[SOLVED] Siyah Kernel phone bricked - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Calm down your phone isnt bricked !!
I started this thread because many people have paniced that their phone is bricked after using siyah kernel v2.3.8 but actually it isnt...
I have a few steps which fixed mine:
1. Pull out the battery pop it back in.
2. Go into download mode(hold power + home + volume down) it should take sometime til it loads.
3. Flash a stock rom(I flashed XWLP7) and also siyah kernel v3.3.1.
IF U DONT NEED BACKUP SKIP TO STEP 5 :
4. Now boot and do a back up of your data using titanium backup.
5. Now boot into recovery and wipe user data(everything) your SD data wont be effected.
WARNING : this is a dangerous step but I feel its better to do it to make sure everything is fine.
7. Flash ICS bootloader from here.
6. Congrats your phone is fixed !!
If you need anymore help just post it here .

Do you mean 3.2.8? Because I've flashed that no less than twenty times and my phone hasn't bricked. Generally speaking if you can get into download mode (or recovery mode) then you aren't really bricked.
But thanks for posting anyway because I'm sure this will help someone.

Thanks for the info so people dont get confused about what bricked actually means.

yes its a kind of bootloop but you can only boot into download mode which is considered 'r/w corruption' something like that which I dont really understand but I read that in the source thread .

No problem.
You still have "2.3.8" written at the top though. You might want to change that so people don't get confused. I might upgrade to the latest Siyah as I seem to be having a lot of WEIRD problems that nobody should have...

Help Please! Phone won't turn on

First off, my apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Mods, you may move this thread if need be. I was just shown this website about two weeks ago by a friend and have only been a lurker since. So I apologize if my first post is one needing assistance.
First off, I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to doing all this reboot, recovery, root, etc. But I can usually figure stuff out. I have researched how to do all this stuff over the last to weeks learning how to do all this. Let it be known that I was already rooted with siyah 3.4.2? kernel with superuser, CWM, and had ROM Manager downloaded. Last night I had finally decided to try and download a custom rom (AOKP), and I went through ROM Manager to try and reboot into recovery mode..the phone went dead. I have not been able to turn the phone on since last night. I have tried taking the battery out, trying to hold down volume buttons/power button to get into download mode, etc..But nothing is happening. When I power on, I can see the screen where it says "Samsung Galaxy SII" w/ the triangle, but then the screen goes black and nothing. In a dark room, you can see that the screen looks like it's trying to fire by flickering, but again...nothing. Sorry if this has been alot of reading, but I just want to be as thorough as I can. If anybody can tell me what went wrong, and how it might be fixed, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Remove the battery and replace it. hold the up/down volume and power button. The screen should light up. Continue to hold them until the phone goes into recovery mode. The phone should turn on and off a couple times before it enters recovery. Then wipe the data and caches. Hopefully at the point the phone will work. If it wont work you could always try to buy a download jig. They are only a couple dollars and can easily be found with a search.

That usually cause more trouble than it's worth. Espeically for a noob. I had been in that situation back when I first start doing it. First thing I used was CWM and I had the same/similar problem.
That is why everyone here always mentioned to not use CWM.

@BigCohiba,
You need to get into download mode. You should be able to do that without using a jig. With the phone off, but with the battery still in the phone, hold down vol- and vol+ (but not power) while you plug in the usb cable.
The following instructions given by fakhri should also work:

After that, flashing siyah kernel alone may be enough to allow the phone to boot, but you may have trouble finding a Siyah in Odin flashable tar format.
...or, flash straight stock UCKH7, or flash stock plus root UCKH7. You can find download links for those in one or the other of the guides linked in my signature.
Please let us know your success or problems as you proceed.

That's your call, of course. I'd recommend against it. If you really want stock ICS I'd at least install stock plus root, and install a custom and known safe kernel. See this thread in development.
Or, install the custom firmware of your choice from the forums here. For a popular stock ICS rom, there is Semi by AJ Newkirk.

[Q] Won't turn on after system format

Hey guys.
I was doing a full wipe, to reinstall Jellybean Rom, which I had been running for 2 weeks. Thought I'd give it good wipe and update to the latest version.
I wiped.
Then I tried to format the system. This was taking ages, longer than usual, and for some reason I decided to reboot and do it again as it may have got stuck.
Now the tablet won't boot, so I can't get it in to recovery or download mode, as it won't turn on at all.
There was about 70% battery remaining.
Any ideas?
Edit: The only thing I seem able to do is see it as an APX device in Device Manager. I have tried holding down power buttons, volume buttons etc.

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently trying to nvflash it but it seems I have a locked bootloader and therefore can't. Only option seems to be to try and run the battery down as has been suggested.
Well i dont really know what to say ..
Are you still under warranty ?
Did you try posting in the thread where you downloaded the rom from because they might help you ?
Were you using a JB rom or jellybeanICS rom (toldos rom } ?
Sent from my GT-P7500 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I bought it in June, but I don't know if they'll help me?
I haven't tried posting there, as I guess it isn't a rom issue, it is because the system shut down whilst formatting, and perhaps now has nothing to boot off of?
Toldos Jellybean at the time.
I've been trying the command prompts from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130574 but it seems it is locked as I get the 0x4 error.
No idea!
then try asking toldo in his thread , he might help you with something
Asked in the Toldo thread but I believe it is a tab issue not Rom. I don't get why I can't even boot into Download or Recovery. So frustrating.
Got a dead tablet right now, trying to run down the battery and see if it'll switch on after.

[SOLVED]S2 bricked?

Hello, sorry for being dumb, but this is the case.
I rooted my phone, everyone was ok, but I wanted to install a custom kernel, so I wanted to install a custom recovery, so I dowloaded ROM manager from the market and installed it, I selected to install a custom recovery, everything went ok, so I pressed to boot into recovery, and that's where it gets stuck on the S2 logo, won't go past that.
What are my options?
Back to stock via Odin - clean slate & you can then 'start again' (re-root, reinstall custom rom/kernel whatever).
Don't use Rom Manager with the SGS2 at all; it's notorious for doing what you've just experienced (you don't need it - you have CWRecovery for all your flashing/backup/restore/etc needs).
P.S - Bricked phones are exactly that; bricked. They don't boot. If a phone boots, it ain't bricked. There's no such thing as 'hard' or 'soft' bricked. It either tis or t'aint.
Thanks for replying, and good to hear that there is some hope, can you refer to any guide/tutorial of what to do exactly, I don't want to stumble upon something wrong and make things worse.

Need Help

Hello.
I have a samsung galaxy s2 and its been working fine for more than a year. Few days ago, i did a factory reset and now when I power on my phone it stays on the Samsung logo. If i go in recovery, it says CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.2-Siyah. and i have a lot of options. I did wipe data/factory reset and after that completes it powers on and goes in safe mode, i can do stuff for around 30 seconds and then it restarts and stuck on samsung logo again.
I tried flashing stock firmware but Odin does not detect my phone. i have tried on two different computers, they both have the drivers everything, tried on different ports, tried with different cables.
Please Help.
what rom you're on?

1) 'Please use a descriptive thread title'
2) Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General, find it, try as many of the things in that thread as many times as you need to in order to get a successful flash. If you try the stuff in the thread two or three times then come back to this thread & say 'I tried blah blah a few times & still the same', guess what ? Your phone will stay busted. Why ? Because perseverance always fixes these issues unless the phone isn't recoverable. You need to try everything in that thread over and over and over if necessary. There's nothing that isn't in that thread which can be suggested in these situations. Why ? That thread is the 'Bible'.
So...Go...You now have the tools to fix your phone.
i have already seen that thread and tried what it advised but to no avail.

you said it can boot for ~30 seconds
anyway,try booting to recovery:
1.do a factory reset again
2.wipe cache
3.advanced/wipe dalvik cache
4.advanced/fix permissions

Tried but did not work.
Same thing happens, goes into the system, and then restarts after 20-30 seconds and then stuck on samsung logo.
Well,if you can boot, quickly go to phone's settings, scroll down and tap "about phone".Write down android, firmware and kernel versions and post here.
That stuff is irrelevant. OP, you're clearly not doing some things here or not telling us exactly what you did to get the phone in that state (like most people who get into this situation). Service centre.
i said in my FIRST post that after i did a factory reset, when i restarted it got stuck on the samsung logo.
Anyone ?
Please.
Well,if your current rom is messed up and can't use ODIN,you may try flashing a stock based jb rom through recovery.Choose the one you like, follow the instructions and that's it.
Just a suggestion:angel:
Could you please link me to which one i should download. i do not want to mess my phone up even more.
im from uk.

Well,I cannot say which rom you SHOULD try as it's against the rules and is purely your choice.Although I used this one some time ago and really liked it

Just follow the instructions and you're done.
Right...So on one hand you say

What's the point in telling people what the rules are when you go and break them in the next sentence ? Why not just tell people to go read some rom threads & try some roms ? Do you realise how much more likely it is that a n00b will break their phone at some point in the fairly near future when you spoonfeed them everything, which is exactly what you've been doing for the past few weeks, as opposed to pointing them in the right direction & telling them to learn for themselves ?

I don't get you mate. The man asked me to suggest a rom so I did.Honestly,it was the only stock jb based rom I ever tried as AOSP is my home.As much as I hate stock,I know that rom has little to no problems,so that OP won't come back here anytime soon.Which is good.Never wanted to break any rules, but because his phone was in unusable state,I pointed him to (IMHO) the right direction. Is this a bad HELP?
I know I did some things here and there that made some noobs lifes easier. So this means I should always reply by saying:
Hey,there's search button for that!DIY!Troubleshooting thread is not for these kind of questions.Get outta here!!
That's not how I understand HELP.
Anyway, thanks for your opinion, really respect that.
