[Q]Gsm safestrap? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi guys, I'm really confused. I understand the differences between gsm and cdma. What I dont get is how we can have safestrap for cdma but not gsm. Surely this is the better solution for recoveries?
Am I missing something or are we (gsm owners) missing out? I really want to try some custom roms but can't help but think I'm in the poo if something goes wrong.
Any ideas?

Its just a naming differ. To GSM razr CWM is called bootstrap.
Cheers

But what I have read is that safestrap and bootstrap are different setups.
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium

Its not just a name difference.
Safestrap works very differently than Razr Bootstrap even though both are based on Koush's CWM recovery.
Safestrap loads a "Safe" system to the /preinstall partition so that the "unsafe" stock system remains untouched by any modifications.
The reason that it is not compatible with the XT910 is because the /preinstall partition is much smaller than the XT912 and there is not room to put the safe system on it.

That explains it alot better.
So, the only option we have is bootstrap. In that case, how reliable is the boot to cwm script? I just feel a touch nervous coming from htc and samsung devices where the recovery partition was very reliable and hard to mess the phone up.

It's pretty decent I guess. I've had a ton of times where I've entered bootloop, and CWM on boot really helped. It only doesn't work when you do stupid stuff (like format /system ), but there's always fastbooting.
Just make sure you READ through the posts properly, and you should be fine.

Thanks. I feel alot better now.

A safer bootstrap for GSM/CDMA is coming soon.
I'm working on it right now. I'll try to make it available as soon as ICS is official.

Thats great. Ill hold off doing anything beyond rooting then. Stock ics looks like it'll be really nice anyway. I've been teaching myself various code basics so I'm going to try cook a rom myself. Stripped down aosp of some sort.

They are pretty much the same. Amonra has a couple cool features. For example, it can root a stock rom from recovery
Didn't know about it being able to root a stock Rom. Thank you sir

Me either lol nvr heard of it

I didn't know either until I was looking through it. It worked great and took 5 seconds. It is in the development section of recovery under mounts and stuff
Cool. Thanks for the info.
So are Rom images formatted for one or the other, or can you use them interchangeably? I'm sure we'll end up seeing CWM soon so I'm curious.
Thanks!

[ROM] Sub MIUI v.1

Overview:
This is basically a ROM I made when I was bored.
It is based off of Pepperm1nt's [ROM][GB 2.3.4]GingerBread Phone 7 v0.4
I replaced some of the apps with MIUI apps such as
MIUI launcher
MIUI Music
MIUI Browser
I am not sure this ROM will work or flash so flash at your own risk
I am not responsible for any damage to your phone. Use at your own discretion
How to install
Must be on 2.3.4 NOT 2.3.5
Install bootstrap
Reboot into bootstrap recovery
Wipe data/cache
Flash this ROM

Im sorry but ill be the first one to chime in. You're putting up a ROM you didn't test yourself?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Well judging by how he has written the description, it should flash, if all he did was replace apks from miui to this rom. However a test would help peoples feelings lol
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
This should work almost flawless. I've played with all three apps he added on Molten and they worked well. Should not be an issue. Just wondering but did you ask Pepperm1nt if it was ok to use his rom? No big deal if you did Something to play with, thanks.

It's fine to use the base. The OP needs updated to give pix of the ROM and thanks for clarifying where the base is from. Let me know if you need anything...

+1 on the screen shots. Has anyone tried to flash this yet? I find it strange the person that made the rom didn't flash it before posting.

Am I the only one who was disappointed to realize that this is not an AOSP ROM?
I mean the title is misleading. I thought that this is the first fruition of 2nd init to make AOSP roms.
That's because gbp7 is not aosp based.....

was it just me or did it not let anyone else past the 'account' page? it wouldnt take me to my home to where i could set up my recovery so i had to sbf, so nice try OP, but i recommend you take this and base it off your own rom and get to familiar with the android system so you can take this and and make it your own

This is only GBphone rom + the MIUI launcher look alike and locker + other look alikes.
Sounds a little weird. No pics of screenshots or even tested? Based off someone elses rom without even asking first. Althoug he did give proper credit and did not try to act like it was his own. I appreciate all development for this phone but have to admit this is a first for me to see The OP even states not sure if this will work lol. Does not give you that warm fuzzy feeling and anxious to flash something new.

I dont mind doing a sbf. Did plenty when I was getting to eclipse 2.02 when I had root keeper on my phone I do not mean to bash anyone it is just weird the OP says he is not sure if it will work. Also the title I thought was a little misleading thought this was a MIUI rom.
Seems odd to complain about someone cooking up a new option for a phone with so little support. Regardless of the nature of that option, or what you experienced on another phones dev thread.
Thanks Jay, though I wont be using your work its nice to see people working with the x2. And incorporating miui apps / miui lookalike apps is a neat idea for miui fans who can't flash it due to a pesky locked bootloader.
And, I know none of you fine folks intended to come off as ungrateful or complainy (its my word don't steal it ). Its easy for things to be misinterpreted, between thinking about what you want to post, posting, and someone else reading your post with none of the vocal expression you had in mind.

Dual Booting on Rezound

I want to dual boot on my rezound. However, what Im unsure about is if it is possible to do if the two roms require different kernels. For example if I ran a Gb rom which needs a gb kernel, and then tried to dual boot with a ics rom that needs a ics kernel. Is this possible?
I too am wondering this. I was gonna make a nand of a GB Rom and one of an ICS Rom and switch between them
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
I think it can be done. I am actually working on it now.
At first I was like "Uh..why would you want to do that?" but then thinking of how many times I have reinstalled BAMF (4) and tried new ROMS on top of that (4)....
That's a nice idea. I don't see it happening. But a nice idea all the same.

I am sure it can be done... Just won't be easy
Would the nand idea work since the amon recovery allows you to backup the kernel as well? Just as long as you wipe data when switching between the nands?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
The reason I wanted to do it was because I wanted to be able to toy with the sense 4 roms that are unstable, without having to wipe data install the rom then have to switch back and redo my whole setup since they aren't stable. If we had dual booting the wiping data and resetting can be avoided and I can continue to check the sense 4 roms with ease.

IMPORTANT! I'm moving development to android-dev.us, if you want to know, read over there, HOWEVER, I will respond to anything posted over here

Hey guys, I'm going to try to start to learn android rom development, and thought maybe porting a AOSP rom fromt the sensation would be a cool task to work with. Right now, I think the Sensation is the closest to our Amaze, but it's CM7 build is lacking. Either way, it will be a ton easier to port CM7 than CM9 for a complete noob, but that doesn't mean I don't need your help!
I like to keep an open mind and workflow on stuff (I collaborate musically like this) so anyone willing to help or learn something can hop right in and I would appreciate it!
Some links I'm using for learning / porting:
Code:
It took a while, but I finally tracked down a mirror for the latest and last build of CM7 for the sensation:

They are very different.... thus it has been a pain in the ass to port roms to it, but since you dont have to mess with changing the screen/resolution to match it, it makes it a little easier

Ok, yea, the internals are different. So far as I can tell the sensation has an S2 snapdragon and the Amaze has an S3. I don't know if I can even get this thing to boot, but I think it will be a great learning experience nevertheless!

Hmmmm, I'm wondering how bad this risk is? Like will editing the build prop, and keeping an existing kernel brick the phone? Because by my understanding I can ALWAYS boot into the bootloader, then recovery before it even touches the files that I'm injecting
Plus my phones S-ON, not that this means anything, because I have fastboot!

There's the soft brick my friend. Try to boot into recovery and restore. If you can't get into recovery, you will have to re-install a recovery using fastboot or adb. You can find the instructions on X's site in Amaze>Development> and find a recovery... It will be labeled "hard way" but its not really hard at all. It's easier than soft bricking your phone

Thanks man! But not needed It's just installing to the system partition and one other, but both are active only after the bootloader, so I just hold down the "volume down" button while turning on, scroll to recovery and restore my backup. I'm guessing he means soft-bricking? It's pretty darn easy to do that though. Hard brick, not so much. I once wiped /system and accidentally turned off my phone. Still managed to restore it.
Anyway, welcome to the Razr community. Look around, get your bearings, and start flashing random stuff. My advice? Not everything can be found on xda. So try looking around in other forums and stuff.
