HDMI MHL Cable? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys I purchased this mhl cable
http://www.ebay.it/itm/160781902835...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648#ht_3437wt_1165
Dosen't work
the tv did not see anything
I plugged the charger on adapter HDMI, but the phone ONLY charging...
Why?

Designed for GS2, thus will not work with GS3.
Pretty obvious given the listing title.
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda premium

For some reason or another, the S3 has a different cable requirement to the S2 and pretty much all previous phones. This means that cables designed for other phones (like the one you bought, which was designed for the S2) won't work.
There will be third party MHL cables for the S3 out soon enough I'm sure.

I read in some review that it uses MHL ver 2.0
I think that's why it doesn't work with older SGS2 cables.

It says in the title of that advert that that cable is for the S2. NOT the S3.

NO.
Atrix has two different output ports. Micro USB for charging and data transfer, and micro-HDMI for TV-out. The laptop dock specific (I stress specific) for the Atrix uses BOTH of these ports in conjuction.
Galaxy S2 has ONE output port, a micro USB port that doubles for charging/data transfer, and connection to the optional MHL adapter accessory.
In NO WAY would you be able to MacGyver the Galaxy S2 to use the Atrix laptop dock.

You know... it just might work. The atrix lapdock does feed 5v power up the usb port which you could adapt from micro usb to whichever varient you need on your MHL cable. This would provide the power necessary to drive the hdmi circuitry that you had feeding into the micro hdmi input of the lapdock. Obviously you wouldnt have a true 'dock' but it sounds like you understand that. As long as your phone detected the mouse and keyboard as input devices it should work. Not sure how that operates with an MHL cable. It might require USB OTG, and im not sure if that is available over the USB connectivity provided by MHL. You could try with a standard usb keyboard If that works, then the lapdocks should too.
I know for certain that you can use the lapdock as the screen by just connecting the video out of the MHL adapter to the lapdock, and a usb power only cable (for the MHL adapter) to the lapdocks normal USB charge ports.
There is a thread called Lapdock HDMI that has more details!

That thread is from the Atrix forum. What bearing does that have on the argument on getting this working on an S2??
Have you even looked at the connections involved here?
The Atrix's micro USB and micro HDMI port are side by side, and the dock plugs into both of them.
The MHL cable plugs into the ONLY port on the S2.
So I'm certainly not an expert on the inner workings of MHL, USB, and HDMI, but from what I can gather, you would have to splice an MHL cable to separate out the USB leads from the HDMI leads, then try to run the HDMI leads into a micro HDMI female port, and run the USB leads to a female micro USB port. I don't even know if that would work with MHL in the equation. I'm fairly certain the phone detects what is plugged in and decides how to use the port, which shoots this down idea down altogether... unless more hacking is involved into the OS. Which is way above my head, and I'm not fool enough to try.
See this thread, which is admittedly for the Galaxy Nexus, but is WAY more relevant than the Atrix thread you linked, as the GNex is also manufactured by Samsung, and also uses MHL technology.

No - the micro USB port on the side of the MHL adapter is for power. If the HDMI port you plug into is NOT MHL compliant (and not many are, yet), you need to plug an AC adapter in to power the phone while HDMI is in use.

well. theres allot of different mhl cables. even if none of them support it. splitting the usb data from the other cables on the mhl should be easy. but like i said il order one to play with. im pretty sure even if i cant do anything with the sg2 il find another use for it. would be great for a project. but many thanks for your input. sure has shed some light in the dark.

Sure, there are a lot of MHL cables, but they are all essentially third party versions of the OEM Samsung MHL cable. (or whatever phone manufacturer you have that uses MHL - HTC, whatever)
I have high doubts ANY MHL cable will support it, since as I said, the phone will detect what type of connection is attached to decide how to send/receive signals from the port - if it sees the MHL adapter, it will do charge/HDMI; if it sees a regular USB cable, it will do charge/data transfer/OTG; if it sees an AC adapter, it does strictly charging. Notice how it can tell the difference when you have it plugged into your computer as opposed to when you have it plugged into the wall?
But if you want to go for it, good luck.
EDIT: yet another piece of info shooting this idea down.
Here's the video that he talks about in that post. Info specific on why this DOESN'T work is at about 7:25.

i pretty much thought the usb and hdmi wouldnt work from the beginning, il have to look into modding the dock to allow bluetooth. ive have just looked at the specifications of a mhl even though they can in theory support usb and hdmi at the same time. the sg2 wont. and i cant see any software mod that would allow this. il see what sort of bluetooth mods are available. maybe incorporate stuff i have done in the past. but the dock is too good to pass by.
i think we can close this thread as its been answered.

Not to nitpick, but it's MHL 1.0 that won't support it. The GS2 just uses MHL. Who knows if there's a possibility to update it to whatever MHL 2.0 is, whenever it comes out.

[Q] Microusb Pinout on S3

Can anyone confirm is the pinout of the Galaxy S3 Microusb is the same as the S2.
I would like to make a cable using a 365k resistor to trigger Car Mode, Charge the phone and send Audio out on D- & D+. I know this worked on the S2, I am assuming it will for the S3 as well, but wanted confirmation.
Thanks!
(Heres the S2 cable link I am refering to

Not sure about this but I read that the S2 Micro-USB Jig doesn't work with the S3 so this to me would imply something changed and so pinouts 'may' differ.
Hopefully someone else knows the answer for you.

I dunno who told you hhis, but the same jig works across all Samsung Galaxy devices including the S3.
Some manufacturers use ****ty lowcost resistors with a high tolerance factor to which the s3 simply doesnt react but my homemade 301kOhm 1%tolerance jig works bust fine.
Btw one of the pins for the jig to work -the pin 5 - is never used in data cables.
The pinout is the same as alway and is a standarized MicroUsb-B female plug.
Only the MHL (hdmi) link which is also included in the same plug had it's pinout changed from S2

Are you running a stock ROM? If you're running CM that's where your problem will be, CM doesn't have HDMI support on any device.
If you're running stock and a generic MHL to HDMI adapter doesn't work then Sony may have a proprietary adapter that you have to use like with Samsung devices.
Please post a link to the one you bought.

Is this chip in our phone?

Apparently, Samsung is going to block third-party accessories.... The chip may be in our phone
http://www.maximumpc.com/samsung_may_opt_block_third_party_accessories_galaxy_devices2013
It's not just lower cost that third party products provide, it's features that Samsung are unable or unwilling to provide. Their MHL 2.0 adapter, which they fraudulently advertise as being for use with your 'Home Theater' in fact explicitly prevents you connecting to anything other than a TV directly, so if you want to run through your receiver and get output from your speakers you're out of luck. The only hope now is a third party adapter that works properly (or go back to the old MHL 1.0 adapter and 24Hz frame rates).

We should be asking you that question.
(1) Does it work if you plug it into something other than a monitor or HDTV (i.e. the HDMI or MHL port of an AV receiver?)
(2) What frame rate are you seeing. MHL 1.0 gives 1080p/24 while MHL 2.0 gives 1080p/60. The specification for the Kanex of 75MHz doesn't seem fast enough to support 60Hz at 1080p
(3) When you plug in external power while watching TV does the phone charge and if so at what current (Use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free&hl=en to find out).
I assume you're talking about one of these ...
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1001326-REG/kanex_s3hdtv_mhl_2_0_to_hdtv.html
In a perfect world it would work the way it's supposed to. Plug a single micro-usb to HDMI MHL cable into the phone and the other end into the MHL port of a receiver, and the video/audio goes through the receiver while the phone charges from the MHL port, no external adapter required.
It's beyond me how we've been promised this for years but no-one seems to be able to make a cable that can do it.

MHL cable that will also charge?

Is there an MHL cable or converter out there that will also provide power to the Note 3? I've searched a bit on amazon and there are hundreds to choose from. Most of them don't indicate whether or not they do or don't.
I picked this one up. Its only a little more than a trickle charge though. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DZJSAVY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I don't often recommend official accessories, given how overpriced they tend to be, but for MHL I do think you're better off with the Samsung MHL adapter which does a full 2A charge when connected to a Samsung charger. You'll pay more, but you'll sidestep all the BS sellers selling subpar gear.
If you were talking about the MHL cable/adapter itself charging the phone without an external charging input, then the only way you can get that is if you are connecting to a TV that supports the MHL standard (relatively unlikely still).

Also I do have a new onkyo receiver that has an mhl USB port. With this could I then bypass the extra charging cable?

I picked this one up. Its only a little more than a trickle charge though. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DZJSAVY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks I just picked one up from Amazon.
There is a thread out where someone mentions one on ebay for $11. It's more of an all-in-one solution. It's called HDMI connection kit. Of the person's suggestion I bought it and it works. It is hdmi, usb, & has an SD card slot. I just happened to be looking for the thread again when I ran into your post. Will post when I find it.

There are a couple of threads that mention this, one of them is mine. That accessory puts a fairly minimal charge into the phone, it will gradually discharge when connected to that even despite the charging input.
Haven't used it alot yet but it only works with the cable it came with when using the galaxy mega... I'll look into it on my note 3.
