Hi,
I've been away for a while butbefore I left it seemed there was no way of rooting .21 without unlocking the device which is something I won't do as my camera is faulty and so will need to get around to RMAing it in the future.
My question is, is there any way to root .21 without unlocking the device?
Thanks.

Yes, there is!
1. Downgrade to .15 (There is a method by user wolf, youll find it...)
2. Root the TFP
3. Install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper und Backup your Root
4. Upgrade to .21 via OTA
5. Restore your Root via OTA Rootkeeper
//Use Method 2 to downgrade:

^ +1 verified yesterday with a new .15 out of the box, sparkyroot apk, ota update and voodoo ota rootkeeper. Works like a charm.
I think I'm gonna try this tonight.
Question for ya... what do I need in terms of drivers for windows? Do I need to pre-install any drivers so that windows can recognize the Prime, or do I just connect it via USB?

Just download ViperMOD. Theres a ReadMe and it includes all drivers you need.
I installed the Android SDK wich includes all drivers, but Im sure the driver included in ViperMOD will also work.
HI,
There is no way I can connect my TF201 to adb. I'm using virtualbox for win XP. Is it an issue?
Will the ViperMod work using a Mac or is it Windows specific?
On a side note - My bootloader is unlocked, would my root process be the same or change? Thanks in advance!

This maybe an issue. Be sure to forward the USB-Port the TFP is connected to to the Virtual Machine.

If your Bootloader is unlocked you can just flash a pre-rooted ROM. I dont know if the ViperMOD-Method also works.

I will start off by apologizing for my ignorance, but I am new to rooting. I have had my Atrix for i guess a month or two now and I am wanting to root it. I just dont know where to start for rooting I've read that superoneclick isnt good to use and I tried aRoot but when i opened titanium backup it is saying it isnt rooted. Does anyone else have links to other threads helping with rooting or a Faq or tutorial on how to? Im not sure how to even get the files onto my phone and such and help will be greatly appreciated thank you all very much!
the superoneclick and aroot threads have all of the info you need to root your phone. if you cannot manage to do it by following the instructions already provided i really dont think you should be messing with your phone. they are basically one click solutions. i have tried both and they worked as described. you might want to go to youtube and watch videos of it being done

Good luck. Just make sure to use a short filename if you have problems with RSDLite. Some people aren't able to flash because of that. I was one of them but it flashed just fine.
Enable Wifi and enter your MotoBlur ID and you'll be able to go ahead and root on 1.2.6. Then you can check for updates and run the update. Use GladRoot as there's a rooting batch file, as well as another file to run after you upgrade. It also enables Sideloading (non-market apps) as well as tethering if you so wish.
If you can get ADB working then you won't have any trouble.

Hi
I should hopefully get my TF Prime today, and I just had a few questions.
1. What should I check when I receive it? Light Bleed, Dead Pixels, WiFi Performance? Any other recommendations?
2. Any decent apps to perform the above checks?
3. I imagine my device will come with Honeycomb, I will be performing the ICS update when possible, however, I would like to root my tablet (assuming that it can be reversed for possible warranty purposes). Would I be better to root my tablet while in Honeycomb, run Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, and then upgrade to ICS and restore root?
4. What is the best method to root (as per the above question)?
I do plan on unlocking my bootloader, but only after I have had the device for a while to confirm that I have no issues.
Cheers
Stewart
Check the link in my Sig for what to check ..
Rooting, you cant go wrong with the Vipermod tool, just run the updates as normal up to .15 then use the vipermod tool to root (only root, dont do anything else unless you want to unlock the bootloader .. i'm waiting for a while)
once rooted, download OTA Rootkeeper from the market which will protect your root when they release the next update.

Yeah 9.4.2.15 (.15) is the latest version we have. soon to be .16 i'm let to believe.
Thats it just arrived!
Plugged it in to charge and it automatically turned on, so had a quick play, set up wifi etc and had a look for light bleed etc - all good so far!
Connected to WiFi no probs either, going to let it charge for a while before firing it up again!
Also checked that my Serial number was not "Unknown" either! All good! C20KA serial number, gold from Amazon!
Cheers again.

Make sure you read the instructions before doing it ... its not hard, but just incase.
P.S. dont have the dock plugged in.
Should I select option 1, for 9.x.x.11? Even though I have .15 installed?
There isn't an option for .15.
Also, I have the ADB Drivers listed in Device Manager as needed, however, when I "adb devices", the Prime is not in the list!

1. With Prime on .15 update (or earlier), get root
2. Install OTA rootkeeper
3. Upgrade to .21
4. Use OTA rootkeeper to get root back
This is the only way to have root on a stock .21 build.
If you upgrade to .21 before rooting and installing OTA rootkeeper, your cannot root (currently).

It's really simple, you must root before updating to .21, save your root with something like Voodoo RootKeeper, and then restore your root after updating. There is currently no way to do an original root on .21.
re
perfectly understood right now
the problem is that i'm already on .21 and i think i can't donwgrade right?
so i've to wait for next root system

This is from my post to another person with the same problem. In addition to the steps here, you'll also need to find and download adb.exe, fastboot.exe, and associated files. It's not that hard, you can do it.
I lost root on my TF201 after flashing Craig Gomez's us-tf201-jro03c-10.4.2.15-stock-deodexed.zip ROM. In addition to losing root access, I still had Superuser installed, and it would not grant superuser permission to anything I was trying to use to fix the problem, such as Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, GooManager, etc. Also, Superuser did not even have superuser permission, but could not be deleted in the File Manager. Another big problem is that I could not boot into recovery, and I could not downgrade to ICS.
After trying a number of possible solutions that I found on this and other sites, I discovered Urkel's Fresh Start 1.0.zip. Here's the post:
<http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32677560>
If you are at a dead end, I highly recommend that you give this a try! Your bootloader needs to be unlocked, but I had already done that when I was still using ICS. I'm not sure if the unlock tool available on the Asus site will work with JB. All you have to do is download the Urkel's Fresh Start zip file to your computer, unzip it to the same folder on your computer where you have adb and fastboot, add the JB ROM that you want to use to that folder, and rename the ROM file to system.blob. You'll also need to install the drivers on your computer so that it can send data to your TF201. I used the drivers that are on the Microsoft site, but there is a link to some universal drivers in the post above. Connect the cable from your TF201 to a USB port on your computer, and after deciding which option you want to try, double click Fresh Root.bat or Fresh Start.bat. Fresh Start.bat will first install the TWRP 2.2.2.1 recovery (that's what recovery.blob is). It will then install whatever JB ROM you decided to use. I went with the 10.4.2.15 ROM that's now on the ASUS site. The Urkel batch file may then restore root access, but that didn't work for some reason in my case. I think my problem was not mounting \System. You can do this by booting into TWRP recovery that you now have, select the Mount button, and put an X in the top box. In my case it seems that the box becomes unchecked during reboot. I tried it several times and gave up, but there is another simple way to regain root access if you have made it this far. Download Superuser-3.2-arm-signed.zip and flash that using TWRP, and you will at long last have root access once again. I see that this file has already been mentioned in this thread, and it worked like a charm for me.

Questions Tf201 4.1.1

Hello all. I'm about to try rooting my TF201 JB 4.1.1 and was hoping to ask a few questions about the method from the link quoted above. I couldn't ask them there because it's my first time on xda-developers.
1) I don't know which JB update to get from the ASUS website, if its supposed to be the newest firmware from my region, or the earlier firmware which actually updated the OS to Jelly Bean?
2) Are the Urkel's software, the JB update from the ASUS website, and the drivers all that is needed as far as downloads go that will be needed for root? (Have already unlocked the bootloader)
Thank you for any help.
This was fantastic! Unlocking is a breeze, and your follow up on flashing Super User manually saved my day.
Okay,I posted recently about my old z ultra. I bought the z ultra off Craigslist and it was updated to 5.0.
Anyhow the screen got the dreaded 'hairline' Crack in the screen and Sony covered it.
They sent me a new phone international version and the first thing I checked were the hidden functions in the dialer. Rooting status says yes or bootloader rather. Also the phone is still running 4.3. I did some searching and found a root method. I don't want kingroot or any Chinese crap.
Do I need a computer? Can I root using towelroot? Install busboy? DL cwm and flash via the phone?

Nope. Towelroot does not work on 4.3. I hope my phone doesn't force a system update. I'm still 4.3 for now.
Not a gpe edition either
Screw it. I think I'll just take the update
This is why im tempted to multi post. A moderator warned against multi post. Ive had this post up for a few days now and ive not got one answer.
I need to know about 4.3 jellybean. My phone was shipped with it. Do i have to use flashtool? Whats the first step? I haven't taken the update. Im still 4.3
PLEASE ANSWER
Hello there lonely islander! I'm randomly passing through with my ship, and I caught your smoke signals.
I can't really remember the root situation on 4.3, but there were quite a few rooting tools in the cross-development section. Not sure if those were for 4.1 or 4.3 though. I'll do some digging and I'll be back.
What's the firmware version? .290?
EDIT: Okay, so I've done some searching, and this method was the one that people used back on 4.3. It's not perfect though since it required the use of Vroot, which is/was the same type of rooting tool as Kingroot, so that's probably a no-go.
Another way of doing it would be to downgrade to a firmware that's supported by towelroot. That would be 4.1? 4.2? Find out which version is compatible and find that firmware FTF in the Dev section. You'll probably have to do some digging since a 4.x ROM thread will be quite old. Flash it using Flashtool and then root with towelroot.
But...
What's your plan now? Backup the TA partition (DRM-files) and then unlocking the bootloader, update to 5.1.1 and easily root again through fastboot since your B/L is unlocked? Or are you planning to keep the bootloader locked and live the rest of your life on an ancient Android version?
EDIT 2: Have you tried this tool on 4.3? It's based on Towelroot, but it's customized for rooting Xperia devices. I think that maybe, probably, it'll work on 4.3. I don't know, so go ahead and just try it unless you've already done it.
EDIT 3: Okay, so it looks like the tool provided in "Edit 2" should be compatible with Android versions up to 4.4.2 before being patched by Google/Sony in 4.4.3/4.4.4 (KitKat), so it should in theory work on 4.3.
EDIT 4: OKay, I have no idea what's real anymore. I just stumbled upon this post from that thread:
v 12.4 worked like a charm on my Xperia Z Ultra C6802 (4.4.4).
Did TA backup. Installed SU chainfire and updated binary in normal mode. Got write to external SD card ability on my Total Commander without any SDFix app. Thanks.

So... just go ahead and try it. If it fails, then you can downgrade using Flashtool if you're into that.
Build is 136. No,you are correct. King root is king crap. Im not going back there. The bootloader status says yes. Will i have to use the sony web site to unlock bootloader? Yes, i want root and i want too flash roms.
So,can i just root and install safestrap, superSU or do i have to unlock BL.
I could update to 4.4.....
Okay. Forget what i want. Tell me the steps i need to take. Im on 4.3. Build136. Yes i wanna root and i wanna rom..

Alright. First step is to test and see if that root tool I linked to in my previous post works. If it does, great. If it doesn't, it'll get a little more time consuming.
But the important question here is: Do you care about the DRM files? They control mostly the camera which will be a little affected by the loss of the keys. It'll happen either way when you unlock the bootloader, but backing them up allows you to restore them later if you ever re-lock the bootloader for some reason.
So you can either:
1. Backup the DRM files, but doing that requires root, which is fairly hard to obtain with a locked bootloader, which you are currently witnessing.
2. Ignore the loss of the DRM files and unlock the bootloader right now. When you have unlocked the bootloader it'll allow you to boot and flash custom code, like a custom kernel with recovery (CWM/TWRP/Philz) which again allows you to flash SuperSU and be done with it, or flash a different ROM. It's the easiest way, but you'll lose the DRM keys. They might become handy if you have to send your device in for repairs down the road (if you have any warranty left, that is)
So what you need to decide right now is what you want to do.
Should i update? the next update is 4.4.2. I could take it then use watevr roottool. So root first then unlock bootloader

Root bootloader status says yes..do i need to mess with it?

Alright, now we know.
If bootloader status says YES on unlocked, then it's already unlocked, and we've wasted a bunch of time! If it's already unlocked, then just install recovery.
Bootloader unlock allowed:yes...... So i take it,its not.
Can i use flashtool? I tried sony "official " way and i did NOT understand it. So ive read into flashtool and it seems easier.
If i get a recovery on this thing im good from there.
I dont understand the steps. On Samsung note devices its root, safestrap, SU then happy flashhing.
This device is crazy confusion

OK. Here is what you need to know and do.
1- you didn't need to upgrade. A towelroot variant would have worked.
2- you don't need to unlock bootloader.
3- you need to install, from a PC onto your phone, what's called Xzdualrecovery, which is essentially a recovery. Google it and download the latest installer for this phone. You need to enable USB debugging on the phone so it can be installed from the PC. When your start the installer there is an option to instal AND root. This tool comes with the variant of towelroot tha can properly root your phone, if your OS date is before June 7 2014.
If you need help with these steps message me.
Thank u najoor. I have only updated to 4.4.2. I tried towelroot. Didnt work. I have a c6802. So im completely stock and your saying theres a tool out there that can root and install recovery from a pc.
Flashtool? Could you provide a link?
