commtiva n700 may be bricked? - Viewsonic ViewPad 7 & Variants

hey guys,
i recently bought a commtiva N700 off ebay from a guy that said his son had entered the pin too many times and now the screen wont turn on.
thinking i may be able to grab a quick bargain i bought it for £30,,
i got it this morn and the device certainly seems to be bricked. when i press any and all combinations of buttons, nothing happens, when i plug it in to the USB cable, the led goes solid red and then flashes red at me..
have i just bought an expensive paper weight or is there anyway of reviving the tablet from death??
thanks!!

So this is def a brick now then? What does the flashing red led mean? Any ideas?

Hmmm, this topic really doesn't belong here - more of a general question ... perhaps a MOD want to move/merge or close this thread as I just pointed another poster in the "general" direction on where to start troubleshooting - might have to use the flash the factory ROM again with their provided utility to stock condition, without root - assuming it's NOT a hardware issue & not covered by factory warranty (or expired already)
For newbies not familiar with Android OS and various how-to's, it's dangerous to try DIY fixes as it will truely turn a "soft" brick into a dead paper-weight brick that's unrecoverable.
My suggestion for where to start is linked here - please post your followup questions & findings in the other thread, it's easier for me to read - for everyone to share AND learn, and other newbies to search for possible solutions as they discover this sub-forum, thanks in advance -

This is specific to the Vpad 7 only or its generic/off-brand equivalent, not other similar Viewsonic devices that I do NOT own nor familiar with.

Many thanks for your help.. i wasn't sure if the general area was the place to use or not.. in general I find the Dev area has more knowledgable and savvy users, although i can understand why they'd get annoyed with Plebs like me trying to answers to inane questions..
i'll follow up with your advice and if a friendly mod could either move or kill this thread it would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks, B.Jay for moving -
Sirgeekalot, I posted a few thoughts on what you folks might want to try next in the other post in this section - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359605
It take time to digest all these info & to try it out, but do let us know what you come up with, if any - so that the rest of us can point out the directions on what possibly steps to take next. Good luck & please try to post in the "other" post next as it will be far easier for everyone - it's a rather small circle of users around the world, compared to iPads and Samsung Galaxy's, etc. so the more we share together, the more we learn ... Thanks & believe me, I understand & share in your frustration in having an expensive "brick" in hand.

noob want to upgrade HELP PLEASE????

Hello All,
I was directed to this site by my "Verizon guy". I have a new xv6800. Dudes/dudettes, this phone is awesome. I was told that you could upgrade to different software and the phone would actually close apps, use less battery, have louder soundes, etc. I was told to look fo Dutty's Rom, but I guess this doesn't exist for this phone yet. I was wondering a few things. One could someone spend the time to "hold my hand" and walk me through upgrading...two reasons. One I don't want to kill my phone and two from reading other posts, it seems like you all are very knowledgeable. I may be able to offer money if this would motivate someone. (I know it may take time and effort). I have been using google and other threads to try and install bootloaders, etc but with no luck. I hope that someone is willing to help. This thread would also become a good step-by-step guide for all noobs.
Thank You All in Advance

Here are your instructions:
1. Look at the top of this page and click "Titan Upgrading etc"
2. Click on the very first thread that says "NEED HELP??? NEW??? Read the XDA-Wiki for the Titan before posting"
That's it.

Without the fundamental knowledge you will tank your phone. The questions you ask before you read are on a different level than those after you finish the wiki.
You may have a slightly different situation that may not be correctly answered by the first person that responds to your thread.
Read and then ask and we will be there for you.

So I just found out I am getting the G tablet!!!

For Father's day --- lucky me!!!
Good price also I think? 289.99
http://www.buy.com/prod/viewsonic-g...ra-2-1ghz-512mb-ddr2/q/loc/111/219101228.html
Anyway I just looked in this sub forum and have not read anything in depth yet. I have practice flashing roms on my phone so I am not a complete newbie...but not far..
So is the instructions in the flash thread still the one to follow exactly as written? I only ask because I saw somewhere that the G tablet has been updated and some roms are no longer good (not sure if this is true?)
Anyway I will be getting this tablet soon and want to flash it before I even use it (with at least gingerbread if not honeycomb), so any tips or hints would be appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance!!!

Tip 1: Post General (like this) or Q/A (like "how do I...?") posts in the General or Q/A forums, not in THIS forum, which (as you can see by the Stickied Posts you passed over) is just for developers to post about their things, and for you to give them feedback in their threads.
Tip 2: be sure you understand the whole 1.1 vs 1.2 bootloader thing
Tip 3: have fun!
Sorry for posting in the wrong place. I am so used to the phone section (which is where we post these questions) that I just assumed it was the same setup.
Can a Mod please move this thread to the correct forum please?
thanks
I don't think there is another tab with as much interests as this one.
That said I hope you know about the screen viewing angle issue. I haven't really noticed it but some people have cried bloody murder.

[Q] Advice not given

Okay. I posted my first ever question/request for advice the other day and, despite 79 views, I have had no response. Perhaps it was too dull for those who are more accomplished with all things Android and everybody assumed that somebody else would answer.
Perhaps within the morass of information on these forums the answers are already out there. Maybe, but who knows. In other forums people tend to at least say - look there for answers - and post a link to another thread. But, it has been Christmas and I guess we are all pretty busy this time of year - Merry Christmas to all by the way
So, I thought I would re-shape my question/needs here.
Could anybody give me, or at least point me in the direction of, a glossary of terms type of thing?
I need to know things like what does 'radio' mean? How does it relate to the 'flashing' process' , And any other terms which people take for granted as being blindingly obvious, but which may not be to those of us very inexperienced. This forum can be quite daunting, but still, enquiring minds wanna know
Any help, again, appreciated.

I would've loved to answer but perhaps you need to be more specific on what you want to be answered
you said you wanted to have 2.3.5 on ur DHD,but that doesn't tell anyone what you are asking for,if you are asking us to find a ROM for you,or how to flash a recovery first,or how to flash the ROM !
You should have to provide us more specific data, phone, model, rooted or stock, etc. It is normal that why you don't get replies.

HI, and thank you. Also apologies for my woolly question. And this is kind of my problem. When new to this even the questions I want answered are not always asked correctly. I was hoping to find a ROM for my Desire HD which has Sense 3.0. I have Gingerbread on the phone currently with Sense 2.1.
To be completely humble and honest, which I find to be the best way in almost all cases, I must say that I am not even sure what "how to flash a recovery" means, or "how to flash the ROM".
So, as you see, I am really new to this and feeling my way around. I am a quick learner though so I really just need bringing up to speed on a few of the basics and then I am sure I will be able to research my way around.
Anyway, thank you for your kind reply. I wasn't trying to be shirty with my post. I meant what I said - it is Christmas and I am sure people look in over the holidays but it is a busy time for everybody. I hope I have not caused offence.

Please read before you do anything at all. From your posts it is plain you are very new to Modding so it is very important you understand what your doing as it void your warrenty and if done wrong can brick your device. Start with the stickies in the DHD section and read those a couple of times. Then check the Q&A and read there as well.
As mentioned, read the stickies in your section, there should be a lot of information there. In my device's subfora, there are great stickies chocked full of information. If we had the same device, I'd post some links for you. There's also a glossary of sorts stickied in the Thunderbolt section. Not everything in it will apply to your device but it may help with some general terms.
Before I even rooted my device, I read all of the stickies and recommended links. I then read over the Q&A and general subfora just to get a feel for it. What I read didn't make a lot of sense at the time, but later I remembered it and it made more sense. I then rooted my device, then read and read and read before flashing my first rom (CM6 - it was a while back).
It's a process, and the more you read the more you'll understand, until eventually you can start answering some of the questions that go unanswered. Just give it time... and make sure that you know exactly what you're doing - and why - before you jump in to something.
Good luck!

Hi there Zendel.
Apologies for the lateness of this reply. Been a busy day. I wanted to say thanks for the advice and to also fill in a couple of blanks, if I may.
You are quite correct, I am very new to modding and my only fear is buggering it up, as we say in Lancashire lol. However, it has already been rooted by a friend who took me through the process over the phone some months ago.
When I first got the phone it was with Orange and had all that Orange junk and splash screen etc. Hence, my friend talked me through rooting and installing a standard factory ROM. It was a lot to take in and, at the time, I didn't make any notes along the way, which would have helped me now - hindsight is a wonderful thing, as they say.
More recently he pointed me at a link to a RUU (is that right?) so that I could upgrade from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3.3 with Sense 2.1 - so, in a nutshell, void warranty is no longer a concern
I have taken a look at some of the stickies, though I have not studied them intensely at this point. I will spend more time looking however and come back, perhaps, with more questions - or at least more relevant questions I should hope

Rooting for Newbies

There are several threads and even a sticky you'd have to be blind or flat lazy to miss to not have seen it with ALL the info you need
Please note the word "Newbie". I have indeed found many threads and pages, all of which dive into the subject as if it's second nature. I don't even know what a "Sticky" IS! I'm an intelligent person, PC literate, perfectly capable of rooting a phone, I'm sure. But I have utterly no experience of doing so. I'm sure there are many people in my position, and I'm simply looking for a user-friendly starting point. Thanks.

Hey - I was lost when I first started to flash my first rom. I found a number of different sources which all helped in their own little way. I'll gladly talk you through each step. Oh dear, foiled at the first hurdle! My phone's build number is 15609. Theunlockr.com sends me to
http://android.modaco.com/topic/316229-19aug-streak-21-downloads-how-tos-rom-superboot-recovery/
where I can't find any reference to that build number, therefore can't find the necessary Superboot files.
Help? ... !
Your first problem is trying to use Superboot. You don't need to, and it's not recommended to use it in any event. All you need to know is how to use Fastboot properly.
The second problem is that you're trying to do this cold. For a bit of an assist, try looking in the apparently little known Wiki on the site here. There is a flashing guide for the Dell Streak there and one very critical piece of advice on it that is a must read, though duplicated on some of the threads.
I am going to recommend that you spend some time reading up before attempting to flash the Streak, or you will very likely end up with a nice, shiny, and very expensive paperweight.
OK, for the moment I'm going to be content with a factory reset and no root.
I think if one of you experts out there fancies a little project it would be to write exactly what the sarcastic "No spoonfeeding here" signature doesn't want; a "Rooting for beginners" guide.
I'm told I don't need to use Superboot, but I thought Superboot WAS rooting. Truth be told all I wanted to do was to be able to uninstall unwanted pre-loaded software on my Streak, not much more than that.
Despite kind people's encouraging words that rooting is now very straightforward, Strephon's timely warning reminds me that it isn't. I think I'll take the easy way out and wait until someone IS prepared to spoon feed me!
Sticky posts are set up so that they never disappear from page 1 of the forum you are reading. They are also so that critical information, such as how to root the streak without bricking it, is easy to find. Rooting the Streak is quite easy; far easier than other devices. Yet it's still possible to brick it if you do not read up on what you're supposed to be doing.
If you were truly a noob I'd have given you a link. However, you have been with the site a while, and thus you should by now know the rules, especially rule 1: search before you post. Thus, no spoonfeeding for you. Use the search engine and the stickies. That is why we have them.
Duly ticked off! Many thanks for the help and advice, I'll start reading...
Cheers,
Aidan

My bad, i should have mentioned that ive already used the notorious search button, which apparently leads to ALOT of DIFFERENT threads about the same topic, hence my question, "which is the ULTIMATE thread for noobs"
Im sorry, but I dont know which is the right thread and not, if i did, i wouldnt bother asking that question, would i?
In theory its just downloading a file, unzip it, connect phone to computer and execute, right?
http://youtu.be/vhSSmdqAXRM
However, after a long life, my experience is that it would be convenient to know more than just the action itself, cause there are always traps, which isnt always mentioned or described in those threads cause they take for granted that people who want to do this already know everything about it.
If there are risks involved doing it, like choosing the wrong vers, having the wrong bb etc, i want to learn and be aware of it BEFORE i attempt or even consider doing it, cause i dont want to brick my phone.
Unfortunatelly i have a daytime job, and not much time left for reading through endless threads and comments, thats why i addressed the experienced members in here that already know what im looking for, and can in his, or her way save me for reading all the stuff that i dont need to know, or are irrelevant in my case
Btw, i got a GT-I9300 with 4.1.2 - BB I9300XXEMB5
Dont mean to be rude, but sharing is caring, and i would love to help others in the same way sharing my knowledge, if i could, instead of just inform people about the search function... its getting old.
Im a little tired of all the wise guys in here sitting on their horses pretending to know everything, but isnt willing to help or share in a nice way, instead just being arrogant in a patronizing way.
I can assure you, if you threat people more friendly, people will show more gratefulness in return, and if you dont, u get ungrateful speaches like this in return instead
A good atmosphere is much easier to achieve if you include people, rather than exclude them....
Hope i dint offend you with my "speach"

there is no "right thread" and they are all full of various things you could do with knowing. there are a lot of people who come here expecting a quick and easy "which is the ULTIMATE thread for noobs" - there is none, they're all relivant.

I agree with everything you said here, which is why you should read the threads, they're all relivant
Unfortunatelly i have a daytime job, and not much time left for reading through endless threads and comments, that's why i addressed the experienced members in here that already know what im looking for, and can in his, or her way save me for reading all the stuff that i dont need to know, or are irrelevant in my case
unfortunately, i also have a day time job (oh what a chore hey?) most of the people, including the devs and the more experienced members here have jobs too, i doubt they all came here with instant vast knowledge on how to flash and all of it's woes, i also doubt they just came here and asked someone to pick out all the best bit for them. I bet they read all the posts, dammit they made the posts, the roms you will use, the rooting procedures. everything on here - for you to say "save me for reading all the stuff that i dont need to know, or are irrelevant in my case" is just being ignorant, as i've said everything is relevant, it seems that you want to know everything and share the knowledge but don't want to read about it - it's the only way to learn

how do you expect to share knowledge, if you don't read all the info and just get told what you want to know?
Im a little tired of all the wise guys in here sitting on their horses pretending to know everything, but isnt willing to help or share in a nice way, instead just being arrogant in a patronizing way.
i'm pretty sure all the "wise guys" on here are fed up with noobs (I by the way, still consider myself a noob) coming here and asking for things to be given to them on a silver platter! we/they are not being patronizing or arrogant, they are simply telling you to do your research - just like they did.
I can assure you, if you threat people more friendly, people will show more gratefulness in return, and if you dont, u get ungrateful speaches like this in return instead
i think you meant treat not "threat" oh and thanks for the assurance . i'm sorry you are being ungrateful just because someone (I) told you to read up! - it's probably not the best way to get help when you refer to the members as "wise guys" "sitting on their high horses" "being arrogant in a patronizing way" - that's how you portray friendliness?
A good atmosphere is much easier to achieve if you include people, rather than exclude them....
Hope i dint offend you with my "speach"

not offended at all :crying:
I'm sorry you feel the way you do, but i'm not being an A$$ - i'm telling you that what you need to know is all in those posts.
i'm done
Of course mate, i didnt expect you to read for me, lol, but i was hoping to get pointed to the "most relevant" thread about what i wanted to know, and probably one single thread would be more than enough info to read up.
Forums like these are getting out of proportions after some years, and sometimes impossible to navigate through, and why shouldnt i be allowed to ask for help or shortcuts? Who made up that rule?
If i had been here two years longer than you, doesnt mean i need to hold back any info cause i had to learn everything the hard way, instead i would gladly at least guide people in the right direction.
Ive been in allot of different forums over the past years with different kinds if subjects, but never a forum like this where people are so grumpy and very little welcoming and including, there are no "welcome to the forum buddy, i will try my best to guide you in the right direction"
Eventually one will find the way on its own, but sometimes its nice to be lead onto the right path.
I totally agree, and i ALWAYS try to find the answers im looking for through the search function before i ask, but when i stall, i post in a friendly and humble way like i tried to in my original post.
If all the answers to your questions was to read through every topic, there would be vert little activity in here, but then again, maybe easier to browse through.
A forum where its "stupid" or not "allowed" to ask questions is to me more equal to Google... yea, Google is your friend, but sometimes you wish to know more spesific things...
And thanks to you too, im not rooting my phone, cause im not able to find the proper info im looking for... and gives me one more reason to get back to my "boring" Iphone again... but hey, life goes on anyway... :good:
they have a link for the rooting guides for the noobs at the section list

I don't want to sound arrogant or anything and I am always happy to help, but if you do not find the guide for rooting... it seems you didn't follow the advice given to you in the posts earlier.
That are stickies in the general section which will help you to understand the basics of rooting, flashing etc. And in addition you have tons of YouTube guides out there.
Hence I wish you good luck, anything is out there for you to learn and share later on, just a little bit of effort is needed to get there.
Btw here you go again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927113 and even at the beginning of the q&a section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2148708

I am going to add that you should pick the method that you actually understand the instructions for . That goes for all other flashes updates etc .
If you don't understand then you will probably be joining the help i bricked my phone club .

Finally someone who understands where im going with this, thanks... And that was the intention with this thread, to get a pointer to the one or maybe two or even three or four threads that covers the most essential things... I dont know whats essential or not (yet), i can surely read dozens of how to's but i still dont know if its the right solution for my phone and the vers i have.
A bit like jb an iphone, just download this and do that... "oh, you had that bb vers" "thats the only one thats not compatible with this vers" sorry u bricked your phone.
But it feels like its just, if u got the balls, or know everything about it, just do it, or everything is at your own risk, its a hit or miss thing...
I dont think i will root my phone after all, cause there are so much info on how to do it that differs from eachother, and nobody cant seem to tell which thread is the right one for MY phone...
But thanks anyway, to those that actually tried to point me there...

Sorry you are wrong a day or two actually reading the basic faqs and guides is the starting point that you don't want to start with .This is after all a developers forum that has no place spoon feeding those that dont want to learn .
Their is no best the basic stickied faqs and guides all say the same as do the instructions for each method .
The confusion lies in answers to posts like this where xx say this way is best and b say no use x .Unfortunately due to multiple same posts it is not that easy to navigate the forum but the answer to that is for noobs to bother reading the facts and guides before posting repetitive questions .
I would in your case read the instructions and use CF Root method .

Look for cf auto root if you don't want recovery to be stock. Use cf root if u want the custom recovery. To all advanced user out there, correct me if I'm wrong.

Haha. Can't edit with xda app. What I really mean is, cf auto root will not change your recovery. Accidentally put "dont" there.
