browser behaviour - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

on Samsung phones, also on SGS3, websites doesn't get rearranged by zooming in - that means when you zoom in a website, the text appears larger, but then it's necessary to scroll left and right to see all the content - doesn't matter which browser you use (testet with stock-browser, chrome, mozilla and dolphin). That's completly different with HTC-phones (tested with Desire HD and One X): when you zoom in using a browser (and it also doesn't matter which browser you use) then the text will be rearranged, so it's only necessary to scroll up and down, but NOT left and right - the text automatically fits in the browser window in horizontal direction! Is there any known hack or tool to get this behaviour on my SGS3? thanks Gerald

sorry for that "double-post", I've used "search", but I didn't find this post...

Check the settings so the text can fellow. Easy.

Maybe try the following in your browser on the SGS3:
Menu > Settings > Advanced > Auto-fit pages
After enabling this feature, I find that text on a website appears in a narrow column, which perfectly fills the phone's screen after zooming in using a double-tap.
I think this would only apply if the website styles are set up so that the width of the text element is relative to the width of the browser window.

you can be sure that I've searched for such a setting, but I didn't find it! Can you give me a hint where to find it?

I've this option checked, but that doesn't change anything! - HTC renders the same websites anyway completly different! And as I've mentioned: this can not be a browser-setting, because this behaviour ist browser-independent!

doesn't work on SGS3!

Maybe you could post a link to one of the websites?

you can also watch this video to see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=UtXAkNd9k68

OK, I understand what you mean now.
Zooming beyond the double-tap zoom level does not cause the text to re-flow like it does on the HTC One X.
No idea what to do about that - sorry.

correct! ;-) and this is not a "feature" from the One X, that works in the same way also on the (old) Desire HD!

I can confirm it doesnt work either. My SGS has no problem doing it on stock browser.

thanks for that hint - but this "trick" is not a solution for me, because only a few websites do provide this "special icon" - with a HTC-phone the text reflows in every browser on every website when zooming in!

Use Opera Mini. Reflows like a boss on double tap and pinch and zoom. I've tried all the browsers, and it's the only one that does it.

I hope they bring out a 2.0 that you'll be able to use....
I quite like this browser...... itd be a shame if they killed it off.........
not a bad browser but would be nice if it supported multiple tabs and pinch zooming.
why don't they just make it where of you touch a scroll bar in a page it just moves that instead of the whole page?
what's with the little arrow and hand in the top right aswell?

Usually you can type about:debug into the address bar and hit enter. This opens up several new options in settings. Scroll near the bottom, choose uastring or something similar (not looking at the phone atm) and you should have the option to choose "Desktop".
Oddly, everytime I have attempted this on the stock browser in the Vibrant it will force close everytime it starts. Not sure if it's unique to the Vibrant in general or mine specifically so maybe wait and see if anyone has had better luck before giving it a shot.
Download the "Skyfire" from the market, and at set it to "Desktop" mode, which can be found at the menu at the top of the browser.
Works for me...
Dolphin Browser
Dolphin Browser HD shows full desktop by default and allows you to view pages in mobile format. It's an excellent tabbed browser with gesture support.

Question: How to scroll a complex webpage

Hello all,
I'm new here. First post. I hope someone can help me out, please.
I'm looking at a complex web page which has a section on one side which scrolls information in contrast to the main page area which remains static. When I touch the screen and move my finger, it just moves the entire page up, as though it is all one static image.
What setting do I need to change or what add-on do I need to download to allow it to see all the information in this scroll?
The website ends in ".jsp" if that helps...
All help is greatfully appreciated!
Recheck, if javascript is enabled in options(icon top right)>settings>advanced
Try changing UID ( from android to desktop), search for it there are many threads on it, with instructions!
If still vain, Can you share the webpage? Will try a workaround.
Though, I believe, it should show up fine! Without any modifications except for javascript enabled!
Thanks for the reply!
Javascript IS enabled. I didn't have to change it.

This instruction, I do not understand. I've looked for a setting but still unsure. Can you elaborate a little, please?
I'm sure there are other threads out there. I had a quick look on this website but saw nothing. I'm not sure what keywords to use to describe what's not happening for me. New to Android...
Unfortunately, I cannot show the website as it is work-related.
Well, here it goes,
type this in browser address bar:
about:debug
than hit go
new options appear in settings,
Choose debug> uastring> change to desktop
plus rendering normal and disable wide page display, in case it helps.
UID is user identifier> implemented by browsers for web servers to identify the incoming client browser as dektop or mobile device for some good odd reason! Perhaps, ah never mind.
Lastly, try firefox browser from app market if all fails.
I got the bit about Firefox but I'm afraid I couldn't follow the rest.
I typed about:debug and it did nothing I could see. The third time, it took me to some google search results.
I could see nothing in the settings about debug... but then I'm not sur wchich part of the settings you refer to.
I tried installing flash 10.3 but this made no difference.
Does anyone have any ideas on this please?
It isn't suppose to load anything, the page remains same. New "DEBUG" option appear in "settings". Just hit the top right-corner "option" button and go to "settings" than "debug" is that complex?
Type this
about:debug
press enter
go option>Settings than debug >than uastring> than choose desktop
Well that post isn't complex, but the first one was not spelt out clearly - that's why I asked for clarification.
For some reason, even though I did the above actions the first time, the debug option never appeared. Now this time it worked but either way, selecting desktop has not fixed the main problem as per first post.
Anyone with any other ideas, please let me know. Neither desktop nor flash 10.3 has fixed the problem!!
I cannot scroll down a sub-section on an otherwise fixed web page!
Wasn't spelt correctly? Strange! As both the posts appear same to me the only addition I did in former was add firefox option. Since I can't access the webpage, have no idea about the issue perhaps discussing with your company's IT advisor may help!
"spelt out" - it's a figure of speech. Not to worry...
Yes, the IT advisor is my next option but I've always found certain IT forums have been helpful with IT issues in the past so I thought I would try this one.
Have tried the following site on native android browser, honeycomb 3.1, and all panels scroll very well with touch swipe independently from the main web page. There's a scrolling marquee panel at lower right and its auto-scrolling as meant to. Is your tablet updated to honeycomb 3.1?

Hi, I've also experienced problems with the built in Android safari based browser and also the Skyfire browser app when perusing this site that has a scrollable text box within the main page. There are days when the content in the scrollable box is large and scrollable. This will cause these two mentioned browsers on Android 3.1 to improperly display the page. (note: if you view it on a day when that list box has a short list of news items and is not scrollable, then the Android browser will display it without scrambling text over text all over the place).
I just checked the site today and it is in a state that will cause the bug.
http://www.tabletpcreview.com/
I downloaded then Opera browser app today and tried this page and it seems to display all the contents on the screen instead of presenting it in a scrollable list box. At least Opera is not over-laying the list contents text over the main page text though. Go try it and see.
Hope they will fix the Android browsers to decode all pages in future update.
try the touchwiz stock rom, the scrambled text or over-laying the list contents text over the main page issue, at the bottom of the page, is completely fixed in android browser owing to samsung's native tweaks!

Hi mughalgxt, what is this [/B]touchwiz stock rom[/B] exactly? I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 locked retail model which I have rooted and have already applied Pershoot's Overclock to 1.4Hhz kernel flash. The tablet is running fine as it except for the mentioned quirks.
Will overlaying this [/B]touchwiz stock rom[/B] directly on top of my already modified kernel and rooting mods upset anything?
Do you have a direct link you can provide here to get the exact version of this [/B]touchwiz stock rom[/B] that you recommended?
Edit Update: I just read a bit on that touchwiz stock rom modification and I does not seem perfect enough for me to risk messing up my tablet environment right now. I will wait for Samsung to release an official version for my Wi-Fi only tab 10.1.
Thank You!
[stock][eur]touchwiz rom, its directly from samsung, unmodded, on android development page posted by me! The browser displays the complex webpages unscrambled! The only notable issue is the UAstring! It tends to return to android mode from desktop on reboot! I have failed to note any notable speed boost from 1 to 1.4ghz overclocking more prone to freezes so far!Like to remain stock! If browser is your main priority than gotta try the stock rom and may revert back!

text reflow

hi does anyone know if text reflow works in the browser at every level in galaxy s3 like htc one x and galaxy nexus or is it like galaxy s2 where it just had double tap text reflow option and u werent able to adjust it at every level.
In the Phonearena video review, I'm pretty sure it showed the SIII browser as not having text reflow and the reviewer thought it was better without it unlike the One X which he criticized because of the way it handled text Reflow. personally I like the text to resize when I'm browsing on the One X.
I'm not sure if there's an option to turn on text reflow on the S3, either way I rather turn it off cause it looks like a mess when you're browsing the web. Look at the one x, it takes a few secs to rewrap the text.
Is it not like -
zoom in to what ever level you want, then double tap the text and it reflows.
I know it often works like that too.

Yup that's how it works on galaxy nexus but not on galaxy s2 so that's why wondering if it works in galaxy s3 or not ..... Any how can any one provide a link to YouTube video where the default browser is reviewed throughly of galaxy s3 ....
I for one can't do without the HTC like text reflow. If The S3 doesn't have it I suspect that will be the last straw after a sequence of disappointments...

Please don't get the S3
I'm pretty sure it doesn't have text reflow like it does on the HTC device
I was wondering about this too. IMHO text reflow is absolutely essential for a mobile browser. I don't necessarily need it to behave as aggressively as HTC usually does it but I do want at least some reflow to be possible.
I noticed on a galaxy tab 2 7.0 that I was playing around with at best buy I couldn't get text reflow to work...made me really sad, and also made me realize that even on a 7inch screen I still want this feature for browsing the web.
I saw a video posted on here (by an Alex someone I think?) that showed no text reflow on the GS3, but there was a reading mode that looked really nice. My concern is that this reading mode won't be available for all websites (he was looking at wikipedia on the phone).
Anyway if anyone finds a more definitive answer to this please post!

I'm concerned about this too. I asked the guy who made the videos about this in his thread. I asked if the reader option is available when going to the desktop version of for example gsmarena.com... I'm hoping the reader option is always there, that's the one and only thing I LOVE about Safari on the iPhone. The reader is amazing.
I hope he answers my question...
If it doesn't have it, which it has to, I can't live without it, cant some dev mod the apk to have text flow

This is always available with some third party browser like Dolphin, but it would definitely rock if the stock browser could reflow text at any level.

I checked for this yesterday when I had an S3 and didn't find any option for it I'm afraid (I also happen to think it is an important characteristic of a mobile browser). Guess I will be using Opera Mobile with the S3 too?

Apparently there's a 'reader mode' which reflows text at any zoom level but it works only for some pages with a higher content of text.

No text reflow similar to HTC unfortunately however I was pleased to.see video about led notification customization. That has actually won me over.

S3 neither do "Text reflow" nor "Auto-fit pages" after a manual "pinch to zoom", I tried it yesterday, though it has the "Auto-fit pages" option in the settings.
"Auto-fit pages", if enabled, only works for some parts of desktop web pages.
This is true for S2 and S3.

On my up to date 4.1.2 European galaxy s3 if I pinch to zoom and then tap twice on the screen, the text reflows and adapts to the screen size flawlessly. Just tried on this topic, as I searched for a solution. Thanks to the one who gave this advice!

Do you mean that the site has no mobile layout? Or the position of the image and the lists? Hard to tell without a link to the website, because it could be browser or HTML related.
Normally there are no differences between Landscape and portrait mode while browsing the web.
The website is khanacademy dot org slash exercisedashboard , ,and that site is just an example I also had that problem with other sites ,usually with pop up ads ,when i try to zoom on them they are like moving away from the screen ,with this site I am not having this problem is just that that "knowledge" map is shown on half of the page as seen in picture ,the website is working fine but It is a little frustrating having to browse like that
Another example is browsermarkwebsite ,that lower bar is just static it does not move at all, even tho the rest of the page does

I can't reproduce the problem. If I open the website it shows me the mobile optimized version of it.
Just one question: you said that you're using cm with the stock browser. Was the option 'force desktop version' checked?
Edit: Ah... You are trying to zoom on the ads? Or pop ups?
Request desktop site was on ,and try to zoom in on the white bar below when in request desktop site and then move to any direction ,for me that bar is static

If the site has the same content on the mobile optimized site you should better not use the desktop layout. Asked only to see which version you are trying to open, sorry for the misleading. It seems like the site has this behavior in the HTML source.
