[Q] Some General Questions - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to ask some general questions on how you like the HTC evo 4G LTE (That is a mouthful..) anyways hope you can help.
1. What is the general battery life? The stats say 7.5 hours of talking, but I don't know how accurate that is...
2. I have read all the positive reviews, but I am more interested in the negative. So where does it get a negative mark in?
Any other info you would like to share about your experience would be helpful!
Thanks.

Battery lasts 12 hours easy with moderate use.. ymmv depending on how much screen on time you have but the battery is better by far than all previous EVO phones.
The only negative I can really think of personally is that the multitasking behaves funny sometimes. I notice re-accessing an app from the multitasking screen sometimes restarts it which it shouldn't do but I'm sure they can fix that with an update.
Overall I absolutely love this phone. I have owned android phones since the launch day of the T-Mobile G1 and this is by far the best phone experience I have ever had.

1. With moderate use, you should easily get through an entire day. I've taken my phone off the charger around 7:30 am two days in a row now, and it doesn't get juiced again until midnight. First night I had 20%+ left, last night I had 8% left after 14-15 hours of use. Yesterday, usage included: calls, texts, corporate email sync set to push, internet browsing, a few photos, listening to a few music tracks, a LOT of downloaded album art (the HTC Music app took care of a lot of missing art for me), Google Maps, and some light SNESoid and Draw Something.
2. So far my only complaint is the clock/weather widget places me in a different city about an hour west of me about 1/3 of the time I check it. A bit odd.

HORRIBLE Battery Life due to Display!!!!
Is this because of the qHD display or the 3D?
My display always ends up using +80% of my battery...
I've tried keeping the display at about 25% brightness and auto... both Didnt seem to help...
Any solutions or sugestions?
Thanks in Advance
same as it was for me on my hd2 and my week with the 4g.
just the nature of the beast with a big screen
I was the proud owner of the 4g for one year and granted the display took up a lot of battery it was never more than 40% for me
Sent from my rootless 3VO... Lets get that working
I think it's a bit of a false positive. I've noticed that when I"m in weak signal areas, my display percentage is WAY higher (60-80%) than it normally is. Even when my display is hardly ever on (as indicated by the battery graph). I have a feeling that multiple things (including cell standby/data syncing) are erroneously rolled up into the "display" category.
Dave
The reason you see high numbers is because your display is the only thing that will make a dent into the battery. Everything else isn't consuming as much so that is why you see such a high percentage. My sister has a shift, my dad has a 3D, I have a 3D and an EVO. They all share the same display percentages. People need to stop worrying.
The other apps are not consuming as much power so the display is reading high. I also noticed this with any phone that has gingerbread sense. The shift and EVO started showing results like this once they got the gingersense update.

Is there any way to comfirm this? (app from market?)
I don't know if this will apply to the 3D since it is in reference to the OG Evo, but I find that when I'm on a Sense based ROM it is ALWAYS display that takes up the most, and when I'm on AOSP it's ALWAYS cell standby.

No clue whether it applies either, however that would fit in with Dodgeboy's anecdote about weak signal increasing his display %.
My battery life has been outstanding with heavy usage. Normally around 24 hours all mobile data and no WiFi.

I can say I get 24hrs with heavy usage also, but I am using WiFi. Out of the 24, the phone is active for 6-7 hours watching netflix, browsing the internet, browsing xda, playing fruit ninja and watching videos plus YouTube.
Just cause you don't get that doesn't mean others don't.
Did yall do anything special when u got your phone? I can usually get about 12 with moderate usage. I would love to be able to play games all day with good battery

I get less than 6 hours. I love this phone but the battery life is pissing me off. Lol. Not that I'm not used to it with the original EVO.

LOL, there is no way anyone is getting 24 hours out of this battery or their definition of "Heavy Usage" is FAR different from say... HEAVY USAGE.
I'm in sales. I top out around 8K minutes a month making and taking phone calls, in/out pitching , closing etc..
Phone is usually ON - talking, dialing, sending/receiving email, syncing, updating.
I'm lucky to get 4 hours.
lmao.. 24 hours heavy usage.. newbs.

If you charged your battery all the way before using it for the first time then unplug it and plug it back in you will get outstanding battery life and do it every time you charge your phone plus don't drain your battery completely you will shorten life of the battery...quit *****ing and condition your and give automateit a go from the market and turn off automatic brightness

the bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushing, if you know what I mean.
I'm on the side that 24hrs of heavy usage being fairly absurd. I'm not outright denying it's possible, but I can't see it.
My phone used 70% over 12hrs. That only entailed receiving push mail for at most 50 messages. I turned on the screen occasionally, but didn't really use the phone. I was connected to wifi most of that time, and had a good cell signal. Estimates say I could get a few more hours out of the phone. That still puts it at around 15-18 hours of almost no use. I could see maybe hitting 24hrs if I didn't touch it the entire time.
Great
I am very pleased with battery life. I'm getting 8 hours plus without any problems.
I have never check to see how long it actually last. I've never just let it run over night. But I have run it about 20 hours on days since I got it and by the time I'm plugging it in at night it still has 30%+ left on it's charge. I run all sorts of stuff during the day, play games, check XDA, use the internet, 4G, navigator, etc., plus spend 3-4 hours on actually talking for work. So, I could believe the 24 hours, especially after running for 20+ hours on days. I always let it charge completely overnight though.
Fully charged on AC overnight. Unplugged at 7:30am. its not even 10 yet and the phone is below 50% charge. i have made two short phone calls and sent a few texts. that's it.
This is pathetic. Even if it is radio related, that's still not acceptable.
Hoping to see the Seidio fat battery get released soon. At least the phone will last a day then
Any thoughts on the OTA perhaps improving battery life? I hesitate to apply it while waiting for root, but from what I am reading, we might be at the mercy of HTC in that regard anyway...
Edit: 30 minutes later, down to 15% charge. amazing.

So how bad _is_ the battery problem

I have been dying to get this phone for weeks, but every review I see posted has bad news about the battery. I'd really love to hear some real world numbers to see if this phone could work for me. I really need to get through 'til late evening, and I need to be able to make 1.5-2 hrs of voice calls per day. Am I dreaming?
What is your experience?
Thanks for responding - I really appreciate your input!
My first real day with my Amaze
Woke up at 6 am EST. Went to the in-laws and usewd my phone to check traffic to ATL Hartsfield. Checked a few more times while texting and checking a few notifications. Get on plane. Airplane mode. Play some angry birds and teeter. try to figure out what all these widget things are all about since I am new to Android. Get to Chicago. Walk about 4 miles through the city snapin pics (see amazing photos thread) Stopped and ate at a resturant. More facebook, text email. Back to where we are staying and it just turned yellow. Not too bad if you ask me considering it was only yellow and I have juice defender for 25% or lower. I could have gone couple hours longer normal use.

I noticed in your other thread that you were getting 19 hours - what is your usage pattern like? Also, why is wifi calling an issue - I thought that this had it. Not a deal breaker, but I'd love it for calling home when I'm overseas.
Simply put, from 100 - 0% battery...I haven't hit 7 hours yet (4.5-6.8 hours). That's on moderate-heavy use.
I've now gone through three cycles and will begin to use the device "normally" this coming week. Let's just say I'll be hanging onto my blackberry bold 9780 for travels or times when I know i wont be near a charger for a day. This is one of those - plug in at the office - kind of phones. haha.
Turning off 4g would help, as well as GPS.
I expect once I go back to my Android ways (I've been spoiled by BlackBerry battery life) I can push past 12 hours on this phone.

Hour and a half plane ride.... Got back close to 4 probably.
no major testing but i charged both of my devices to 100% Evo and Amaze. took them off the charger at 1am didn't touch them until 7 am and the Evo went down to 75% and the Amaze 73%. the Evo is rooted ad the Amaze is of course stock.
I have 3 gmail accounts on automatic sync as well as an exchange account set to push delivery. also a news and Facebook widget set to sync every hour.
Yesterday I watched my battery life carefully. I went 8+40 before the first battery warning at 29%. It went an hour and 10 minutes more to yellow at 19%. Then finally turned red after a total of 13+10. I would characterize my usage as light. I listened to an .mp3 while getting ready, did a little messaging. got maybe 20 emails during the day. Had a few short phone calls. Responded to an email from work. Downloaded and installed an app from thre Market. Watched a few short Youtube videos, etc. I have four email accounts, three of which push to the phone. Since I might need to respond to an emergency from the office, I can't see normally letting my phone go below 30%, so that means I have about 8 and a half hours of light use. I was really hoping for more.
As soon as we get root we will have wifi calling. That's if we don't get an OTA with that sooner.
Mine gets horrible battery life when I use it. But when it is on standby its almost crazy how little it actually seems to use.

Lol. That's about right.
For those of you having terrible battery life I suggest going to the market and downloading juice defender and juice plotter. I took my phone off the charger today around 6:15 am and it’s now 1:05am and I still have 26% battery remaining. That is with moderate use and a short 15 minute charge through a computer usb. I took about 8 calls averaging 5 minutes a call, one was 7, watched two YouTube videos, sent 11 text messages, played a game for about 5 minutes wasting time, checked a couple of my posts on xda 3 or 4 times, as well as using the weather app frequently (I’m in Florida and we've been getting hammered with rain!) O... and most of the things that required connectivity my phone was connected to Wi-Fi. With the correct profiles and settings enabled it should increase battery life considerably, and if you have root, even more so!! Been using it with my old g2 and myt4g, and now Amaze!!

Is the Amaze batter life THAT bad?

Hey All,
I was just wondering if they could post some of their impressions of the Amaze's battery life. According to the engadget's review it's horrid. 5hrs of use? that can't even last half a day. Mind you, the Amaze has a bigger battery than the sensation
(google Engadget Amaze)
I currently have the Sensation and the battery life was "bearable". It was at the limit of what's acceptable for battery life. After I undervolted the cores (-62.5mV), i'm having amazing battery life (10-12 hours of usage with data/email/text/light surfing/calls). If I upgrade to the Anker battery, it's going to be sweet.
I was originally going to upgrade to the Amaze but the battery life scares me. Can anyone so a comparison between the GS2 or post some real-life usage stats of the battery? If it's really that bad, i might just have to get the other option which is the GS2.
I think its normal

I agree. I've had several Androids, and this one seems about average. I can burn through a full charge in 5-6 hours of heavy use, or go all day with the phone mostly on standby. Like any other Android, I charge whenever I have the opportunity. I would love to have the battery life of my BB9780.
that sounds better... engadget made it sound really really bad. I was wondering what was making the phone consume so much power. It's essentially almost the same hardware as the sensation except for a few new upgrades.
does anyone have their battery graph to share?
Usually, I take anything reported by Engadget as not reliable ...
It is very clear that if it is not an Apple product, they will find a way to criticize...

It was true with old blackberries, but if you take Torch and similar to Android or iPhone, you will notice that multitasking is killing a battery phone, as well as its capacitive screen.
Old blaberries were bearing strong battery life, as it was doing nothing in background (and in foreground ... sorry, joking).
BUT, I'm using a Desire (first gen) and waiting to upgrade to Telus Amaze. What I can say, is the ROM, by what it integrates as processes and apps running, is the culprit. I tried Cyanogenmod, then LeeDroid, and depending on the version, one was better than another... for now, last LeeDroid version is GREAT!!!

Gizmodo is far worse than Engadget about this, but Engadget has gotten noticeably skewed lately.
It seems normal to me--same run time as my Vibrant on CM7/Vibrant 4g on custom Froyo/ N1 on Sense. 5 hours? They were hitting it harder than the fist of an angry god. I play music 9 hours straight, games, sms, calls. 9 HOURS.
I personally find it exceptional, especially right out of the box.
I use 25% screen brightness and black background.
2G only.
The only syncs I have are FB, Gmail and Exchange. I've disabled the unnecessary stuff like weather stocks and FB contact integration as well as Picasa sync and I can easily get a full day out of it and come home with 60% battery life left.
I'm not a heavy user but I'm very happy with the battery life. I'm excited to get in and start ditching bloat.
Since you have sensation u can use sensation,s battery for amaze. I bought an anker battery of sensation, it works perfect on my amaze

I have a sensation and a Amaze, the amaze is a much more impressive device and has the best battery life I've seen since I started using the HD2 back in the day. Normal use last me almost a full twenty four hours, with sync mail every two hours/weather. And since it was released about four weeks ago, tmo has already released three updates and told me another is coming very shortly to add the wi fi calling feature, and also stated that HTC will be giving us a new update to take us to ICS.
Compared to the sensation, the amaze is a real peice of hardware, the sensation just feels cheap to me and it's battery is very poor. I'm selling my sensation and keeping the amaze. You'll like it if you get one. Peace. V
Thanks for all the replies! If I can get someone to buy my sensation, i'll be definitely buying the Amaze. I live in canada so unfortunately i can't check it out in person but it sounds like a great piece of hardware.
The only thing i might miss is not having the the SAMOLED on the GS2. Resolution vs. Colour saturation.

How is it that you are getting a full day on a charge? I have the brightness turned down, all Htc widgets off, and simple use and barely get 10 hours until its down to 20%. It is an improvement over the Sensation but imo, not in the battery department.
Set your network mode to GSM only. There is little to no use to high speed data if it's just idle receiving emails.
I use the Curvefish widget 2g/3g on/off which brings me to that part of the wireless networks menu for easy change so if time is a factor and I want to surf, I'll turn it on.
If that doesn't do it for you, dupliacte some of the settings and see if there is a change.
I did no battery "training" with mine either.

[Q] Best JB ROM for longest battery life?

Hello
I'm sorry if this has been already asked before but I couldn't find it anywhere. What would you guys recommend as the best Jelly Bean ROM that will give me the longest battery life? I love the JB ROM that I'm using right now, but unfortunately it has got a horrible battery life. There are times where I will go through 3 full batteries in one day. I keep my screen brightness on auto and I don't really play games on my phone but I am a heavy user. I really value applications that use background data such as Gmail and Facebook and others so turning auto syncing is out of the question for me. I also use bluetooth a lot and stream pandora to my car radio for at least 1.5 hours a day. I'm looking for a ROM that can definitely get me through the day on one battery. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I don't think any rom will ever get the battery life you are asking for. With that kind of use, an extended battery is a must. Our phones (Hardware wise) will not do it.

That's not going to happen... Why wouldn't you plug it in when you're using it in the car?
Its not going to happen. You have to take people battery screenshots with a grain of salt. They have WiFi on and basically don't touch their phone. They have nothing syncing. I use neo infected ROM and while at work I mostly only use it to do fb texting and surf xda. I can have 40% battery left after about 12. During that time the usage is 2 10 min breaks and 40 min lunch. With maybe checking a few times an hr to see if the wife has texted me. So that's not real good life as that's light usage.
Like I have told people you have to choose what's more important battery life or using your phone like its was intended to be used.
This is just like a truck forum when people posts how can I get better gas mileage out of my v8. There's no such thing. I tell them want great gas mileage then buy a 4 banger econo box. Same goes for this Want great battery life get a dumb phone. Gotta pay to play.

One thing I noticed that did help that is not a placebo is a good auto brightness app. I use YAAB. It works wonders.

I'm on Infected 2.6 and I'm surprised at how good the battery life has been. At least, relative to other versions or ROMs. I unplugged it at midnight 2 nights ago and with light usage like you describe, I'm at 19% right now. 4G on, wi-fi off, background sync of 2 gmail accounts, Evernote and Facebook, light txting and about 2-3 phone calls.
I agree with your idea of using the phone like it's intended to be used though. If I get a full day on a charge, I'm happy.
2.7 is out now.

Yeah, get an extended battery. lol. This phone is a battery pacman regardless what ROM or what version of Android you are using. I never use Auto brightness. I just keep it down super low indoors then if I really need it I turn it up a bit outside. My phone stays on the chargers inside and out most of the time. No extended battery will last you all day at heavy use......

Should I buy? (Battery life, heat buildup, lag)

So, some people have been able to get amazing battery life out of the One, but others have had fairly major heat buildup and short battery life issues. I have also seen some posts about lag issues.
I'm deciding between this phone and the LG G2, which I have heard also has battery issues. I currently have an HTC One X+, and the battery, lag, and heat buildup are pretty bad. Battery life sucks without power saver mode, but the phone is laggy with it on, so I'm cautious about getting another HTC device. I love the build quality and developer support though.
What I want to know is, are most people having good experiences with the battery/heat buildup of the One? Have you experienced consistent lag or unreasonable battery drain? Thanks for your responses.

I've had both the AT&T One x and One, and never had issues with lag or battery life on either. I'm sure one person's 'lag' is another person's 'silky smooth', but after the project butter improvements in ICS, I must say i'v ebeen extremely impressed with how the One x then, and now, the One have performed. I also manage a full day easily out of the One's battery. Today, for example, a very average day of usage, I have so far had the phone unplugged for 14:01, had 1:56 of screen on time, and listened to about 90 minutes of Spotify streaming via cell (can't use wifi at the office). I have 46% of my batter life left, and, according to GSam, I've got about 12hrs of battery left, on average.
yesterday, i plugged my phone in after 16 hours since full charge when I woke up. pretty much same type of usage as today, except yesterday i streamed about 3 hours of Spotify over cell and i was at 31% when I went to bed.
this all includes exchanging about 45-40 texts throughout the day and typical facebooking and, most importantly, actually using BlinkFeed, as well as Feedly, for about a total of 20-25 mins throughout the day.
all of this aside, there is already a TON of this info available on xda if you do a simple search. you should feel fortunate that you got a response out of one of us!

Thanks for the reply. It's pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I know there is other stuff on XDA about this, but I couldn't seem to find posts where people explained their thoughts. Most just said, "My One did/didn't lag and had awesome/horrible battery life." Again, thanks for the response. I think I'm going to go with the One.

no problem, happy to help. just wanted to throw in the friendly reminder . have a search for the battery life and/or battery stats threads. they typically have tons of screenshots of battery life, which you can peer through to get a sense of the life people are getting and how they are getting it. those threads also tend to breed good conversations on settings tweaks people use to maximize battery life or reduce heat issues (if they present themselves).
for what it's worth, i run bone stock b/c my One is a work phone. I also forgot to mention a key factor in that I keep my screen brightness to around 30% (which is plenty bright for this phone) and have it set to timeout at 30 seconds.
I also once read a very interesting article regarding this phone employing up to 3 different LCD panel 'models' which all displayed ever-so-slightly different contrast ratios and brightness levels, which could potentially turn different results for different users. no idea where i saw that at, but it was freakishly detailed. i'm pretty sure it was linked somewhere on these boards, perhaps in the international One boards, too. anyway, interesting read if you're into that kind of thing.
get the one. the fact that 4.3 has been all but guaranteed to arrive OTA soon is wonderful. not to mention it's a beautiful piece of hardware and the boomsound speakers are light years better than anything else available. i can actually stand to listen to music/podcasts/sports broadcasts without. I thought i'd never use them but i find myself using them a lot now. especially handy for speakerphone calls in a car.
I'm thinking about selling my HTC One. I've been using my LG G2 and Moto X more now. These two devices are awesome.

These stats are after my first full charge:
After 31h 35m i left with 7%
Screen 2h 42m
Phone calls 43m
This is really great. I kept all stock, brightness is auto, screen time out not chaged. Only thing is GPS is off, except when needed. wifi is of when I am out of house.
