stripper I'm looking at is here, for reference: http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/cables/atlona-tech-at-hd570
Any help or knowledge would be appreciated!
I've never seen raw audio come out of the MHL port.
e.g. you can't do AC3 passthrough or anything like that, at least not any time I have tried. So no 5.1 audio

Is this still the case? If so, how does one get surround over mhl?

I can't really believe that this issue hasn't been solved.
My setup:
Samsung S4 (i9505)
third party MHL adapter (with USB power) (package says, it is able to transmit a digital surround sound stream)
HDMI to HDMI + optical splitter (verified to be able to output surround sound)
The optical cable connects to my surround-pre-amp, hdmi to the TV.
I was not able to find a combination of android player / settings / cable configuration to get the AC3 or DTS stream through the MHL port. I also cannot find any information on this anywhere.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

I've just received the MHL adapter and am excited to be able to use my monitor to display the phone's screen. But my monitor does not have a audio output, so the audio through the HDMI cannot be played. I've rooted and am on the Cognition 1.07 ROM, So is there a hack to route the audio through the 3.5 mm jack when sending the video through the HDMI using the MHL adapter?
Thanks guys,
Did you work out a way to do this? I am thinking of buying an MHL adapter but like you my display does not have sound.
I need to know an answer to this! My monitor doesnt have speakers and theres no way for me to hear the video!
My Dell monitor has 5.1 channel analog 3.5mm sockets at the back for HDMI audio output.
on my SG2 I still can use the audio jack for audio output (headset or just go into any amplifier-audio_in, or any computer etc....) when I use the HDMI cable for TV.
Hey RbbChan what ROM are you using?

Hey how did you get it to work? Which ROM and Kernel?
Same problem for me guys...that's a very unpleasent situation!
It can be solved via software though, I'm pretty sure because there is a lag of about half a second between the audio disappears after I connect the HDMI cable, it can't be hardware only.
Is there a place in this forum when we can ask developers to try and find a fix in their custom ROMs ?
I tried this and it worked (audio through my headphones) but the audio also came out through my TV.
VillianRom 2.42/Ninphetamine Kernel.

Muting the TV ought to do the trick,no?
Thats always a viable option.

Thank you Killer Bee! It works!!!
I know this thread is a couple of months old but I just wanted to say this saved me from buying an unnecessary $100+ HDMI audio breakout. The headphone jack fit the bill since my new monitor doesn't have audio output.
I'm having the same issue as OP (no sound through headphone jack on SGSII while MHL adapter plugged in). From the other posts it seems like using VillianRom 2.42/Ninphetamine Kernel would work?
Would any other roms & kernels work?
Thanks
Is there a way to get audio output from this phone via the mini-USB port? I'm thinking of buying a portable DAC/AMP with USB input to bypass the DAC on the phone. Is this possible?
Don't believe this is possible. The host OS drivers must be supported.

Yes, but it's analog audio so you can't bypass the DAC. However it may be line-level audio that is different (better? worse? Not sure) than the headphone jack.
Somewhere in either General or Accessories there's a HOWTO on making your own "dock" audio cable. This will give you analog output from the MiniUSB port by making the phone think it's in a car dock, which makes it change USB D+ and D- into analog L/R audio.
The link Entropy is referring to is this:

EDIT and also from a quote in that thread:

I'm 95% certain digital audio out is not possible, except maybe for MHL/HDMI audio output via the MHL adapter.
There just aren't any provisions for it.

thanks for the info. I'm reading through that and I don't think that'll work for me. Basically I just want something I can slap into my pocket while at the gym to get better sound out of this phone. I guess a simple line-out is going to have to do and just snag an AMP only.
Would the USB OTG be a viable option for this? Just a thought...
Thanks again for the help!
let me ask you this...is there a clean way to get a "line-out" from the Galaxy S2 perhaps from the USB port (as an analog signal). I have been eye-balling the Ray Samuels Hornet as my portable amp for the Galaxy S2 and I'd like to get the best sound possible out of this phone.

Hi guys, I read these forums occasionally, but this is my first time to post. My problem is (seemingly) pretty straightforward.
When I connect my Droid RAZR MAXX or ASUS Transformer to my HD monitor, the video displays fine, but there is no sound. I suspect this is because the monitor does not have any speakers, but I was hoping there would be a way to just let the audio play from the device. That's what my laptop does when connected via VGA (which might not support audio anyway; I don't know a lot about the different inputs/outputs).
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
arnax
VGA does not support audio. Ive never done any of these but maybe they will work. Get a hdmi to VGA adaptar and then use an auxillary cord to hook up to monitor. Plug a headset into your phone to hear it that way. Or the simple solution get speakers for ur monitor.
As far as I know there is no way to use hdmi without the audio being played through the hdmi. Not just for phones but everything hdmi.
Thanks, I tried using headphones with my phone and that worked, so I suppose hooking up speakers to it should work too. I don't believe my monitor has a way to hook up speakers directly unfortunately...
Hi,
I got my note 3 the other week and just got the samsung smart dock today.
The note 3 is brilliant so far and as far Im aware it is MHL 2.0 compliant.
I plugged in the smart dock last night into my reciever and I got the screen mirrored onto my tv however I am getting no sound at all
However If I plug the hdmi cable into my TVs hdmi input I get both video and sound (the problem being that my tv has an issue with DT, DTS HD etc. All I can do is pass a dolby digital signal to my reciever via optical cable.
The reciever works perfectly fine for HDMI out from my htpc at the mometn (and to confirm it wasnt the settings on the reciever I ever plugged the dock into the same input as the HTPC (replaced it temporarily) Still no sound.
Does anyone have any idea why the audio works through my tv and not the reciever? (my reciever is a denon 1910, my tv is a Samsung B650) As far Im aware audio over hdmi is a standard and if anything the recoever should be able to work better as it can decode more formats.
The other thing I noticed was that I am getting 1080p at 30hz, does this make the smart dock only MHL1.0 compliant?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
go to settings / accessory and then either click or unclick the audio out mode. then try.

Thanks for the fast responce. This does tie into what I have read elsewhere unfortunately it didnt seem to have an impact for me I have tried both ticked and unticked. my reciever still gets no audio.
(My TV only recieves audio if it is unticked)
In the same place there is an option for HDMI surround or stereo, have you tried changing that around?

Unfortunately yes. Maybe I havent tried all combinations of the 2 options though.
I think I tried unticked stereo, surround unticked and surround ticked. I can try messing with these again tonight to see if it has any affect.
Is there any reason these settings would need changing for plugging into a reciever vs plugging into my tv directly? I would have thought if it works for one it should work for the other.
Thanks again for the help
no luck, tried all combinations of both of those settings. no sound at all coming out of my reciever

Sorry, thought I had already replied to this. Yes, this is just the note 2 dock. as I assumed it is just using th MHL standard I believe the note 3 should be just as compatable as the Note 2
Note 3 smart dock
The note 2 smart dock worked with my note 3 with sound? See here:
youtube.com/watch?v=lWN43pnkg0s
This is a long shot but on your note 3, go to settings>general>accessory>check off "Audio output mode" (Use external speakers when device is docked).
See if that works?

Also, I know this is silly but try unlpugging the smart dock power source and then replugging it in the back of the dock. Someone had issues where reconnecting the power source on back of the dock helped resolve some recognition issue with the usb. Long shot but worth a try.
Hi guys,
I'm looking to purchase a new mobile soon and liked the idea of the 120fps video possibility the z2 brings. However one of the main things I will be using the phone for is as my car's audio system. It takes a digital signal via coaxial. I have a hdmi to coaxial converter to strip out the audio signal and I know it is possible to purchase a miniusb to hdmi cable for the phone which I can then power off the car battery with a 12v to 5v converter - however does the phone itself support doing this? Is there any apps that will output the digital file without processing it through the phones dac? Is there a limit to the bit quality of the sample e.g. 44.
Many thanks for any help with this - sorry if it's a dumb question but I didn't manage to find the answer when I browsed the forum.
If there is an alternative phone that would be better for this please recommend away! (I briefly looked at the Meizu quad core phone but the phone itself doesn't have much support and if I'm correct the newer versions of android may support what I am trying to achieve?)
Cheers!
Darren
the stock rom/kernel comes with native support for USB audio. I've used it with a fiio e17 which has an SPDIF out

Thank you for the reply! What are you using cable wise? Mini usb to hdmi to a splitter then to s/pdif input into the fiio e17? Did you have to change the options to output digital audio? Does it bypass the equalizer/dac in the phone?
Many thanks!
