Hello All,
I wondered if one of you experts may be able to help me with an issue I'm having with my SIII please? I'm a long time browser of the site but haven't posted much until now.
This issue is coming between me and my sleep (and I mean that literally.)
I can't seem to master the art of getting music onto my S3. I thought it would be as simple as using iSyncr as I had with my S2. Alas, no.
Because of the changes to the mass storage mode (I am running a Mac), I have to download the Android File Transfer thing to connect my phone at all to my Mac.
When I use iSyncr now, it's slightly buggy. I put the phone into MTP mode, it starts copying music across and then after a certain number of tracks, it throws up an MTP issue where it says certain songs can't be copied. I then have to go around the houses and start clearing data from the media storage app in my settings and rebooting the phone. Then, I try again and get so far and the same thing happens again with different songs.
Also, when some songs transfer the albums appear split in the phone (though this is minor annoyance compared to the above).
I have left it on overnight and come back to my computer and it all looks finished, yet of my 6700 songs, only 3400 have transferred.
I've tried going the old fashioned way and spend last night dragging and dropping files onto the memory card using the Android File Transfer mode. I got one message saying a song couldn't be copied, yet when I actually got up and checked, again, only 3400 odd songs had transfered. There were no error messages and we're not talking DRM songs that hadn't gone across.. but some that I had ripped myself. It's all very odd.
Don't mention DoubleTwist - that's even worse.
This is really driving me mad as I am a big music player and I don't want to fork out for and have to carry an iPod too. I just sold my iPhone to use the S3 as I assumed it would be simple like the S2 but this is making me so upset with the phone. It's as though Google have deliberately locked out Mac functionality.
It's an unlocked unit, with a sandisk 64GB card inside. That was formatted by the phone and when I tried using a card reader instead, the computer said it couldn't be recognised.
I'm throwing myself at your knowledgeable feet here and hoping that somebody knows exactly what is happening here and what it is I could do to fix it. My entire weekend has been wasted sitting in front of this computer and I really want to fix it.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Can't help with your immediate issue I'm afraid (waiting for my S3 and I don't have a mac... ) but have you contracted the devs of iSyncr to let them know of the issue - at least that way they can start working on an update.

I sure have!
Thanks for contacting me and pointing me to this thread.
First off, I've pre-ordered the international S3 so that I can test this out. We just do not have them in Texas yet.
Secondly, I've been unimpressed with Android's MTP's robustness on other devices. I filed several bug reports for different scenarios that corrupt the MTP database in March of 2011. Zero have been touched by Google. Given this, the first thing we should try is rebuilding the MTP database, which lives inside the "Media Storage" app. I've put these instructions in an easy to follow tutorial.
http://blog.jrtstudio.com/2011/08/how-to-refresh-android-media-database.html
Please let us know if that helps the issue.
Cheers!
Justin
Don't suppose anyvody has any solution for this? Really don't want to take my S3 back but will have to at this rate. I think it's shocking that the S3 is so crippled from a Mac's perspective since the changes to MTP. Android File Transfer app doesn't really fix anything.
I have the same problem. Even using AFT, it wil not see the phone until I put it into PTP mode. THen I can copy data to it. isyncr see the phone in MTP mode but keeps telling me device failed to load.
I'm going to mention
I know I shouldn't mention it but here you go Double twist!
Right I've had some problems and this is what actually worked.
First you have to use itunes. If your music is a mess then a app on the app store called 'dupin' will remove any duplicate songs you have (it worked well for me). if you have lots of dead file links in your library just remove all your library files and then click 'add to library' be careful that itunes does not copy the files you add to the itunes music folder - see preferences.
1. Make a 'new playlist' --> add all your songs to it (press command+a etc). If you have a large music library like me then you can make a 'smart playlist' and limit the size of the playlist, handy eh!!
2. Open doubletwist on your mac and immediately make sure in 'preferences' the 'automatic sync' option is switched off (I had an incident where my whole library syned with 2 of my external hardisks...oops...and the funny thing is that one of the hard disks was where the music stored). Make sure the 'import itunes playlists' option is also selected.
3. In the doubletwist andriod app Select the SD card as library storage and Enable the 'Airsync' function in doubletwist (you will have to pay for the app but in my opinion it's worth it - it also supports ACC files).
4. Enter the pair code into the mac application.
5. Select the option to sync your playlists only (don't try anything fancy!!). You should see the one you made in itunes here.
6. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT: you should by now see the 'airsync' icon at the top of the screen. PULL DOWN THE NOTIFICATION CENTER AND TOUCH THE 'DOUBLETWIST IS SYNCING'. You will see a funky swirly multicoloured wheel LEAVE THE PHONE ALONE UNTILL ALL YOUR MUSIC HAS SYNCED ACCROSS.
Dont lock your phone as this seems to mess it up...
Hope this helps. I understand your pain, I lost a weekend too!
Notes: Podcasts and DRM stuff does not sync.
Notes: If your playlist is not the full size of your music library then if the 'live updating' option is turned on in your smart playlist then when you click sync in doubletwist it will sync different songs each day (I think...)
If none of the above works, you always have a nice shiny 50gb of free dropbox storage as an interim solution

If you are already an iSyncr user, as this person is, there is no reason to leave me for doubleTwist. We've got iSyncr WiFi, which we came out with before doubleTwist and is only a .99 cent upgrade. If you've got an issue with it, just email me, and we'll make sure it works on your S3.

If its possible, try installing VMware fusion, and you can run windows inside your MAC in a virtual machine, you can try this if everything else fails...
You know where to download these softwares
You can try for free...and find the serial key easily using Google.
http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/overview.html
I purchased the isycr wifi option and it is working fine... I think they have a "lite" version that you can try, but it only syncs one playlist or something, but you can see if it works or not. But that is what I am using now.

I saw a thread somewhere on this but there was no real conclusion at that point and I can't find it again via search.
This is my first Android device. Every phone I've had has installed software for my PC to transfer music over to use on their music app but that isn't the case here. I can only get into file browser. I'm not a fan of copying and pasting files via file browser as I like album images etc.
Any advice?

i know this isn't the answer that you're looking for but if you embed album art in the music files themselves then you are no longer tied to using any particular piece of software to copy music. you can use copy and paste or any other software knowing that your music is always complete with album art.
the downside of course is that you have to tag all of your files properly complete with album art. if you want to do this i would take a look at mp3tag.de which is free. i think media monkey can do this automatically too ...
if you don't, have you tried using the provided kies software ? once you actually get it up and running it's not too bad ...

Im connecting it to the PC in the two modes the phone allows. Kies says neither are the right mode to connect. I probably look stupid right now but how the hell does this work?!
Just copy and paste a folder of music onto the phone with the album art in the same folder as the music, that seems to work for me !
if you want a nice easy interface try kies air, you will get the interface without having to load any software onto your computer, (it's really cool)
Kies Air doesn't work either. I wonder if this is because I rooted yesterday.
Im not sure if you're aware of this but most popular media player software would have embedded the album art in the mp3 itself when it was tagged. Album art is often also added to the folder outside of the mp3s just so that the folder icon will show the art. It isnt however needed with most modern players as they are capable of using the embedded artwork.
when using kies air, don't just type the ip into your computer browser eg 192.168.43.1 but also the port number so it looks like this
192.168.43.1:8080
and hit enter.
Make sure both devices are sharing the same wifi network, if you are away from home then let the SGS set you up a network by choosing Wifi HOT SPOT mode.
PS when out and about using hot spot mode you will also be able to browse the internet from your laptop, the data will come out of your allowance on your mobile phone contract
Me its always been cut and paste .

Have you tried syncr from the market basically it allows you to transfer playlists in your itunes library, which for me came as an advantage cause been using iphone for the last couple of years so I just transfer new songs into my itunes and use syncr to transfer the playlists to my phone. U can also wirelessly transfer tracks using syncr which means you can be out and about in the house whilst syncr is doing its job.

Ah, Kies air is working today! Thanks for your help. Interface is kind of crappy but I came from a SE Satio so my expectations are low, I'm perfectly happy! I hope the Music app on the phone is good although I know WinAmp is good.
I came from an iPhone so everything was on iTunes. I still use iTunes as I find some things easier to manage e.g. automatic import & the remote controls you can buy work well with it. It is a terrible piece of resource hogging software however.
I moved to MediaMonkey and used that to sync both iPhone and Android. It's very easy, just identify which playlists, albums, artists you want to sync and plug in.
Recently I've been using Winamp to wirelessly sync. It's convenient but without as many features as MediaMonkey.
If you are lucky enough to get an invite into the google music beta (i was lucky enough to get one) you can have it upload everything into the cloud from your iTunes library (or a music folder if your choice) and have access to it over any of your android devices. But before this I just dragged and dropped all my music from my computer over to my phone which worked fine.

If you can't connect to kies via USB, go to you Settings > Applications > USB Debugging and switch it off.
You have to switch it back on if you want to usethe phone as USB mass storage.
I just end up dragging and dropping it into the sd card
I'm using Winamp via WiFi and it works greate, Winamp also can convert all files to a different codec like HE-AAC (MP4). But then my phone doesn't show the embedded album art - it just shows it at MP3-files. (does somebody has a workaround for this? Does it work to put a folder.jpg into the album-folder?).
You could enable usb debugging, doing so gives you access to the sd card when connected to a pc. At least, mine does.

Mediamonkey
One word: Mediamonkey.
Mediamonkey organizes all your music easily and allows for easy tagging from amazon, embedding of cover art into the file tag etc. I've used it for years now and there is no way around this if you want to manage a lot of tracks and stay sane. And here's why it's good to use with your phone:
It's not a massive resource hog as iTunes.
It lets you specifiy which subdirectory you want your stuff to be placed on the device, and how files and folders are to be named based on tag info.
(Mine usually goes into "\Music\<Album Artist>\<Album>\<Title>".)
It allows you to set up automatic sync of playlists or folders or whatever you set up. This can also be done automatically once the device is connected. I.e. my device will have all tracks in my auto-playlist "higher rating than 2.5 stars" automatically synced once connected. It will only transfer new files rated >2.5 stars to the device, not all the tracks again.
No need to copy only the tracks you want on the phone from your library to a "watched" folder that Kies or HTC Sync or whatever will automatically transfer. Simply pick the tracks you like and select Send To>Phone>Sync. Bam!
Of course, you can also sync individual files to your device from Mediamonkey.
It's simple and straightfoward. I am still wondering why there are so few people around knowing about this much better alternative to itunes in the Windows space...
Sorry if this sounds like a cheap ad... but it is the only one tool you need for organizing and playing music you need.
About a month ago I was transferring files to/from my Amaze 4G, and then I disconnected it from my computer (without clicking "Eject" in Windows or disabling USB storage in Android) and after that, every time I would open an album, a few photos would disappear. A dozen here, 20 there, until my >1000 photos (carried over from previous phones) were GONE.
I removed the memory card and put it in my computer, and used an un-delete program to retrieve them intact and unharmed. I guess the file table got corrupted or something. I did a factory reset on my phone, reformatted the SD card, put all my files back, and went on my merry way.
Just a few minutes ago, I was copying all of my photos from the phone. I made sure the click "eject hardware" in Windows, and then selected "Charge Only" on the phone, disconnected it, and then, just to make sure it re-mounted properly in Android, I un-mounted and re-mounted the card via the settings page. When I open up the Album app (Which was presumably running in the background during this whole operation), several hundred photos are missing.
I plugged the phone back in, deleted the photo directories, and reloaded them from the backup on my laptop, making sure that the Albums app was closed. I then re-opened the Album app after properly disconnecting the phone, and about 600 photos were still missing. I closed the app and reopened it, and only a couple hundred were missing. I went back to the album list and then re-opened the camera album, and fewer photos were missing. Wash, rinse, and repeat, until all of the photos had reappeared.
This whole ordeal has left me concerned about the safety of my files. Ever since the first one I have often opened and re-opened the photo album to see if the number of photos decreases each time I open it, and I've had no issues other than the ones mentioned.
Any ideas on a cause/prevention for this issue?

Maybe the album software wasn't given enough time to create all the thumb pics it uses for browsing for the 1000+ pictures you just added? It would take even longer if you had vids in there too.

If you can eliminate the computer as a variable then yes I'd assume the phone has a defect.
You've already said you tried two different microSD cards. One new and one old.
So that variable has been eliminated.
Only two left to go. One you can do with relative ease at a friends or even a internet cafe.
The other requires waiting for a replacement.
I would try and isolate the issue to one element first before I sent off for a new phone.
In any case if you'd rather just send off for a new one and be done with it then go for it.
Just make sure you test the new one and see if the problem persists.
Good luck.

This problem seems to not happen if I make sure to kill the HTC/Android Albums app before connecting the phone to the computer, so it's usable for the time being. Once I go into the next payment cycle (I used up all my high-speed data, and I don't want to attempt a reload on 2G) I'll take it into the store and see if they'll swap it out, just to be safe.
So no-one else has had this problem?
I just discovered that I can sync my Zune pass music onto my wife's Incredible 2.
I'm wondering if anyone's tried and be successful at making this work on the Rezound?
It seems to be tied to the USB settings options...
On the Incredible 2 there is the option to use "Media Sync"
This doesn't appear to be the same as the Media Sync on the Rezound.
Seems like there would be a way to make this work on the Rezound. Any ideas?

Media Sync was replaced by HTC sync. So this might not be possible. I think your only recourse is to manually pull the music over to the phone.

Manually pulling over doesn't work for the Zune Pass content due to DRM. On the Incredible 2, I can pull over everything including DRM Files. It's like it sees it as another Zune.
Wish they would open up Zune to all platforms.
Funny thing is, I can't even get Media Sync to work on my Rezound. It worked for about 20 minutes last night, then failed. And it didn't even work for media files, just contacts and calendar entries.
Are you talking about HTC Sync? I tried it out and it worked, somewhat. Took me a while to find where it put the synced stuff on my computer though. Turned out is was in my user folder > Documents > My Documents/My Photos. It never made a My Music folder in there but I made a Music folder on the ext sd card and tbh I never went into settings to try and make it sync that folder. I really don't like syncing anyway, I was just trying it out. I prefer to maintain my phone media manually.

I can't even get HTC Sync to work. But no, on her Incredible 2 there isn't an HTC Sync option...it's just called Media Sync. When I connect, it populates in Windows Media Player as a sync-able device, thus it's able to sync Zune Pass content. The main reason this is significant is because Zune Pass content is typically only available on Zune's or Windows Phone 7's with the Zune software.
Yeah, I was talking about on your Rezound. Oh well, I guess the DRM keeps you from using HTC Sync with it? I was thinking of going the Zune route but I don't like that DRM stuff, perhaps I'll pass on it. But I might pm you with a Zune question or two if I think about going for it.

Only problem is I can't navigate through the songs using my car stereo. I can with an *cough* ipod *cough*, but I only have a 2gb one that my friend gave me. And with Zune there's this whole music plan thing... I just have to check on my car's forum and see if you can navigate the Zune with my stock stereo. Whatever I use it would really just be a car player and I would just leave it in there all the time.
Hello!
I've bought a brand new HTC Evo 3D a few days ago and I'm enjoying it a lot . It's my first smartphone, too.
There are some things which kinda confuse me at the moment:
-When connecting to the PC, how can I access the phone internal storage? I can only see the card's content after I set it as a disk drive from the phone menu.
-In the playlist, some albums are listed twice. I don't think it's a mp3-tag issue cause my pc players don't have this issue. I can't say it bothers me at all anyway, but maybe it could be fixed.
-Can the battery future performance be affected if I unplug the phone from the charger before the green light comes up during the first days of use? I mostly did this while transferring files from the pc through usb.
Thanks in advance!
1. The only way to access the phones internal storage AFAIK, is to do it trough adb shell from the command line.
2. That is kinda weird. have you tried to clear the cache of the music app? then reboot, see if there is still duplicates. Or try a different media app and see if it still happens.
3. For the first few cycles I would suggest a full charge and discharge, but I did unplug it a few times before full charge, and I haven't seen any side effects...
I see, gonna try these out. Thanks a lot!

The best way is to use an app like Astro of ES File Browser. Using the computer it is probably adb.

This is a mp3 tag issue. I had the same issue, even the computer listed them right, but I installed a mp3 tag editor from the market and fixed all the tags, and now they display correctly in the HTC music player.

For the playlist issue, you can go into the playlist from the music app, long press one of the copies of the particular song, and select remove from playlist.
I've done a couple searches, and the recurring theme is "Kies is the buggiest piece of software ever written by Samsung."
And so far I can't get it to transfer my modest (~3,000 song) music library to my GS3. I've tried splitting up the playlist into smaller ones, even putting in on internal memory versus the SD card. Every time the result is the same, the sync freezes and I have to force quit the Kies app, then delete the "media" folder and start over.
That said, anyone have some obvious advice that I've overlooked? How about an alternative for getting my music on my phone? Doubletwist/iSyncr don't work without paying for them, and the drag-and-drop's not going to cut it for me, since I'm importing from a larger music library on my PC.
Thanks in advance!

If only that were true!
I just tried your advice and drag/dropped my iTunes playlists into a folder to export the songs, mounted the S3 in MTP mode on my XP box, and it freezes up after a while ("not responding"), and then when I remount it, only a few files show up.
Am I looking at a situation where I need to replace the USB drivers, or am I just a mouthbreather?
