Last night, my lovely Xperia S decided it didn't appreciate electricity anymore, and shut down. Now, despite charging overnight, it won't hold charge. It'll turn on, say it is at 0%, and shut down, and repeats. It already had the yellow tint, so it's going back to Sony anyway, but now I can't even put up with it until I found an alternative phone. I have to use a ****ty £5 Samsung phone with no camera, internet etc and with BUTTONS! How the hell do I use this thing?!
Anyway, rant over. Thought I'd vent my sadness/anger at my Xperia S' death. Got it preordered and arrived on the day of release, and this happens. At least when I get it back ICS will be closer to release I guess.

have u tried installing a new firmware? maybe the firmware is at fault and not the battery. unless you've open up your phone.
Just for the hell of it,
press the power and vol up buttons and the same time and wait for 3 vibrations and then charge it and see if it works

Guess you didn't read the terms before unlocking? It just says 'may'.
Please note that you may void the warranty of your phone and/or any warranty from your operator if you unlock the boot loader. Sony Ericsson can then no longer guarantee the full functionality of your phone, and will not be responsible for any unsigned custom software being flashed to the phone after the boot loader is unlocked. Certain functions in your phone might cease to work, and performance might not be ideal. You might also damage your phone permanently. In the worst case, unlocking the boot loader will cause physical injuries or material damage, for example, due to the phone overheating.

So...unless he broke it himself by overclocking or such, or somehow broke it while flashing custom roms, his warranty is probably still intact.
But anyways, back onto the topic. Could it be that your port on your phone died? There was a thread earlier with sort of the same problem, and it turned out that the device had a bad port. Is it loose or does the cable go in pretty solid?
To me it sounds like the battery was on the verge of dying so it did the power off, and it won't power fully up because it is trying to preserve the system from corruption so it's auto powering down every time you try and boot it up.
In any case, I'm sorry to hear about that, and I hope if/when you send it in, they can repair it quickly. Have you tried to call your provider for a spare while you send it in? I know some providers have been pretty kind with this "yellow tint" issue and have been sending a backup device while your S is in for repair...well, I have read that at least :/.
to test the battery theory, have you tried plugging the phone into the charger while its turned off? it should half boot and load a changing battery icon. Now hold down the power button and it should fully boot.
If it works fine plugged in then I am guessing its an issue with the battery

Hi.
I've got a Galaxy S2 (international version, unlocked). Its worked fine until now.
Ive had it lying around for a bit after getting the S3 and thought about selling it. So i checked it out again. Battery empty so i started charging It - charding battery screen was displayed - so fine.
Then I noticed some dust in the speaker grill and I wanted to clean that out. I used my breath and a needle to get it out.
Afterwards it did not power on anymore, the screen remains black and no sound. But I did not even poke around that hard?! Can it be damaged just from that bit of cleaning?
I tried letting it lying around for a while, then pressing the power button without battery to drain all remaining electricity and finally tried both soft reset (power button for about 10 seconds) and hard reset (power button and middle button for about 10 seconds).
It did not turn on.
Then I tried turning on with my usb jig. No luck.
I tried charging the battery again (since it was about empty). No change.
Since the phone has 2 year warranty I think I considered sending it for repair. But I remembered that I had rooted it. They will not repair if its rooted I hear.
Is there any other thing I can try?
I assume this is a hardware error and a physical repair is necessary (PCB replacement?)?
Or would a JTAG suffice?
I'd even consider doing a repair myself (getting replacement part and doing a peplacement myself) if I knew whats was wrong...
Please give advice!
can you boot into download mode ?
try to get another battery. it might be just a dead battery.
I cannot boot into download mode.
While it may be a dead battery I would assume connecting it to charge via USB (and I did check that the cable is ok and does charge by checking with my galaxy s3) would allow turning it on as it originally did (got into the charging mode where it displays the battery level). It does not do that anymore.
have you tried using another battery?

I bet another battery works, this battery proberly needs some boosting to get to life again... after boosting it starts charging again...

I asked a collegue at work to charge my battery who also had an s2. So the battery definitely works on a properly working s2.
I used that battery on my s2 and it still will not boot up or show any signs of operation.
Is there a way to find out what component is damaged?
I'd like to try and replace it, but that only makes sense if I know what component is the problem.
If you're not experienced at testing/working with microelectronics, you have no chance of fixing it yourself. You're more likely to completely trash the phone if you try. That you asked a question like that suggests you don't have the knowledge/experience required.
Do the smart thing & either see if it can be JTAG'd by a 3rd party repairer, or take your chances with Samsung/authorised repairer & hope they don't notice/don't care/can't tell it's been messed with.
The other issue is, how could anyone here possibly know what's wrong with the phone specifically ? We're not there with you looking over your shoulder as you take the phone apart & we certainly don't have x-ray vision to be able to see inside the phone over distance.
I am on Stock ROM ... when I got the phone almost a year ago, I rooted it, and eventually went to GB, and didn't root it (only rooted back then for VPN access).
Yesterday, midday, phone vibrated about 3 or 4 times, and then randomly rebooted. Screen wasn't even on. I wasn't using it.
Last night, I was listening to an audiobook, and it started vibrating again. about once a second. This went on for about a minute, so I pulled the battery. Now, no matter what I do, it wont turn back on. If I plug it in to the charger, I get virbration. When I take the battery out, while it's on the charger and put it back in, the charging screen comes up, and immediately disappers. Occasionally, I am able to see the SAMSUNG logo (two of them) and it fades.
I haven't done anything "unofficial" in the last day or so..I did update a couple of apps right out of the Play Store, and for the first time, ever started using Google Play Music and Samsung "Music Player" app. Neither of which should have been able to fry my device! One thing that I noticed is that it was pretty hot when it started vibrating.
Should I mess with jigs and Odin etc, or just warranty it out? I'm afraid to void the warranty trying to fix it...?
Your power button is stuck.
thanks - but i don't think that's it. i hear it clicking... how can i know for sure or fix ?
I called ATT, they are sending a warranty replacement. I think something related to battery... if i leave it on the charger long enough, I can get the Samsung logo to light up. after a while, it stops doing that. Also, the battery was pretty hot when I pulled it. Going to stop by a ATT store to see if they would be willing ot let me check my batt on a display phone, or their batt on my phone - so I can stop the warranty shipment.
Haven't heard of a stuck power button causing the heat issue as you describe it, although I suppose it's possible.
But I'm leaning toward the battery condition as well.
My opinion on the exchange is to take the warranty phone if you have any questions about damage being done too the device.
And although it's nearly impossible to tell without diagnostic equipment and such, I'd be willing to say that damage is likely with an excessive heat condition .
Your call of course .....g

One day when the battery went down i put my phone on charging, after some time came an error msg popup..
' your battery temperature is getting high force shutdown'
when i switched of my phone and rebooted it doesn't boot..
now the phone is dead..
guess the battery maybe drained. dont hav any alternate battery.. tried another charger , no luck..
tried pressing vol up key+home+power, no luck..
while connected to charger, phone heats up near the camera, under the sim slot.. (heats up even when connected without battery)
on warranty period, going for the service center.. is there anything else i can do?
If you have warranty I would just go that route. Even if you can bring it back to life it may have caused some damage to the internals and would probably crap out again.

yes im worried abt the internals, it heats up like an oven, seems lyk the boardn is shorted inside somewhr.. im goin for the warranty, but it would take time i guess..
did anyone else hav the same problem?
Mine also heats up near the camera a fkin lot..
LG L9 P765
If im replying you..then be a good bytch.....
Got my mainboard replaced from Lg service center.. got it workin, but now i hav noise and disturbance during call...
LG Optimus L9 P760 can of course overheat itself then force shutdown.
Instructions:
1. Wait until your device cools down completely.
2. Plug charger in. In case your battery was entirely empty, after plugging the charger in, your screen may not respond for a while. It's because your device hasn't got enough voltage to turn screen on. Only thing you need to do is start charging your phone and even if it doesn't seem like it's being charged, leave it that way. After 10-15 minutes press home button to see if screen is back alive. If yes, you're fine. If not, take it to service.
I hope this helps.
Accidentally borked this trying to repair. Accidentally flashed wrong thing and went into boot loop. Since then it has stopped turning on and off, no hard reset, no nothing. I dunno what to do. I can't flash anything new since it has no power even though it's very charged. It doesn't respond whatsoever. Can anyone help or am I screwed?

just to add the haptic feedback that indicates the device is working doesn't work either. there's no way to get it into fastboot mode to reset as it wont turn on. Please help. I've tried to flash .ftf but wont work because it wont turn on.

Perhaps you should read this thread to get some ideas.

I have my share of bootloops and find this thread quite useful. If your problem is that your device won´t charge, have you try to charge it with dock?
I have the latter...it wont boot at all and no 'bump' or anything like that. it doesn't do what you're saying it should be doing to recover. I will try the red button but so far nothing seems to help. thanks for the advice I was going to send it to sony but sounds like ill void my warranty. just to be clear when i push the power the things that it usually does don't happen. no haptic feedback, no 'bump', no nothing when you push the button. Its on charger so the issue isn't battery. it just doesn't charge AFAIK. or can tell. Well, off to the red button and see how that works. All I have yet to try i believe as i cant use the other tools till it turns on at least.

the soft brick red button didn't work as it just presses down. Im still stuck without power and without a way to reinstall software. or get rid of brick. any other suggestions before i send to sony?
any ideas before I send to sony? they probably are going to void my warranty. the red button only goes up and down. it wont' stay down. and it doesnt work at all. should i just send it in and hope for the best?
I had this the other day, flashed the wrong thing, spent hours looking over the net, no haptic feedback, no light when connected to the charger, no fastboot, it seemed dead in every sense of the word, requested an RMA from amazon, I had til the 12 Nov to return it, since I was going to Italy for for 12 days I thought I would take with me, if I couldn't sort it I would return it as defective, night before I was due to leave, tried the power button and it jumped to life, as if nothing had happened, flashed the correct image and here I am in Italy writing this on my Z2 tablet, not sure if it helped but I had mine connected to the power 85% of the time I thought it was dead

The onlynresson the RMA worked was the unit not responding otherwise my warranty was void. Turned into a positive as they replaced the unit. I left it charging for a week with no change. Good for you though.

Hello guys ,
Yesterday my device ran out of battery and turned off.
I am trying to charge it and i have already used different chargers with no success.
When i connect an AC Charger the red led blinks on and off for some time. During that time i cant do anything (device doesnt power on and even if i press Vol UP+Power Button phone remains unresponsive)
After some time the led stops blinking and remains permanent red (phone now responds when pressing Vol UP + Power Button and vibrates 3 times)
No matter how many hours i have the phone charging , it simply doesnt power on despite the fact that when pressing Vol UP + Power Button it vibrates 3 times.
I really dont like the idea of a hardware error or corrupted bootloader and i want to believe that its a battery failure....
I also tried to charge it from USB ports and even from a power bank with no success at all.
Any ideas?
^ Do you still have warranty on the product? If so I suggest contacting Sony and sending in your phone for repairs...
I have unlocked my bootloader therefore i think that if they manage to boot the phone and see that my bootloader is unlocked they will charge the repair since my warranty is voided.

Set your device in fastboot mode, and flash a new kernel (stock or stock cm).

Not an issue. As Tommy already mentioned, simply set your device into fastboot mode & relock the bootloader. Simple!

If it wont boot it probably won't go into fastboot.
Does the wall charger get warm? I had the same issue once. I tock about 4 hours before it started to charge properly
I made a last attempt and left it charge during last night and all of a sudden when i woke up in the morning i found it with screen on waiting for PIN insertion.... wtf.... Battery was at 100%. Thank God cause i was thinking the worst.
I still don't have any idea what's behind this. I ordered a second battery to test.
Given the chance I'd like to share another strange that happens since the first day i got my XZU.
1.When i charge the phone when battery surpasses 90% screen starts turning on, then after the timeout turns off and then immediately on again etc . This keeps happening till fully charged.
2. I also noticed that i can't turn off the phone using RON's power menu (no matter if stock or custom ROM). Power off just reboots the phone into ROM again.
Has anyone else noticed any of these?

never seen [1] before, [2] is a semi common bug in custom kernels, not sure why it will happen on stock
