good browser - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there actally any decent browser for the hd2? opera is gennerally easier to use than explorer but doesn't work flash then theres drop down menus which is just a complete ball ache on both as there's no propper way of making a selection or with other scroll bars you have to zoom in on the little arrow and click a million times.

try skyfire

skyfire not longer available in my country

Try this........

Sorry, I just realised what you mean by that.
For anyone whos interested.......
I hope they bring out a 2.0 that you'll be able to use....
I quite like this browser...... itd be a shame if they killed it off.........

not a bad browser but would be nice if it supported multiple tabs and pinch zooming.
why don't they just make it where of you touch a scroll bar in a page it just moves that instead of the whole page?
what's with the little arrow and hand in the top right aswell?

[14/2] Opera 10 Thread - Which Opera 10 Improvements do we want?

Thankfully, XDA-developers is the biggest WinMo forum in the world. that being said, we also have an immense effect on how the WinMo world looks like.
Opera proved themselves many times bringing us great browsers.
we have some problems with opera 10 not being a perfect browser right?
let's collect all improvement ideas/changes/concepts which come to mind and i'm pretty much certain they'll do whatever they can to give us what we want.
Just post what's on your mind and i'll collect it and put it here (I'd appreciate it if you posted the suggestion itself in a different color).
Nice initiative, and if perhaps we can't get Opera to make some changes to version 10, perhaps it will stimulate programmers at xda to write custom hacks for the new browser series.
1) Zoom slider like in 9.5 and 9.7 browsers. With this obviously comes pinch to zoom support on the HD2.
2) New options: enable text reflow, enable text reflow only when zoomed in, disable text reflow
3) Snapping to columns of text when doing vertical scrolling.
4) Option to display the windows taskbar when browsing, except in fullscreen mode.
5) Show downloading speed for file downloads.
6) Option to display a www homepage as the start page, instead of the 9 quick links.
7) Some implementation of the visual back feature like in recent 9.7 builds. It has to work smoother and prettier than in those builds though.
8) Option to FORCE sites to ALWAYS go to the full desktop version. No more user agent hacking.
9) Better rendering of images (images often appear in low quality even though turbo mode is off).
10) Better javascript and ajax support (for example it doesn't render Gmail with all features like chat and themes enabled).
11) Option to open new tabs in the background.
Opening tabs in the background is a must. I rage when I am browsing and trying to open a group of news articles i want to read and I have to keep hitting buttons to get back to the main page to let the things i want to read load in the background.
Text select, copy, & paste is there but it simply does not work properly.
It's should work fluently!
Image quality even in turbo mode should be better.
I've posted directly in the Opera Mobile 10 beta 2 blog post before, but I guess they don't really read it -_-...
Anyways (besides the other suggestions mentioned):
1) Full HTML 5 support so we can use the mobile Google Buzz and Mail webpages that iPhone and Android users can enjoy on their webkit browsers.
2) Automatic zoom-to-fit webpage (or a #$(*&# zoom slider). It's annoying having mobile webpages rendered and not filling the entire screen.
text size adjust?
1.) Zoom does not work in landscape correctly
2.) Zoom slider like in 9.5 and 9.7 browsers. With this obviously comes pinch to zoom support on the HD2.
3.) Option to display the windows taskbar when browsing, except in fullscreen mode.
4.) Fix text input problem, it lag's like hell when I am typing smth!
5.) Better rendering of images (images often appear in low quality even though turbo mode is off).
I'll add flash integration (I know beta 3 has flash support) and divx web player intergration.
Cheers

Not in my experience.
When scrolling, I want to have the possibility to scroll up/down OR left/right. Not both at the same time.

not for me too... opera mobile 10 beta 3 is much more stable and faster then beta 2.
Fingertouch
I'd like Fingertouch to finally be implemented in the WinMo version. It really would help me hit those tiny links on my QVGA touchscreen.
If you don't know what fingertouch is, look here:
(This was originally a link to operas fingertouch press release, but since I'm not allowed to post links , you'll just have to google it.)
If it is already out there, I wasn't able to find it.
It shouldn't require 2xclicks on the red cross to close a tab button and 3x just to get to Bookmarks from viewing a web page!
Just my 2 cents.
pinch zoom for my hd2
FLASH SUPPORT!!!! Skyfire is kicking Operas ass right now
For me the browser of my dreams would be :
Opera Mini 5, but including Flash...
I find Opera Mini so fast and convenient compared to Opera Mobile...

Adding notes to side of pdf?

Wondering how I could add notes to the side of a PDF. As in the area on the PDF itself is cluttered and full so adding notes directly on it isn't possible (attached a screenshot to show what I mean). Would love to be able to add an area to the side of each page to add notes (so push the actual page over to the left and have the right area for notes)
So any app capable of this? or anyway to add some extra blank area to the right of all my PDF pages which would allow me to put freewriting and text boxs on it?
Try sign my pad from the Market. I believe it has what you're looking for.

hmmmm, not sure if it fits the bill. Looking at it in market seems to only be for signing pdfs and not so much note taking/annotating.
I have the program, it does allow you to add text/notes to the PDF.

Interesting. Do you have ezpdf? are the annotating options similar to what you could find there?
No I dont have ezpdf so I cant compare the two, sorry.
No prob, thanks for the suggestion.
Just downloaded it for a test run and doesnt seem like its a viable option. Even importing and organizing my pdfs would be a huge pain and it keeps a portrait sized view even in landscape mode, along with other things.
Sorry it didn't work out for you.
hah i'm a med student too... i know exactly waht you're looking for. re-print the pdf's in adobe from your computer.
on adobe acrobat x for pc:
open up pdf in adobe (or any other pdf viewer i guess)
print to adobe pdf
under page handling, page scaling: multiple pages per sheet
select 1 by 1 or 1 by 2, etc whatever you want for margins. this should give you a margin on each side of each slide. play around with these features to get what you want, if possible.
there should also be an option to print the notes lines to the right of the slide when you print. either that or it's a powerpoint feature.
as for actual note-taking on the TFP, try ez pdf or repligo reader. the sticky notes work if all else fails, but text boxes should work on the sides there.
if only the pdf apps had callout boxes... :\

Awesome thanks! this looks very promising.
I am using expdf for notes (or at least plan to at this point) but I have found my text boxes and free hand annotations won't show outside the pdf's "image". If in your way I can basically extend the right side of the image as a blank area that would be amazing! The stickies look like they will work but it would definitely be nice to be able to read the notes while still able to see the slide.
Going to give this a shot and report back soon.
edit. looks like I need to get adobe acrobat x since I only have adobe reader. Will give this a shot tomorrow. I am assuming standard is fine for this task?
I use stickies with repligo reader. I find it to be much faster, ezpdf lags on page turns while repligo is super smooth.
Sent from my Galaxy S2
So playing around with it I think I found an even better way to do it.
Instead of doing the multiple page option what I did was put page scaling to None
Then unchecked auto-rotate and center
then went into page setup and changed the paper from letter to legal.
This puts the image competely on the left hand side with a large margin on the right hand side for notes (although I could see sometimes wanting margins on both sides for maybe taking notes and putting arrows to things in the slide, but just check auto-rotate and center and then you will have 2 smaller margins on each side, with little space on top)
So this way is pretty sweet because it gives you the large margin on the right side for notes, plus the aspect ratio is basically the same as the primes screen!
But there is a bit of an oddity with this process right now. When I saved it, it saved and all my slides were upside down. They were in the right order but all were upside down for some reason. Figure this should be able to be fixed somehow (tried rotating the page in adobe acrobat and then "printing" but that didn't work, guessing there's something I need to change in the printer settings). And even if not you can rotate 180 degrees in ezpdf easily enough (which puts the margin on the left side, not a big deal).
Thanks again for the heads up, this is really going to help taking notes on this thing!
edit. if there is some way to ungray that margins box in my first attached pic, then could maybe even modify it some more.

I would prefer to not use stickies if at all possible just because it would be nice to see my notes right beside the slides as opposed to only being able to see one or the other, just like if I was doing it by hand.
I checked out repligo and while it does seem faster then expdf and it doesn't seem to have a good way to organize a bunch of different classes lecture notes within it. Also the toolbar to select either a free note or text box etc keeps hiding itself and I don't see a setting ot keep it up (and even then have to go through a pull down menu to select one).

Thanks I will check it out. Ezpdf really isn't that bad for lagging (although haven't opened up any super big pdf's on it yet), and it is really nice and easy for highlighting, sticky notes, text boxes, free hand and everything like that which is awesome. But ill check out mantano and see how that one stacks up!

Its grayed out and not letting me manually change them. Not sure how to ungray them so I can do that, or if there's any other place to do it.
Would be nice to use that, but really just changing the page size to legal and pushing the image over to the side looks like it will be just fine for me. Gives a good sized blank space to the right for any notes

The only custom size option is somehting like "post script custom size" option and it somehow doesn't allow me to choose any sizes or margins which is weird.
Just figured this out. Download foxit reader and under print, select Custom Scale and print to like 75%. #Win.

Not a widget, it opens an actual window that sits on top of anything else open, and you can resize it to anything you want. So you can have youtube open on top of something and use both windows. I bought it, it's really good

Not to take anything away from your hard work in developing the product, but doesn't Sony's ICS update next month render this useless for Sony tablet owners? The ICS update should include "mini apps" that will run on top of other programs for ease of use and multi-tasking.
If I'm completely wrong, my apologies, I claim ignorance.
Outstanding app, thank you for the heads-up cuts103!

browser behaviour

on Samsung phones, also on SGS3, websites doesn't get rearranged by zooming in - that means when you zoom in a website, the text appears larger, but then it's necessary to scroll left and right to see all the content - doesn't matter which browser you use (testet with stock-browser, chrome, mozilla and dolphin). That's completly different with HTC-phones (tested with Desire HD and One X): when you zoom in using a browser (and it also doesn't matter which browser you use) then the text will be rearranged, so it's only necessary to scroll up and down, but NOT left and right - the text automatically fits in the browser window in horizontal direction! Is there any known hack or tool to get this behaviour on my SGS3? thanks Gerald

Maybe try the following in your browser on the SGS3:
Menu > Settings > Advanced > Auto-fit pages
After enabling this feature, I find that text on a website appears in a narrow column, which perfectly fills the phone's screen after zooming in using a double-tap.
I think this would only apply if the website styles are set up so that the width of the text element is relative to the width of the browser window.

thanks for that hint - but this "trick" is not a solution for me, because only a few websites do provide this "special icon" - with a HTC-phone the text reflows in every browser on every website when zooming in!
Use Opera Mini. Reflows like a boss on double tap and pinch and zoom. I've tried all the browsers, and it's the only one that does it.

[Q] Can't get text to wrap properly on browsers

I'm coming from a Samsung Droid Charge which offered no option to choose font size (tiny, small, normal, large etc.). On that phone I downloaded an app which allowed me to adjust the font to whatever percentage I was comfortable with (chose 120%). After that, all the browsers, and most sites, allowed pinch and zoom. I could easily obtain a readable font (for me), and the browsers and sites, immediately adjusted their layout so that the text wrapped around almost perfectly, almost all the time.
Here I am with the SG4, 4.2, (not rooted and afraid to try). It offers a choice of font sizes and I chose large. NONE of the browsers I'm using adjust easily and well to wrapping around and they do not offer the wonderfully adjustable pinch and zoom. I can't read most things on the web without squinting or scrolling horizontally because the wrap is for a wider font. I no longer have the pinch/zoom option. The app I used to use to adjust the size of the font, and a few other apps I've tried, have no effect anymore. My present browser choices are Chrome Beta, Opera Beta, the stock browser and UC Browser.
So I have a nice large high resolution screen on which to read, but I cannot find a way to make the text conform to the width/size of the screen and I can't read on it very well at all. I used to comfortably read about 2 hours/day on the Droid Charge and was expecting to do at least as well.
Suggestions? Help?
Thanks.

I never rooted the Droid Charge but did become very skilled at cursing and at finding apps to do a lot of what it wouldn't do and hadn't even thought of.
If I root the SG4, shouldn't I wait until all the "best" chip flashes are settled? And until I understand more about rooting. Is there a good description of what you get when you're done? I know I'd "lose" all the unwanted Verizon apps and Samsung apps. Would I also "lose" the Google apps, most of which I don't want? And could I keep the things I do like or do they all go?
As you can see, I'm nervous about it. Funny, I can take apart a computer, replace a motherboard etc., but I guess I feel I really don't understand how the phones work as well as I understand computers, drives etc.
Thanks for your encouragement and I may reach that point sooner than I know
You can re add apps you dont want, with hyperdrive rom ota he has all those apps ready for download and install. There is a video that explains it and u cannot fail if u follow the directions. I get nervous everytime but when its done, i dont ever know why i was nervous in the first place lol. If it messes up, u can flash back to stock just as easily. Its hard to actually hard brick a phone. As long as it powers into download mode, u are good to go
