Can not make nandroid backup arghh - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, my I'm on foxhound sniperwolf rom and my phone won't boot up I've cleared cache an dalvik also reflashed the same rom but to no avail.
I tried to make a backup from cwm in recovery but when backing up data, it says error. Should I just get a new memory card and backup my data because I haven't backed my apps more importantly my texts aren't. Anyway to make a backup of texts or something in cwm.
Please someone help me. Thankyou for any replies.

With your information, I think Nobody can guess what is blocking your phone to boot up..also what is causing the CWM to rject backing up,
if your internal memory han not been damaged, you may get the problem solved by trying different ways, like flshing another supporting Custom Kernel+CWM with from ODIN....

[Q] Wipe options for flashing new ROM - what gets wiped?

Hi
I've read alot of the threads around but cant seem to find specific info that I require. I've already rooted and flashed Litening ROM 1.5, however I want to try other ROMS and read its best to wipe before some of them.
Now most of the instructions say to boot into CWM and do a data/cache wipe, can anyone tell em what does this wipe exactly?
From what I can understand the 16gb is partitioned into the "sd card" and the storage? When looking through Windows Explorer only the larger (I believe sd card" partition shows up, with download folder, CWM back ups, music, camera images etc.
Does this get wiped, or is it just apps/personalisation of the phone? I've got titanium backup and backed up all data + user data etc which can be restored, but I just want to check that music/camera images etc won't go!
Hope its not too stupid a question, cheers for any info!
My understanding is: wipe = factory reset. I hope I'm right with that assumption.

Wipes....
I got caught once when I installed cognition for the first time. The installation somehow did wipe my internal sdcard with all my stuff on it. (Although I do have backups on my PC) So it was just a pain but not serious.
But the odd thing is that all the following upgrades of the rom did not wipe the sdcard, so DG might have change the way it does the wipes.
Also if you do a factory reset either via keypad on phone with the *#... it will wipe the sdcard.
So one needs to be carefull and make sure that we have backups of the stuff we want to keep.
I find this annoying making the 16GB card internal sdcard almost behaive as temporary storage ruther than permanent.
So watch out.
thanks for both replies! still not 100% sure though, does anyone know 100% what the CWM wipe options actually wipe?
thanks again!
How about "everything"? It sets your phone back to the way it was when you first started it.

[Q] Crash and boot loop out of nowhere

Hey guys,
My AT&T Galaxy SII has been working fine on UnNamed 2.2.1 for probably 9 months or more, but I just ran into a weird issue today. After sending a text to someone and hitting the on/off button to turn the screen off, the phone restarted, and now refuses to boot past the Samsung screen. It'll stay on it for 5-10 seconds, go black for a few seconds, and repeat.
I can get into recovery, tried wiping cache, dalvik cache, fix permissions, and it still does the same thing. Fix permissions took quite a while and didn't work the first time. Or I just got impatient. But it worked the second time and didn't fix anything.
Anyway, I mounted the SD to copy my data from the internal SD card. I haven't run a Titanium Backup in a while though. I know I can fix the phone with ODIN, but I was just hoping someone might have another idea to avoid this and avoid losing settings, text messages, etc.
Thanks!

If you can get into recovery, does that mean you can complete a nandroid backup? There's actually an option in Titanium Backup to extract apps from a nandroid backup and restore them in Titanium.
My other thought is a handy little app called Nandroid Manager, which you can find on the Play Store. With it you can restore SMS+MMS messages from a nandroid backup. It also has an option for restoring Apps+App Data, but it doesn't seem as stable as the Titanium option.
As for system settings, I'm afraid you're going to have to set those up again after you wipe and reflash your rom.
Speaking of wiping and flashing...have you considered trying a newer rom? Maybe a Jellybean one?
EDIT: By the way, you don't need to use Odin to flash. Just place the rom .zip on your SD card, and wipe and flash using CWM Recovery.
Nice!
That's one option I had never explored in CWM recovery. Duh. Thanks.
Backing up now.
I guess it is about time to update the ROM. Any suggestions for a current super stable one? Takes a while to read through the last 10 or so pages of all the ROM threads to find out what issues people are having or if it's good to go.
Update:
"Error while making a backup image of /data!"
What all will be lost if I don't have that? Boot image, recovery image, and system backed up correctly.
Edit: might have been due to low disk space - removing a bunch of non essential stuff and will retry.

Are you backing up to internal storage or SD card? Make sure you have about 2GB free on the one you're using, and try it again. If that doesn't work, let me know.
As for a good rom, it depends on what you want. As far as Touchwiz Jellybean, I don't think there's much out there better than ShoStock3. I'm an AOSP man myself, so I prefer SlimBean personally. Task's AOKP is also excellent.
I had selected "backup" which I assume after reading your post is to internal storage, not internal SD card. There was 890MB free on it, and now after trying the backup, it's completely full.
When selecting backup to internal SD card, I get a "Can't mount backup path" error, regardless of if I have /sdcard mounted or unmounted.
After deleting some stuff, it now has plenty of space when I choose the regular backup option. We'll see if it works this time.

I've never seen that error before. Hopefully it just works this time.
Even with almost 9 gigs free, it failed to backup /data.
Any other ideas?

Yeah, you can try a different kernel, with a newer version of CWM. I would try the latest AJK. As an ICS/Jellybean kernel, you won't be able to use it to boot up, but you'll still be able to boot into recovery and back up/wipe/flash.
Backing up using AJK now. Hopefully this works.
Thanks for your help so far.
Ok backup was successful. Sweet! So now I can just install a ROM of my choice and restore using TiBu or the other app you mentioned?

Yes. Just make sure you do a full wipe first. Wipe data/factory reset, clear dalvik cache, format /system. Then flash away!

Bricked my sisters S2 with Greenify HELP PLEASE??!

Hi,
I installed Greenify and hibernated some apps and thereafter the phone restarted on its own and is stuck in the RevoltJB logo screen.
I've tried almost everything, from taking the battery out, clearing dalvick cache and flashing the RevoltJB rom again but it's not booting.
I've made a nandroid copy to the Sd Card, system / app, data files say complete but then when it's backing up the music/videos/pics it fails. Not enough memory.
Does that mean that the nandroid backup of system apps (sms/call logs) and my sisters apps/data (whatsapp message history) haven't been backed up?
I also made a internal copy and that seemed to backup everything. Hardly any pics or music on internal memory, plus it had 8gb free.
Does that mean that both the internal and sd card backup the same things?? And can I factory reset and reinstall the RevoltJB rom and then using titanium backup get back her whatsapp messages, her sms and call logs not to mention her stupid level 50 candycrush data?
Please can someone tell me if I've been able to make a successful nandroid backup on either the sd (even if it only backed up system/apps) or internal memory and whether I have any chance of a recovery of her sms, whatsapp and candycrush data.
PS if i reinstall jb rom it won't delete my nandroid backup will it...?
Thank you for your replies in advance. I'm going crazy because she's in tears, so please can someone help me.

You don't need to worry much after making the nandroid backup you can safely wipe data/cache/dalvik cache and reflash the ROM, also along with TB try using the app nandroid manager to restore the apps, call logs, contact's etc. from the previous nandroid backup, and be careful to not format /sdcard partition its where all your data like your music, videos, nandroid backup, and other data is kept.
Hmmm seems you don't use your internal SD card much, and making a backup anywhere is not problem it will be the same thing done twice whether it be in the internal or the external SD card, just try to make a successful backup by freeing up some space, also if you have the patience to read a lot try using Aroma file manager to manually handle the required files like the contact database and stuff, though I would advice a noob to hold off until he's more experienced.

Stop being melodramatic. Bricked phones don't boot. At all
I think you froze a system app....look at @MistahBungle 's signature and read what it says.
Do a factory reset and a ROM reflash. This is the only thing you can do.And yes,all her messages and game data will be gone (you can maybe extract them manually from the Nandroid backup)

[Q] Completely stuck on installing/restoring ROM

Okay so I think I've f***ed up pretty big somehow.
I wanted to install a custom ROM (neatrom) on my phone and followed every guide on how to do so.
I backed up my EFS folder made a titanium backup, Clockwork mod back up, did all my contacts and sms separately and made a copy of all these on my laptop.
I copied the new rom onto my interal sd card, then performed wipedata/factory reset, then wipe cache, wipe davlik cache, format system.
Went to install my new rom and came up with the message (while still in recovery mode) "error status 7, installation aborted"
I thought it best to abandon this therefore as i'm not majorly clued up on flashing ROMs and so went to restore my origional backed up ROM but i'm now getting the message 'no files found' when I select it.
I am now completely stuck and cannot get out of recovery mode even when I take out the battery.
Can someone please help and if you could dim down the really technical stuff it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance!

Hi there. Don't panic! I'm assuming you have either an S2 or S3 since you are trying to run NeatRom. As many details about your phone and what software was on it before you started is always very important. However, this should be easy enough. First thing, if you just need it up and running again ASAP then grab an external SD card, copy the backups from the computer to it and reboot recovery and restore from external.
Status 7 issues often are due to checks in the update script that checks the build.prop of your system to see if it is compatible. If you have wiped /system then it can not read the build.prop so just assumes that it isn't going to work for your safety. So, how to fix that? Follow this guide as a general rule of thumb: http://highonandroid.com/android-roms/how-to-fix-status-7-error-with-cwm-recovery-on-rooted-android/
If you do not have an external SD card, then you will have to get adb up and running so you can push files via adb to the phone. I won't bother explaining this unless it is needed.

[Q] [HELP] Can't find Nandroid Backup to restore

Hello all, I hope you're having a nice day!
Today I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300, and flashed CWM. I then installed Titanium Backup and attempted to back up all my app data, after which I attempted to do a Nandroid backup. After that I flashed CM onto my phone, and tried to get all of my apps and app data back however, it seems I didn't back my app data up properly since not all of my apps have reinstalled and the ones that have seem to not have my data in them. I think this is because when I attempted to backup, the backup directory was set as somewhere in storage by default, so it seems I saved all my app stuff onto the internal storage then wiped it. I tried to do a Nandroid restore, however when I attempt to do so, the message "No Files Found" comes up. I believe this may be because I backed up into internal storage again. Does this mean I've deleted my Nandroid backup as well? Or could I get it back and properly backup my app data?
Thanks for reading, I would really appreciate help.
