Hi guys, I currently have photon which I do like. I I hate motoblur, and end up rooting it and removing sprint bloat, installing different launcher, sms app, keyboard as photons stock offering is very much lacking.
Now, I always love custom roms which makes phone snapper, and right now, photon doesn't really have much to offer as far as dev goes at all... Specially due to unlocking method which kills 4g and so much workaround required to get it working.
I have an opportunity to trade my photon in for an evo3d. As far as raw performance gods, which is better? Is tegra chip much better than the dual core in the evo? I know that with the evo there is much more development going on to say the least, but is the device pretty comparable performance wise? Isn't photons display a little richer? Even though both are qhd?

Im going to give the best opinion before a battle breaks out. Go with whichever one your happier with. There both good phones.

The display on the EVO looks better in my opinion because if you look close at the photon it gets all colored its the pentile display. You will get mixed results about which phone has more raw power. The biggest differences are 3d vs global. The EVO also has an asynchronous processor and the photon doesn't. It's preference. Personally if I need my phone to last I can get a good 17 hours so I don't know if battery life is that important. But a lot of people saythat the photon is faster. I couldn't give you a verdict on that. They are both great phones.

Could care less about gsm on the device, i like build quality of the evo, but I want something with better potential, performance, and display.

Funny that a thread with this same title got locked about a week ago. Compare development pages too. Your answer is clear.

The display on the EVO is better. Again performance is a toss up. Ive seen very convincing results of the EVO heaving the more powerful processor but many people argue for the tegra two. You'll be pretty good either way.

As a owner of both.
Display: the 3D has a slightly crisper display but even with the brightness all the way down the Photon is still view-able in sunlight. Even with the brightness all the way up the 3D the screen is barely usable.
Battery: the Photon is heads and shoulders above the 3D. I'm a heavy user and was able to get more than a day worth of usage.
Radio: Photon wins here again. Locks and stays connected to 4G, 3G and voice signals much better than the 3D. The 3D would always drop connection on me whenever I tried downloading larger files.
Performance: Quadrant scores don't mean much but I consistently got around 2700 on the Photon running at stock speeds. The 3D only got 2200 max at stock speeds, the only time I got 2700-3000 I had to be overclocked at around 1.5Ghz. Remember the photon is only running at 1Ghz ( no overclocking available yet )
Sense vs. Blur: Sense adds a lot of apps and additional functionality but I do not use much if any of it, so for me it's just bloat. I prefer to replace rosie with Launcher Pro. The HTC gallery would never load my picasa album but the Photon's gallery loads my pics fine.
I never used the 3D functionality on the 3D but missed the kickstand on my OG Evo so the kickstand on the Photon is a welcome sight for sore eyes. The kickstand works in every orientation except upside down.
I travel over seas a lot so the gsm roaming is also a great addition.
Before either device launched the Photon was my original choice but being a gadget geek like most of you here, I caved and got the Evo 3D because it launched first.
There you have it, my summation of the features specs that are important for me.

From that shot it looks as if you don't hardly use your phone at all.
Your phone idle is using twice the battery your screen is using.

That's because I turn backlighting all the way down.
The screen is still bright enough.
I thought about it too. I switched to sprint from Verizon. I had a Droid x and decided to go with an evidence 3d. I had it over night and took it back and got a photon. It's way better than the evo. I'm not one for htc's sense stuff. The speaker is louder on the photon, camera seems better, and the phone is lite weight. I also like the trimmed edges
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Sprint is throwing all their money into marketing for the Evo 3D but the Photon is a better phone bar none. The Photon would be a beast if it had the dev support like the Evo 3D.
Even without the dev support the Photon is still better.
I'm rooted but the bootloader is still locked so no real modding/customization as yet.
I have 30 days to decide but I think my mind is already made up.
The Evo 3D almost made me switch to Verizon, that's how bad it's radio issues were for me.

Wow, the issues you have or had make no sense. HTC radios are updated and improved more often and faster than any others I've seen. Price for the photon already droppped a hundred bucks at bestbuy. The only feature the photon has that I'm jelous of is the dock to t.v. control. Other than that laggy and and the too much plastic feel are overwhelming for such a high end phone.
And their off!!!!

Read this this morning, thought it was a great, unbiased comparison. Great read for anyone on the fence with the two devices.
Overall, it cemented my choice for the Evo 4g LTE....well it was already guaranteed, but it is a nice article for the people who are not so sure.
Just got my EVO yesterday and also pre-ordered a gs3 with $50 giftcard to bestbuy. I really like the EVO but may switch to the gs3. I have 30 days to try it out.
Thanks. Just a heads up the link you posted went to page 4. I read it and was thinking where the rest at.

Updated, thanks for the heads up.
I think the phone is great, easily topping the iphone 4s and galaxy nexus (both of which I have owned). It is easily the best phone I have owned. I highly recommend it.
Jelly Bean will only make it better in the future.
The Evo LTE is has a better display and a physical camera button. The only real performance spec the galaxy s3 has over it is a extra gig of RAM and a slightly bigger battery by 100mAh. So if I was you i would pick the phone you think looks best, since both have a good custom rom community and specs.
Essentially the HTC really would get better batterylife based off slcd vs amoled plus HTC generally has better signal quality. And honestly would the extra ram ever be used
That extra 1 gig of ram would be nice for multitasking but 1 gig is enough and is not the reason the lte sucks at it, its HTCs fault. Hopefully we get a fix soon as thats the only thing that leads me to wanting the s3, but the screen and sense is whats keeping me on the lte. Come on HTC fix multitasking!
Sent from my HTC EVO 4g LTE
The one gig of ram appears to be a marketing strategy.
The guy in phone arena even states that the evo 4g with sense 4.o performed slight better, whereas the GSIII stumbled from time to time.
nice and unbiased comparison. Funny how it just so happens the evo beats it in every category.
Samsung guys:
2gb of ram... OMG! Except the Evo had better scores on all benchmark tests. Also they noticed lag on the galaxy.
bigger battery... OMG! While samsung claims it will last two hours longer. In our testing the evo lasted longer.
Just full of lol. Hey guys, I have like 2 days left to swap my phone out.. I dont know.. I just really wanna go swap out for this other one, that looks and feels cheaper, and loses in every category tested against my evo. Sounds awesome right, I'm sure I'll love it!

not true, although the screen resolution of the GSIII is the same, the quality of it is not the same. curiousgeorge was telling me about it one time on gTalk i'll dig up the convo and post the info here... pretty interesting stuff actually.

Your right evo did win in a lot of categories...but the reviewer gave the GSIII plus where it deserved them...such as software features.
He didn't call a clear winner...because they are both great phones.
If you don't agree with the review, great, did explain why. But please avoid this thread in the future if your going to "pretend" to be an idiot in your response.

Maybe....and if that is the case then I apologize.
Often time on xda, people come and post such things in order to ruin a good conversation/debate....and such post often lead to a flame war.
Again, I apologize if that was his intention.
I may have poked fun at the samsung guys a bit, but was all in good fun. ( I thought it was kinda funny)
Really was a good comparison, I can send it to everyone on the fence, or to re-affirm to the ones that have already made their purchase.
When I personally make a recommendation they may remain on the fence, so it's good to have a site back you up on everything you've been forcing down peoples throats for a couple months.
I have been with HTC for over 3 years.. First with ATT with the Inspire and now with Sprint EVO LTE and I have to say is that I will always own an HTC phone.. I have rooted all my HTC phones and they work great on and off the root. The camera on the EVO is great. The Internet Speed is fast. I live in Atlanta and soon will get LTE in a few weeks and can't wait to see what happens... GO WITH THE EVO...

I apologize. Been a long day at work, but I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions.
I did not realize that you were making fun of the samsung "fan boys" who posted on the phonearena website. You are right in the way you protrayed them. It is ridiculous how angry people become with tech reviewers when the review doesn't go their way.
Again I am sorry, and for what it is worth I agree with you.
I had a Galaxy Nexus and returned it like most to get the Rezound. I liked the screen of the Nexus, the feel of it, etc. Didn't like how long the ringtones where, vibration, etc. I look back and I was being picky. Now that every dev is leaving here, are still sticking with the Rez or you moving to a more supported phone? I'm thinking about getting that GNEX again....hmmm?
Depends if you are a flashaholic. If you prefer flashing at least one rom a day and having jellybean now then go with the nexus. Otherwise if you are satisfied with having the best screen best camera great 4G reception but not on the latest rom then go with the Rezound.

I'd say 4g reception is identicle... It's the cdma radios that Samsung can't get right not the LTE
You can have a Nexus and not be a flashaholic, I'm not.
I hate to sound like a Nexus fanboy but after having both phones, I have a hard time not suggesting you to stick with the Nexus.
The only things I can honestly give in the Rezound's favor is better cameras, sturdier feeling phone (excluding extended batteries), slightly better audio quality and slightly better data speeds.
That last one varies by phone I think, I got higher 4G speeds on my Rezound but higher 3G on my Nexus.
My average 4G on Rezound was 15-20down and 8-12up.
Average 4G on Nexus is 8-15down and 5-10up.
3G speeds are much less of a difference but Nexus is always higher.
Development is one sided towards Nexus but Rezound does have life in it still.
All personal preference in the end

I've been doing some thinking too. HTC will never be open source with their m10 source code. That's really going to drive me away from theming the phone. If it wasn't for slimrom right now and the battery life it offers, I'd probably already have jumped ship. Let's face it. Samsung seems way more open source.

I think mileage here varies. My wife has a Nexus, I have a Rezound, anytime we compare 4G signals hers is always lower and has gotten fairly regular lost connections when I have no issue. A lot of that though has to do with the hardware in the specific phone you get, I have seen horror stories on here about issues with bad hardware in both phones.

This has been pissing me off for 2 years now since I went to a 4G/LTE phone. Although I don't use Google Voice. Happened with my LG Revolution and now with the Rezound GB and ICS and pisses me off to no end. Never had any radio issues with a 3G/EVDO phone. I absolutely effin refuse to get a iphone and also had the sad experience of a HP/Palm Pre Plus. So it is Android or bust. I also have unlimited data so there is another reason never to switch or upgrade til something really good comes along.
(in cleveland, oh if that has anything to do with it)
I just bought a Nexus and think I'll be selling the Rezound. I love the speed of aosp and the development, ie jellybean. I'll miss the camera of the Rezound though for sure

problem is, if you can't grab LTE, you'll never HAVE LTE. when my rezound gets 4g all the time, my nexus won't even grab on to it....at all. my nexus also gets like 10 dbm higher than the rezound at all times. rezound=better radio better antenna

Yea, but aren't the radio's separate? Isn't there two physical chipsets? I haven't really heard about 4g problems on the Nexus that all other 4g phones don't have. I'm not arguing, but more on the worried side. I had a nexus and sold it. At the time my area didn't have LTE and now I do. I miss the screen size and roms badly. I got it back for a good price and hope that I can grab LTE then again the tower is 2 miles from my house. If I worked for Verizon though although where I live is sem-populated I'm shocked we have one when there are areas of Pittsburgh that doesn't...
Another thing with the nexus is that when I saw the one in the store it has the Google search bar and the app drawer button burned into the screen when I opened a white webpage. Very disconcerting.

There is a nexus in one of our local VZ outlets showing that same problem....
well, the rezound for sure has a better camera, and from what I've seen a more reliable connection... the Nexus screen is better (although I don't know if it is as poor about the battery with screen on)
that's about it, if they were the same price I would've went nexus.
Atleast now there is Galaxy III =) dang that thing is impressive, I would've payed the extra $150 for that haha

lol seriously. the pentile is meh, and the fact that it's super grainy at lower brightness %'s ruins it.

Also, the nexus does't have an SD card.

hi, I'm looking to upgrade my photon to HTC EVO 4G LTE
does anyone here own both of the phone ?
and can you give me some inputs ?
what I'm really want to know is :
-voice quality / earpiece sound quality (the photon is the very good if its not the best ear piece on a phone that i have ever owned before)
-battery life ( i use seidio extended battery on my photon, so i want o know what to expect from the non removable battery of HTC)
-radio reception strenght ? (again the Photon is one of the best in this department as well)
i want to upgrade because :
-im tired of waiting for the ICS on the photon
-and though the seideio battery is awesome , but the bulk is quite noticeable
-and the photon screen is terrible IMHO (can't hurt to change to 720p 4.7" screen NON PENTILE)
actually i also considered the Samsung galaxy SIII but i've never been a fan of samsung, and to me their build quality is not so good, and the material used is feel kind of cheap
and also i hate the touch wizzz i've always been a fan of SENSE but because the EVO 3D have bad radio reception, then i bought the Photon, which is an awesome phone.
anyway , can please somebody gimme some inputs ?
thank you so much.
I currently have the Photon, Evo 4G LTE and a Galaxy S3.
The Evo LTE is an elegant phone, but it's honestly not a lot better than the Photon in terms of functionality and speed.
When swapping between the phones I am reminded of how fast the Photon is, and it just fits in the hand. The two more recent phones are bulky and more difficult to operate with one hand.
My particular Evo has a bad antenna (just shipped it off to HTC for repair), so it kept dropping calls. But voice/call/radio quality on the Evo is really nice otherwise. In fact voice quality is the best I have ever used I think. And the screen is great! And the Evo's camera is super. Battery life is also very good!
On the downside the Evo feels fragile to me, unlike the Photon. Photon feels sturdy, and rubberized so it doesn't slip out of the hand very easily. Evo is slippery. Add a case and it's even bigger...
For the record, although the Evo and GS3 use the same chip, the GS3 is much faster all around. Lots of things, like voice to text, are faster on the Photon. ICS slowed that functionality down for some reason. The Photon translates sentences MUCH faster.
In all, ICS does not add a lot of meaningful advantages, and it slows some things down (like speech to text.) I would give the Evo a shot if I were you - just don't expect a HUGELY better experience and you should like it just fine. And I would not ditch your Photon just yet.
hmmm
thanks , you seems like the perfect person for me to ask
because you own all 3 of them
anyway about the phone call quality, the evo is better than the photon ?
and how about radio signal reception strength ?
if you have to choose between the SGS3 vs EVO LTE which one will you choose ?
actually i do really like the photon
the only thing is that i love SENSE so much that using any android without it seems like a little weird for me.
thats why I'm leaning towards the EVO LTE rather than the SGS3 because of the SENSE
but i wont buy the EVO LTE if the performance is not that great
the only thing that i like about the newer devices is their screen,
i love the Photon
its like the perfect phone.
it can work globally.
and have very good call sound quality.
and also the speakerphone is one of the best i heard from a phone before.
but the Screen quality is very bad IMHO and also the camera is bad.
and lastly it doesnt have SENSE
please tell me more about your opinions once again
so sorry for my questions and also pardon me of my bad english.
thank you so much.
i have the Evo lte and my girlfriend has the Photon. performance wise, the Evo is definitely faster but not by alot. the photon is a great phone, imo. the biggest difference in the two is the screen and camera. so much better on the Evo it's not even funny. with all this being said, i don't think i would upgrade from the photon to the new evo, too close in performance. if i were you i would just wait till ICS drops for the photon or wait till something substantially better comes out.
I used to have the Photon. Like others have stated, the performance between the two isn't much different. The camera and the display are better on the Evo LTE. It has been stated on other threads that the receiption on the Evo LTE isn't that good, but I haven't had any issues with it personally. I also am getting better battery life on my Evo LTE than I got on my Photon.
My Evo LTE was a little glitchy for the first 2-3 weeks that I got it, but it ahs seemed to simmer down since then. It has been pretty smooth for the last month.
One nice feature that my Evo LTE does that my Photon didn't, is that I can use data while on a call. It came in handy the other day when I was on a call and was trying to locate a store with Google Maps. I do not recall being able to do this with my Photon.
Do I think it was worth switching over to the Evo LTE? Yes, for me it was worth it because I gained a better battery (not too much, but anything is nice), simultanious voice and data, a better camera and display, and the option of receiving LTE (once it is fully rolled out).
Yes that's the thing..it isn't always about just speed..shoot my 3d was fast..and u can't get much faster than instant...to me when I see or hold my 3d or a photon I can just tell they are not in the same league as the newer devices..the screen on the LTE is the best screen on a mobile device period..imo of course..and the camera is terrific..and the nice build and scratch resistant screen is nice..I have not used a screen protector and I don't have one scratch..not even one of those little ones..its held up nice..I swear I'm like a broken record but if the multi tasking is fixed (and I know it can be..my girls intercept does) this is the perfect phone for me..but that one issue is a big one ..
Had the Photon til a new job required a new cell. The EVOs camera and screen are between superior and far superior to the Photon.
The Photon as a telephone, with which to make calls, is far superior to the EVO.
Everything else is personal preference. If you're in a non LTE market (heck I'm in a so-called live LTE market in Atlanta and I NEVER HAVE IT) I wouldn't bother with this phone.

I still have the photon. I still love the phone and I have no plans to get ride of it. Since I travel to México and it works great over there.
Performance wise you won't see a significant difference, the screen and camera are way better on the evo, though some times it feels slower than the photon but it is due to sense. I would love CM on this phone.
It is worth the switch but if you think you are going to see a day and night difference.. You are not going to see that.

I will add that the GS3 with a case on it ( so it feels better) is a seriously good phone. The screen is great, calls are clear, the camera is excellent. Even without the case it feels better than previous Samsungs. And it's definitely faster than the Evo, and good multitasking to boot. I have been using the GS3 for the past few days while waiting for Evo repair, and I don't really see any down sides.
Food for thought.
Sadly the multitasking really is abysmal...but people act like the screen and camera aren't 2 of the most important parts of a smartphone..and the EVO is fast ..sense may make it seem a little slower but its not..I've turned off transition animations and to me it makes my phone feel faster ..I've heard the photon has great radios so I don't think any phone has come along to take that crown from the photon..
You might want to wait for the new Motorola Photon LTE which will be out August 19th on Sprint:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/13/motorola-photon-q-4g-lte-up-for-pre-order-hitting-sprint-august/
Then you can compare Evo LTE to Photon LTE hands on in store.

That looked interesting but I read before its going to have a slide out key board. I think its kind of big for a physical one. Just my opinion on the Moto Q.

In all fairness, the keyboard on the moto photon q is pretty sweet.

The EVO 4G LTE is amazing. Buy it. People are really overstating its issues i think. They are few and far between. Amazing call quality, amazing camera, best screen in existence (way better than GS3), it has Sense which you like, the kickstand is freaking awesome, and it feels awesome in your hands. The development is outstanding so far if you're into that, so jump on board team HTC.

i dont want the photon LTE cause it have qwerty physical keyboard and its screen size is the same as my old photon.
now its getting more confusing
i dont need LTE cause i live in overseas wheres there will be no LTE till at least 2016 or so
my only thinking is that the EVO LTE have "Sense" where no matter what mod or theme i install in the photon will never replicate the UI friendlyness of Sense
but if the phone is not that much better than the photon, then i cant justified the upgrade.
sigh...
if only there's a perfect phone out there hahahahahha.
about S3 vs EVO LTE
from the review i read, it seems that the S3 win in every other area except for the Sense vs touchwiz.
so im getting more and more confuse right now.
what i really want is a phone that have :
-Htc one X's design (i really like the international version, especially in white)
-Samsung galaxy S3's hardware ( the 2GB Ram)
-Motorola Photon's radio , call and speaker phone quality (one of the best out there)
-Motorola Droid Razr maxx's battery life
and prefferably global capable too.
i know this is wishfull thinking.
or maybe is should wait for the new iphone 5 instead ?

Hahahaha, yeah, the iPhone 5 will not satisfy any of your above wants. That's funny. You want a small, dated screen with a boring, dated UI that "just works" but can't really do much of anything? Go for it.
Anyway, assuming you were joking, I don't see how the S3 wins on every front. Really the S3 only wins in RAM, which currently is a useless feature anyway. EVO has nicer camera and software for it, better build, has a kickstand, and what you want for software: Sense. It also has a nicer screen that doesn't look like an episode of Spongebob Squarepants.

Im going to have to disagree on the extra ram being useless, I owed a Evo for over 2 months before selling it and getting a S3 and without a doubt the extra ram makes a great differences with a resource hungry UI like sense and touch wiz. Case and point, the multitasking, the loading it does when you hit the home button and occasional slow down switching from app to app. A lot of you users will be in denial that you actually have a problem but trust me I noticed it. One just has to look at your available ram when using your phone and see how low of ram it actually gets when using your phone. While on the GS3 you constantly have over 1gb remaining.

I hardly ever say this but...
Thats what she said!
CMX is very nice on the EVO.
edit: post 666
I am in the market for a different phone and I have about 200 to spend, Im on PagePlus so that rules out a lot of phones like the GNex and a few other super sweet deals. Anywhoo I have been looking through Craigslist/eBay, etc and it seems like The Galaxy SII, The Rezound, The Evo 4G LTE, and Moto Razr may all be within budget (used of course). All have their good points I suppose but I was leaning twords the Evo LTE since over all it looks pretty nice. Does anyone have any comments or better suggestions?
Thanks all.
I have been very happy with my LTE. The hardware is great - I like the screen and the availability of an sd card. I get good battery power and performance. More importantly, there are some great developers working on this phone. Between XDA and theMikMik you have a good choice of ROMs to pick from. Good luck with your choice.
Out of the list I will go with the Evo lte. It has the better specs. I loved the GS2 when I had it and even though it's getting jellybean the specs are out of date compared to what's out now. Still pretty responsive device tho. Evo lte takes the cake.

I love mine!! It's a great phone, hardware and software wise. I preordered mine from Best Buy, so I've had it since launch. It's got the best camera on any phone, and I've is the best displays (only the DNA and similar have a better display, because of their 5" 1080P display, but you're not going to really notice the difference on day to day use with your bare eyes). Looks wise, I think it's one is the best looking phones out there! I love the phone so much that I just bought a brand new white one (since they weren't available at launch) and I'm going to sell my black one. So about 8 months after its release, I still think it's the best phone available for Sprint, and one of the best in the entire market! As far as size goes it probably is the best phone on the market, but personally I'd like a 5" display so I can't say the Evo LTE is the best out of all phones available on all carriers. If you can find one in good condition for $200 or less, then I'd say to jump on it, because it is without a doubt the very best phone in that price range!! No doubt in my mind that you will absolutely love the Evo LTE!! Good luck!!

I actually just "downgraded" my Note 2 to the Evo and couldn't be happier. Phone is just the right size, plenty fast, and battery life is almost as good.

Obviously But Biased is OK. I have also discovered I might be able to get the original Galaxy Nexus on PP as well. Seems similar hardware wise. Im assuming the GNex has better custom rom support but the specs on the Evo LTE are a hair better. Correct? Any more comments?

Seems like you pretty much know your stuff. Def should be out of the EVO LTE or GNex. Basically specs vs software. What you prefer? A nicer screen, camera, and kick stand vs more rom development/Google support.

The screen specs looked the same to me, but the EVO looks nicer? It also doesnt look like you guys are lacking for ROM development either. I saw about a dozen, would you say thats accurate? How is the battery life? The Camera sounds like its super nice too.

I have both, kind of. (I bought my mom a gnex for mothers day and tinker with it when I see her). Battery life is abysmal on gnex compared to Evo, and that's even with the extended 2100 battery, irrespective of ROM/kernel combo. Also, the camera on the Evo is vastly superior to the gnex. I do prefer the feel of the gnex in my hand, not the build quality, but the shape/form of the thing.
I Was surprised to see, on the gnex, camera quality degradation after installing custom ROM (CNA), given that it's a nexus and all open source, but I definitely notice a big quality difference from stock software.
Just my .02¢
Camera Evo>gnex
Battery. Evo>gnex
Development. Gnex>Evo (but very slight edge, considering you can run sense OR AOSP on Evo, not so with gnex)

3hrs tops on gnex.

This was all very helpful. The only thing I find irritating about the EVO is the LED on the front only does red. I know that sounds incredibly stupid, but even on the shambling Droid 1 and Droid 2 I am using currently I can tell whats going on based on LED colors. I find the decision to put in a red-only light puzzling, but Im sure I will get used to it.
I am also assuming there is a way to root and unlock the boot loader no matter what version the software on the phone is? I dont actually HAVE the phone yet, but Im going to be driving a couple hours to get it this weekend. WHEEE. I checked the MEID first and its clean. I am porting this phone to PagePlus. Any other pitfalls anyone can think of?

I just got mine yesterday after owning the original evo4g then the 3d and now this..you won't be disappointed one bit this phone is amazing.. As of right now every bootloader has been cracked for s-off and i got a bunch of recommendations to run meanbean and its a very nice ROM haven't had any problems yet. Ohh amd also the led is a red green combo led..it is dissapointing they didn't use a tri-led but it doesn't bother me too much
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Yes, you can HTC unlock any hboot and now you can s-off any of them as well (s-off is the only way to go in my opinion!!). Development is great for this phone, even though it's only on 1 carrier (all Evo's have always had exceptional development though!). The camera AND the display in the Evo LTE are amongst the best, just read any Android news blog!! The S4 processor holds its own against other processors too! The S4 Pro would be nice of course, but the standard S4 is still great. You really can't go wrong with the Evo LTE, assuming it's in good condition!!

Even though I am taking this to page plus, the custom roms should still work for me correct? I have only ever used Verizon phones on PP and thats not much of a leap.
OP, If you're in a metro PCS town:
I just picked up the Motion 4G for my lady, for a total of $175 ...(or less). The metro plans just cant be beat right now by anyone and I have a 25% sprint discount.
Here's the rub: Other than the screen not being as nice as the Evo LTE, her phone out performs mine everywhere for about half the price.
I realize its not fully attributable to the Evo, but her carrier brings 4G into the house and pretty much everywhere we go, at a minimum of 3 Mb/s.
My phone doesnt make calls from inside the house and is lucky to ever see 500 kb/s. The motion has ZERO lag, and the speech to text, and web browsing beats my phone by 30 second every time we race them to yahoo.com. This is still true when she is on 4G and I am on my wifi. The evo is slower than the Motion. :\
I also had to return my first two Evo LTE's due to manufacturing problems. I had an incredibly poor experience with the returns as well, sprint's "two week" return policy is really a 13 day return policy. Heads up on that.
I really do like my phone in some ways, but screw it. I've had an awful experience.
I like it but I only bought it to hold me over until my upgrade in August. Lol
Ill probably keep it until something I like is out. Preferably an HTC nexus

Love my EVO. Got a Nexus 10 too. Both are fab !
A phone one might want to consider to buy outright is the LG Optimus G. That phone is pretty awesome and overlooked and underpriced if you ask me.
I too was in the market for a "hold me over phone" and ran into it and was pleasantly surprised. Having owned a GS3, EVO LTE and the Note 2, the Optimus G had a little something over all those phone and all for a price of $325.
I'm still waiting patiently here in NY for LTE to startup! They need to hurry....3G sucks sooo much!!!
No Gnex

I empathize with your quandary; been there done that. I would NOT recommend the CDMA Gnex. I really, really wanted to keep that phone. I've gone thru three of them and all three had signal loss issues. It's a known thing for the via chipset in that phone. Sadly, the best Nexus experience is getting the phone directly from google and using a GSM carrier like ATT or tmobile.
Go with the EVO; best long term bargain for your money.
