I agree, for now there's little benefit of having s-off. For me, I prefer not to have my device listed in htc's database as being unlocked.
More importantly however, once there are other updates such as radios, and other low level updates, the process to update will become more convoluted I think. You'll have to run relock (I think), then ruu, then unlock again, then restore.
With S-off, you simply flash the new radio or other update and it's a done deal.
Wouldn't s-off be necessary for switching between carriers? Since LTE wouldn't be available until 2013 for some markets why not save a few dollars.

Are you sending your phone to HTC for warranty issues because "most" device "fixing" happens at the Sprint store level OR through Asurion and they don't hold root/HTC Dev unlock against you.
Saving your HTC warranty is practically a moot point..... but as always, to each, his own. I'm sure you won't see anyone knocking you for going your own road.
I don't waste money on insurance. Once I've had the phone a couple weeks and know it doesn't have any defects i don't care but in the first few weeks i do.
I didn't realize sprint didn't care about unlocking though. I am surprised people are always so concerned with unrooting when bringing their phones in for issues in that case.

I'm not talking about insurance, Sprint can't (shouldn't) turn you away for warranty issues of any kind (*within the warranty period). If you remove TEP, $8 and soon to be $11, which includes the ERP (Equipment Replacement Program) and the ESRP (Equipment Service & Replacement Program) you can still pay in store for a repair and avoid having to go through, what I'm sure would be, a painful warranty claim with HTC. I actually don't even think HTC would not honor their warranty if you use the Unlock and need a "hardware" warranty claim having absolutely nothing to do with rooting the device. Who knows though.... I do know, if you have no insurance or the ESRP at minimum, you'll be looking at a charge or the HTC direct route. I would recommend at least the $4 a month ESRP as we know how speakers and screens can be (at least in the past) the weakest links and need replacement.
As for the rooted devices being ok (this is very new and the worry before was pretty real), you can read an article and see the internal memo here http://www.androrev.com/2012/04/17/...-provide-customer-support-for-rooted-devices/. With that said, I'll never voluntarily take my rooted device in, they don't need know that info!
I never s on my device I just unroot lol o and take my sdcard out just in case but you have to be brave to not take your sd card out if you have personal things on there.

I doubt anything is ever going to come with an unlocked bootloader. People could mess up their phones and say it happened during an OTA. They won't be able to tell if it was really during an OTA or they did it themselves since the person would have S-OFF either way. They would either have to cancel their warranty or not have phones with unlocked bootloaders.
I understand the wait, but at least some word from Rev; 'hey guys still working on the 1.50 hboot unlock...' .
Here is what pisses me off royally. See, HTC is requiring users to sign a electronic document that bypasses the Magnuson Moss Act; requires manufactures to prove that the alteration is what caused the warranty claim. Ie, car owner comes to the dealership because engine blew. Dealership notices that owner put on aftermarket exhaust, dealership will not warranty the engine. HTC is technically bypassing all that stating that rooting your phone, you are opting out of any factory or extended warranty. Ie, phone no turny on, HTC > You = po3ned . Sure they'll take a look at it, only to tell you that it is now going to cost you $xxx.xx to fix it.
Its odd that they say unlock the phone but all they do is unlock the mmc protection to the file system and still void parts of the warranty.
The boot partition where the kernel lives is still protected and unflashable without using the work around.
Seems to me they are benefiting from this "unlock" more than anyone.

You make a very good point, but I have one word for you; partnership. If you go back and read HTC and Sprint's Terms and Agreements it states that by agreeing to the T&A you are allowing the sharing of information. If Sprint says that by agreeing to the unlock you void the 'manufacture's' warranty, then you are doing just that by agreeing to the unlock.
But again, I applaud you for thinking outside the box. For once some people are beginning to see behind the facade.

So its time for me to jump ship and move to a new carrier (Moved away and sprints service here is even worse then were I was) I'm not getting calls for job call backs which is hurting me a lot. So I will be switching to T-Mobile or Verizon. Never will go back to AT&T.
I love this phone though. I was a Evo 4G owner before EVO 3D. What phone would be best suited for me that is currently out, or coming out in the future for either carrier? Must be VERY powerful (I like saying I have one of the most powerful smartphones in available) And it needs to have a huge XDA base. I'm a flashaholic... (Pretty much rules out samsung...
You picked the 2 best carriers...
Verizon - Galaxy Nexus
There should be a lot of ROM's, cyanogenmod support should be quick, and the bootloader will be unlockable right after you get it. This is probably the choice that I would go with since the galaxy nexus is a google phone, the XDA base will be the largest, etc. etc. The Galaxy Nexus will be google's and verizon's flagship phone.
T-Mobile - One of the Sensation phones
I don't know which one has the largest XDA base, but I think all sensation phones are the same software wise (so it might just be one section). The sensation is also the flagship tmobile phone. I think the sensation has a great developer base since there is already ICS source ROM available.
Definitely the Sensation or Amaze 4G. Just one glance to he Sensation forums should give you an idea how big it is. It's at least twice as big than here.

True, if he wants to get terminated he actually should use that PRL and stream videos/download movies/etc.
Roaming heats up my phone and drains battery but maybe the same effect isn't present on the PRL.
I will be paying the early termination fee to sprint.
If you go with Verizon, the HTC Rezound is the most comparable to the E3D, with a faster processor and a better screen (but minus the 3D camera, of course).

Yeah, go ahead and carefully look at the terms if service allows this. All carriers used to do it. Tmobile doesn't anymore for sure. I'm guessing sprint will be the same, that if you move into an area that has bad service that clause in the contract is null. It is worth a look, because if you signed the version of the contract that allows cancellation after moving to a bad service area you have the right to not pay etf.

You would be absoutly correct, Google and Larry Page could care less about Motorola or a cell phone. What they do care about is the 6000 (or is it 16,000?) patents that Motorola owns! Right now, Apple is sueing everyone for infringements, thats getting read to change real fast!!!
I dont know if you guys know this, Motorola was around L-O-N-G before Sammy, HTC, Apple, Noika, all of them. They held all these patents but never really enforced them for whatever reason. If you remember, Apple went after Motorola with its Lawyer Goons with this Paten crap. I guess Motorola did not have the balls to fight, but Larry Page has bigger Goons! F**k, motorola has patent on the old bag phone of the late 80's! So if they every come back........
Correct - this is all about now owning patents.
Means little or nothing about current phones.

I hope I'm wrong but I really doubt this will affect prior devices like the Photon, Atrix, etc.
I can imagine future devices having prompt updates, perhaps vanilla android, but seems unlikely they'd suddenly decide to move the ICS Q4 update to sooner out of the bottom of their hearts.

Expecting ICS sooner is unrealistic. Expecting unlocked bootloaders for existing phones so we can do it ourselves is another matter entirely.
As far as carrier approval goes, remember that there's a fundamental difference culturally between Motorola and Google. Motorola wouldn't even contemplate releasing an unlocker unless the carriers demanded and paid for it. Google will have its lawyers read the sales & maintenance contract it has with the carriers, and do it anyway as long as there's no clause in that contract explicitly prohibiting them from doing it.
In practical terms, that probably means Sprint and T-Mobile will have official unlockers within weeks, and AT&T & Verizon will never get them. However, I'll bet there will be some VERY interesting tidbits of info in the Sprint unlockers that might prove useful to someone at XDA trying to write one for a Verizon phone... ;-)

tnx for the info... im going to look into it i still have 6 months before my contract with sprint will end.so i still have a lot of time to figure this out
I heard another strong rumor from another strong source that Sprint is giving consideration to cancelling ICS for 3D and offer an early end to contract as good-gesture solution. I think we can see where this is going, right? Early end of contract = full discount price on the next phone.
I don't want one of those LTE phones until the stupid service is available here in Oregon. Right now, I have tons of WiMax and if switch to LTE, I lose 4G!
Why are we putting up with this crap?!
source?
but i think its crap, desire hd etc got 4.0 too...so fare...
This can't be !!
Why would they do that when the Virgin Mobile version has ICS? It wouldn't bother me though since we have 3.6 and 4.0 (minus 4g) available here now but it sucks because my contract is up in July so I would not reap any of said benefits.
Would like to see a credible source on this rumor.

Rumors. People are too gullible these days.
To pick the other side of this, most people on this forum probably have or will get ics one way or another. So if sprint would give us an early out i would welcome that. You know, when you think about it, sprint has all but kicked us 3d owners out the door anyhow. Try and get a refurb replacement. It's pretty tough right now. I can see how it would save them a bunch of hassles by not doing the update. I love my 3d even more after putting myn's ics on it. If i had an early upgrade i would probably follow him to ss3 land.
I was going to wait for the official update to be released, but it just got tiresome. I like running stock-rooted ROMs, and who knows when Sprint will get their head out of their ass to get this done. I bought my EVO 4G LTE, and it's made me happy now.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if it ends up that we (Sprint 3d users) never see an official ICS but I can guarantee that there will be no "mass" early contract out to make up for that.... Doing so would open the door to a mass exodus from Sprint with no etf. This WILL NOT HAPPEN!

HTC has announced the 3d will get ICS but that means the 3d in general, the Sprint variant of the 3d has never been officially confirmed by anyone, neither HTC or Sprint. The update has to be officially requested to HTC by a carrier on a branded devices. It is entirely possible that Sprint may not do so. The only sure thing is that unbranded GSM 3ds will get ICS. Just sayin.....
I have already all but decided that this will be my last HTC device, if it does not receive the official update, it will also be my last Sprint device.

If this happens nobody will have much of a choice.

I got my replacement in 3 days. Best buy ftw. I wouldnt mind being able to upgrade. I would probably wait tho to see what they do with pittsburgh before getting an lte device. Not trying to not have 4g for the next two years.
I highly doubt this, but I do know that Sprint wants to rid themselves of the 3D

I know it's harder to buy one new on Sprint... Why would they want to get rid of existing 3D users?

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if it ends up that we (Sprint 3d users) never see an official ICS but I can guarantee that there will be no "mass" early contract out to make up for that.... Doing so would open the door to a mass exodus from Sprint with no etf. This WILL NOT HAPPEN!
HTC has announced the 3d will get ICS but that means the 3d in general, the Sprint variant of the 3d has never been officially confirmed by anyone, neither HTC or Sprint. I'm wondering if anyone has been denied a return. Does sprint check the bootloader for *Tampered* or *Re-locked*?
I really want to start flashing roms but there is the possibility that I won't keep the phone.
Just relock your bootloader and run ruu. Then it will be acceptable. At least that's what I had to do after I showed up at the store all rooted and everything.

Well my power button was in the fritz the first day. Unfortunately the Regional HTC was at my local Sprint. Guess what he did? That's right. Booted into the bootloader. Why. I have no frikken clue. All the reps were amazed by what I did to the Dr ice so soon. Even another local sprint about 5 miles away found out (a friend of mine that works there told me) I was pretty pissed that I went in there to exchange it out and he booted Into that. O asked him for what reason, but he seriously had no clue what the f**k he was talking about. Honest to god. I'm mean, I'm sure he was just a sales Rep for HTC. But damn. When he seen that Tampered sign and when he also booted into TWRP, he was like "jeez, android in gone. Why did you do that?" LOL. So, o talked to one of my girl friends from Sprint, she's gonna hook me up. But I wad so shocked that he did that, all over me ha ing an issue with my power button. That was the first for me. Thank is god tha issue I had was due to a couple of apps .or allowing my phone to sleep correctly. Ahh well

I exchanged mine yesterday after with it relocked and still rooted with no issues.
Well to be fair a bad kernel could affect the power button. Maybe he thought you were flashing kernel ports or something
Thanks for the response guys!! I'm gonna unlock now!

this phone just came out why did you return it already?
It's hard to check if the bootloader was unlocked when you have a broken screen. (wink wink)

Do not go to a corp store go to a retail store that does repairs they need to order one which is two days and they take the old one. No way there are refubs yet.

Well that is good to know. I'm waiting for mine to charge so I can activate, but hopefully everything checks out. I'm glad to know that relocking and going back to stock seems to take care of CS issues.

It is normal but some stores are aholes and check for root and unlocked bootloggers and act like they are the owners of sprint. Hard to find a good crop store.
