Samsung Galaxy S2 Crash - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all,
I have a Galaxy S2 rooted and I have a question.
Like you read on the title my phone crashes and I don't understand if the problem is due to some app that I have or if is because I made a total wipe before installing a ne ROM, when I say total I mean format all Data, System, Sdcard, and all you find in the advance menu.
I ask this because I'm not a genius, so if someone can answer me in a easy way so that I can understand.
Thanks to all.
Bye

to just say your phone crashes is not enough information for anyone to help you.
you need to describe exactly what is happening and what rom and apps you use, when the problem occurs.

You can grab the last kmsg (kmsg = Kernel Message / the kernel log buffer)?
If you haven't rebooted since the crash, grab a terminal editor and enter the following:
Code:
su
cat /proc/last_kmsg > /mnt/sdcard/last_kmsg
Kmsg is continuously overwritten, so you need to extract last kmsg as soon as the issue/crash occurs.
Crash => reboot with long press Power button => grab last kmsg.
Just have a look at the last_kmsg.txt file and you may recognize what was going on shortly before the crash.
Or post the kmsg file here again.

So I'm using Kernel 3.0.28-AOIK-1.3-g521d527 [email protected] #1 Rom HyDrOG3N-ICS, for the apps I'm using the basic ones Handcent, Whatsapp, Viber, Skype, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, K-9 Mail, Ebuddy, Ebuddy xms, Noled, Juice defender, juice ploter.
Regarding how do I find the last message?
Thanks

I have just done it.
If the phone crashes next time:
1. Reboot the phone with long press power button.
2. As soon as the phone is up, start Terminal Editor app (e.g. Terminal Emulator from Play store).
3. Type the code I already provided to you. That will grab the last kernel message and saves it into "/mnt/sdcard/last_kmsg".
4. Open/read/copy last_kmsg examine yourself and/or post here again and ask for help.

Ok,
thank you I will post it when it happens again, what I think see is that it goes very hot the cpu, and the battery goes down.

Hi,
I did what you wrote but what do I need to look because its give a lot of things as a resolt, plus I cannot find the saved file

[Q] com.android.phone problem

Ok, i flashed to ics real lite v1.1 and am using rage kernel. Its a clean install and didnt use any backups. I only restored my contacts via memory card backup and messeges via sms backup app. This is on the mini pro.
My problem is sometimes when i get a call, i get a black screen. I press the power button to turn my screen on then i unlock my screen then answer the call. When i do that i get an error bout "com.android.phone" not responding. Whenni click ok, my prone drops the call and i cant even see the caller via call log, its so frustrating. Ive read around and ppl suggested i delete a few messages from "reject call with message", but i cant find a delete command in there. Secondly, there was this suggestion about clearing the contacts cache and stuff via app manager. This only deleted my whole contact list and was never able to get it back till i did a reinstall of the rom. I dont use facebook or some other app, my setup is bone dry basic, i only use sms backup app.
I also tried using another rom, the full version of real ics v4, still nothing. Any help would be appreciated as i really like this rom.

[Q] Whatsapp Stuck on Initializing after Crash and Reinstall

So I had some sort of crash on my HTC Sensation where the phone rebooted, and all my whatsapp messages were gone. Whatsapp automatically backs up your messages every 24 hours, so I reinstalled to enable the backup.
1. After installation, when inputting information (after restoring your messages) and getting into profile info, I am stuck on an "Initializing: Please wait a moment..." box
2. This goes on forever
3. I have force closed, cleared cash, cleared data and tried again with no luck
4. I have uninstalled and reinstalled (and reboot the phone) with no luck
5. I have uninstalled and installed the latest version from the whatsapp website (which has a different file size than the play store one) with no luck
6. I have redone this WITHOUT recovering my messages with no luck (even deleting the back up messages folder)
7. I can actually receive notifications from whatsapp, showing messages from groups / people, though clicking it takes me back to "Initializing"
8. Sometimes I get an "android.process.acore is not responding. Would you like to tell HTC?". This may be a separate issue as it still continues to "Initialize" no matter what I press
I can see 28 messages from notifications, some which are very important and urgent. Hopefully someone can help
Edit: I am using an unrooted HTC Sensation with ICS
Thanks
Update: Tried reinstalling using safe mode. Same problem happens, though instead of being stuck on initialization, Whatsapp force closes and stops working after about 2 minutes

I tried to follow your steps, but they are not very clear.
Can you kindly elaborate the steps?

Did the steps, but still stuck at initializing.
If your phone is rooted, try clearing dalvik cache. Other than that, I fear the only thing that you could possibly do is wait for an update.
I'm currently having (had) the same issue. I reinstalled a couple of times and suddenly it started working. I wonder if it was a problem on WhatsApp's end, because I didn't do a thing - suddenly everything was fine.

Did this:
- Uninstalled already downloaded version from Market on the cell phone.
- Downloaded Whatsapp from my pc, from their official website
- Transferred the APK to the cell phone, installed it.
- Left it a bit (a minute) at "initializing". Worked.
got it solved...
i was having problem with cm7.1.5 so installed cm7.2...
on 1st start of whatsaap it gave me msg about having custom rom can create problem as it does not support whats app..
then also i proceeded n i was facing same problem.it was stuck on initializing.
then after lots of different tries it worked on one trick...
what i did was :
1.1st backup all my contacts(mobile).
2.then cleared data in contact storage in manage apps.
3.installed whatsapp 2.8 which was backup earlier
4.clicked "Agree and continue" then entered my mobile no. but,it told me that whatsapp new version must be installed.
5.i then upgraded whats app from play store.
6.After installation was complete i opened it and it was started from same step of application of entering mobile no.
7. i entered no. , restored data from old backup of whatssapp, all messages were restored.
now my Display Picture , Name got appeared.
8.clicked next, shortcut of whatsapp was created. in 1 sec it got initialized, n continue button got appeared.
9. now i was having messages but no contacts(whatsapp).
10. now i restored contacts(mobile) from softwere i was using. and now after opening whatsapp m having contacts.
It worked on my phone... try it... best of luck...
Found a workable solution. Whatsapp seems to get stuck at the initilization screen bcause of contacts..

Been getting this error since this morning. Reinstalled whatsapp. Still didn't work. Then I reflashed my ROM completely. Still having this error. Any ideas? Getting android.process.acore has stopped as soon as I open Whatsapp.
Running the Revolutionary S5 mod on my S3.
same problem
I'm having the same problem. As soon as I open whatsapp it gets stuck for a bit in the initializing screen, then crashes and shows "android.acore.process has stopped". This happens in the XRom, Smartdroid rom and S5 revolutionary rom for s3. Any fix for this? :/

I had the same problem with Revolutionary S5 V3
what did the trick for me was installing an older version which i downloaded somewhere(but not too old cause whatsapp wont accept it) and use it to activate and initialize. Then i updated through google play and everthing seems fine.
As for the android.process.acore follow these steps:
First of all switch off the internet
- tap on setting and navigate to applications
- tap on all options and search for "google services framework" from the list
- tap on it and hit force stop to forcibly stop the application
- now hit force stop for the following apps
-> contacts
-> gmail
-> facebook
-> whatsapp
- reboot your system.
Cheers
WhatsApp slow initializing due to contacts problem. Confirm!

[Q] FC com.android.Phone on incoming calls from certain contacts

I'm having this problem on incoming calls, just from certain contacts. Other contacts get through ok.
What happens is that the phone displays the message "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped", and I don't see who called and not a missed call. Sometimes even the error message closes by itself before I see it, so I don't know that there was a call.
To fix, I tried to wipe all data+cache+dalvik ache, didn't help. I reflashed a different rom, didn't help.
Recently I've synced my contacts to facebook with the Sync.ME app, and I suspect it might be the cause.
Any ideas on how I get my incoming calls work again?
First do a fullwipe again.
Then directly test it (not flash of another kernel or restore of any apps! )
Choose any Rom which should work for u.
Test it.
If anyway have problems, u should go back on a stock firmware and do a factory reset then.
Then test.
Uf this works now - root and flash Rom
again
Otherwise it's hardware (don't think so) or maybe account/Google related.
Much success and play give a short feedback.

Thanks,
Any way to debug the problem?
Kinda tired of all the wipes/restores...
I will try to connect to LogCat via ADB and see if there's something suspicious.
Please tell me if you think of other ways to debug this.
U can try to fix permissions via CWM
And also u can try to replace the phone.apk from another one.
But because u already did a fullwipe, I think this won't help, that's why I gave u this recommendations .

yee-hah!!
problem fixed
This was caused by an old backup using BackMyTones, where the contacts weren't in sync with the ones existing in the google database (and phone).
Tried many things (like full wipe and one-by-one app installation like you suggested), but what I could have done to avoid a full wipe was detaching the google account to erase all contacts, then reattach it. This fixed things.
Thanks for the help!
Nice to hear.

Hi, michaelitvin, I face the same problem. I deleted my google account and sign in again, but still no good.
When one of my contacts call me, it still shows "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped".
Thanks for any advice!

[Q] Viber crashes if using restored bkup data

Hey all.
I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 running SlimSaber 4.4.2 20140531 (Kernel 3.0.80-SlimKernel+)
I backed up my APKs and Data with MyBackup Pro
Switched from NeatROM by flashing to Slim Saber
Restored all my data using MyBackup Pro
Mostly everything works except for Viber
A fresh installation of Viber works. But the moment I restore my data, it will not start up anymore. I've checked CatLog and the main error seems to be permission based:
Code:
Failed to chmod(/data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages):
libcore.io.ErrnoException: chmod failed: EPERM (Operation not permitted)
Unable to create files directory /data/data/com.viber.voip/files
I've tried manually changing the permissions to follow the same perms from the "fresh data" of Viber - but that doesn't seem to fix this error.
Full Viber log:

Fixed! Android Viber Backup and Restore Successful
Okay, thank Jesus I managed to get this fixed and this is what it took.
This solution required a Rooted device.
Restore Viber backup (for me I did this using MyBackup Pro)
Install SQLite Debugger from the Play Store
Using SQLite, try locating the Viber database files by selecting App then choosing Viber from the list (if you want to locate the database manually, for me it was under /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases)
Choose the "viber_data" database
Open the database, scroll to the bottom, choose "Create backup"
Save the backup somewhere on your SD card (not inside the viber folder or else it will get deleted)
Repeat the same steps for the "viber_messages" database
Uninstall Viber (or if you are using MyBackup Pro, go under Toolbox and "Wipe the Cache & Data" for Viber)
Reinstall Viber so that a fresh, clean working set of databases are generated by the app (or re-open Viber)
Do the usual setup of entering your phone number, letting it sync contacts etc
Once Viber has settled down, close it
Re-open SQLite Debugger
Navigate back to the "viber_data" database
This time, choose Restore Backup
Select the backup file from your SD card
Kill Viber if requested and wait for the restoration
Rinse and repeat for the "viber_messages" database
Once it is all done, reboot your device and hopefully, the next time you open Viber, the old messages & calls are all there! Unfortunately for me, presumably due to the change in ROMs, the photos sent in Viber messages are in my Gallery but NOT in Viber itself.. I suspect this can be fixed if the path is saved somewhere in the messages database - but right now, I'm just glad to have the text back.
If you get repeated errors from Viber during this process, try freezing the app using MyBackup Pro Toolbox (I believe Titanium Backup also has this option)

hello, while yes this way was VERY easy to do thank you so much for that!, the main problem im having is that i was searching for ways to bring back "voice messages" and this appeared to work it even shows that they are back but when i try to listen to *any of them i get this popup saying "you have chosen to delete this voice message" which i never did, any clue how to get voice messages back or how to rip and or convert from a TB file or from the restored folder on device?
Hey thatexan
This video may help in finding the files in the first place: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVdjj1DRwMA
But unfortunately I have no ideas on how to get them to play. I haven't personally tried but if those really are the files, it is most likely that your voice messages are still in your backups but the location to them has not been updated in the Viber... and thus Viber thinks they have been deleted. I never tried fixing the photos issue so I don't have the steps that might help with your voice messages. Some suggestions though:
1) It is possible that in the viber database, it states where to find the photos/voice recordings. If you can find out where then you will need to update the location to point to the correct place
2) OR try receiving a new voice message in Viber and find out where it is stored.. then try putting your old voice recordings there.
3) If just placing your files there isn't enough, try poking around SQL lite to see if you can see the latest voice recording entry in the database and use that as a clue as to what to do - maybe the database needs to be updated with the new location for the old files?
I hope these suggestions help you find the solution. Do reply & share if you find a way to fix it.

THX a lot !!! tryed so much and your way works
but don't need SQlite - just make a backup (i used TITANIUM), put it on your PC, open it, search for these two files, copy them
copy /sdcard/viber/ media
and replace them with an explorer (i used ES)
reboot - done :good:
btw - any idea how to integrate files from desktop-version missing on phone ???
Glad it worked Sorry I have no ideas on the integration with the desktop-version though.

U are a genius .. titanium somehow deleted my backup (I am sure it was my fault, although I'm still not sure if I did anything out of the way) and so I tried all kinds of apps and recovery tools (android and windows) to no avail, finally reached Ur helpful post ... sheer brilliance is what U offer .. and a life saver ... I can't thank U enough .. do take Ur knowledge seriously, I scoured the internet, and no one offers what U do and that means a lot, out of the whole world, U are the only one with such an amazing workaround. Beautifully Brilliant ... :good:

I am in same situation as yours..!!
I have moved to new smartphone and above situation has arised for me to move viber from old smart phone to new smart phone..
Just to reconfirm I have to have follow the backup process through same steps as suggested by you .
can i take backup on google drive through email so that i dont need to play around with sd card switch between old and new phone..
instead through gdrive i can download directly in new phone.. ?
next step would be to install viber on new phone and copy the vober_data and viber_messages file in the given path as suggested by you.
is that the right approach and understanding I am stating correctly ?
will appreciate your revert as well other members benefited by your solution..
To reiterate , your is the soimplest solution / approach compared to what all I have been exploring since last 4 days..no concerete solutions and mostly text backup or paid softwares. you are gem of a person

Thanks to @cla1966 and @kmmc for their instructions here, worked a treat.
Dear,
I got the same problem and follow your instruction step by step but it didn't work to me
I locate the 2 file (viber_data and viber_messages) in Titaniumbackup folder and restore to viber/media then restart but all the messages still didn't appear
I wish I know what's wrong
My phone is Xperia Z5

ZTE Blade L2 apps crashing

I dont know what the problem is and it is driving me crazy, i tried flashing stock rom, a couple of custom roms and the usual fixes i came upon such as android web view or clearing cache and data do nothing. I even checked for bad blocks, the internal and external memory both. The apps that usually crash are facebook messenger, settings, gallery and plenty of others until i restart my phone when they start working for a couple of hours and then crash again. I also lose network sometimes and my alarm does not go off. I am desperate, if anyone has experience with this, your help of any kind would be kindly appreciated.
Just a slight update on the situation, reflashed a stock rom again, still the same problem, gapps crashing, instagram and many other apps, i noticed my gallery wont save pictures either of screenshots or from camera when the problem occurs
Since there is no help for me, does anyone know something i can discover the reason for the crashing, a logger or something like that? I tried watchdog but it also crashes and doesnt provide me with a log
I used logcat to log the errors, but i dont know what they tell, i notice many are sqlite database and sth like that
Did you find a solution? I have the same issue...
I found a lot of those questions but all of them remain unanswered or there are answers like wipe all cache and stuff.
It's really weird, cause this problem is still unanswered, and device doesn't matter, I have a Huawei, for example.

I'm not going to be of any help but I've got the same issue as well right now down to gallery not saving pics. It's frustrating as hell. Ironically,c the apps I use that might help out are crashing. I'm doing the 'turn off, empty cache etc but now I'm going to try re installing busy box pro. Don't ask me, it's a shot in the dark. Why is there nobody out there?
Oh by the way I have a Samsung A5 2017. Custom Rom Revolution
One thing I did prior to flashing Revolution was to remove bloatware with a script.
Have same problem with a ZTE Blade L2, I try flash custom recovery via fastboot and I received this error: partition 'recovery' not support flash. When clear data and cache, the system boot with all files and info, if deleted some files from de internal memory, reboot and the files still remian in the internal memory. Look like the internal memory is blocked and unable to write data. Going to search about his error
