I've certainly given up hope. Sad though, this is a great phone, but looks like it's going to be another failed "in-between" device for developers.

all im saying is people dont know the half of what goes on behind the scenes. myself included. just because people aren't on here every 10 minutes giving updates of everything that goes on does not mean progress has not, and is not, being made.
kernel issues are being worked on, even without official HTC source.
just relax. stop reading the forums every half hour. it'll make the wait easier.

dude, come on. you post once a week about how you're either sick of this phone because it'll never run AOKP or that you've given up hope on AOKP. enough is enough. if you don't like the god damn phone because it runs sense, go buy a ****ing nexus.
...So let me get this straight, you're complaining about a frivolous issue when our source for ICS hasn't dropped? I'll laugh when you have a different phone, we get source, and the development section explodes.

This is so true. Why in the WORLD did you buy an HTC phone that you know runs sense when you DON'T want sense? Nothing is a given. I remember my 1st android phone was an Eris, and one time a leak came out, and the people who flashed it were STUCK. For the LONGEST TIME! Could not go up, down, were totally stuck on the leak. Things happen, and sometimes, things DON'T happen.
I want AOSP too. But not because I don't like sense, otherwise I would not have gotten the Rezound. I like options, that's all.
Lesson? Don't buy an HTC phone if you don't like sense. Simple as that.

Yeah at least my Eris still worked. There were some crappy side effects but in the end it functioned. I'll never forget sitting in the #Eris IRC room with zifnab, justincase/teamandirc and beesley trying to figure out WTF to do and how screwed I was.

I still don't understand why you had me help you through the Stock to S-OFF, ICS Firmware, Custom rom process if you were gonna return it again.
And in my own defense (not that y'all will accept any). LOL
This is my FIRST Android. I'm coming from a JB iPhone for about 4 years and with it being ONE device there was CONSTANT development. So forgive me for seeming a tad impatient. I AM! ROFL
I appreciate all the development and love updates and feedback. BUT, per all you fine gentleman I'll either get a Nexus or shut the fu*k up and wait until the source code for ICS is released.

I'm not returning it...I'm just looking for a second device. I had a warrantied device because of a camera issue so had to walk through all that stuff again.
But I plan on keeping the device even if/when I get the Nexus or SIII or whatever.
I hope it comes. I bought it assuming that it would honestly. I like sense but is bloated so much now. I would rather have more battery and speed that cm would offer. I came from an incredible and had no idea that ril would be a huge obstacle like it is. Oh well live and learn. I have an upgrade coming up anyway so if it doesn't come I may be moving on

I was dying for it because I aways put go launcher on top of sense which made my.phone really laggy specially with a 500 mb or so rpm. Even with Scott's 380 slim and fit de.
Then came newts new release, with a lot of the features go has built in.
Now I could give a ff about aokp. As long as newt is around am at ease.
Sense 4 came a.long way with him. One or more two editions and I see that Rom being the one and only for the rezound.
Don't hold your breath, live with the fact that it will not happen (yay if it does )and work on finding a descent rom that fits ur needs rather than wasting time checking Twitter and xda, work with a specific Rom. Be generous and.patient and polite with your dev and you will reap gold

Unfortunately I'm moving away from the Photon, so will be discontinuing the guides. I'll poke my head in once and awhile and update any pertinent info. Time to pass on the torch...someone should begin another and request it stickied.
I enjoyed the MoPho...but one month after release it's way too quiet in here for me. I crave flashing goodness...and hear only crickets. I will be picking up the SGSII when it hits, and look forward to seeing some of you over there!
Thanks to Yay, Edgan, Kenneth, DCour, Baller, Mikey and others that have taken a stab at this great phone!
Good luck on your next phone. For me I am pretty pleased with how well this phone works stock. The two things I wanted in particular (root and webtop) were achieved amazingly quickly. While I look forward to a sexy fast custom rom with all the bells and whistles (and rock solid stability). I can wait for that, I am more then satisfied that the Photon has lived up to the hype. It's the first time a smart phone has done that for me.

You know that you are allowed to switch it out 3 times which resets your 30 days every time right? guess its too late now but yes you are allowed to do that. That's what I did. they just swap you out a new photon and reset your 30 days. lol I loved it. Does help to have a good guy at sprint to deal with also
But like I said bud, good luck and you are very welcome.
I may do the same thing. I have my girl and her mom on my account I may just give my girl the Photon and use her mom's upgrade on the SGSII. Will see how it goes first though. Really like the Photon, it has a **** ton of potential! Really too bad Motorola can't get their head out of their ass and realize that's what keeps a majority of us around.

This is rather disappointing. It's only quiet in here because the phone is still so young, bootloader was only recently unlocked. As soon as all the hardcore HTC fans start to realize this phone blows both Evo's out of the water, this place will be booming. Even if not, we have some very talented developers making feature rich stable roms. I was a flashaholic as well, but especially on phones such as the Evo well over half of the roms are just plain rubbish and aren't worth flashing. I'd hate to see that happen to the Photon and then deal with all of the people complaining that the phone doesn't work when they just loaded up half-functional software ripped from quality roms by a 12 year old.
Either way, hopefully you'll come back to this phone when we learn what major flaw the latest/greatest Samsung has. I gave up on them after all of their Android devices had major recurring defects, ones that I still see today in my tech centers. Moment/Intercept/Transform had way too little internal memory and the processor wore out quickly. Epic/Captivate/Vibrant all had borked GPS and suffered from random locking up/reboots. Nexus S 4G has terrible signal quality and terrible battery life. Replenish has been their worst yet, charging port shorts out causing it to say it's charging when it isn't and has gotten so hot that I've actually seen them brought in with melted LCD panels and it burnt the customer upon picking it up. I don't know how Samsung has avoided a lawsuit on that one. As for myself, I will not be picking up another Samsung device regardless of how amazing the specs look on paper. They can't seem to get their products fully functional.

I agree completely. I was just looking at the SGS2 reviews and whatnot for the last hour or so. I honestly think the photon already has beat it. I remember my first Samsung phone from ATT, I forget what it was even called actually. I'm sure I could look it up but it was like almost a smartphone. I mean it was, but there was no market or anything and it was just what it was.
I will be staying here unless there is just no action moving forward. But I don't see that happening because like you said this is a great phone and we have only begun to unlock the powers it has, I cannot wait to see numbers when we have a proper kernel source and a proper kernel made for us. Stock my phone has hit over 2500 in Quadrant and I know other people have gotten higher. In Linpack it is hitting higher than some of the highest numbers ever recorded for linpack. So I really can't wait to see what this thing has when it is fully unleashed! It still is just the beginning.

I have my MoPho rooted but there are only 2 roms for it. If you go over and look at the Atrix developers forum they have a ton of support.
The phones are similar, why isn't there much rom development for the Photon as there is the Atrix.
Does anyone know if the Cyanogen Mod is going to be made to work for the photon?
before anyone else says it. GO LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP AND MAKE YOUR OWN ROM
just saving everyone the trouble. i dont really mean it lol

Well that would be useful if I had time to learn everything and create roms myself.
the sgs2 for sprint was announced. this phone was horribly placed in terms of release dates. a lot of people jumped on the evo3d bandwagon, now the sgs2 is coming out soon and not too long after is the release of the new nexus.
once the epic touch is released expect these forums to die down a lot more... unless the et4g sucks... in which we might get a few more users

I'm out of thanks for the day, but you will get one soon enough from me I'm sure. That being said, how hard is 'porting' and what exactly does that mean? I think I get the idea but how is it done really?
I would love to learn how to do this. I am slowly getting into theming a little, but am no where close to releasing anything yet, first off I am a perfectionist and second I am just learning the basics now.
Would love to start reading up on the whole porting aspect of stuff.

Porting is basically making the proper changes for the rom/kernel/theme to be compatible with another device. Just do a Google search and you can find other threads talking about it.
If you don't have any code experience it will be tough going to learn. If you are already trying to learn how to theme than this is good place to start because knowing the directory structure and where things are located will help.

no the tech sites need to read between the lines. was there a nexus being shown off around big v's hq? yea.. wanna guess why? because out of the top four carriers in teh us they are the only ones without a nexus device..
there are rumors of verizon getting a droid prime which if thats the case yet again they will be without a nexus device (cant call it something else) my guess is because they want the hardware but their carrier bloat crap on it
The photon is an awsome phone and with tegra 2 thd games it beats my gfs evo shift hands down. I tried the evo3d and wasnt impressed. Its really buggy and likes to get stuck in 3d mode. The sales rep even told me to go with the photon which was cheaper meaning less commissions. She had came from doing repairs to sales and she said the evo3d was a waste of money and told me all the horror stories they were having at the repair center with them.
I know sprint has some phones comimg out soon that are going to be better but work with what we have first.
I found my old htc tilt and it still has more dev than the photon.
Im someone who isnt all about games. I like preformance, battery life and apps to make my day more productive.

I think a lot of Sprint customers were like me... the MoPho came out, we yawned, and had zero interest in it regardless of specs because it was Motorola... and we all knew Motorola was the essence of pure toxic TiVO-ized evil in AT&T/Verizon-land. They encrypted their bootloaders in ways that couldn't be trivially cracked, and bent over backwards to lock down everything they could.
Then Google bought Motorola, the sun came out, the birds started singing, the sourcecode got released, and suddenly the MoPho became interesting.
Obviously nothing to get too excited about. But, still a decent omen about HTC and their commitment to rolling out 3.6 and ICS.
Maybe we'll actually get this update before summer. Not holding my breath

As some of you may have came across one of my what to do threads ( coming from sprint to Verizon threads ) I was debating between the GNEX and the Rezound. My fiance went with the Razr.
From reading more and more I went with the GNEX, but after looking into the GNEX more and more its seems like a bad move. I went thru amazon wireless so I have 30 days to return the phone if I dont like it. I'll get the GNEX a run and see where she is at. If shes no good, I'll get the rezound. I went with the GNEX because I love AOSP, and dislike Sense.
But my main concern is no S-Off and that can make it or break it for a lot of things. My main thing is if I ever get a brick, it makes it that much harder to recover if at all amongst other things. I can adapt to flashing kernels a certain way no problem.
Long story short, there are a few S-off rezounds out there and even someone selling one now. If we can get that and reverse engineer it, then we have s-off right? Will it ever come?
I'm totally over it now. I've just gotten used to the limitations of S-ON, and it doesn't bother me one bit anymore. I can still do everything I need to do..
IMO it's about as likely as us getting aosp at this point. not alot of interest as i think most of the devs and users are comfortable with what we currently have. not saying we will "never" get s-off but as of now it doesn't look likely.
if this really concerns you, your best bet is to get the gnexus. i have heard miui may almost be ready so we could use the RIL from that for cm9 but we only have one dev working on cm9 and it seems to be more of a part time project from what i understand.
I'd personally bet this phone will never see s-off.
the ppl who can make it possible, for some reason do not like our community (from what I hear)
also, we have htc unlock, so they have about 0 enthusiasm to give us s-off as we already have root.

alot of those devs went to the gneuxs too. the only sort of complaint i have is no aosp options. everything is sense based which is fine for some but it never hurts to have some choice.
Yeah, it's not looking good for s-off.
The good news is that we still have several ROMs and kernels to play with anyway. Enjoy!

No s-off for us we might get lucky in the future but I wouldn't depend on it
Htc's devunlock has screwed us basically due to the fact that it gives developers less incentive to get us s-off

That was probably HTC's intention all along. Less chances of bricking and replacements.
No, Nein, ii eh zen zen, Nyet .
If so many people want it but the devs dont wanna give it.. Why? Isnt s-off THAT much safer? Allows more ease etc etc.
If the rezound had s-off and launched with ICS It would of been alot more popular, especially for the devs.
true, but why not still strive for it? I understand why they dont but why woudnt they? Guessing by the comment people saying its not the premier device etc etc ...so then based on that then guessing there isnt many good devs for these device?

The rezound spec wise blows the gnexus away. Yes we have "good devs" but most of them are only interested in sense. As of now there is no aosp options. The devs who are "fluent" with cracking hboots "soff" are all on the gnexus.

It takes a ton of work to "try" to break into a device to gain S-OFF... It's not an easy task and many times takes many people trying different tactics over a long period of time (like months) to accomplish if they are even successful then.
yeah I dont know whats into getting S-off I didnt mean GIVE like it was a 10 min process.. but people are always saying th devs dont want us to give it to us. AS in spend the time to crack it. Long story short. thanks haha

De-sensed ROMs will get very (VERY) close to AOSP
(like this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507670
And the Rezound is a better phone in my opinion.
After having several Samsungs, I couldn't go back.
Here were some of my inhibitions to getting the GNEX (and why I didn't get it -- independent of being a lover of HTC phones and build quality)
1) No data and voice at the same time unless you're on 4g. I use 3g all of the time to save battery (I use it VERy extensively for work and need constant - but not always super high bandwidth - internet)
2) Weaker/poor antennas (way lower reception than Rezound, way weaker GPS antenna - although it probably does stay awake when the screen is off on GNEX)
3) Did I mention that it's a Samsung?
The only things that I WISH I had from the GNEX are NFC (to use Google Wallet - that **** is the FUTURE) and maybe the massive display (which has the bottom portion if it wasted with virtual buttons anyway - so it's not as 'big' as it says it is).
I also, however, am a Sense lover. So much so that if I go on AOSP ROMs on my phones (like Eris and Incredible and others), I wind up going to Sense after several days or weeks. I can't stand how POORLY refind AOSP is, how LESS smooth it is (yes, I said it.... Choppier and LESS smooth than sense, despite the file sizes), and I miss all of the Sense Apps.
The Sense dialer is unparalleled. Some 3rd party apps come close but.... nothing is Sense.
Swiping screens feels much more natural on Sense than ANY other launcher, save the iOS devices. I remember having an Incredible next to a Droid X (rooted/overclocked droid X) and laughing at how CHOPPY swiping screens and moving the app drawer was with the X versus how SMOOTH it was with the Incredible. iPhone users laugh at how un-smooth AOSP is.
The GNEX is a lot faster than other AOSP phones and is quite a bit smoother. So I give it that. But It's a Samsung. I can't go back to that dark place.
I have noticed that the Rezound ROMs were coming out fast and furious, new ROMs, updates and improvements on an almost daily basis. And then 2 or 3 weeks ago it just stopped. Lots of active threads in the Dev section, but nothing really new has come out?
Are devs waiting for the OTA, which won't be here for another few months, or has the Rezound just run its course and the new phones that are coming out are taking the lead and Dev time now?
The Rezound is great, but lets face it, it is now second tier as their replacements are already out, and they won't official get ICS till July or August, making them even less desirable to Devs to spend time on a phone that will likely stop being sold before too long?
My fear is that the Rezound will take too long to get ICS OTA and source code released, and by the time it is, the phone will be on its way out the door, there are newer better phones out that Devs will feel it is better to spend their time on, etc...
Thoughts?
Hasn't stopped. I know Scott's working on a one x rom, Newt just released an update and Joelz is rebasing his rom which should be awesome.
I have been working hard to get Team Eos AOSP working on my phone, but still stuck with RIL like everybody else at this point. Once there is source for ICS, development will go ballistic again. Don't worry.

Even though there will be a ton of newer better phones on the market, do you really see things picking back up on an "older" phone like the Rezound?
well there's great significance when it comes to updating immediately to the newest leaks, after that period it's back to timed updates and changes
new phones will slowly kill, but it's not that development slowed down, there just hasn't been any trigger for another immediate and curt developmental spike

I still see some activities going on in the Inc development forums, so I'd say yes
The Rezound is a great phone with a great Dev community and in my opinion still has plenty of life left in it.
We had 3 leaks in a matter of a month. Nothing lately so nothing much to update.

Yeah, of course. Dude, this thing is barely more than 6 months old!

Development is still going pretty hard behind the scenes, I don't see it dropping off for a few months at least. The devs are still working just as hard as they ever have, its just that people seem to complain a lot about wiping and reflashing every few days, and as roms progress the updates are fewer and further between. There's also a lot that goes on behind the scenes that isnt posted on the forums, in the last couple of weeks, last three weeks I guess, I think the biggest advances and accomplishments on the rezound yet have happened, in my opinion. Most of which hasn't been posted yet because they're tieing up loose ends.
I do think you're right about the fact that a lot of us will be moving on to New devices shortly after kernel source is released, when a quad core beast hits Verizon with super specs, something probably the next step above the one s and one x.
But I think we havent begun to see this phone's potential yet and with another leak or OTA and kernel source its really going to be a beast. I could see it having a pretty long lifespan kinda like the OG Droid. A lot of us will probably buy new hardware eventually that may take time to get rooted and s off and this phone will be capable enough to feed our custom rom and kernel addictions until the new phones we get are exploited.

I'm also thinking that if Newt was asked to remove the tweaks from his ROM because "there were too many similar ROMs", perhaps the same was asked of Bored which would personally p!ss me off. Who cares if some ROMs are very similar, they all have little differences.
If that's really the case, maybe Scott was asked the same. After all, CleanROM, CleanROM Pro and CleanROM DE are all the same but with more stuff removed.

I've seen no evidence of a fully working RIL...everything is "we're close."
Wow. IMO this phone is just too darn good to waste my money on a retail upgrade (and marginal one at that).
I came from the D1 and within months I was constantly flashing roms and tweaking trying to whip a few extra ponies into it.
Otherwise, in 5 months with the Rezound I've flashed 2-3 times and just s-off'd this weekend. I've had basically no issues and it's nice not to have to babysit my phone to get it to run the way I want it to. Just rock solid, and the development is great.
I can appreciate that everyone is looking for something different, but myself I just need a couple of good roms and I'm set.
Not gonna lie, if in another month or two, we don't have anything new, this phone is getting traded out.

He does have a point. Look at our roms. Mostly all the same minus themes, same tweaks all across the board. Whats different? What stands out ? .
Im not flaming any devs or saying they should do more, they do a fine job actually. But its true. We lack true options. Sense 4 yes, its different and good but still needs working. Aosp is still being worked on and no one knows if itll get to work in the end or not.
I see newer phones dev section, say the one s, there flying with tons of roms, aosp. And im sure kernel dev will rise once source is out.
I know ril is our problem, but still. You cant fault someone esle giving up, nobody expected us tobe just stuck with sense. I know i didnt, but ill deal with it in the meantime

Using a bolt ATM that I thought would never get any good ROMS, well its got as many options as any phone out there. Pretty much all HTC phones due to the boot loader if nothing else are going to have good dev sections. If u wanna see a sad dev section check out all moto phones with exception of the atrix and that is only BC they found a unloclable BL or something of that sort in a leak.

I'm just saying if development just stalls then I might leave this phone, I do want a popular dev'ed phone without it being the GNex.

Protekk or dmeadows posted on twitter that the RIL was complete but they were working on the firmware to match it, and that was the hold up.
