You would be absoutly correct, Google and Larry Page could care less about Motorola or a cell phone. What they do care about is the 6000 (or is it 16,000?) patents that Motorola owns! Right now, Apple is sueing everyone for infringements, thats getting read to change real fast!!!
I dont know if you guys know this, Motorola was around L-O-N-G before Sammy, HTC, Apple, Noika, all of them. They held all these patents but never really enforced them for whatever reason. If you remember, Apple went after Motorola with its Lawyer Goons with this Paten crap. I guess Motorola did not have the balls to fight, but Larry Page has bigger Goons! F**k, motorola has patent on the old bag phone of the late 80's! So if they every come back........
Correct - this is all about now owning patents.
Means little or nothing about current phones.

Lol you can put the photon on pretty much any carrier now. Atm I have my photon on page plus (verizon). I'm pretty sure boost is on the sprint network so 3g or 4g might work (as long as your boot loader is locked). To get on another cdma carrier all you got to do for the most part is flash alother prl.

I guess that could be real possible. If I remember right they use Sprint's towers.
My MoPho's in the kitchen sink!!
I hope I'm wrong but I really doubt this will affect prior devices like the Photon, Atrix, etc.
I can imagine future devices having prompt updates, perhaps vanilla android, but seems unlikely they'd suddenly decide to move the ICS Q4 update to sooner out of the bottom of their hearts.
Guys, here is the most informative article I have read on the subject from AndroidPolice. This guy is a Law Student in California and explains the good and the bad of the marriage. Enjoy!

Expecting ICS sooner is unrealistic. Expecting unlocked bootloaders for existing phones so we can do it ourselves is another matter entirely.
As far as carrier approval goes, remember that there's a fundamental difference culturally between Motorola and Google. Motorola wouldn't even contemplate releasing an unlocker unless the carriers demanded and paid for it. Google will have its lawyers read the sales & maintenance contract it has with the carriers, and do it anyway as long as there's no clause in that contract explicitly prohibiting them from doing it.
In practical terms, that probably means Sprint and T-Mobile will have official unlockers within weeks, and AT&T & Verizon will never get them. However, I'll bet there will be some VERY interesting tidbits of info in the Sprint unlockers that might prove useful to someone at XDA trying to write one for a Verizon phone... ;-)

So, looking to upgrade and kick Sprint to the curb after 12 years with Nextel, and Ting is looking like a really fine service as far as four line family plans go. I'm kicking around my HTC Hero, (CM7, gonna try ICS Beta for it's last huzzah.) and was looking for a more powerful Android. Was thinking about getting a feature phone or a mifi, and complementing it with a Galaxy Player. But the Photon looks really, really nice all of a sudden, with 4G and GSM compatibility. Toss in the best specs on a month-to-month phone that I've seen, I'm seriously considering dropping $550 on this thing. Please talk me out of it?
I don't know if you are in the states, but US gsm towers are blocked.
Edit: The photon is featured in their front page, and it gives incorrect/conflicting information about the phone.

^ Yeah, I know that. Kinda hoping that might be unblocked by the time I'm interested in it, if I want to jump to T-Mobile in the future. I know it's a long shot, but it would be nice to have.

Just get Ting are you in Canada?
Stateside. And with the Photon kinda being oversold on the Ting website, and not that great a bump from the Conquer, dual core nonwithstanding, I'm still a little confuzled on what I want.
How future-proof would you say this thing is, regarding still being competitive in the next couple years? Tend to run them until they dead or unserviceable, and if blow a massive chunk of my tax return, might as well make it last a while.
Experience with Ting thus far...
Hi all,
I recently changed carriers from AT&T (using Motorola Atrix 4G) to Ting (Motorola Photon 4G) and I have recently unlocked the bootloader (yes, I lost 4G connectivity), rooted, and installed the latest version of Rocko ROM with Alien Theme.
Everything has worked out so far and I am having a good experience with the device and with Ting Mobile, from their no wait phone service policy, to their dashboard web interface. I can't really speak to the relative degree of future proofing the Photon may have compared to other phones, I am just happy that I could get away from paying so much for a similar tier of service at AT&T and not necessarily have to compromise on a phone, though not being able to use GSM towers with a prepaid SIM card is a bummer, but otherwise, so far so good. Take care all.

No phone is future proof the way things are flowing manufacturers are cracking phones out of their ass every 3 months or so. You have to look at the development threads that will tell you how active the phone is on the developers on xda are and that should give you an insight on how worth it is.

I disagree. Just because it's a mobile virtual network operator doesn't mean the the files are the same. On the contrary, I'd bet anyone using one of these device could confirm their notification bar and lock screen show Ting as the carrier, not sprint, which means at a minimum the framework-res/eri.xml has been edited, meaning it's not the same file despite being on "technically" the same network.
I'd like to see a system dump of one of these. I think there are magic elves locked inside

How you guys dealing with edge on tmo. HotSpot/Wifi Spots. I have an N1 running Ice Cream Sandwich which works as a HS or so they say. I have awhile left on contract with tmo but would eventually want att lte, I think. Not sure tmo even when they roll out lte will have the Note work on their lte. But, gues i can switch to att at that time. All these phones are looking small after playing with the Note at stores. Maybe the SGSIII will compete at 4.8 and quad/ICS. I want speed and good signal strength in Dayton Oh. Something I don't get on N1 in Dayton, at least at home and work. Just got to play with calendar more. Seems not as user friendly as ICS/GB. Maybe just practice. Screen doesn't seem responsive to touch esp in week view. Sorry for getting off topic and jumping in. But, very much interested in phone.

I agree, for now there's little benefit of having s-off. For me, I prefer not to have my device listed in htc's database as being unlocked.
More importantly however, once there are other updates such as radios, and other low level updates, the process to update will become more convoluted I think. You'll have to run relock (I think), then ruu, then unlock again, then restore.
With S-off, you simply flash the new radio or other update and it's a done deal.
Wouldn't s-off be necessary for switching between carriers? Since LTE wouldn't be available until 2013 for some markets why not save a few dollars.

Are you sending your phone to HTC for warranty issues because "most" device "fixing" happens at the Sprint store level OR through Asurion and they don't hold root/HTC Dev unlock against you.
Saving your HTC warranty is practically a moot point..... but as always, to each, his own. I'm sure you won't see anyone knocking you for going your own road.
I don't waste money on insurance. Once I've had the phone a couple weeks and know it doesn't have any defects i don't care but in the first few weeks i do.
I didn't realize sprint didn't care about unlocking though. I am surprised people are always so concerned with unrooting when bringing their phones in for issues in that case.

I'm not talking about insurance, Sprint can't (shouldn't) turn you away for warranty issues of any kind (*within the warranty period). If you remove TEP, $8 and soon to be $11, which includes the ERP (Equipment Replacement Program) and the ESRP (Equipment Service & Replacement Program) you can still pay in store for a repair and avoid having to go through, what I'm sure would be, a painful warranty claim with HTC. I actually don't even think HTC would not honor their warranty if you use the Unlock and need a "hardware" warranty claim having absolutely nothing to do with rooting the device. Who knows though.... I do know, if you have no insurance or the ESRP at minimum, you'll be looking at a charge or the HTC direct route. I would recommend at least the $4 a month ESRP as we know how speakers and screens can be (at least in the past) the weakest links and need replacement.
As for the rooted devices being ok (this is very new and the worry before was pretty real), you can read an article and see the internal memo here http://www.androrev.com/2012/04/17/...-provide-customer-support-for-rooted-devices/. With that said, I'll never voluntarily take my rooted device in, they don't need know that info!
I never s on my device I just unroot lol o and take my sdcard out just in case but you have to be brave to not take your sd card out if you have personal things on there.

Both AT&T and Verizon appear to be equal in almost every aspect in my area( Coverage, cost of the plan I need, subsidized phone cost), so that leaves the 1 question that really matters:
Which is easier both to root, and even more importantly, unroot to the point I can still use my warranty?

Well, in an area where my options are 'not LTE with Verizon' and 'Not LTE, but at least HSPA+ with AT&T' AND Verizon proceeds to lock the bootloader... I'm dropping Verizon after 6 years!
Think about it Verizon has a fast roll out of lte
Also after you've been a customer for a while you get special benefits
I know on sprint when I can't pay the bill on time I can just call and ask for a extension of about a week or so
This way my cell still has network access
As much as I like to pay my bills on time some times I can't and this helps

At&t has stretched my payment date by over two weeks before...as long as I make the promised payment they will do it every month and won't even charge me a late fee...

The thing is you were on the carrier for a while
I heard that they don't do this to new customers

And even if they didn't, I plan to pay 6-10 months at once with student loans.
I wouldn't even consider Verizon with this whole bootloader issue. I say AT&T.

I've concluded the same as well, but do I get a 2 yr contract, or buy the device outright and do $45/mo on straight talk?
Can someone who has the S3 with AT&T confirm the bootloader is unlocked. I am switching from Verizon and just want to make sure.

I believe you and thanks. I am talking with a AT&T sales rep who said he knows what a bootloader is, but he is telling me it's locked. I don't have the S3 in my hands yet, but is there a way to check?

He can say the sky is purple it does not matter. The AT&T Galaxy S3 has an UNLOCKED bootloader. People already told you. If you don't believe them then stop asking.
Is there anyone get way to unlock bootloader of mopho 2.3.5 .. or any otherway to use any ics or jb rom ... plz tell

My man! This is discussed countless times here already . You should search before posting. You can only unlock your bootloader if your device was on 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 shipped. If you have applied 2.3.5 update OTA, you cannot unlock your bootloader. There is no other way to install ICS or JB ROM without unlocking the bootloader.
And you've posted your QUESTION in DEVELOPMENT thread
Plz... devs... do something .. plz unlock bootloader.... m frustrated vid locked one...........

It's not up to the devs. The OTA 2.3.5 encrypted the bootloader with a signed private key that only Motorola has access too.
If you want your bootloader unlocked, complain to Motorola. Start following the Support My Moto campaign, and help us out on that front.

Guys, unfortunately if you want to flash custom roms, ur either going to have to move on to another platform, or try to find a MoPho with 2.3.4. Just accept it, this phone will be forgotten soon. Honestly, as much as I appreciate all the devs hard work, the custom roms on this phone are all lacking something, but that's not all their fault. Motorola screwed us all by cutting us out of the JB update. I think the MoPho works good out of the box. Rooting it alone is enough to make it a great phone.
I have not even been able to root my mopho since the update. Since my job will pay off the rest of my contract I am looking at a galaxy s3 or note2 through at&t. Any opinions out there? I have use Moto phones since Android came out, but this is a lame situation they put us in.

Go with the note 2. It's no doubt the best phone I've ever had.

Or if u don't want to get locked into another contract, get a Galaxy Nexus and go prepaid. I just picked one up a Sprint version on eBay in perfect condition for $200. I would love to have the SIII, but this Gnex is a great phone too. I loved my MoPho, but this phone puts it to shame. Easiest root and unlock I've ever seen on a phone, and the roms are amazing. Just saw LTE speeds for the first time the other day. Incredibly fast, and I got perfect signal where I never had one before. I highly recommend the Gnex.

What prepaid service are you on with your sprint gnex?
Sorry, I didn't explain well. I was just recommending prepaid. I'm not on prepaid yet, stuck with Sprint contract for another 8 months, but as soon as my contract expires I'll sell my Gnex and either buy another one hspa version, or an SIII. I'll proly go with Straight Talk or Solavei prepaid.
