Going from G2 to Xperia Mini Pro - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

I have had the G2 for well over a year now and recently felt the need for a change. In my opinion the G2 is one of the best physical keyboard phones of its day; the next phone had some big shoes to fill.
Physical keyboard either slide or candy bar style
GSM based
Hspa speeds
Android 2.3 or later
Decent battery life
Not too big
Faster processor than the G2
After searching diligently for the right fit it came down to these two phones:
Motorola pro plus - candy bar style
Larger body
Bigger battery
1Ghz processor
HSPA
Xperia mini pro - slider style
Compact design
Front facing camera
1Ghz processor
HSPA
The reviews for the Motorola Pro plus on youtube were pretty good but not overwhelmingly so.
The Xperia mini pro had a bit more reviews and seemed to hold up well for different types of users.
So i ordered the Xperia mini pro and can say that i am not disappointed. The size and speed of this phone are what set it apart in the physical qwerty domain. The user interface that Sony has layed on top on Android is quite impressive and very intuitive. If your thinking of getting a new qwerty do not hesitate with this one.

Hei Hermetics
Glad you buy a Mini Pro , but as i can see in your Signature, you owne a NEW mini pro from 2011 (sk17a). This is the Forum for the first mini pro from 2010. (u20). Search for the xperia mini, mini pro,Active,Ray Forum.

Even if its the wrong forum, its a good review (short one).
Actually i'm thinking of getting the Xperia Ray when the price goes down a bit
@Hermetics: Have fun with your new phone!

My thoughts on the minis

I have been using the mini pro now for almost a year. Last week while browsing the net for a cheap contract deal for a relative, I found a very cheap deal for a refurbished x10 which I got. Been using it now With the official SE 2.1 firmware for a few days. All in all, I am quite happy with it. The fact it will get gingerbread soon makes it even better. My experience with it shows me that you can't really have a good smartphone experience (let alone a good android experience) with the minis. The screen size really lets down what could have been a true if somewhat humble champion. I believe a 3 inch screen should be the very minimum for a smartphone that's meant for web browsing, emailing, and running apps. SE made a mistake (one of many in what was a very poorly judged 2010) which they have rectified with the new mini range.
Don't get me wrong, I am sure there are a lot of folks out there who get a lot of joy from their minis. For me personally having used the x10 for a while, the minis just don't give a very good smartphone experience.
Share your thoughts.

I love my mini pro but I will love to try out different android phones like the xperia play since I'm a playstation fan all the way!!!
I might stay with my mini pro and I'm going to save money to buy a tablet or a new phone if my mini pro dies hehe (I hope it doesn't happen soon)

Zodiac, i couldn't agree more! I love my mini (not even pro), but the screen is really to small for sucha good and complete device.
My partner has an SE Arc and from the first time i touched it i was jealous, not only for the specs and speed (my lill mini on miniCM6 keeps up in performance amazingly well....lol...), but the screen looks and works so freaking awesome. I decided instantly i 'need' one too!
On the other hand, since the mini was my first android device, parting from it will be a bit hard, how weird can one be huhh......
Well, you are right about the tiny screen. It is like looking at the internet through a keyhole. My experience is that internet browsing becomes enjoyable at 4 inches and above. My previous phone was an HTC HD2 which in the last few months I used with a Gingerbread nand rom and fell in love with android. And the HD2 was quite a good piece of hardware. But...I dont regret changing for the mini pro. I find that the mini pro's camera is better and also sound quality is better than that of the HD2. I also love the hardware keyboard which I use heavily. Currently Im using the mini pro with the stock SE rom - rooted and with xrec and removed bloatware. Cant really make up my mind about going to a custom rom because I am afraid of loosing camera quality.
All in all the mini pro is a lovely thing. The only thing that really gets on my nerves is the poor battery life.
Soon will be released Xperia Mini with 3" display, and other upgrades. I had my last phone (W810) for 4.5 years. Now the X10 mini will last probably a few more months.
The minis would have been perfect (if such a thing exists) with a 3 inch screen and at the very least HVGA and not QVGA which limits the apps you can download. I mean how stupid is that.

Believe it or not, the mini sound quality is way better then from SE Arc too (when not connected to headphone i mean), but i can't beat the Arc camera though
hi its my first android handset from 2003 , i'm sony ericsson pocessor, in two months back i had vivaz U5i but i loved my X10 mini now with its functionality it's a good phone for me only SE wont upgrade to gingerbread (android 2.3) and i love stock menu's and functionality.
the dialer , the home screen , its icons , i search for anyone has ported any thing from stock rom to MINI CM6 or 7
I had been a Windows Mobile user for the last 5 or so years, but I wanted a change to the "future", to an Android phone, but I didn't want to go all out on a phone I could end up not liking, so last October I went with an x10 Mini Pro, not only is it a cheap device, but it packs quite a punch for it's size, there's pretty much almost nothing I couldn't do on this little one besides flash sites (skyfire with vid plugin solved it), and play a couple of games, (PvZ for eg, all others seem fine, even fps games).
All I can say is that this device gave me such a good impression and introduction to the Android platform that I'm waiting for a SGSII to arrive this week, as this shortie did it's job, for 139€, no contract, I can't really complain of any of the features, and while the screen might be small, well, it's a Mini version so I expected the short screen.

New Xperia Mini For 2012?

Is there going to be a new Xperia mini/pro released this year 2012?
Xperia U is big and Tapioca rumoured to be lower spec. Are Sony not doing a mini this year?
They released the mini's around 8 months. What exactly doesnt suit your needs in the already released mini's? Too low specs? As Sony have stated, they wont be releasing quad core phones this year, due to the fact that apps cant even handle dual core phones properly. So if you want specs, take something bigger, if you want size, get a mini.
The mini specs are just fine. It of course has the heat problem and I just thought there would be some signs of a successor, x10 mini, xperia mini, etc.
The white mini is £99 at carphone warehouse but they have said they are not getting anymore stock of this model in black. Nothing is said of the successor yet, only giant phones from Sony.
The 2010 and 2011 mini/pro smart phones weren't a failure so it's quite probable that Sony will continue the series in 2012. But the 2011 mini/pro phones are still very good so Sony hasn't got a reason to release new phones this early + the 2011 mini/pro phones are getting ICS from Sony. If there will be 2012 mini/pro phones, expect them to the end of 2012.
Xperia Mini came out in August, it is less than a year.
What is wrong with current one, why new?
I think my frends are asking this question bcoz like me they are willing to have a mini with a dual core processor and a product from SONY.i m hugely satisfied with my mini but i also wants a mini from SONY.moreover a HD screen. ;-)

Nope. Already 1 company announced that they managed to insert IPAD 3 resolution (thats like 2***x1***, don't remember exactly) in 1 inch. But ofc, the price is giant.
And completely useless.
I'm also looking forward for the next xperia mini pro. The actual phone works great in terms of speed. The only thing that i wash was better is the screen, which isn't bad but it would be nice to have a 854x480 resolution. And the dual core doesn't hurt either.

Voth larger screen and dual core would be bad for our devices. Two words: Battwry Life.
Hiw long do you expect our 1200mA batteries to last with those specs? So as I said before... Completely useless. If you want a powerfull phine get sometging other than a mini

yeah... dumraden is right... They can't probably fit a bigger battery in such a small form factor... So, dual core would be a disaster.. ;-)

Somthing like the same 1ghz dual core cpu that is in the Xperia U with the hvga res and 3" screen of the mini. Also make the mini a bit thinner but keep the other dimensions like height and width the same.
Just purchased the Xperia mini in black for £99 from Carphone Warehouse
I think there will be successor of the mini, just wait and see. It will come. :-D
Sent from my ST17i using Tapatalk
There is no reason to think that for having a dual core cpu the battery is going to be awful. It all depends on the battery amount but also in the optimization of the system. There are plenty of roms that have better battery life than stock or other roms and the specs of the phone are still the same. Also the screen can be a little bigger, i'm not saying they should put a 4" screen in the model but a 3,3" is possible without having the size of the phone change much. In the current model there is space that could be use for a bigger display. The part where is the xperia logo could be use for that and the buttons should be in a row and not have the home key lower than the others. The next model is going to be a little bigger but the change in size is not going to be something that would take away the small aspect of the mini series.
Sent from my Xperia Mini Pro using xda premium
The mini is only mini because it has a smaller screen than the competition but makes up for it somwhat in a chunkier design. If they continue to make the "mini" bigger then it will be the same as the competition and not be so unique.
3.2" or 3.3" is too big to be mini and then it becomes the same as any other phone, unless they use an edge to edge screen with no borders or somthing.
I think Sony won't make the screen bigger cause then it won't be a MINI. I think they are going to bump up the processor to 1.2Ghz single core, much better battery and a better resoultion screen. Plus they might even scrap the "Mini" name and go for Xperia M and Xperia MP to keep with the same NXT brand.

[Q] Mini vs X10 mini

About to buy one of these 2 similarly named phones and was wondering which is better. I'm not talking about specs as the non-X10 wins there, but actual day to day usage.
Any input greatly appreciated.

Mini. Because specs make the difference. Whatever X10 Mini can do, Mini can do it better. And has a better battery life, with a bigger and better screen.
Comparison of "Mini Pro" SK17a vs "X10 Mini Pro"
Removed my comments about problems I was having with SK17's fingertip swipe navigation. An upgrade to Android 4 ICS solved the problems.
UPDATE: I just rooted and upgraded my SK17a from GB to ICS. The fingertip swipe navigation is now smoother (even one-handed thumb swipes), and fingertip swipes now work in landscape, so I'm bumping my rating from 3 to 4-stars ;-) So the SK17a is truly a fine successor to the X10...cept for the layout and backlighting on the numbers/symbol keys which is a still problem in both... and of course the bloatware which requires rooting to remove. I still love my X10 and it will be a fine second phone.
I still have some gripes about the SK17a so feel free to read my amazon review which will be long 4-star review by Kyle Y (keywords Sony SK17a White)
Mini definately I have the mini and lots of my friends have the X10 mini, Mini is way better in every way the screen looks so much clearer
PERFECT FEEDBACK! Thanks peeps mini it is,wifey will be pleased!

the specs are almost the same.
only the X10 has a bigger screen, 8MPX camera.
700MB more internal storage, 130MB less RAM, and it has adreno 200 instead of 205 like mini.
I'm not so sure that the mini is sooo better than X10... The X10 is a pretty descent phone. still holding up with time.

it just hasn't got ICS but in the future, who knows

Lost my Xperia S, What would other Xperia S owners would get as replacement?

Hey fellow Xperia S owners / Sony Android phone owners.
Last Friday night I lost my beloved Xperia S, and I'm still suffering.. I know the Sony Xperia S is not perfect by any means but I loved mine. I loved the looks with the transparent antenna strip, I loved the HDMI connection separate from the USB connection (Charging while Viewing Netflix for ex.) and even though I had a small show of yellow tint issue, it was not something that bothered me at all. I also loved the fact that is not a common phone (I'm yet to find someone else in person with one). Last but not least I had also familiarized with the phone, it's firmwares, ICS running fine finally, and this xda-developers Xperia S Forum of course.
So right now I'm stuck with the Phone I was given for free from my Carrier, an LG Optimus L5 (crappy phone), even though it has ICS, it's so inferior that it only makes me miss my Xperia S even more
Ok so I need to get me a new phone, and I can say I rather have another Sony phone, so I see that there are already a few models that are coming out soon: Xperia T (Flagship, Skinny Design) and Xperia V(Love the Water-resistant aspect, but Lacks on Front Camera Resolution) , but Like I've said before I really loved the Transparent Antenna Strip, and loved having the Illumination Bar App which would Blink Fast for a Missed Call, or Slow for a new SMS; So I'm also aware of the existence of the Sony Xperia SL (Overclocked CPU to 1.7Ghz compared to the 1.5Ghz on the Xperia S but still an S3 vs The S4 on the newer models T and V), but I can't find any reviews or benchmarks of the Xperia SL making it even harder for me to decide.
So that is the situation, I would like to know what other fellow XDA members would do in my case and/or what are the recommendations.
Sony Xperia T
Sony Xperia V
Sony Xperia SL
Sony Xperia S
Other ?
How do you lost it? I can't see someone losing a phone lol. But that doesn't matter. I'd pick up the Xperia T
"I got my values. So you can keep yours, OK?"
He probably misplaced it and cannot for the life of him recall where he might have left it. I've done that with an MP3 player or two.
I'd get another S. If the V becomes available by the time you make your decision (and it's reasonably priced), consider the V.
I don't even want think about it but I got really f*cked up in party @ a club on Friday and I sat on a couch and had the phone on my lap and I guess I just dropped it on the floor when I leaned to the side to throw up :banghead: .. so there you go, that's what happened
I would like to know if the CPU running at 1.7GHz on the Xperia SL helps on making the ICS OS smoother without hiccups and makes the phone more responsive, and also if the speed bump drains the battery a lot faster than the Xperia S. But I can't find any info on it

Motorola Razr HD: good and solid design, big battery, skin close to stock Android.
Nokia Lumia 920: beautiful unique design, good camera, cool new technologies (IMO most are gimmick but you may think differently), good screen.
iPhone5: beautiful beautiful beautiful and classy design (I really cant get enough of how pretty it is), good screen, good camera.
Honestly if I had the money I'd buy all of them
you know what i would go for the xperia T. having SL is like and S with overclocked cpu, nevermind the transparent strip, go fot the T its an S4 krait .
Xperia SL in silver...prettiest one among the bunch
Xperia T
I would go for the Xperia T or TX if you have to upgrade soon. The device looks very solid, and Sony has learned from the S.
If the V is available to you and the price is right, that's my second pick.
If I lost my Xperia, I would get a galaxy s (the original one) root and flash jb, change the battery, my wife has that now, easy 2 days with daily use (she uses it for work). Would be a good backup for when ur looking for another phone cheap as well, if u lose phones a lot has a nice screen and light

In the future, unless you're loaded and can afford to buy a new phone every few months, install something like Cerberus anti-theft on it. You have a high chance of finding it.

Depends on your demand of usage. Though i'll get the new Xperia T. Bond is the game lol nah seriously! it beats S3 n HTC on some serious level plus i have my faith on the new gen snapdragon chipsets & surely the battery can always be tweaked! my Xperia S runs for about 16-17hrs with normal usage so Mr.T can run longer or even perform better and definitely faster! Else, i will wait for the announced S4 PRO LG optimus G (Quads+2150mAh battery) but then again, i never actually liked the way LG looks. Xperia is the beauty with brain
or u could ship the TX from China , It dosent have that illumination bar but the XPERIA LOGO GLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHITE
