[Q] mobile hotspot - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hello all,
I have searched the various posts and threads relating to my issue but have not been able to find and answer so here it goes.
I am all of sudden having a tethering issue with my s2. I used to be able to tether my laptops and any other cell phone to my s2 as a wifi hotspot. I am rooted with the stock 2.3.4 rom. uckh7, kernal version 2.6.3.5.7 that has CWM. I have titanium backup pro installed and have always had the tethering mangager app frozen. Now my laptops and other phones will show connected to my s2 network but will not connect to internet even after rebooting ipad and laptops.. I can connect ok using usb tethering. I have tried configuring the hotspot app with and without security, tried various passwords with and without alpha numerical sequences, I have tried FoxFi, and the latest WiFi tether app, and all have same results. I have removed the tether manager completly using TB and still same. I also performed a restore from CWM and still the same. I have not performed a factory reset yet because I believe all that does is remove all user data, not change the system data. I don't want to bring it to an ATT service store because I don't want an exchange unit that will more than likely have the 2.36 rom.
I don't know if I should try to reflash with the stock 2.3.4 or what??
I am at a loss right now.. Sorry for being so wordy, I just didn't want to forget anything if i could.
Any and all thoughts, advise, recommendations appreciated
Thanks

Did you flash the zedomax kernel? It's known to mess up wifi. Flash back to stock.

thanks for the reply,
I flashed codeworkx kernel 5.0.2.3 with cwm. used supeoneclick root to root phone.
wifi has always worked and still is.

Maybe try unfreezing what's "always frozen"? Might be worth a try.

I have unfrozen tethering manager, unistalled it thru tb and reinstalled. If I try to use mobile hotspot without tethering manager frozen or uninstalled I get the warning that my account is not provisioned for tethering. If I freeze or uninstall the tethering manager than I can use the mobile hotspot and other devices see my network and connect, but no data is transferred.
Should I just reflash the stock 2.3.4 rom?
I can use tethering ok with my rooted captivate running Cog 5 gingerbread rom ok.
any thoughts??

Full wipe is going to be easier than bug hunting. And yes, a full wipe does clear out ROM settings and files which brings it back to its "default" state. To do a full wipe make sure you:
1.Wipe data/factory reset
2.Wipe Cache
Under Advanced in CWM
3.Wipe Dalvik Cache
4.Wipe /system
You should flash jivy's kernel cleaning script as well before flashing entropy's kernel (mostly just a good practice to have). Hopefully this will clear up your issue.

Thanks,
will try this evening and report back on results.

quick question regarding wiping and clearing cache, etc.
will I loose root after cleaning??

No, as long as the rom you're already on is rooted it will stay. Again this just resets THE ROM to default essentially. The personal data on your internal SD will be for the most part untouched, just the app data will be gone, and a essentially fresh rom install.
Edit note:5 mins is a rediculous waiting period TO EDIT A POST.

thanks for that.
sorry for the delay in reposting question, posting between clients at work.
appreciat the help

ok. wiped everything cleaned kernel, installed entropy's kernel.
still the same.
I did notice something peculiar this afternoon. tried using the hotspot app at work where signal is poor. co-workers phone was able to connect to my hotspot and get on internet until i noticed my signal jumped to Hspa+ then he lost internet?? any relevance to that??

I wiped, did reset, cleaned existing kernel, installed entropy's kernel. Tried again but still no devices could get data signal thru my hotspot although the connected to my network. I was playing with a coworkers phone later and his phone was able to connect and receive data. I noted at that time that my phone was only on 3g data not 4g. As soon as I moved the position of my phone to where it received a 4g signal then my coworkers phone would no longer receive data thru my network??? any significance to that????
thanks in advance for all your time.

:thanks for all the responses. Finally solved. On a whim I went into mobile network settings, went into APNs and hit "reset to default" and retried the mobile hotspot again and now everything works, all my devices now receive data and can connect to internet again.
thanks again to all.

You're welcome from all of us.

[Q] Data connection not working after flashing custom rom :'(

I'm having a problem since I flashed the sensation rom (by crysis21) on my SGS2 yesterday.
My internet connection (mobile network) doesn't work anymore
I checked the APN settings and already resetted them and enterd my APN settings again. But it still doesn't work. I also restarted the phone multiple times.
Does anybody know where the problem is?
Installation steps were:
*copying the rom to sd
*CF-rooting the kernel via Odin
*booted up in CWM recovery and chose "install from zip file" and installed the rom (without any wipes)
Before I had the default samsung factory rom on it.
Have I made a mistake?

Have you checked the APN settings are the good ones? One thing is to have ones enabled and other totally different is to have ones that actually work.
Also when you go from Stock to Custom ROM you should do a full wipe!
Go to CWM and format /system, /data, /cache and reinstall the ROM.

thanks, I'll check this out as soon as I get home.
I refrain a little from doing a full wipe because I don't want to get all my apps deleted (and I'm a little too lazy to perform a backup). Would mybe a new modem solve this problem?
And of course I checked the APN settings. I deleted the existant APN setting and added a new one so the settings can't be the problem.
I also checked some entries in Settings/Phone Info/Status.
It says here (translated from german):
Mobile Network Type: HSDPA
Service State: Function (or working rather)
Mobile Network Status: Disconnected (but sometimes it says also connecting here, though it never really gets conencted)
regards,
lunatikk
Even though I wiped everything, the data connection still doesn't work.
I did
"Wipe data/factory reset"
"Wipe cache partition"
"Wipe Dalvik cache"
and after that I installed the Sensation rom zip file again.
The data connection still doesn't work :'( (I added the APN after install, of course - the settings are 100% correct).
I also installed another rom (infected rom) but there's still no data connection.
Am I missing something? I'm getting really desperate over here.

lunatikk
You could try flashing another Stock ROM via Odin and see if in stock works or not, then try a Custom ROM.
Sometimes the phone takes a while once you flash a new ROM till it establishes a decent 3G connection. Having "Data enabled", how much did you wait for the phone to establish a connection?

I thought so too... Well, at work I waited some hours for the data connection being established but nothing happened.
This is crazy. I even restored my system with CWM and it still ain't working.
As soon as my GF comes home I'll replace the sim cards. Maybe the problems at the providers side...
after that, I'll try a stock rom (via odin).
thanks for your tip

I have the same problem and I'm on check rom.
i'm having the exact same problem, but with multiple roms and not just one. i tried omega and delv. both of these are giving me no data connection (only at the beginning) but once i restart there's no data connection.
did you manage to figure out what went wrong? I've resulted in my original rom that i had by restoring it using cwm.
dear sir,
my device is micromax canvas a1 aq4501. when I recovering a custom rom like cm13 my device Internet data not connected. I fully checked setting like mobile data, apn, but it still not working.
now I want my device situable custom rom. please give me the right information.

[Q] WiFi suddenly stopped working

I've tried it all folks. New kernels, factory reset, different radios, different ROMs. Every-thing. The WiFi will turn on for a quick second and I will get an error message "Unable to scan for networks" and then the Wifi will just turn on and off on and off over and over again. I've even deleted the files in the data/dhcp and data/wifi folders. Rebooted, still same issue. I've deleted the files and flashed a kernel and rebooted, still same issue.
Of course I am still in contract and will have to purchase a new phone outright from Verizon if I can't get this issue resolved......
I don't know what else to do here.....
Did you try formatting data and system before installing a new rom from recovery? If that doesn't work i would say its a hardware issue. You're not restoring system data with any backup programs are you?
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I've wiped pretty much everything known to man on the phone. The ROM installs are all "fresh" I haven't tried to install any APPS on the phone. Just wipe everything, factory reset / Dalvik Cache, all of it... install fresh ROM. Try to turn on Wifi, phone boot loops. No matter what ROM I install, still same issue with Wifi / boot looping.
Well guess we can close this out. I went out and paid full boat for a Samsung Nexus since I couldn't fix this issue.
I'd like to reopen this topic. I had been running Bamf Forever 1.10, but last night I decided to try another ROM because it's been running really slow for some reason.
Did a wipe (factory reset, Dalvik cache) and installed Thunderstick. Now WiFi is broken -- the exact same problem as described in the original post. I tried flashing a new kernel and new radios, and cannot get WiFi to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Will flashing back to stock ROM/unrooting help?
Thanks!
@ajoesq I had the same problem when i installed thunderstick thru boot manager. My wifi stopped and I could get it going on my phone rom. So i booted back into thunderstick and wifi was working. Booted back to hte phone rom then into recovery and then i flashed my phone rom again without wiping or anything (Thunbershed V1.2) and it worked fine. wifi started agian.

Run a logcat when you try to turn wifi on. Put the output on pastebin.com and post the link. This might tell us what the problem is.
I'd make sure that the radio(s) were at least at the minimum of what the ROM called for.

[Q] No data connection after new rom flashed

Hi all,
I've flashed quite a few times before I settled with my current Insanity rom. But then I decided to try out some new ones since I have time during the holidays.
I tried flashing Omega and Delv with cwm (Whatever version they currently have now), both at the startup didn't allow me to bypass by pressing the 4 corners. i thought nothing of it and just continued on and restored my stuff using titanium backup. before my sms, gmail accounts and call logs will get restored but it didn't for both. so i decided to restart my phone to see if it'll come up. it did not. in fact, the data connection goes missing. (i did get data connection when i first loaded up the phone right after the flash using cwm) i only have full bar of signal, but no data.
I thought it was just a rom thing or a bad download, that's why I tried flashing another rom, but once I restart my phone, the data connection goes.
I got so frustrated that I just restored my old (current) rom from cwm.
If anyone can help me on finding out what may be the problem, that'll be great. I really do want to start flashing different roms again because I'm getting bored with my current one.
thanks in advance!

I'm sorry my English award is not very good I am a Chinese.
can you make sure that you have wipe your phone 2 times?
wipe data factory reset and wipe cache partition? before you flash a new rom?
and the problem may be your kernel don't work well . you can flash another new kernel or flash a new cwm
wipe your phone is very important
if these mind can not make your data well you should flash your phone
by odin . use this software to make your phone well
thank you for your reply.
I have wiped my phone very thoroughly: wipe cache, factory reset and even dalvik.
aren't the kernels automatically installed when i install through CWM?
i'm not too sure about this kernel thing as the many times I flashed before, I never had to install kernels on its own through odin. i just flash the zip file of the rom through CWM and it's all good.
so you're saying i should use odin to flash instead of cwm? is there a major difference? i'm much more comfortable with cwm though.
Try flashing a new modem .
Check IMEI is correct .

Have you set your APN settings correctly according to your phone carrier's settings?
Also try your carrier's CSC on your phone.
Set your APN manually, I had this before as well...
Other options is to get the Tweaker App from the Market and when connected via Wifi then it sets your APN as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The APN one sounds easier to do. That option's under wireless and networks correct?
Currently, I only have one selected. I'll check it out when I flash the new rom.
What's this csc though??

Stuck on boot screen and have tried many, many times...

The gist of my problem: Earlier today I successfully installed the latest CM9 from Joker (.0.7.0.0). Unfortunately, all wireless services other than WIFI were down (including SMS and telephone), and on start the phone produced an error about the com.android.phone force closing (or some such). I figured I had screwed something up, so I reflashed the clean stock firmware.
Since then (roughly 12 hours ago), I've been getting the stuck on the boot screen whenever I try flashing CM9. Relevant details follow:
Logcat doesn't help -- it tosses an error about the shell directory or file not being found (the exact error message escapes me, but I can reproduce it if need be).
I've tried formatting cache, data, and system, followed by a wipe (or two) on several occasions.
I've also tried flashing various versions of CM9 -- specifically .0.7.0.0 and .3.1. Both give the same result. I've also tried whatever version is in the KitchenSink v2.11 installer. Same result.
My CMW version is the 5.0.2.8. I installed it through RomManager (as opposed to the command prompt on Windows, which I did the first time when it quasi-worked). I've read that using v2 fixes this issue, but I can't find a live copy anywhere, so I haven't been able to try it.
Rather than going for a completely new install every time I bork something, I made a backup just after I finished unlocking and rooting the phone. I just restore that backup after each attempt, and it goes back to working fine on the stock Android firmware (3.whatever).
Any ideas? I think I'll try starting completely from scratch again and not using RomManager tomorrow, but if anyone can point out my error before then and save me a lot of -- hopefully not wasted -- effort, it would be fantastic.
Cheers,
Vash

Use this recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218417
Or jokers at http://forum.jokersax.com/discussion/25/joker-recovery-for-the-photon-v3
I use the first link. Works perfect. Once you install the recovery. Wipe everything. Install 0.3.1. Boot into the system. Go back and flash the newest 0.7.0 update with gapps.
Should fix all the issues.

Well, I got .3.1 working. Then tried to install .7 and it crapped itself again. Should I have cleared all the data/caches/etc. between the two?
Edit - I tried it again but this time cleared all the data between installs. It booted, but I got the same 'android.phone failed to start' message.
Edit 2 - Alright, I think I got it. I didn't clear anything between the two installs, but I installed each firmware twice without exiting recovery mode either time. It seems to be working (phone works, at least), although I'm not sure my 3G is working...

Joker's recovery is a zip file you can flash from 5.0.2.8 if you don't feel like hooking up to the computer and using fastboot. But 5.0.2.8 doesn't work right to flash roms.

Yep...already did that and got it to boot just fine. Now I'm struggling with poor reception. I've seen other users (different phones) mention radio upgrades, but I was extremely unfamiliar with the terminology. The phone seems to work okay, but I only get 1x reception for data.
Or were you actually suggesting to repeat the entire process?
Edit - Tried again, still no luck with 3G.

Before doing what i stated did you wipe everything (system, data, cache, dalvik)? Also, you still getting a forceclose upon boot or just crap signal? And are you on sprint or electrify?

well did you have 3g on stock? there's no reason it would go to 1x unless 3g is unavailable. the rom shouldn't cause it to go into 1x.

Yep. Despite popular belief, I'm not a moron =) I'm in the dead center of 3G availability for Sprint in my area, and with stock android I get perfect 3G reception. I've read reports of the same things happening to other people, but haven't found a solution yet. I restored to stock after making a backup to try updating the PRL. I'll update again when I find out if it worked or not.
Edit - Sprint just sucks, apparently. http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=225908
When I rebooted to stock I checked the radio status and sure enough, 1xRTT. Evidently I am a moron =p
There was something wrong with the phone afterall. To fix it, I did the following:
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
You'll be presented with a menu. Go to Phone Information.
About halfway down the page, there will be a menu with a dropdown. Mine was set to CDMA. To fix the issue, I changed it to CDMA auto (PRL). I'm now receiving excellent 3G reception.

Problems with WI-FI / Mobile Data - D6503

Hi everyone! I installed a custom rom (PureX Z2 Premium v1.0 23.4.A.1.264 5.1.1) yesterday and everything seemed to be working great. But when i left home today and i lost my wifi connection, i noticed that the phone didn't establish any 3g/4g connection. So i looked around in the settings and realized that i couldn't activate mobile networks when i had wifi enabled, but when i disable wifi, the mobile network works like a charm.
I installed the rom from an unrooted, stock rom device, and it wasn't any problem to have both wifi and mobile networks activated pre custom rom installation. So that mobile network took over when i lost wifi connection. I thought this was standard behaviour for android?
Anyway, im wondering: Could this be a problem (or even a "feature") in the custom rom? Anyone else had this problem? Is there a standard android option in the settings for this? If not, is there any app/xposed mod that could fix this for me?
just re install the rom, I had the same problem with PureX Z2 v11 the first time, after that so far no problem.
I hope you serve, Greetings
Thanks for the reply!
Should i redo the entire process including wipe data / factory reset, or can i just re-flash the rom without losing any data?
