Can anyone advise, or point me to somehwere that explains the differenc ebetween kernel types and modem types?
I installed Foxhound ROM on my SGS2 but there are several Kernel and Modems to choose from. For the Kernels there are Abyss, Siyah, N.E.A.K and a couple more. For the Modems there is LPS, LPQ, LPX, KI4 and a few others.
I want to pick the best ones possible but cant seem to find details on what the differences are.

you can try any kernel you want and then choose what gives you the best performance or battery life or both
also try out all modem then choose what gives you better battery and network signal , there are some modems works good in some geographical area and you can use any modem and test it

Kernel types are for tweaking cpu, bln, etc. Modems are for the signal from your provider and are based on your location. Try siyah kernel, dorimax or Fluxi kernels.. They are all pretty good.

try searching the forum or google wich modems are used by people in your area that have the same provider.
Most of the time that will be the best for you aswell.
About the kernels .... i agree with the other posters ..... read the kernel related post try what you like and keep what fits you best.
For kernels : u may try siyah, i think its the best among ur list....
For modems: u cant say any modem is the best bcause it depends on which 1 ur service provider in ur country support...just choose the same\modem of ur current SGS2. U can search n find many CF in the forum. Hope this help... Cheers
thanks guys I will do some testing.

Hi all,
I just updated to Villain Rom 3.0 and would like to install the best modem in terms of strong signal (Wi-Fi and GSM in particular) and battery performance but I can't figure out which one to use. I can see a full list here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17967764&postcount=5 but have no idea what the differences are between each modem and whether or not they are correct for my location etc.
I'm on Villain Rom 3.0 (2.3.5), Vodafone Ireland.
Appreciate someone helping me to decipher/understand the various options.
Cheers,
Ben
No change logs no specifics for modems .
KH3 and KI range reputed to be the best .
I would try KH3 .

Does the modem also include the wifi signal ? I read somewhere it's rom related.

Thanks JJ, I'll give KI3 a few days and then switch. If only to a) write up my thoughts on KI3 and b) have a base on which to compare it to KH3
Cheers,
Ben

*Modems do not need to be matched up with firmware like it's done with ROMs and Kernels. For example, a KI4 modem can be used with a KL1 ROM and the other way round. The only thing you need to pay attention to is what model your SGS2 is. 9100 and 9100 modems are compatible across both models. However, 9100 model and US variants are not cross compatible since the devices are designed to work on different bands.
Modem is in the stock rom as well

What JJEgan said. Looks like XWLA4 stock ROM comes with an XXKI4 modem anyways.
thx both for trying to answer
First of all i need xwla4 modem not KERNEL.
Second, I know that it doesn't have to be the same with the rom but i had one with xwla4 and had very good battery life and that's why i want to install again xwla4 modem. I found a thread with modems but not the xwla4 one.

Oops. Sorry. But i don´t know why if i make this question my post would be deleted... There are people that they are not "advance phone users" and simply want read differents reviews...
There are already hundreds of threads on here where roms/kernels have been recommended to people before mods closed them. You only need search for them. That's why these threads are closed. Also because people will have varying experiences using different roms/kernels; nobody has the same phone setup or uses the phone exactly the same.

As stated, do your own research, the 'best' anything is what you find works well for your phone and how you use it.
Please how do I choose a new modem for my device?
I am currently with a modem XXLPQ (from CyanogenMod 10), not know if it's the best option for me because I'm from Brazil (South America) and if there are other more compatible modems, I would like to test.
I appreciate the help.
Write them down on bits of paper, stick them all in a hat and pick one out while blindfolded.
just download and flash different ones.
try for 3 days and then try another
Check you have no side effects when trying them.I had a good modem but my data was sticking until I reset it.

You should know this that modems which work well for one person may not work well with others. So, asking which modem to use isn't useful. You'll have to try one by one to see on which you get a good reception and 2G/3G speeds.
The latest one I believe is the XXLQ6, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. However, latest doesn't necessarily mean the best. Many users like XXLPS, XXLPR, XXLPX, just to name a few.

modems are the radio of the device.
kernals are core information need to run the phone.
modems can can be flashed separately from kernels.
modems vary from rregion to region, you will need to experiment to find the best one for you.
cheeck the 9100G forum for modems that work.
