Will there be unlocked unbranded S4 gs3's? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am intrigued by the gs3. Not really interested in the exynos version but i keep kicking myself in the ass for even thinking about getting a locked down phone. Really interested in seeing android run on 2gb ram and at the same time google needs to let us tweak memory management a little bit more ootb since the newer phones arent multitasking as well as older brethren. Anybody with knowledge on if there is an unlocked s4 version and where to get one? I haven't received replies from resellers yet.

GS3 LTE version (US) I need your help!

Hi! I'd like US owners (Also Canadian and Japanese) of the LTE version of the GS3 to run some tests for me. So I'm still trying to decide if I should go for the US version or for the int version, so can you please try PSX and N64 emulators for me and tell me if they are running fine like on those video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa9d2cK6Ybs (1:40 for the N64 emulator) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAQkRNx4t_4
The GPU is really my main worry on the US version since CPU are almost equal.
Thanks!
That's going to be pretty hard to do, seeing as how their not being released until next week, June 21st.
Sent from my Atrix
My bad I though the device was already released with some carriers, can we know if the GPU will have the same perfs or will a GPU be far behind the other?
I only read one comparison on GPU specs and they were claiming the US version was better. But I guess you cant rely on that till we can really compare the 2 side by side in the real world.

Yes and they were comparing the old GPU (the one from the GS2 with lowers clocks etc...)
But the thing is that nobody really knows what GPU will be in the US version...1 guy speculated what they thought was on there so you can barely find the assumed 225 mentioned because nobody has a clue. Again until you see a real US version in the wild, its all guessing. Dont worry either way you will still have the best phone available right now. Then near the end of the year that will change, its ok and how it goes.

[Q] Lagging/Performance issues - International version better for me?

Hi everyone.
As you can see, very new to these forums but looks to be a friendly community and I look forward to settling in.
Any who, onto why I made this thread. I received my Galaxy S3 last Friday from AT&T, I paid $573 for no commitment because I'm canceling service with them and using Straight Talk. It started off all good, booted up the phone and had no problems with set up.
However, this soon changed after I got over the initial joy of having a new phone and started to look at it more closely. The home screens stutter when sliding them across, and the app drawer is really not a whole lot better. I'm not talking like freezing lag, but definitely not something you'd want to see on a sub $600 phone...
I ran a few benchmarks and my fears were confirmed.
Antutu: Highest - 5543 on a fresh wipe, 4900 on average. My girlfriend gets 6300 on her SGS2 Looks like the SGS3 should be around 8-10k.
Quadrant Standard - 3273 on mine with a fresh wipe, girlfriend getting 3900 on her S2. Looks like it should be getting about 5000 on average.
So obviously something is wrong with my phone, as even temple run stutters every now and then. I blame bloatware, and AT&T, may not be AT&Ts fault but I hate them. If it matters my CPU seems to be the only thing that isn't scoring as it should, usually it says it is clocked around .9-1.1GHZ, no where near the 1.5 it should. I've tried factory resetting, wiping the cache, soft resetting, and trying to use no sim card at all to see if it made a difference.
Anyway, I'm sorry if you're still reading this, but I'm frustrated, so I'll just ask my questions..
Should I return it, or is there someway I can fix this besides what I've tried?
Is the international version better suited for me because I won't even be using LTE on Straight Talk?
Would the international version have firmware updates a lot quicker than the AT&T version?
Thanks everyone!
TL;DR - I think my AT&T SGS3 is a lemon, and wont be using LTE anyway, should I return it and buy a international version for the updates and quad core?
Sounds like your device has some issues. You should be having a very smooth experience. I would return it for another LTE version, and wouldn't worry about the International version. The S4 dual core is a beast. The extra gb of ram makes the choice for me a no brainer. To each his own though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
that sounds off- the phone performs good will mostly get over 5000 each time on quadrant- did u check to see if your phone setting may have the power performance cap on? this caps cpu at 1ghz to help conserve battery. if not your phone may be defective.
Thanks for the replies, and no power saving mode is off.
I called AT&T today earlier and they just acted like I was stupid, even though they had no idea what they were talking about.
I guess I'll have to return then, just don't know whether to go for a refund or a replacement..
I'm kinda feel the same way as the op. After a few days in I thought this phone should scream along the screens and I'm getting a lot of stutter. I've used apex and nova launchers and they both display the same stuttering. Somehow I feel cheated that I want to trade for and international version even though giving up on ram, and no LTE. I'm hoping Jelly Bean can bring about butter smoothness as its been of the features of JB. But when will we actually play with JB on our phones, not for some time and even longer without sources. I would love to play with the international just to see which one I like better
I think the international version is a tad faster, and it's definitely faster wwith getting updates which is the main reason I am considering it.
Coming from exynos based sgs2 I'm also pretty disappointed with user interface lag and stutter. Even with nova launcher, it doesn't help. I turned off animations and transitions just so that I'll see less of the lag. Would I get the international version (assuming I had enough money)? No, because I'm utterly blown away by LTE speeds and browser/chrome is running beautifully, and that's more important for me.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk 2
I have had the AT&T (Qualcomm) version for a week now, and have not detected a single instance of lag or stutter. Smooth as "butter". Could be some ill-behaving apps causing your issues... for instance, I know that the official Facebook app is especially bad. I dumped it in favor of something called "Friendcaster" on my old Captivate, and lag pretty much went away.
I have the white AT&T SGS3 and I can honestly say this phone is "butter" smooth.
international has a lot more root and dev support but as for your phone's performance, it looks like they shipped you a defect. i can get 4700 on quadrant with facebook and browser in background. the rest depends on you. if you are a heavy phone user, you should get another lte version as you likely got a defective phone. that or you could root and install the latest redrum rom as its removes bloat if that's your problem. i still beleive you should get the at&t lte as the american version should be still crazy fast so its hardware or bloatware that's troubling you. quad cores isnt that necessary as of right now. hope i helped
Try a Factory reset and see if that helps.
Old galaxy s II using Exynos processor with Mali 400.
Which is faster and optimized then Snapdragon (Adreno 225) in your galaxy s III.
The benchmarking results telling you the trues.
Lets test it:
Click your browser open youtube and play in "desktop mod" FULL 1080p high definition video. (Adreno 225 can't handle this)
This phone is not able to do that.
Now take your girlfriend galaxy s II phone and do samething....
Phone will play full 1080p video in desktop mod so smooth.
Conclusion:
Go get Galaxy s II (with Exynos mali 400) or buy "God like" Galaxy s III international version. Which is currently the world's fastest phone.
Best regards.
Old guy
Thanks everyone. You've all been really helpful.
Since I'm not even going to be using the LTE network anyway with straight talk, I decided to return my LTE phone to AT&T and I bought an international unlocked one from eBay. I'm pretty excited to get it and see the difference in speed, especially since I had a defective unit...
Again, thanks for your opinions and suggestions, you helped me come to a decision.
It could've been that you were on power saver mode

I have the Internation Version as im in the UK and I also notice lag but i think this is just the Android OS itself. Jelly Bean will fix that assuming that it somes out for the SG3. Gaming however had been a little dissapointing, Riptide runs blisteringly fast but still Drops framerate especially when all of the jets are on screen at the same time. I am new to Android but seriously didnt expect this on a quad core phone! im hoping it has something to do with poor optimisation. Nova 3 isnt too great either, I reckon its running between 30- 50 FPS is it just my device? or does any GS3 Int version run at 60 FPS. perhaps i have expected to much from arguably the worlds fastest phone? Modern Comabt 3 runs quite well very smooth, looks like its running at 60fps.

Looking at upgrades - SGN or SGS3

I have been looking at upgrades to my SGS2, and I am a bit torn between the two phones - Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Samsung Galaxy S III (AT&T).
Looking at the stats, there is very little difference, and the Nexus is about half the price for an unlocked one straight from Google.
Battery life should be close, but the specs all show a much lower number then I would expect, so I am guessing that it is from the quad core version, and not the US version.
Has anyone done a comparison? I have been looking and always end up with the Quad core version rather then the Dual core one for the US.
The Nexus isn't an upgrade from the S2, it's a sidegrade at best (and possibly even a downgrade depending on what's important to you in a smart phone).
I've been having the same trouble . It just seems like the SGS3 is a better choice. Also the SGN isn't LTE and the SGS3 is.
According to your question it's undoubtedly the Samsung galaxy S3
but on the other hand if you are a pure android fan and want fast updates from google then it's definitely the Galaxy Nexus...
I would say that the SGS3 would be the better one unless you want pure Android.
i would say wait for the next nexus phone with lte capabilities..that's gonna be my next smartphone maybe, want pure android not pure bloatware from carriers and delayed updates

Jelly Bean makes it feel like a whole new phone, I am probably going to order mine next Week.

As much as you would hate this... I'll say waite.
There is nothing wrong with the SGSII. Its freaking awesome, and for me, it's even better than the G Nexus.
As for the SGS3, Android as for now, is in no need of 4 cores, specially samsung ones that are a brand new technology that is still in developement. Even Tegra 3 are equaled in performance by S4 dual core chips, while consuming less power. (as seen on One X series)
I bet around fall we will see a new and decent Nexus device, that i say its worth the waite.

The only thing I want from the SGSIII is that screen.

IMO, the only reason to pick a Galaxy Nexus over any other phone is because you want quicker updates. It has nothing else over any other device, imo.
I too am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have 1 line available for an upgrade now and another on Aug. 1st. Problem is my SGS2s work perfectly and even though the S3 has some nice features (zero shutter lag for one). It does not feel like enough of an upgrade harware wise. The GNexus is pretty much on par with the S2 except a slightly larger screen size and NO removable sdcard. So I decided to just wait. But my daughters handed down SGS1 Cappy sdcard just failed a few days ago. She was runing it with CM7 still and liked it. So since I am STUCK with having to get a new phone my dilema is this. Get the SGS3 and hand down my SGS2? Get the Gnex from the play store which I like the updates available but give it to her, then I STILL have 1 phone available for upgrade and another soon so IF something better comes along I can jump on it. OR third choice get a SGS2 I777 for her and waste one upgrade. Decisions decisions...

That middle option sounds good to me. It'd be nice to have an upgrade available late in the year or early 2013 when new phones start coming out...
Wait for the Next Nexus that will hopefully come out in the fall/winter season.

That's what I'm edging towards with my upgrade. I was considering selling my SGSII and buying the GNex in order to have the upgrade available for the next batch of phones (Krait Quads) or just wait until then with my SGSII although I would be able to sell if for much less at that time.
SGSII is such a great phone but seeing the SGSIII, that screen is just making me so tempted to upgrade. I'm a sucker for bigger screens with better res. Someone smack the temptation out of me!

Well I know that the idea of getting updates quicker is what is would seem, but in reality, that is not the case. The Nexus models may be a Google phone, but they still have to go through the carrier to get updates.
I think that although a new phone may be nice, many of you are right that the S2 is an amazing phone, and should be good for a while. As far as the comment about no need for Quad cores, I thought the same thing when I got my Eris, and thought it was lighting fast... until the new apps came out and then the phone ran like a slug, even rooted and modded.
The software will push the hardware limits at all times, so if new hardware comes out, software will start to use it, which means that eventually the old ones just don't work right. This is the bane of technology. I also have an iPad, and as of later this year I am out of luck and will not get any software updates before iOS 6 won't install on it. (But that is whole different conversation)
Looking at the specs between the two on phone arena is actually funny, since they are both SO close. I have worked in computers for long enough that I know that a .2 or .3 different in CPU speed, isn't going to make or break a difference. Memory, Cores, and Storage tend to make the biggest difference.

Why do you suppose this phone doesn't have much support and development?

Let me first start off by saying thank you to all the devs that continue to develop on this device. You're time and efforts do not go unappreciated. But alas, it seems this phone was a real flop, and I don't get why. Compared to every other device I've owned, this one, by far has the least options, in terms of mods, ROMs, and kernels, especially the AT&T variant. Am I wrong? Or, if you agree, why do you suppose that is? Does it have to do with the release date, the lack of s-off? As far as I'm concerned, this is a great device, the only thing it lacks is aokp/cyanogenmod support. It's fast, the screen is great, battery life is good. What's the deal?
Personally I think it's a combination of the lack of s-off and the pricetag.
The price would be a lot less of an issue if it was s-off though. At any rate with other really nice phones on the market for the same money or less with comparable hardware(more or less) and s-off it's not a big shock that the devs gravitate towards those instead.
At any rate, like you, I'm just grateful for the devs we do have on board.
it as absolutely nothing to do with s-on vs. s-off
as far as the att version is concerned the problem is only htc
deleivering AOSP incompatible drivers
This phone also don't provide any "daily use" noticeable enhancement over other phones... Eg. the OneX...
The int. version even don't have LTE as other new phones have (eg. the much cheaper Xperia V, that was released at the same time, and also have a far better camera)...
So there is a number of reasons...
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda premium
i honestly believe its down to the number of units sold, more phones out there means more people using them. That in turn means more people developing for it. When you think about it the original HOX was sold by most networks for a considerably long amount of time whereas the plus was only sold by a couple of networks in the UK anyway and for a much shorter amount of time. There was alot of competition while the HOX+ was around in the UK too which doesn't help with numbers. Looking around here I think its clear more of the LTE versions where sold which limits development down again. In short the cards where stacked against this great phone which is really a shame :crying:
I will say however no matter which phone I own I mostly only play around with a couple of stock based roms and a couple of CM & AOKP based ones. Now luckly for me we have 2 of each which are really worth trying so i'm happy for the most part :victory:
Oh and coming from the xperia z I can tell you you are not missing much
I would +1 for the number of units sold. This phone is pretty brand new in the market here in UAE = 4 months .. by that time S3 was ruling the market and market which had a bad impression about OneX did not think twice about what OneX+ can do.
Its definitely better than s3 in all the ways for me. 64 Gigs and 2100 mAh, what else do we need ?

It seems HAM2 has upadted to 4.4.2 on Hungary on this video?

In china HAM2 is on 4.4.2, and on thise video too, but don't really know if this is Hungary?
Only question is when will they update on USA.

That's the MT2-L05, that phone uses the Huawei built Hisilicon CPU... even though the phone looks the same it's really entirely different than the USA MT2-L03 which uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400.
I hate to say it but I'd be surprised if we ever got an official update to Kitkat (4.4.x) for the MT2-L03. Huawei have focused all of their effort into promoting their new Ascend Mate 7 and seem to care very little about providing software updates for their previous handsets.
I sure hope I am proven wrong, and soon... I'd love nothing more than to see Kitkat on our phone.

I'd rather see CM11 or CM12 (if that's what it will be called)!
It's a long shot, yes.
I'm not trying to be a troll, but just don't understand this "desire" to have kk on the Mate2. I upgraded to a mate2 about 2 months ago, from an almost 3 year old (international) Note1. Some app updates were having issues with the 4.1.2 that my note was on. Samsung never officially
updated my device past 4.1.2, and quite frankly, all the other roms you "could" update it to, and a glitch here, hiccup there. Bluetooth, video, audio there was always some sort of glitch, so I stuck with 4.1.2, which, for my use, was rock stable.
The mate2 isn't a "top of the line spec" device. It doesn't intend to be. I know this going in. The 720p screen, coupled with the Snapdragon 400 CPU, along with 4.3JB for me, is flat out SOLID. Battery life is excellent too. If they were to update to kk, you know good and well, it will most likely take a patch or two, to iron out any glitches. I for one, don't like to deal with glitches. My smartphone is my life from 8-5. All my work related activities require the use of email, web & phone. I don't have time to wait for a reboot, due to a bug/freeze. I'm quite happy with the older software, because it works. Hey, bless the bleeding edge people who do run those cutting edge things, because the trickle down helps us all, but, I for one don't really see any "need" for kk on my mate2. Does kk really bring anything exciting to the table, that would make the mate a better device?
I don't really think so, but I could be wrong.

Then I have to ask.... why are you here, exactly?
XDA is, in general, driven by the desire to upgrade, experiment with, and tweak Android hardware.
You're happy with your phone, I get that... and that's fantastic. I'm pretty happy with my HAM2 as well, but that doesn't stop me wanting more.
KitKat was a great improvement for Android. It did have better battery life and RAM management. My old phone had 256 MB of RAM. A developer increased it to ~300 with a CM11 ROM and it was nice.

I dunno about anyone else but for me, Tasker opens up a few extras by going to KK versus JB. Namely AutoRemote. There are more variables.
I need KK bad cause I want to take advantage of these variables.
Battery life as well...
