Performance gains with custom roms? - HTC Rezound

Hey all! I'm on stock 2.01.665 or whatever the latest VZW update is. I notice some lag on my Rezound when I'm rotating through my apps or sometimes dragging the app drawer down. I have a 3D/motion wallpaper installed so that might have something to do with it, but I was wondering if there's any performance gains at all by switching to a custom rom, say RezRom with Sense 4.0. I ask this because I'm under the impression ICS makes use of the phone's GPU better, but I wanted to make sure before I rooted and did everything along those lines. Also, would it be better to simply wait for the official ICS update at this point and THEN root?

I notice significant improvement in ICS "fluidity" of the UI vs. Gingerbread, to say nothing of the performance gains.
If I were you and you are indeed ready to take the plunge, I would start off with a good solid ICS sense 3.6 ROM like Bored's 3.6 ROM, Scott's CleanROM, or the stock rooted ROM as these ROMS are TRUE daily drivers that have most of the bugs worked out. Then from there you can move on and try out a flavour of sense 4.0
Note: if you don't run the RUU to get the ICS firmware, you will need a firmware patch (flashable in recovery) to run ICS roms on GB firmware

[Q] What would you say the most stable ics rom is??

I was wondering what you guys would say the most stable ics rom is??
Ive been using scotts senseless rom and its been ok just a few problems. before that i had his cleanrom but i just cant like sense that much something about it kinda turns me off..
what do you guys think?
ima add one more question to this thread.. Where i live my signal is finicky as it is but im thinking running ics has made my signal drop is this a problem or is it just me trippin out?

I'm running CleanROM 2.3 completely desensed and it's as stable as Gingerbread.
yeah i was thinking about going back to it to many system ui crashes and other lil bugs in the aosp roms is it updated to the 4.0.3 with sense 3.6?
&& how is it desensed?
I really didn't like the battery life on cleanrom 2.x or desensed. I switched to cleanrom 1.6.5 and getting nice battery life.
I found Nils business sense ICS to be the most stable. But the small pluses of ICS didn't make the cut compared to the battery life and ease of use of Gingerbread. Especially once the new wore off. Back to CleanROM 1.6.5 for me too!
All of the ics roms have the same root issues really- that being blue screen flicker, etc. I'm on nils currently cause I like his out of the box notification mods.
Ics rules but I think may go back to gb (until an official) for some issues that are irking me. Vid chat doesn't work on skype, gchat, etc. Can't crop pics or do certain effects in the gallery. Beats eq is not working correctly. Again, most of these are probs that follow all of the ics roms and the devs have done a fantastic job -but I may just end up going back until these talented folks get their hands on an official build. I think they've reached a point where there's not a whole lot left to do with this current build. But like I said, what they've managed to do with this early build is damned amazing.
i flashed back to clean rom and desensed removed everything and so far it seems alot more stables im not getting any word that things are crashing even when making calls like it did before not to shabby i say plus the gallery from the camera i was having that problem in senslessrom
You guys running ICS, can someone confirm whether the folders are the new ICS folders like the Gnex has.
do you mean the folders in the launcher? then yes if you have the stock ics launcher
I'm loving Business-ICS
The skins, overall stability is pretty awesome. The one huge issue is battery life. On stock, I had it to where I could get at average just under 2 days of battery with my extended (2750mah) battery. With this ROM, with almost nothing running, and leaving the screen low-use, and LTE turned off, etc, I still can't get more than 6 hours at BEST on a full charge! Is anyone else seeing this? Do I need to look at flashing to a ziggy kernel or something? Or is it just part of the leaked ICS that the devs have to work from?
I was getting 10 hours on my stock battery running senseless ics rom with a hour of navigation and pandora on pretty much the whole time (lte disabled) +texting+ facebook and what ever else and i was left with more than 25 %
I've been using Scott's senseless since it was launched its an awesome rom but alot of fc's figured I'd try tachi's senseless 4.0 (which is based off one if Scott's roms) with the USB fix and HTC mms fix and runs super stable best senseless ics I've tried so far. Sounds like there are some pretty good rooms on the way though. Feel free to try them all out and find what you like best though.

My personal favorites would have to be by NilsP, lllboredlll, and Scrosler. All are pretty stable roms.
I've been holding out on trying any roms, still on stock. Just the topic I need to follow here

I must echo that Tachi's 4.0 rom is pretty good (with the fixes). I can't wait until we get a fully working AOSP rom. Scott's are good as well (the CleanROM 2.3 is actually a bit better than the Senseless, but... has Sense).

I do get worse battery life on ICS (running cleanrom 2.2sp1), but not that bad, I still get 10-16 hours before swapping extended batteries.

Yes, I'm talking about the launcher. When I had the GNex and I created a folder, it showed the icons stacked on top of each other rather than the plain folder that GB has. So the stock ICS launcher on the Rezound shows the icons like the GNex does? I'm asking because I was worried that Sense would not have that feature.

sense doesnt offer this but you can get the aosp launcher pretty easy theres desense scripts that you can run for ics that will give you all this
I think I might help
do not get ics all are unstable and i bricked my phone doing this well my friends extra phone I had to wipe the phone completely clen and starting over. I am downloading all roms tring to find something that works again. but like all post ineffabilis is the only one that comes close to restoreing the phone. I will update later to see if I can restore a dead phone but leave ics only until offical update.

All of the ICS Roms are good. The ones I've used are CleanROM ICS, Nils Business ICS, RezROM ICS, Joelz new Sense Redefined. They're all amazing ROMs in their own respect. You want stock 4.0.1 with Sense 3.5, you'll want CleanROM ICS. You want that plus some theme work, you'll want Nils or RezROM ICS. You want 4.0.3 with some Sense 4.0, you'll want Joelz ROM. They're all good. I haven't tried anything else but these, but they're amazing ROMs with the stock camera effects that you're looking for.

I haven't heard of an ICS Rom yet that has camera effects working. Not sure we will until we have a new beta build to play with...
Some of the effects work. Grey scale, negative and some others. I couldn't get the digitizer to work and some other effects.
I have found that you can apply the affects from the gallery with no problem. I don't think the problem will be fixed until we have an official update.

Opinions on the ICS ROMs?

Just curious what people think of the latest ROMs, what the fastest, smoothest, best looking are, etc...
Been using Scott's CleanROM ICS a lot and really like it, but was thinking to myself, that most of them seem to credit the same devs for various contributions and things... so in the end, are they all pretty much the same?
I know that if you ask a Dev they will say how theirs is different, but I would love to hear from end users who have used them all extensively, which ones they prefer and why.
I think that they are all great, but perhaps some are better in certain areas than others, and so a conversation that lays all that out might be beneficial to people who want to just to an ICS ROM, but don't know what one is right for them, and the "trial and error" process might be more than they are able to willing to tackle.
For reference, CM7 that I had on the DX is my all time favorite ROM, and it is the benchmark for me, so any ROM I go to, is to try and get as close to that experience as possible.
Thoughts?
Check out BAMF 1.1 ICS....
I've tried the others and this one has been the most stable, the most current version has great battery life as well.

Bamf is good. I also like Nils Business and Rezrom . Try them all out to see what you like.
Which one has the nicest eye candy, themes, etc?
They all seem fast and smooth, so I am sorta looking for the best UI.

Ok, cool, I will check that one out as well. Just ran a Nandroid backup so I guess I am ready to experiment. All of these latest versions are based off of the latest RUU, so I should not have to mess with that, or kernels for that matter, correct? Just the ROM itself, and if I don't like it, a simple Nandroid restore?
Of course I have to wipe data and cache before each install, but other than that, nothing else to do?

Nope. They all use the same kernel I think because kernel source isn't out. Just nandroid.

I'm running RezROM and loving it. One of the best things about the Rezound is the list of developers. Whether it's Bored, Nils, or Scott, their ROMS are rock solid and well-supported. Other devs are excellent, too, but these 3 are the ones I look to first.
ive been running Rezrom 3.1 on old firmware with the patch and it seems very nice. only small issue ive has was it seems like ringtones want to go off the media volume and not the ringtone volume setting but i think that is being worked on for the next version.
my only concern on the current wave of roms would be whether it could run on old firmware or not.

I would assume that patching the new ROMs to run on the old firmware will be phased out. It will probably be around for a little while to make it easy for those who may want to go back to GB. Since the new ICS ROMs are pretty much rock solid the only real reason anyone would want to do that is for returning their phone though. Once the official OTA comes I'm sure noone will be making the patches any more. I could be wrong though.
I kinda hope they keep making patches personally, I for one, have had no rush to get the leaked firmware, unless a ROM blows me off my feet that requires it, none have yet.
I've got a feeling that once the AOSP ROMs are working properly they will probably be built around the new firmware. The battery life improvement was worth the 20 minutes or so to do the flash for me. I assume with the patch to run the old firmware with the new ROMs the data arrows are working? Kind of a small thing, but sure is nice to have them back. LOL
Cleanrom DE is pretty nice, has an aosp feel but still has some sense parts, seems pretty smooth but I can never get any of the ics launchers as smooth as sense was
They are all great!!!
Personally I don't like running non official firmware. When HTC releases the official firmware we are probably going to have to go through the entire process again anyways. Also if HTC doesnt deem it fit for official release then i am not using it unless I am having a major issue that needs to be fixed. I wonder if the New firmware would fix my ics performance issues though
I am running ICS now as a daily driver on the old firmware. It is still a tad slower than gb performance wise for me. I have gone back and forth a couple times. I can see why people would want to stay on old firmware or gb til official ics is release. Hopefully ics performs a little better when it becomes official.

I used to love Sense, but as time has gone on I've grown kind of sick of it, plus it takes a heavy toll on the battery and resources. So now I've been looking for something closer to AOSP. The first ROM I used was Xtreme Outcast's ROM. It was slightly themed and close to AOSP. He hasn't updated in a while so I've tried scrosler's CleanROM DE, because he's on the newest leak, and so far I really like it. It's got some Sense elements, which I still have mixed feelings on, but it's really smooth, and has improved my battery life loads.
I am still using the original ICS leak based off 4.0.1. I have put so much time into it, and have it running so nearly perfectly that I am hesitant to even bother with the more recent leaks and will probably just hold off until official ICS is out or until AOSP RIL is working.

Atrix ICS upgrade technical questions

I have spent countless hours setting up my Atrix and am a little nervous about the upgrade to ICS. Here are my concerns:
1. As far as speed and resources will the phone's performance be better or worse with ICS?
2. I realize that once updated with OTA there is no going back. Right now I am only rooted and can hide the root when ICS OTA arrives if necessary. I understand that you must unlock the bootloader to do a nandroid backup? and once that is done it is irreversible and then you cannot do the OTA update? I do not want to use any other ROMs. So you cannot do a nandroid (or full rom) backup and still get the ICS OTA upgrade...is that correct? Likewise is it correct that if for some reason I do not like te ICS upgrade there is no way to go back to gingerbread?
My Atrix preforms reasonably well. So I have good reason to back it up and also have reason to want the ICS upgrade. I use Launcher Pro and i assume I will have to find another launcher (one that lets me up the resolution) and then reset up all the circlelauncher icons and widgets since Launcher Pro does not work with ICS.
Any info and comments appreciated!
thanks
We wont know for sure about its performance until it's out, but in theory it should be faster. One of ICS's under-the-hood features is system wide GPU hardware acceleration which should result in a huge increase in UI smoothness (think scrolling in lists or zooming in the browser). If CM9 on the Atrix is any indication, it should still be plenty fast.
As far as nandroid backups, yes, you need to unlock your bootloader. And once you do, it's unwise to run an OTA because you run the risk of a hard brick. You can still get updates though, in the form of fruitcakes. Fruitcakes are clockworkmod flashable versions of official OTAs and are availible in the dev section, it shouldnt take long after the OTA is out for a fruitcake to be made from it.
For ICS launchers, check out Apex and Nova. Both are pretty good.

You won't want to go back to gingerbread after trying ICS, believe me. Apex launcher is a good one for ICS. Others like Xperia launcher.

Very interesting guys. I am seriously looking at the Galaxy S3 with its 2 gigs of ram and big screen. Not sure what to do but i may wait to see what ICS does for the Atrix and I never buy anything without holding it first . Anyway thanks for this info. I'll check out those launchers too.
By the way as far as other phones, I am just looking. The Atrix really serves me well.

yeah, in my opinion the Atrix 4g still holds it's own very well!
Launcher Pro with ICS
That's interesting that Launcher Pro works with ICS especially since it hasn't been updated in a very long time. Hopefully, the resizing (resolution) function also works?? I run my screens at 6 x 6 icons so the launcher's ability to adjust the resolution within ICS is my primary concern. Hopefully ICS upgrade will be upon us very soon.
Hi, While I'm new to flashing ROM's and modding my Atrix. I decided to flash an ICS rom. AOKPCB (Minus the CB theming I love it.). I'm not sure Motoblurified ICS is worth much.
Best bet: Root, Unlock & Flash an ICS rom (after heavy research).
Hope this helps!
This ICS rom so far has outperformed anything I've used prior.....keeping in mind I believe it is still in beta.

[Q] Questions about ChubbzGruesone 6th Sense ROM

I am running MeanROM ICS. I have hboot 1.58 with S-off using the wire trick, latest firmware. Using 4ext Recovery. I am looking to try an ICS RIM that uses Sense 4.1. Is there any reason I cannot flash ChubbsGruesome 6th Sense ROM? Also, has anyone hacked WiFI Hotspot yet? Thanks in advance.

1. No.
2. No, at least if you mean the Sprint version. According to mikeyxda, Sprint patched it to make that a lot harder and it's not worth risking using it without paying for it.
ramjet73
The main things that attracted me to this ROM were Sense 4.1 and the Bravia engine. Forgive my noobiness, but is the Bravia Engine something I have to turn on?
Also, I get the browser just....closing on me. No dialog box, it just goes away, or sometimes back to the previous screen.
I flashed the camera mod, but when I take pics, they are not full screen, either in the preview or in the gallery. Pics I already had on my SD card are and always have been. Anyone else noticed this?
I have tried several ICS ROMs, I know they are almost all under construction. Still, I actually dug my last Gingerbread ROM(Cleanrom Reborn 1.1) way better than any ICS ROM I have tried. I am hoping it is just a matter of patience and experimentation, or should I start looking for a way to downgrade my bootloader/firmware while staying S-off?
Also, how in the heck can I get recently used apps to appear in the pulldown?
I dunno, if anyone can suggest a good ICS ROM that works with the latest hboot and firmware will work for a guy who mainly uses his phone for surfing/games/media....Or at least tell me what I am doing wrong with this one. It looks gorgeous, and the differences between using ICS with Sense 3.6 and Sense 4.1 are definitely cool, but I feel like every ICS ROM I have tried leaves me cold on surfing/gaming(part of which is a known issue with Gameloft games).....
Thanks again......
Have you tried Vipdr3d? It's sense 4.1. It's a pretty good Rom. No 3d or 4g of course.
