Any one know of a way to force the atrix to stay on 2g. I have tried the switch Widgets, in settings, selecting GSM network, and entering the *#*# stuff. I have 2 of these phones. One rooted and one is not. Neither will work. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I was gonna suggest that you move to a remote area like Alaska... I see that you've already tried that.
I can get mine to switch in the network settings, but after a while it always goes back. I'd like to know the answer as well.
That was the first one I tried. LOL.
But honestly that's why I want to do this, because 3g network isn't the best here.
I might be as good with carrier pigeons, or better yet eagles.
Thanks for the thought.
What rom are you using?
In CM7 there is an option, but I don't know if its in the stock rom.
Wireless & Networks -> Mobile networks -> Use only 2G
In my experience, you have to have an unlocked and a rooted phone. Using clockwork mod, you have to load a different radio rom. I used N_01.100.00R_gb_retail_22sept2011.zip. But my atrix is on att. I believe att's radio roms are locking us out of the feature to manually switch bands.
Same here at&t atrix using n 0.100.00r
And in alaska

I've tried cm7 and other roms, build prop tweaks, etc... I thought it was the network, but several of my other phones switch over just fine. I have 2 atrix phones, one bootloader unlocked, rooted etc.... the other is factory, brand new. They both do the same.

Flashed this radio, and can now switch band with no problems.....n 0.100.00r
Android services menu (be careful) on froyo and ginger bread stock roms, Dial *#*#4636#*#* Here you will find a setting to change bands. Make sure you note the default (cdma/prl something, something) . The terminology would make you think Verizon (cdma) but that is not what cdma, means in this context, means. However gsm, in this context, does mean 2g. Cdma means "prefer 3g and drop down to 2g".prl means "preferred roaming list" which does not mean roaming, but what are the nearby towers to flip flop between. Anyway, this is all from memory and am hoping this is enough to address you request.
or look under settings (if not running stock), data, and 2g is there, as devs have enabled this in the native user ui.

Yeah l, that's right, but with the original radio, that process didn't work. Thanks for the response.

Hello,
I am coming from an Inspire 4g phone have been using the Not since its release date. I am having a similar issue with my Note that the Inspire had, but I am unable to work-around the issue the way the Inspire did.
My issue is that while my phone has great cell tower signal, my phone drops into Edge connectivity constantly. Prior to my Note upgrade, my Inspire would do the same thing, but I had a couple of work arounds I could do to lock back into 4G (HSPA+).
A) I could reboot the phone and the overwhelming majority of times it would go back to H+.
B) I could turn the mobile data radio off and then back on and again, the majority of the times, it would go back to H+.
C) The fix I used most often was to go into the phone dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*. This brings up a back door to the testing screens and I could access the phone information section. In phone information, I could change the preferred network type and I would change from the default WCDMA preferred to either GSM ONLY or WCDMA ONLY depending on the area I was in. This not only work with near 100% success, it also locked the signal into H+ for longer periods of time.
Now that I have my Note, I have the same issue with the phone dropping to Edge service. However, when I try each of the 3 methods above, including *#*#4636#*#*, my phone stays locked into Edge. I can not get it to change.
I called AT&T about the issue and they explained to me that the phone will lock into the stronger signal, so if Edge is stronger, that is what I will get. I told them about my workaround with my Inspire and they could not give an explanation why it worked with that phone. I did talk them into re-sending the network information to my phone while on the call. They sent the information and while I was sitting still with full bars of signal strength, the phone miraculously popped into 4G service. I asked why it would change from Edge to H+ when they sent the network information since I didn't move to affect the signal and they could give me no explanation.
Does anyone have an idea how to make the Note ignore Edge service if H+ is available? If I can't figure this out, the Note is going back and I will stay with my Inspire 4G for now.
Thanks,
Roger

As stated, this is not available in stock rom nor TPC Note 2, which I am currently running. However, based on what I remember seeing on other Samsung phones, the *#*#4636#*#* feature I reference is supposed to do the same thing.
Thanks for the replies. Looks like the RAT feature is locked. Using the Rogers Radio seems to fix the problem, but breaks video playback at this time.
I found it an other thread, so I don't take any credit for it as someone else posted it, but I have confirmed it works on my Galaxy Note
*#*#197328640#*#* > debug screen > phone control > network control > band selection
You need to do this after each reboot though as it does not stick.
To work around this I have made a contact and only left out the last * in it, so all you do is use that as a speed dial and you are good to go
Installed the .211 leak last night. I normally keep my phone on 3G to save my battery unless I need 4G.
I just went to change my connection and all I can choose from is Global or CDMA/LTE.
Can you not run CDMA without LTE on the latest leak?

Try setting it manually:
Dial *#*#4636*#*#
Or install phone info app from google play
Go to phone info and in network menu change to cdma only and see if it works.
If not, back to your previous setup. Just make sure you get note of it before playing around.

I tried to set it in the network menu, but my only options are to choose from "Global" or "CDMA/LTE"
It looks like verizon has done away with letting the user choose from 3G or LTE.
I'm pretty upset with that considering my battery won't make it through half a day unless I'm on 3G...
If I dial that number, will that put me on 3G only? I'm on LTE, I just prefer CDMA for battery conservation.

Dial that number then press phone information. Change network type to CDMA PRL. It'll keep it on 3G. If you need 4G, dial the number again and change it back.
Just be careful with what you click

Yikes! I hope that's fixed on the OTA! I'm always in a 4G/LTE area, but run CDMA 99% of the time because LTE will drain my battery in under 6hours. On 3G/CDMA, I can usually get 14-16 hours. Glad I just bought an external 1800mAh battery pack.
I'm using the app called "phone info" that was suggested earlier in this thread.
App works great and let's we switch to cdma only without a hitch, and but lte in enabled when I reboot my phone.
I also hope that this minor issue is corrected in the final product version. My phone will drain in a matter of about two or three hours of LTE the way I use it.

to make life even easier, download an app called minimalistic text. Once downloaded use it to create your our 3G/4G widget that once clicked on launches the phone info app, seems to work alright for the time being. but a dedicated 3g/4g switch would be great i dont see how something like this could be overlooked by moto/verizon
Just want to note that I'm having the same issue. I cannot find a way to turn off 4g, I tried dialing the 4636 number and it actually dialed the phone rather than launching the config menu. I'd like to be able to disable 4g at times since I am often in an area without 4g.
Hey
I'm using Photon on gsm network in israel and having some problems with signal strength and connection to network.
My carrier work on HSDPA 2100MHz\850MHz, The photon should match.
The problem happens in closed area where the signal are low, but other phones works without problems.
is it possible to flash radio from the atrix? In the developers section there's a lot of options. maybe it's can solve my problems
אהלן אבישי, איזה כיף לפגוש ישראלי בפורום הזה
I'm using Photon 4G in Israel too. Nice to meet you!
I think that changing the radio firmware won't change its capabilities. (שינוי התוכנה של הרדיו לא יעזור לשנות את היכולות של הרדיו).
Maybe the other phones that work without problems use the 2G network. You know, Orange, Cellcom, Golan Telecom and probably other operators support 2G also, unlike Pelephone etc..
Maybe it's time to take advantage of the cellular revolution in our country and find a cheaper operator that supports 2G. But first make sure that 2G is what you miss, So you won't leave your current operator to no avail, if you decide to leave it.
Anyhow, don't flash files made for other devices. After all Photon 4G and Atrix are only like each other. They ain't the same.
שבוע טוב!
Thanks for the answer.
I have no meaning to change the capabilities of the phone, I assume that l need to get more from our phone and the frequencies he work with.

Well, I know nothing about changing frequencies. I think that increasing them may be helpful, but it could be very unhealthy, and will eat your battery power. Moreover, I didn't see any custom radio for the Photon.
First time posting on here so please don't tear me a new ass if I'm doing something wrong lol.
I just got a Galaxy Note I (SGH-I717) on AT&T.
Initially I was having problems with reception and 4G and not getting LTE at all. I finally got LTE working my setting up the PTA APN and by dialing *#2263# and selecting a different preferred band (I chose "LTE ALL" in the LTE sub-menu and saved it). I put the SIM back in, powered the phone back up and LTE was working. However my signal bars haven't gone past one bar while on LTE. I get data, and can even send and receive MMS/SMS, but cannot send/receive calls.
Someone please tell me if I did something wrong or am leaving out any vital info.

Perhaps the radio should be updated. The latest official ATT radio is UCMD3.
Check if you have it under settings/about/phone status/baseband. It works on all builds but is the newest radio which improves signal sometimes.

Those appear to be as follows in the link I posted. The only difference i saw was BEARER: LTE (default is unspecified) play with this one.. that was different in the post.
Other then that, I know ATT and Tmobile only use LTE Band 4 in the USA anyways.
So LTE ALL under the service menu wouldnt help. Was your coverage always that bad?
Please someone with ATT help this poor soul out. I'm at wits end. Usually this would be something to bug your service provider about. Myabe they can refresh something on your account, or give you a newer SIM card at your local store.

Yes, unfortunately service has always been this bad. I have called AT&T several times/been to the AT&T store and talked to a representative and they have done the following:
- Checked/rechecked my IMEI number (it always matches)
- Checked and rechecked my SIM number (before AND after I received a new SIM card
- Unregistered/Re-registered my phone with the towers
- Called a tech out to the tower to make sure nothing is going on the them (I know its not, my buddies all have LTE running fine on their devices)
Thank you so much, scariola. You've been a helped all you can.
RESOLVED
I believe I have fixed the problem.
I dialed *#2263# to get to the Band Selection screen. I already had selected "LTE ALL" under the LTE Preference menu. I unselected it, chose Back and then End (both under the softkey menu). I then re-dialed *#2263# to get back into the Band Selection menu except this time I selected "Automatic" and chose End in the softkey menu. Re-inserted SIM, and rebooted.
No I get signal 3-5 bars, 4G and 4G LTE where strong signal is available.
I thought LTE was only data and could not be used for calls.

Right. The data is the 3g/4g connection and the symbol next to the bars is the data speed. The bars is the strength of the gsm/phone signal.
It actually sounds like the OP was involved in a tower maintenance scenario and probably didn't matter what he did.
You can do the same settings changing from the mobile data settings menu.
You can't do the same settings from the mobile data settings menu. There you can only mess with data bands. You can turn LTE off or on on my Canadian ROM but you can't use it as the only band. And I didn't think you could even change this on ATT ROMs/radios at all. I believe he used LTE as the one and only bands for phone and data which caused his issue. I have achieved this same result by messing with those band setting found by *#2263#.
However the ability to send/receive texts but no calls does not make sense. That could have been tower issues since they both use the same phone band.

Er, what?
Is that a JB thing because I know it wasn't present on the ATT ICS ROM. Also where is the LTE setting??
The default is "fastest available". If you choose the high speed setting, it will connect to whatever is best.
I assumed JB stock because the OP said he just got the phone.

It's on the canadian version of JB in the settings/mobile network. Missing from att JB though.
You can however force LTE only through the service menu. Att and tmobile use band 4. Not sure about anyone else.
You must dial *#2263# into dialer and select LTE and choose the band your provider supports. That will force LTE only. Dial the same thing into dialer and select automatic* to go back to jumping through LTE/WCDMA/GSM.
I understand it is on the Canadian version as I am using it. The Canadian version also includes LTE. I know how this all works. I have a Rogers note. But my question was to ranger on where he pulled that screenshot from. I always had an LTE option both on ICS and JB. And it was my understanding that ATT left this feature out on all versions and their modem was locked.

You can't force LTE if its not available. Its best to leave it at auto and let the modem do Its job of connecting to the best signal.

It may have been, but soon after I *thought* I had fixed the problem, the same issue restarted. I believe it was an issue with the phone hardware itself, maybe the antenna. I don't know. I sold the phone and got an S3.
No problems with the S3 :good:
I used to have that problem until i changed the MNC to 260
Here is my story.
Last night I decided to jump from cm10.1.3. to the latest AOKP nightly. Something went wrong with the flash, probably a download corruption due to the fact that I downloaded over lte. In the install I also overwrote my recovery image with the dual boot devil kernel one. On boot I had problems and couldn't restore my backup. I assembled a flashable package CWM 6.0.4.1 IIRC. I was able to restore and was back in business.
I downloaded aokp on my pc instead of my phone, flashed that, and it was working fine for a couple hours. At some point I saw 2 bars of 3g. I was like wtf, whatever and connected to wifi. I am on an unlimited plan, so this was an inconvenience. I flashed back to cm to get some files I wanted, and went to sleep. still having 3g.
Woke up, 3g. The network must be broken, right?
I meet up with my sister, she has 4g lte full service.
I reboot, see full service, see the 4g icon, then see the 4g icon go away, service drop to 2 bars and the 3g icon come up.
I reflash my radio, 3g
I wipe /system/,/data/,/cache/, restore, 3g
reslash kernel, 3g
Why is my phone dumping lte in favor of 3g. Did I piss off verizon?
EDIT: I just installed stock rooted and still have 3g only
I just got 4g for a minute after cycling airplane mode. it switched to 3g during a speed test.
Edit, I seem to have resolved this by toggling my network mode. I find it odd that this would have an impact across backups.
Edit2 sometimes it doesnt stick on reboot. Also goes back to 3g after a call. This is very wacky.
Now 3g stayed connected in a call.
What is the code to reprovision the sim card? Some people have seen results with this. however the code for the s3 that I found wont work.
verizon is sending me a new sim. I am glad I flashed to stock because even over the phone they asked for my build number.
After setting up, did you by chance change any of the settings in PA to turn on 2g when the screen is off? I was doing this and it would change my network settings to GSM instead of LTE+Evo

nope, in fact I even restored with odin. On a dead stock unrooted rom with a locked bootloader. lte didn't work.
