Hey guys,
here is what is going on with my German Vodafone I9100
After using Sensation Rom for a few months, I finally decided to make the transition to Android 4.
The first rom I tried, was the Simplistic ICS by LegendK95
Installing from CWM worked like a charm, booting worked like a charm, but whatever I tried to do, the phone freezed in homescreen randomly after 5-30 seconds. Only a restart bring it back to work, only to make it freeze again after the mentionend time span.
Whatever I did (waiting in home screen, pulling down the statusbar, scrolling in app drawer) the phone always freezes.
After dozen of restarts, I installed the rom again, the problem stayed.
Then I decided to go to stock 4.0.3 (LP6). Installation via Odin worked like a charm. Booting worked like a charm, but the homescreen-freeze-problem got even worse.
I also tried to reinstall the stock LP6, but the phone now even froze in CWM mode, while data reset AND WHILE INSTALLING THE FW.
Now I got a soft brick in my hands.
So, I installed stock 2.3.3. via Odin. The phone now worked flawless again. No freezes, no no nothing. Just a working phone.
My final try was to install the latest CM9 build.
Guess what happend?
The legendary homescreen freeze. That nobody else appear to have. YAY
So, somehow my phone seems to be allergic to Android 4.
Can somebody please help me?
Regards
PS: Yes, I followed the instructions every firmware provided.
Honestly you want an honest answer. Stay clear of ICS leaks and yes that means even cm9. Reason being. Because of what they are. Leaks and nothing official. Not saying that they are not good but if you look at the original android development can you see any actual ICS roms? No. Why you asking? Because no kernel sources have been released and nothing is far from stable yet. Even cm9 builds codeworkx has on the thread title experimental. So my advice. Flash a Gingerbread custom rom slap on it the ICS by vertumus and your good to go till the official stuff get released.
Maybe before flashing ICS you should fully wipe your device to get rid of all previous ROM data from Gingerbread as they,I imagine, wont be very compatable.
Boot to recovery and go to "mounts and storage" and format System/Data/cache and then factory reset. Then flash the Rom via recovery(install zip).If its an Odin flash then reboot and flash via Odin.
Hi suarez,
thanx for your opinion. I read a lot of threads before updating and came to the conclusion that the current releases, even CM9 seem to be pretty stable.
Also I found no one having issues like that.
Hi cooza,
I did that.

No problem my friend. But I still stand by what I said though. For me to make the jump is a no go yet. Yes they might be stable but so far I still read problems regarding video forever, this is not working that does not work and that most issues will be solved once kernel source is available. Hence why still the experimental on cm9.thread.

Yes, but if you're not that big into watching/recording videos on your SGS2, it's pretty freaking stable.
Installing the latest experimental build of CM9 is probably the best thing I've done to my SGS2 as of late. It's just so... Nice.
I cannot get rid of that problem.
I really need help on this.
Some new information:
I also tried to flash the leaked stock LP2. Same result.
This FW crashed on first start, when the Samsung Apps are installed.
Still some little success:
When flashing from stock BUGKJ2 straight to LegendK95's Simplistic ICS rom, I was able to get it to run, until I have to restart the phone.
But this was the only rom capable of doing so. Every other fw failed.
So, I now can have ICS on my phone but only until I restart the phone.
After reboot, the phone crashes again after some seconds.
Additionally the CWM Recovery doesnt work as long as I have a ICS rom on it.
It also occasionally crashes. Preferrably when I try to flash a new rom, leaving me a shiny brick
Here are the steps to get Simplistic ICS run until reboot:
1. Put the file on internal memory.
2. Go to recovery: wipe data/factoy reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe battery, format system, format data, format cache
3. Flash from internal sd
4. Reboot

Maybe the problem is the stock firmware you first flash.I searched for it but cant find it,is it carrier branded?..BUG sounds like it to me.Maybe you should fully wipe your phone (format System/Cache/Data) and first flash something like XWKL1 and then the ICS ROM.If the ICS ROM you are going to flash has a multi CSC package in it then it wont matter what F/W you flash first.
hello cooza,
i had to go back to stock 2.3.3 because my phone was a brick after flashing any ics rom.
i tried to flash simplistic ics and cm9 via cwm, i dont know if those contain multi_csc.
however, the leaked stock roms, lp2 and lp6 both contain multi_csc that i flashed via odin.
here are all the steps i tried:
fail 1: flashing from sensation rom 3 (2.3.6) to simplistic ics
fail 2: flashing from 2.3.3 to cm9/simplistic ics
fail 3: flashing from bricked ics to stock lp6
fail 4: flashing from 2.3.3. to 2.3.5. (latest official release via kies) to cm9/simplistic ics/stock lp6
fail 5: flashing from 2.3.3 to leaked stock lp6 inluding the pit-file provided
nevertheless, flashing from 2.3.5 to simplistic ics worked until restarting the phone. however, cwm was not working correctly then. so, surely i could have tried to let the phone on for forever, but as soon as i would want to flash a new firmware, i would have got a brick left, because cwm would crash during installation of the new one.
there must be some help out there
thanx for trying cooza. much appreciated.
You might have a damaged bootloader.Although its not needed you could try a JTag.A JTag is used to bring a hard bricked phone back to life. You dont have a hard bricked phone but what it also does is repairs any damage that the bootloader may have.Costs about 25 to 30 euros. As a last resort you could give it a go if your phone is going to give you constant reboot problems and not let you flash firmwares. It should also repair any repartition faults because it completely wipes the bootloader before repairing it.The phone will come back like the first day you got it.check the link below out and use it to find one close to you if you choose to do one.I had an i9000 done last September here in Spain and it came back perfect from a hard brick soo I know it works.I used the link below.

Seems like the very last option to me
Would a broken bootloader allow me to run 2.3.X flawless?
Question does Samsung stock firmware work .
As it seems all your problems are from using a buggy unreleased test rom not from using Samsung released firmware .
I would if it was my problem .
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card wiping everything on the phone .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct Samsung stock firmware for your phone model .
Test phone works .

hi JJ,
thanks for your post.
as i said, the phone is working fine on stock android 2.3.X as well as custom firmwares using 2.3.X.
However, all 4.0.X firmwares I tested, showed the same behaviour: crashing my phone in homescreen (or anywhere else after booting) AND in cwm after 10 to 30 seconds.
only simplistic ics custom rom worked fine until first reboot. then it crashed as well. everytime.
I tested 2 stock firmwares of samsung and 2 custom roms.
I also tested flashing 4.0.3 (CM9) on a friends SGS2 using the same procedure I used on my phone. It worked on first try and he`s now a happy android 4 user.
right now i`m running on CM7 but i wanna uprage to android 4.
edit:
up to this date there is no official released 4.0.3 rom for the sgs2 but how can it be that I have the only phone showing such a behaviour while everyone else has a 99% stable fw for the same phone using the same rom?
Mate,at least it works, thats the important thing.I can understand that its frustrating when the only Firmware/customROM you want doesnt work in your phone and only your phone but we are talking about BETA version ROMs.If there is something for some reason blocking the ICS ROM then it is possible that the JTag will clear it up as it wipes and repears the bootloader as I mentioned so any corrupt data will dissappear.Ive had a bricked phone done and it still works perfectly today but never a phone in your situation. Its possible but never having done so I cant guarantee it.If you want give it a go.You got nothing to loose except 20 or 30 bucks for your efforts.
I have exactly the same issue with a "german" Galaxy S2. I tried to install the {CWM}İCS REMİX ROM v8.4 ULTİMATE ONLİNE XXLP6 4.0.3 resurrection NO-WİPE
Version.
Followed ofcourse the installation instructions letter for letter. It doesn't go over the logo screen. ( And yes I am aware it takes several minutes for such an installation to finish)
I read in that thread of at least another 3-4 people with the same issue.
Going back to any 2.3.x works as usual.
If you take the time and read the various ICS posts one inescapable fact will arise .
ICS suffers from many varied problems with no two users reporting identical problems .
That is compounded by two factors one the boot loader and two as a beta test rom for some strange reason those with very little knowledge rush to install it .
But hey save money on the Samsung testing department just leak your Alphas and Betas .
For me i will play with a test rom for an hour or two but thats it i require a stable rom for daily use . It will need vast improvement for me to consider the final release of ICS for daily use .

GSMArena say that Samsung are launching ICS for the S2 in march
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_ii_and_galaxy_note_to_get_ics_in_march-news-3752.php
with this I imagine that stable ICS custom ROMs are just around the corner so if you can wait a few months more you will be able to flash a stable safe ROM without any problems.Until then the BETA versions that are out at the moment are going to cause these types of things.
I had these same isues with KP8 on my s2. I fixed them by flashing LP6 directly over kp8 without wiping anything. I think it may have something to do with the phone drivers you have installed on your pc. They may be damaged and be producing some kind of error on the flashing proccess. I recomend that you hard reset to 2.3.x and reinstall kies on your pc. That should reinstall phone drivers too. And make sure kies is NoT running while using odin. Kies doesent like odin

I have patience As long as I fallback to a functional rom everyting is cool. As for the alpha-beta testing, I have nothing against it and I didn't complain about it. Till March I hope the S3 is out so I can pass my S2 to my better half ...
I am having real issues with 4.0.4, When I upgraded to ICS from GB I did the usual clear caches, factory reset and all the rest, but performance was slow, the phone would restart, the phone would lock up resulting in having to remove the battery to get it going again, I've had apps close unexpectedly, launcher crashing and restart, it was a major pain in the behind. I thought OK I will install a custom ROM so I installed CM9, did the usual reset procedure etc but still performance is not great, its like the phone is struggling with memory or something, and yesterday opened the BBC news app and the entire phone locked up again resulting in having to remove the battery, so the same issues are happening on a custom rom that I had on stock.
So I am wondering is it something with 4.0.4 or is it something with my phone? Memory problems etc.

- update your apps to latest versions via playstore for best compatibility.
- don't restore app + data using titanium backup after upgrade, or flashing CM9, it will drag down the performance. You can however, restore apps only.
Swyped from my Galaxy SII
You might be onto something, I used TB to restore app & data on CM9

and that's the reason why you have sluggish performance.
If you read the warnings on CM9 thread, first post, it's categorically started there too

UPDATE 21 Oct 2012:
Hi guys, I have good news. As I finally decided to bite the bullet and break the ice by flashing with flashtool from 2.3.7 to 4.0.4 ICS I have no problems anymore now!!
Before flashing I wisely backed up my contacts and apps. And for flashboot mode I UNCHECKED all Wipe data and only checked "no final verification check"
and flashed 4.0.4. Afterwards reboot I discovered that ALLL my data retained, everything including all game saves. Only a little bit personal customization.
To summarize what problems I have solved now:
1. No more freezing during games! and force me to reboot!
2. When reboot no more application NOT found issue!
3. After unchecking all but USB connection in developers option, I have not a single lag and home menu refres issue (my lesson: never check any unneccesary things in developers option)
4. And I feel a little bit less battery consuming.
5.. All with new functions and widgets.
Oh I totally love my Xperia S with 4.0.4 ICS. Thanks for all the time and patience and advise from you guys~~ Xperia all the way!
Cheers!
Hi Guys, I hve some questions regarding my phone, and I hope anyone could give me the right answers.
First what I have is:
- Xperia S (LT26i)
- Android 2.3.7
- Build number: 6.0.A.3.73
- Rooted & unlocked bootloader
1) As I have bought the phone in May 2012, and have rooted it since then.
I know the Gracenote thing (DRM keys) are lost, so that Im not able to use "sens me channel" to downloadl music info
(Track ID does work though). Im not able to restore this function anymore right?...
2) I have the official update notification on the phone for a few months already. As I have many apps and games (like 100+), I never found the courage and confidence to upgrade, because Im afraid I will lose data and game saves after update.
But Im a noob in this; IS it even possible for a ROOTED 2.3.7 to upgrade to a official 4.0 via PCC? or do I need to use Flashtool or something? I really dont know about this..
3) I do have Titanium backup and can backup apps and their saves too. If I CAN upgrade via official way (as Im currently unoffcialy rooted & bootloader unlocked), will I lose my date if done via offcial way? If i CANNOt upgrade via official way (as im root + unlocked), and must use flastool, will I lose date if done via flashtool?
4) Lastly, even I love my phone it as many problems nowadays like: often freezes when playing bigger games like Reckless racing, Radiant Defense (which is not even big).. better said certain games, when playing a long time, the device ofcourse gets hot and will eventually freeze, I can do nothing but only reset and restart the phone by pressing power-button+volume up for a few seconds..
The annoying thing is, my frequency of freezing and restarting is nowdays at least once each day or 2 days. as long as i play games..and sometimes even when browsing my favorite forum website....
and THEN after restart I often, really often have APPLICATION NOT FOUND issue, which means I have to restart again or reload the SD card using "reload SD card APP" which is also really really annoying.
I mean the freezing is the most annoying as it forces me to RESTART and then the application not found appears randomly on my installed apps (mostly only games) AND i have to reinstall (overwrite) the app in order to have the app back.
If I dont need to restart I wont have that problem. My problem here is; do I really need to upgrade to 4.0 to solve these 2 big problems?
Anyone knows about these 2 issues on Gingerbread? ...
I really need help & advise for above things... as I really want to not lose data but to see my 2 freeze & app not found problems is getting more annoying day by day... I really dont know what to do anymore..........:crying:
If you don't wipe data you don't have to worry. To be sure you can flash a ics rom with flashtool unchecking the "wipe data" option. Then, you can use this to root it again
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
or flash a custom kernel.

ok I understand that I would need relock or flash with flashtool.
What im afraid is, will I lose stuff when relocking? will my root apps (titanium backup, market unlocker etc) be not working again until I root again?
Also what will happen if I reflash ith with flash tool? even if I choice UNCHECK wipe stuff, will it not give me other problems like uncompatiblity? I know I have lots of questions but this is really due to no experience and not wanting to lose stuff.
But now I come up with this is due to nowdays my Xperia S running on GB 2.3.7 freezes often during gaming which forces me to REBOOT and after each reboot I mostly get APP not found issue. and to solve that I need to reboot again or reload sD card OR reinstall that app.
This all together makes me go sad and mad...therefore my noob questions .....
has anyone had this before and could help with advise how and what to do ?...
Hi all,
Lately my tab is freezing at random moments. When opening gmail, youtube, browsing, settings, .. I can't use it longer than 5min or it will crash.
I'm running CM 10.1 nightly 20130118, Kernel 3.1.10-cyanogenmod (never upgraded this).
I have also tried older CM versions (CM 10, older CM10.1's, CM9) and AOKP -> same problem.
When I install a new rom I always wipe cache partition, wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache first.
I'm running CMW Recovery v6.0.2.7. Today I also installed a new bootloader (US_LPL_4.0.4_bootloader) but still the same issue.
Any ideas? Is it possible to do a harder reset than I already do? Should I maybe install a kernel update?
Thanks!
either you are overclocking and not stable, keep installing back the same bad app which is wreaking havoc, restoring from an old TB backup which is not playing nice on current stuff, installing some hack/mod which is wreaking havoc, or you have a hardware issue.
odin back to stock ics (this will completly wipe the whole tab out) and observe for a few days.

Never overclocked so I'm afraid it's a HW issue.
Just installed stock ics and it still freezes after a few minutes (without installing any apps).
Guess I'm gonna try to put everything default again (I still have those 0/0/0 folders from JB) and return it to the shop..

I have it for about 9 months now but never really used it alot. I think in total maybe 40-50hours (watching movies on holidays etc).
I did leave it on the table once while the sun was shining through the window so that might have overheated the tab a bit.. Not sure if the issues started right after that. I could still watch a movie on it etc, now it crashes after 5min max.

I have the same setup as you and my tablet starts to crash this week. Gmail won't stay for 2 mins
Try this!
You need to wipe it clean and make sure your 16G is not getting full. You can use any file manager ap to start your clean up, which is all you need if the hardware is not damaged. Ok, so go to root and remove any excess file you might have, this will eliminate memory issues. Next, reboot into recovery, hope you are rooted, then wipe everything including delvic. Install your ROM [INFAMOUS_2.2], the best I have tested, and reboot your system. If you can't do this you need to reinstall CWM, I use 5.5.1.7, and then reflash your rom. If this doesn't get you back in the clouds contact me.
Hello all, I am having some issues with 4.3 roms that I hope someone is able to help with.
I first noticed the problems after flashing PA 4.3, and after doing the usual restoration of my apps, I found that some of them now stutter very badly, the key apps that come to mind are Feedly, Dolphin browser, Opera, and the stock browser.
I searched the thread for users suffering from the same problems, but none seemed to have it. Therefore I took it as my own fault and tried to reflash the rom again. When flashing a rom, I always do the following: Full wipe, with system, preload, data all formatted. This I do via Philz recovery.
I then restored all my apps as usual via titanium backup, and still found the problem to exist. I took it as perhaps bad luck of mine, that my phone just would not play nice with PA 4.3. I then tried other 4.3 roms, PACman and liquidsmooth, but again the problems occurred.
This time, I eliminated my backups as a possible culprit by only downloading the affected apps via playstore immediately after a fresh install (after the entire wifi, google setup) and nothing else. However, these apps are still affected by the stuttering problem.
Flashing to 4.2.2 roms do not present this issue at all.
Therefore i searched for possible incompatibilities of the apps with 4.3, but was not able to find anything. Seeing as no other users of the roms are having the same problems as me, I can only concur that it may be something I am doing wrong, so I am hoping if anyone can help shed some light on this situation I am in, thank you.
Summary:
- Several apps stuttering on 4.3
- Full wipe fresh install with no other apps installed does not fix problem
- Issue is not present on 4.2.2
- Multiple 4.3 roms tested
Info:
Liquidsmooth JB - v2.9
Googy Max kernel 1.7.5
Philz recovery 5.11.2
If more info is required, I would be happy to provide.

I did not notice my notifications drawer stutter, however i mostly run in expanded desktop mode with PIE and halo so i do not use the notifications much. I was always on googy kernel for my roms, and tried using the phone, but gave up after 1 day because the experience was terrible with stutters and all. I also tried a cache wipe and dalvik wipe but to no avail.

the above is strange indeed. I am running SlimBean 4.3 since the first beta and never experienced stutters (also with TB restores).
You could try to setup your phone from scratch with MegaWipe (it will wipe anything clean, only leaves your external SD intact), whereas I would be surprised if this will help. Otherwise did you try another kernel (e.g. Yank's)?

Aye, hoping to exhaust every possible means before such a drastic "nuke" is attempted. I used yank before googy, but to eliminate all possible causes, i have only installed the apps that are affected on a clean fresh rom with no modifications or other apps installed. Since its impossible for 3 clean roms to be having the problem, its either me or my phone.
Oh and on an extra note, my phone has died from SDS twice, both times i have sent it back for repair. After the second time, i believe they updated my bootloader iirc, so it now has the red "!" sign after a software flash. Using the emmc checker app, it is also no longer the sds affected version.

Aye, hoping to exhaust every possible means before such a drastic "nuke" is attempted. I guess you are correct considering that:
(1) your procedure of flashing a rom is following the guides
(2) you tried different ROMs
(3) you tried different kernels
knowing that you had SDS problems, maybe it was not resolved 100%? I had, for quite some time, also occasional freezes and lags and the procedure here helped me to solve them, maybe also worth a try?

Thank you, I will try that out later. I AM having some bootloop issues but that is on 4.2.2, no freezes though, but the DFG seems like it wouldnt hurt to try.

Well I tested the DFG out, now back on 4.3 but issues still present sadly. One thing i did notice about my browsers though, is that it only starts to stutter when running 2 or more tabs. On one tab alone, it is smooth. Most of the other apps are also functioning smoothly. I guess I will stick with the setup for now and use replacement apps for the affected ones.
