Boot Loop Fix without factory reset (data erase)...Completely Stock Atrix - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All the boot loop problems I searched for are all rooted/flashed/etc.
My sisters Atrix is stock on 2.2, getting continues boot loop all of sudden this morning. Battery pulls are no help.
Is there anyway I can fix this without a factory reset?
Probably the same chance Poland has winning the Euro 2012...

Not sure if possible.

Won't go in safe mode. Tried clearing the cache partition. Nothing helped.
If I could get into safe mode I'm sure I could fix it, phone has not been messed around with so probably some stupid app caused this.
Very frustrating.

The hell are you talking about? This isn't Windows! The only way an app could mess with the system would be if it had root. And if you're completely stock, you won't have that.

Can't a rogue/virus/malware app mess with the system?
What could be causing this if its stock?
I'm more familiar with windows/ms dos.

Well, my money would be on Poland vs your Atrix,...
Anyway, what MIGHT work is to save the /data partition then follow the various instructions to reflash from square one (and end up with as close as you can get to what it was), then restore /data and pray. You might need (or want) to put an unlocked bootloader and real recovery on while you are doing all this. You should not need to touch /sdcard.so just leave hi, alone.
Start here for some suggestions on what is going on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690842
Also, there are some good stickies in the General Atrix area.
You will really need to understamd what you are doing here, and not just follow a recipie. So spend some time understanding how fastboot and recovery work.
P.S., if you have an external sdcard in, pull that and see if it helps.
EDIT: If there is something super important on it, I would get somebody who knows what they are doing to extract iy for you.

I don't want to mess around with it too much since its my sisters phone. There's some important things on there but I guess life can go on without them.
If I do factory reset and update it to GB, is there anyway to choose 2.3.4 instead of 2.3.6 without rooting it. Read too many complaints about 2.3.6....
Why won't it let me into safe mode? Hold both volume buttons down after dualcore logo when the motorola animation starts right....

Did factory reset, phone working again.
There's no blur widgets and lot less icons on the phone than originally bought brand new, contacts came back eventually but for some reason all Google Plus profiles were added to contacts, never had that before.
Surprisingly all my pics and videos are still there which is nice.
Probably take me a week to get it even to close to tip top shape as before. :\
Wished I remember all the little tweaks I did for the last year.

[Q] Need help fixing my Thunderbolt Please! (Rooted)

Hi all. i'm having trouble finding a specific thread to help me solve my problem. (I'm not too good with rooting, and should have not messed with it in the first place!)
Anyways let's get to my problems:
So I needed to take my phone to the Verizon Store, and without thinking went straight to the Factory Reset thing. Now everytime I try booting up my phone it gets stuck on the custom bootup screen and freezes during part of the animation and just stays there.
I have read things that say try going into hboot and doing recovery, but all's it asks me to do is update, then has me reboot. It doesn't update anything as it still does the same exact thing.
My question is, can someone please help guide me through the process of returning my Thunderbolt back to STOCK. I really am unsure of what I need to download, and where I need to put things, and what I need to name them etc: Clearly I need to think twice before rooting my phone again.
Also when I go to plug my Thunderbolt into my computer via USB my computer cannot recognize the device, any suggestions why?
Thanks so much! Really really need help!
First off all it sounds like you have a pg05img.zip file on the root of the sdcard. Only way to remove it now is pulling the sdcard out and putting it in a conputer and deleting that file. Then you should be able to boot and/or get into recovery.
If that's not the case then i don't know what's preventing you from getting into recovery. Although, just a factory reset should not have caused this anyway.

How did you initially Root your device? I assume revo since so many have now. Like mentioned above make sure you check your sdcard and ensure there is no PG05IMG.zip on it. After you have checked your sdcard for that file and deleted it, or maybe it is not there try to get into recovery.
Pull your battery out and then hold Volume down + power. Where does that get you? Hopefully you made a nandroid of your device after you rooted. If you followed a guide that was most definitely recommended. If this takes you to recovery just do a restore.
If you get restored there are some very good guides that Google will lead you to on how to unroot and return to stock.
1Sorry for the super late response, I'm going to try everyone's advice now, thanks so much for the help!
a factory reset will not unroot the phone. If your going back to stock, you have to unroot it. If you bring it to verizon rooted, they may deny you service...
as stated above, just search google or here for instructions how to return to full stock

[Q] Stuck in boot cycle...not a wcdma problem

I Have restorted to being the noob that signs up to ask a question...The other day I was driving (pre-root) and I look down to notice my phone had power cycled on its own. I thought it would come back one, boy I was wrong....
It spiralled into endless boot cycle. It would at first reboot get to the 4g screen and then back to the htc...over and over. I was able to get into Hboot, and atempt to do a factory reset that didnt help because it became a endless reboot that way as well.
Now before any of you say "why dont you warranty replace the phone" Im a VZW agent, alas we dont have a warranty on our phones when it comes to our concessions lines...
Now, at that point I said enough is enough and I delved into the world of rooting. I self taught everything within a few hours. I had my phone unlocked and ready to go. I picked Ineffabile (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420513) to use as a rom, I followed the procedure to a T it installed correctly, but then when it came back on everything seemed to work fine...for about 5 minutes and then it happened agian a power cycle all over again. and again...and again. It now comes on works for about 5mins and then reboots.
Im at a complete loss at this point I have gone back into the SD card and deleted the ph98 file etc.... I just dont know what to do. I need this phone to work.
Any help is appreciated Thank you so much!
I know you said it's not the wcdma problem but will your phone stay booted with the back cover off?
Else I'd ruu back to stock. Could try the different radios and see if it helps.
If you want to try the older radios and are on the OTA you'll have to hexedit you mainver. There's a guide if you look.
older radios? Im still new to this so I applogize...
A couple weeks ago there was an OTA (over the air update) that updated the radios - what controls the calls part of your phone and can affect reception and other stuff, I don't know everything it does. So if you wanted to try the older ones there's a thread somewhere, I think by con247, that has the older ones.
Here's a couple guides to help you get familiar with rooting stuff:
http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all-things-root/389787-beginners-guide-rooting-android-devices.html
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/129648-quick-intro-rooting-those-new-rooting.html
You can try flashing the kernel again. Sometimes bootlooping is a kernel issue, although it doesn't seem to be the cause of your situation.
How about insurance? Do you have that? Can you still get it?

I dont have insurance =/ and cant get it either. Im trying to find the radios, and what kernal should I be flashing? because I cannot find the one that should match the rom im using.
What I dont understand is why the phone powers on, works for a few moments like nothing is wrong what so ever. Then freezes and reboots.
Oh, there's a new way of packing a ROM with a script that then installs the kernel so I guess it's all together now on Ineffabilis. Here's a link to the MikMik forum where they still have the stock rooted kernel as a separate download:
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...-Beats-Tweaks-2-01-605-11&p=164906#post164906
Just take off the part of the name before PH98IMG.zip, put it on your external sd card. Do a battery pull, then reboot into bootloader by holding volume down + power. It will flash it and I think reboot. Then delete the PHzip file after that.
Don't know if it will help...
Oh... when you flashed Ineffabilis, did you restore any data from a backup? If yes, try flashing again and not restoring any data, just set up everything again manually. Also, if you restored any data from another phone's backup that could have caused problems. Basically you don't want to restore data from a different ROM.

This is a clean SD card, and I didnt create a backup because I couldnt get the phone past Hboot when it was doing boot cycles previous to the root. I re-ruu'd right now. And im starting from scratch. I used clockwork before, Im trying amon ra now.

Why Oh Why??

There is probably some ridiculous, overwhelmingly simple reason for the answer to this question, but take into account that its coming from the guy who has been trying install a ROM for a week unsuccessfully, Anyway, enough personal degradation for the moment, and on to business. It seems to me that every time I have to .spf it gets easier and faster(imagine that). RSDlite is such a perfect format flashing, so why has no one thought of a way to flash ROMS via RSDlite? I understand that getting your proverbial elbows greasy is the fun of this, but for the helpless and hopeless, such as myself, there should be a super simple segue into cool techy stuff for us too!! I'm kidding, I'm not that buried.....I think.
Why would you sbf a rom when it only only takes a couple of minutes to flash a rom?
1, are you rooted?
2, do you have tenfar bar installed?
3, is the rom of choice on SD card?
Where are you having your trouble what rom? How are you trying it? It is pretty simple.

Okay, looks like you created a new thread about the same issue...but moving on.
RSD Lite is a Motorola tool, that was initially just supposed to be used by retailers (like VZW and Radioshack) so that they could reset people's phones rather than having to ship the to Moto and send them back to the customer, or for VZW and others to wipe devices and resell them as "refurbished" units. The reason we can't use RSD to create ROM's is the SBF files are signed by Motorola. So if we were to modify them in anyway or try to make our own, it would refuse the files and not flash the device.
Now, from your other thread you posted this:
MathiasKnight said:
Sorry about that, I must have been excited. Unfortunately I spoke too soon. Either that or I'm not meant for this, which I hope is not the case seeing that I'm getting my degree in IT. I finally get bootloader, with ROM and GAPPS placed accordingly(I opted for Eclipse). When the zip is finished uploading and I see confirmation that all was installed correctly, I begin the reboot......and it takes new to an unactivated Droid X2. I've created nandroid after nandroid, with different methods and different ROMS, and I either land there or with a signature error, even in bootstrap. I'm gonna try one more time before I hang up my guns. Maybe.....

Could you please outline everything you do, step by step? After you SBF you should have to activate your phone anyway, so that after you root, install bootstrap and then boot into that and apply the ROM and GAPPs the phone should already be activated.

The only time I have gotten any response that remotely resembled success was the first time I used System Recovery, but the status bar was incredibly slow, like not moving basically, so I figured after about 25 minutes something was amiss...again. Yes I'm rooted, don't know what a tenfar bar is yet but I'm on it now, and I've got a variety of .zip's that are supposed to be compatible with 2.3.4, and I'm sure they are. I was really kind of joking about the .sbf, but I still think it would be a viable alternative.

Okay, so you've SBF'd to 2.3.4. Rooted using whatever method, and you have the BootStrap recovery installed yes? Then you boot into recovery, wiped data, wiped cache and wiped dalvik cache, then tried installing a zipped ROM from you sd card, and upon restarting you get stuck at the moto M screen?
A couple things. First, when you wipe the dalvik cache (for roms or any mods) the phone has to rebuild that before it can actually boot into Android. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to 5 minutes or upwards. If you've gone 10 minutes and still nothing, all you need to do is pull the battery (so the phone powers off), reinstall the battery, DONT TURN THE PHONE ON, and then plug your phone into your wallcharger. After you plug in your phone, it'll turn itself on, go to the M screen and then go back into the BootStrapRecovery. From there you can redo the steps, wipe everything and then reinstall. However, IF you boot into the stock Android Recovery and wipe cache and data from there, you mucked it up and you'll have to SBF and restart the process.
ALSO, from your previous thread you said you were trying to install Eclipse. What version are you trying? 1.xx eclipse will work on 2.3.4, but Eclipse 2.xx will only work on 2.3.5, which could be another reason you are having issues.

[Q] Was stuck at boot, rooted s Razr. Have recovered. Need original ICS rom/HELP

Here's the story.
Rooted Stock RAZR.
Changed Build Prop to Galaxy Nexus and google.
Overwrote system files with the huge GAPPS 4.2 pack, excepting the apps folder. (My biggest mistake)
Backed up my launcher, transferred 4.2 launcher to system/app.
Overwrote some app files, not all.
Downloaded a Safestrap, -I do not believe I properly set this up.
Downloaded Clockworkmod, told it I had setup a recovery, then created a backup of rom.
The phone rebooted. I assumed that meant the backup was successful.
Nothing happened. Like the genius I am, factory reset phone.
Phone successfully loaded, but I got stuck at the welcome screen.
Put myself into bootloader, hit recovery, I think I wiped the cache and then did another factory data reset.
Somehow got back to the main screen. Phone was working properly.
Went and installed some more apps, including velvet chrome gmail gms and others.
Downloaded boot something or other app (cant remember name) redownloaded clockworkmod and safestrap. (Still not set up properly, obviously.)
Rebooted.
Got stuck in boot for hours. Could not get recovery up
Finally got into recovery.
Phone still sitting here, I do not dare touch it.
Yes, I made every possible wrong choice I could have. I did not have any clue what I was doing and tampered with a phone I don't have the money to replace.
The question is, can you help me xda forums. My phone can safely boot I hope as it is now in recovery.
I need to get this safe again. I do have an original copy of.my old.build prop, but not one of the original system files/some apps.
I would also really like to turn my RAZR into a Nexus
Maybe just the homescreen.
Going to my buddies house tonight. He has a computer I can use.

To restore your phone you need to SBF (Check out this guide if you are unfamiliar with how to use SBF forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23453478) back to stock using the SBF 4.04 ICS build 6.7.2-180 which can be found here from http://www.droid-life.com/2012/07/1...azr-ice-cream-sandwich-4-0-4-build-6-7-2-180/. Next take a look at this guide forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840296 particulary the sections on root and recovery. Thank you so much. I literally have asked around the web for hours with little to no help of any kind, and have been unable to come across resources on my own. I had completely forgotten about SBFing. That will be my savior. Not only that, but you have provided the links I have so. Needed. also, someone recommended I flash Cyanogenmod. I found these two resources on my own:

I'm wondering, are my system files still ok after overwriting? Could the problem only be based on the changes to the build prop or something similar, so that I don't have to destroy my phone further?

It is possible that the build.prop edits you made caused your problems, but I would still recommend SBF'ing back to stock so you have a clean slate to start with. Also don't install anything else that could make things worse, until you are back to stock like I suggested. While you can use a MAC to flash SBF's its a lot easier and more reliable to use a computer running Windows.

About to read through the articles. My battery is dead. I've looked through advice including hotwiring the charger to the battery but...Razr batterys can't be removed without voiding warranty.

Did you try plugging your phone into your charger and leaving it plugged in for a little while to let it charge? Also try plugging the phone into your computer and having it charge off of one of the USB ports.

Ok. Thank you. You have no idea how much less stressed I am about this. I have been trying to let it charge. I don't have a standard charger, I use a broken lapdock, which does charges the same exact way. Will charging with a computer give me different results? (This is not a priority question, I don't NEED you to answer it asap or anything.) Please stick around if I encounter more issues. It's nice to receive help rather than being flamed for being a noob. I had to get started somewhere. With yours and others help, I have gained many resources for flashing/rooting. I am still going to avoid trying to SBF if I can(Though I believe it is the avenue I'm taking, the only way I wouldn't is if I can safely recover and fixing build prop fixes my issues), as I REALLY don't want to lose root, as I had someone else root for me in the first place. I really need a god damn pc. Thanks again.

If your lapdock is broken then it may not allow your phone to charge correctly, I would recommend trying to charge it through your computer's USB ports as it will probably make a difference. And don't worry about asking questions heck we all start out knowing nothing and needing to ask questions, and what's good is your exploring and asking good questions not just demanding people do things for you. I understand SBF'ing back to stock may seem scary but as long as you follow the directions properly you'll be fine. Also by going to back to stock it will give you a clean build.prop free of any changes you made. For future reference always make a nandroid before making any build.prop changes no matter how small it may seem. As always I'm happy to help out and will be around for any questions you may have .

Try the procedure again, other then that you could also try this guide by ifixit Installing Motorola Droid RAZR Battery.

[Q] Anyway to disable factory reset after 10 failed attempts to unlock phone?

Was just wondering if there is anyway to disable this because it is very annoying. Friend got a hold of it and thought it would be funny to reset it. Its useless in my opinion. Anyways is it possible?

I'm wondering the same thing my brother. And can it be done unr00ted? I don't want someone being malicious screwing my phone over.

There was another thread started about this shortly after the phone was released. Is it true it erased your SD card as well?? There were a couple reports that it had for them. I made sure to back up my phone and routinely continue to do so in the off chance that someone does get a hold of it and unknowingly erases everything. This is a TERRIBLE "feature" and someone had said there was a file on a previous phone they had that was able to be edited to disable this, but as far as I know hasn't been found on the G3 yet. Though I'm not a dev by any means I plan on diving into the system files at some point, and hopefully can find something online to point me in the right direction... Believe me, I'm sure if I or someone else does find a way to disable it you will definitely see a thread for it, more than likely in the "General" section :good: Worst.....Feature.....Ever.....
I am OK with the 10 times then wipe...
If I had a friend do that to me, we would no longer be friends.

Yes it is true about the ten times wiping the sd card. I tried it for myself bored at an airport and it wiped everything. Would love to turn this off somehow.

See this is horrible. I can kind of understand the security purpose behind it and figured it would only wipe internal storage but SD as well with no option to turn off?! This should be something you CHOOSE to happen after 10 failed attempts. Especially if you have that one A$$hole "friend" (I'm sure a lot of you are picturing him now ) who thinks something like this would be hilarious.....Every time....

I was on my last attempt one day while my phone was in my pocket, using knock code. So this makes me nervous about wiping it again accidentally.

Yes... This actually happened to my M8 while it was in my pocket. The screen came off sleep and I pocket swiped the wrong pattern. When I pulled the phone out EVERYTHING was gone.
I thought it was ridiculous that it gave you 10 tries... now that I know it wipes your phone, that's scary and not nearly enough.
I would much rather it just give you 3 or 4 tries and then require a backup pin or for you to type in or your google account password. It should never be able to wipe my phone unless I tell it too.
wow that is a serious shipping bug. I'm taking my phone lock off right now. They designed with guest log-on they so you hand your phone to somebody else to use and they designed it like that? Sounds like another enhancement for g3 tweakbox...set failed logon attempts to 10,000 with time delays in between.

I found this http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.hamzah.lockscreentweakbox

I installed the xposed module. I set it to unlimited but I also had the g3 tweakbox setting to show number of attempts. The number was still at ten max and I was unable to (can't wipe no backup) try more than 10 attempts.
After five, mine requires you to type a phrase to continue, so pocket shouldn't do it. And after that, you can use a pin or account info by selecting the bottom button that says forgot my code.
I certainly agree it should be a setting though.
Sorry this an old thread, but I would like to know as well. My toddler sometimes get a hold of my phone, and it ends up being factory reset. I hate this feature. If I have a issues with someone taking my phone and trying to access to it, I rather go through Google (phone locater) and erase it from there

The following is out of the box thinking and speculative since it's possibility of success depends on what happens if you completely wipe your recovery partition so that you no longer had any kind of recovery: neither stock nor custom. And knowing you couldn't easily get recovery back without flashing the 10B TOT. There'd be other possibilities to get it back, but I'd just flash the TOT under most circumstances.
You would have to be temporarily be rooted to do so.
This is the way I would go about it if I were interested in such a thing:
1. Restore to stock 10B KitKat by flashing the 10B_03 TOT using the .DLL that's extracted from the 35B KDZ (assuming you're on the 35B or higher stock unrooted ROM).
2. Root the phone with the Stump app.
3. Use TWRP Manager from the Play Store to install TWRP custom recovery.
4. Create a flashable zip from the individual partitions extracted from whichever stock ROM KDZ you wanted to be on, such as 47A Marshmallow.
5. Leave the stock recovery partition out of the zip, and adjust the updater-script to wipe the existing recovery partition on the phone.
6. Flash the ROM zip you've created. Once you exit TWRP, you won't have a recovery partition anymore, which as far as I know would be what would perform the actual factory reset. You'd still have the download mode partition because that's separate.
If someone triggered what would normally be a factory reset by guessing the wrong lock code 10 times, the phone would reboot and likely maybe have a blinking LED which would require you to either pull the battery or hold the power button in for 10-15 seconds or so to force the phone to boot.
If I were going to test such a method, I'd use the built in LG Backup to back up all my user apps and data and move everything I want to save from my internal storage to my MicroSD card, then I'd eject the card and leave it until done testing.
Then upon following the steps to do all this, I'd test the theory out immediately by setting a secure lock screen and using the wrong password/PIN/pattern 10 times and make sure you can recover the way I described by pulling the battery or holding down the power button long enough.
No sense restoring apps or even putting your Google account info in while testing this.
At the worst, you'd have to flash the 10B TOT or any KDZ such as 47A again to recover, or very worst have to follow QHSUSB_BULK 9008 mode recovery directions which would also make use of the TOT file.
If you decide you're brave enough to test, I'd be willing to make the flashable zip for you.
You can uncheck "Android Device manager" under Settings --> Security --> Device Administrators ... i done for Lenovo vibe mobile !!!
