Yes, that's what I meant. Is your battery charged? I'm just trying to eliminate possibilities.

I've had this happen two or three times. The power button became completely unresponsive. My initial reaction was that it was a I borked a flash of some sort. Then I thought it was a hardware problem. So, I managed to flash to stock so I could do a warranty return. However, after flashing to samsung stock, and doing a full factory reset, my power button has always started working again.
It is a pain trying to do some things without a power button, but I've managed it somehow.
Of course, it could be a true hardware issue. But you are going to have to get back to stock regardless. It doesn't seem to be a common problem.
Be patient and follow the return to stock instructions. Then do a full factory reset again.
may be a noob qs.. but how do i get to stock if i cant use the power button? can you please guide me? thanks.. cause i dont know how to get to download mode without using power button
EDIT: nvm figured it out..

did they replace it without any problems?? i have like a small mark on the corners.. would that cause them to reject it?
I just had mine replaced due to constant restarts. Use atts warranty if you can. They overnighted me a new s2. As long as its not cracked or anything, you're good.

Did you do a factory reset after you got back to stock? Either way, you should be able to return it. They will probably make you try to upgrade it and do a factory reset any way as a part of their troubleshooting process.
Yeah the trouble shooting process sucks... But stay with the, and be nice. Like I said, I was very nice and helpful and they next day'd (?) my phone. Had it 15 hours after my phone call. Be nice
thanks a lot everyone.. i went to the at&t device support center and they swapped it out there.. thanks again..
P.S. can the mods close this thread? thanks

I have the same problem. How were you able to get back to stock without the power button working?
@hobbes487
1. Power the phone off. (pull battery)
2. Plug the usb cable into the computer (not the phone)
3. Hold both sides of the volume rocker down (vol up + vol down)
4. While holding those buttons down, insert the usb cable.

A usb jig helps, too. Also, be sure you wipe data before you flash a stock rom. If you don't, you can get in a bootloop. Using recovery in a stock rom requires a power button to select options. So wiping data afterward is difficult.
---------- Post added at 11:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:33 PM ----------
Also, following the new return to stock with mobile Odin thread might be even easier, though I haven't done it myself.

I was also a victim of the failing power button - so I went to an AT&T store, custom rom and yellow warning triangle be damned. The rep plugged my phone in, which woke the screen and told me to reset it. I went to the mobile Odin thread and within 15min I had the stock AT&T rom flashed - and more importantly no yellow triangle. I also sang it's praises in that thread. The longest and most difficult part of the process was patiently waiting for the rom image to download. It's 502mb!

i cant believe its that easy to mess up your vibrant, my g1 never gave me a problem
did you try:

That is how I get into download mode. You don't ever hit the power button and you plug in the USB cable WHILE holding down the volume buttons.

I have a hardware locked phone and have been stuck at the phone to computer link screen (a rather nervous place to be, I might say). First you need to take the battery out (to turn the phone off). Then you plug in the USB with the battery out. Then you put the battery in. You need to get the battery charging indicator, and I can't remember if you need to unplug/replug USB for that or not. Then you hold down both volume buttons and the power button. The *second* time you see Vibrant (phone reboots twice) let go the power button. You should end up in download mode.

Basically, im in the exact same situation as El Cipitio. i tried EVERYTHING!!! no luck at all...
Can adb still see your phone? I'm guessing no, but if it can just use "adb reboot downlaod".
Then again.... you guys are aware that the "hardware locked" issue was fixed almost two months ago right? One of the members posted a thread with a zip and the JI6 update also fixed this. There fore if you didn't flash either you should call Tmo, but if you have, then you're just doing it wrong... GL either way.

One other thing to try is to remove the sim and external sd card and try the instructions I posted again. Really, if you get the pc to phone connection icon, you can get it into download mode and use odin to flash.
Dont waste your time fellas with trying to get, into recovery/download mode. If its anything like my hardware locked vibrant there isn't a key combo that will work. Probably thinking that your doing something wrong,YOUR NOT.
Im using my vibrant on att so I didn't consider calling tmobile. I actually called samsung, and after 5min on the phone they agreed to repair/replace for free. They recieved my phone on saturday amd I got it back that following thursday.

This is how I got it to work....
1. Take out the battery
2. Plug the USB into the phone
3. Plug USB into the PC
4. Hold down the Volume up/down + Power button with one hand
5. Put the battery back in with the other hand
6. Wait for the phone2pc icon to flash 2 times and on the second time when the screen goes black release only the POWER BUTTON
7. When you see the digging Android you can let go of the Volume buttons
That is the only way I could get it to work
No, I can't get it into adb mode. The phone bootup screen comes (vibrant, the pink tmobile thing, then galaxy s), but then it goes black. The computer doesn't find anything during this time.
I don't really have time to do the soldering, so i'll try calling samsung. Problem is i live in toronto and bought this thing for cash, so i have no clue what to tell samsung lol. If that doesnt work, i guess soldering it is...
Try this:
unplug, remove battery, remove sim/sd cards
hold down volume control buttons
plug into wall adapter (usb charger - not to computer but to outlet)
pop battery in
Took me a couple tries, but I got my Vibrant into dl mode from nothing but a black screen (I could not register charging, or "phone ! pc" error)

I'm am referencing more to the fact that these phones are not "hardware" locked. Hardware would refer to the volume & power keys not working... When your phone is on they work right?
Like stated before, IF, your phone is "hardware locked" look to either use the script or flash JI6. This way you re-gain functionality of the recovery & dl mode before flashing anything!
Ditto.. i got mine back after flashing without removing the lag fix.. never again... i will wait for froyo.. if that ever happens...
May I ask what bricked you?

The brick, in atleast my case, was from untimely removal of the phone from USB during Download mode of flashing stock kernal via Odin. This method described in the link above worked for me in getting the phone to boot into download mode without the use of the hardware keys (aka hardware locked phones). I also contacted Samsung directly through their Galaxy tech line, and they said I could send it in for free with their shipping label and if they couldn't flash back I could get a replacement, but there was a about a 2 week window I would be looking at without a phone, so I tried the homemade download-boot circuit and it worked perfectly.
THIS IS YOUR FIX!!!
I just did this the other day. If you are still stuck with the phone/!/computer screen do the following:
1.Hold the volume up/down + power button simultaneously
2.The screen will go black / reappear/ then go black again...when this happens, release the power button and continue holding the volume up/down button
3.Welcome back to download mode!
Please Mods, please lock this thread
Please stop waisting everyones time with stupid instructions.
When a phone is "hardware locked" (that is, bad flash/missing the sbin file.....)
YOU CANNOT GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE OR RECOVERY WITH ANY KEY COMBINATION.
Stop waisting your time trying anything cause its not going to work. And thats a Fact.
Final fix and summary to this thread,
Either call T-mobile or Samsung.
Finish.
Dont know if this is the right section but does anyone have any idea on what i can do? my phone cant get into recovery or download mode after flashing a rom. it just remains on the screen that says Vibrant and Samsung... no, it didnt have a lagfix so no voodoo was enabled....help please!! thank ya
Not the right section but...
Battery pull your phone then put it back
Plug in the USB
Hold both volume buttons down
THen press power button (while still holding volume up&down)
The screen should pop up with something (vibrant, phone!computer, etc)
Once that happens, let go of the power button (BUT NOT THE VOLUME!)
should get into download mode
Yea, i tried all of the little button combinations to get to either recovery or download..... nothin happened! im not new to this so i know about how to actually get there but its just not doing it now.....thanks anyway though!

this is the easiest method out there and should be sticked.
it doesnt matter if its connected to a wallcharger or pc, it will work no matter what.
works for me EVERY time.
I had the same issue yesterday after an ODIN flash failed. On the CM forum, I believe, was instructions, linked in the Vibrant Bible.
1. Pull SD and SIM
2. Plug USB to phone
3. Plug USB to PC
4. insert batter and wait for the icon to come up showing that your battery is charging
5. Hold Vol UP and DOWN, press power, hold power ONLY until the screen goes black, then release.
6. Continue to hold Vol Up and Down.
This SHOULD bring you into Download mode so you can connect ODIN again. Worked for me after a few tries. Don't give up, keep trying (Even though you want to either whack your forehead or throw the phone)
Another way I have seen it listed is to do all of the above until the inset battery part, and skip the waiting to see the battery charging icon. Hold the buttons with the USB connected, then insert the battery with the buttons pressed.
Hope that helps you out, as I know how frustrating it can be to have a soft brick on your hands.

i tried this, along with trying a jig too. nothing appears whatsoever. just black screen.
button presses? u mean other than vol up down and power?
Connect usb+vup+vdown, then put battery in
Here try this...
Make sure you have ODIN OPEN with admin privileges!
1.) Take off your back cover, remove your sim & mirco sd card.
2.) Remove your battery.
Make sure you have the USB plugged into your PC but NOT your phone!
3.) Hold the volume buttons.
4.) Put the battery in.
5.) Put the USB in.
You don't necessarily need the download mode image to be present. As long as you are getting the COM ID to light up yellow in ODIN, just flash back to stock like normal.
Tell me if this works for you!
N00B_IN_N33D THANK U! that worked, kinda. It got me into yellow download mode on my phone,(which is the 1st time screen has been back) but odin wont recognize it, so idk how 2 reflash to stock now without it

My phone suddenly started turning off by itself. Also, I noticed that the power button has no effect when the phone is on. I THINK it works to turn it on, but pressing it has no effect after (i.e. won't lock, etc). Then it shuts off again in less than 30 seconds. I tried wiping everything as quickly as possible, and that still didn't work. I can't even reset it back to stock because the phone won't stay on long enough. Is my phone a goner? (i.e. hardware malfunction)?
I'm on Jivy's ICScrewed 2.1. Haven't done any major changes asides from testing out the latest ICS and Jelly bean ROMS. (aokp and CM 9.1). I didn't like them so I wiped and restored. This was last night. My phone was fine until a couple minutes ago where I realized I wasn't getting texts and it was turned off. :/

Turns off still. Whether I'm in recovery or download mode, the phone shuts off. Not sufficient time to revert.
Keep in mind if you send it in for warranty replacement because you can't get it working and they fix it or see you're on a custom ROM they're going to bill you. However, people tell me that's rare and that usually they wipe it anyway. Just a heads up.

The phone turns off even in Recovery or Download mode? Sounds like either a hardware problem, kernel problem, or maybe even a battery problem. Maybe you should try to flash a different kernel, that would only take a few seconds. But be careful, if the phone turns of during a kernel flash that might be dangerous.
Try to enter download mode with the battery out. Leave the battery out and hold vol down while plugging in the usb cable. See if it will go into download mode and not turn off. If so, it will be safer to flash from there.
It was a hardware issue. Got it back to stock and I got a new refurbished phone. I can finally love my phone again since this one doesn't have the horrid reminders of that one awful drop.

Ok so i've had this phone for a long time.. around 2 years i think.. Anyway today the phone just turned off by itself.. i tried turning it back on but it flashes the green light once and then vibrates when i press the power button but after that i get no response.. The screen does not turn on.. and the phone just doesnt respond.. Then i have to take out the battery and try to power my phone again but get the same response.. green light blink and then a vibrate but after that its dead..
Is my phone bricked? i didnt install anything new so i dont know how it just became dead itself.. secondly i've tried repairing the phone through Sony's update service and PC Companion and it gives me an error when it starts to install the software on the phone
Any solution?

you can try it or try to hardreset so ",my english is not good" you can try to turn on mobile for a 20 second on the power buton than remove battery ,conect usb cable with device, hold back buton and while this insert battery
Since your phone vibrates and blink's the LED light, I believe it's still alive.

The only time I've had that issue was when my cable was messed up...Maybe try a different cable?

I'll try to break down parkci's method:
1. Remove back cover
2. Press and hold the power button for 20 second
3. Remove battery (while holding the power button)
4. Conect usb cable between PC and device
5. While holding down the back button insert battery
This may hopefully either hard reset or put it into flashmode....
Supposedly another way to hard reset:
:
Press both LEFT and RIGHT buttons on the front and POWER ON...
Good luck...
