Hi all,
I just updated to Villain Rom 3.0 and would like to install the best modem in terms of strong signal (Wi-Fi and GSM in particular) and battery performance but I can't figure out which one to use. I can see a full list here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17967764&postcount=5 but have no idea what the differences are between each modem and whether or not they are correct for my location etc.
I'm on Villain Rom 3.0 (2.3.5), Vodafone Ireland.
Appreciate someone helping me to decipher/understand the various options.
Cheers,
Ben
No change logs no specifics for modems .
KH3 and KI range reputed to be the best .
I would try KH3 .

Does the modem also include the wifi signal ? I read somewhere it's rom related.

Thanks JJ, I'll give KI3 a few days and then switch. If only to a) write up my thoughts on KI3 and b) have a base on which to compare it to KH3

Ben

Hi,
Can I flash a firmware with a different modem.
For example:
My baseband/modem is XXKE7 and I want to flash the firmware XXKG2 from the firmware thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) since it's the newest firmware available.
Thanks in advance.
Yes it will either work better the same or worse .
I just have as a matter of fact flashed KG2 .
In that respect KG2 modem is giving me a much stronger WiFi signal at the extremes of range where other modems would have no signal .
measured by speedtest.net not the crappy wifi indicator on the phone .
jje
Will do absolutely no harm.
I flashed my phone too with XXKG2 and have used the FW with both, my original modem software as well as the KG2 one.
Apart from the fact that the KG2 modem indeed seems to be way better, they all worked fine
Thanks for the replies.
I flashed the XXKG2 firmware from the XDA firmware thread and all is fine =)
My modem gets automagically changed to XXKG2 as well.

I am also with FIDO and I should advise you that XXKG1 Modem is the best for that network. I get the highest signal and faster data.
I tried all modems currently with extensive testing.
You could download it from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
assuming you have problems or if you wanna try different modems.
Only my advice tho.
Appreciate the advice.
Thank you
Hi All
Newbie here from New Zealand, I got my Samsung Galaxy S2 a few weeks ago via parallel import. *#1234# shows the following:
PDA: I9100XWKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100OXXKE2
I'm thinking about flashing to get rid of the flickering brightness problem. Samsung NZ doesn't want to help because it's a parallel import.
I have been reading a lot about the flashing and have a couple of questions if anyone could help me.
1.XXKE2 vs. XXKG3?
Apparently the latest firmware upgrade is XXKG3 and Intratech is loving it, what sort of improvements have been confirmed versus XXKE2? Any current problems with XXKG3?
2.Currently the phone has a multi CSC, if I flash to KG3 which CSC should I use?
Thanks in advance
fyi, the latest is KH3 .. not KG3 ..
1. each of the firmware & modem depends on location, some said that XX is drain battery, some said that XX reception is low,etc .. unfortunately, you need to test it yourself..
but .. normally the latest contain less bug..
2. it's always advisable using same firmware (KH3) with CSC for better result.

Thats relatively true best is generally the latest but not always for all phones .
2. it's always advisable using same firmware (KH3) with CSC for better result.
Does not matter what CSC you use as long as it covers your location as it only contains a list of network settings .CSC itself may be numbered later but contents rarely change .
Basics is you want a CSC that covers New Zealand and that can be flashed separate as can a modem if needs be .

Hey guys,
So I rooted my device a while back. I honestly don't remember what I did.
Could it be that I changed a modem / radio firmware or something of that sort? I'm asking because it feels to me as if my 3G connection is very unstable, and while my friends can watch youtube vids when we're driving mine will not connect.
What should i do if this is the case? Do I just need to replace it with another modem firmware?
Kh3 for the win

Mind elaborating on that?

Okay. That's a bit better.
But what's KH3? is that a Kernel?
I'm a noob, would really appreciate getting a more detailed explanation.
My baseband (which is modem isn't it?) is KE7 and my Kernel is KF3.
KH3 MODEM .

Cool. Just so I get this again:
I can update my modem, kernel and ROM each one individually without affecting anything?
Yes mostly interchangeable .

Based on reading some of the threads here on xda, most of the people are using KJ3, KI4 and KI8 and some uses KI3 like me.
My question is that, what is better ROM? KI3 or KJ3?
Based on this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) thread xxKI3 is optimized for battery, furthermore I use the KitchenROm KI3 custom room since it is not far the same from the stock rom plus it is optimized.
Now why most of the themes on the first page are created on KJ3?
Just asking what their difference and whatsoever.
thanks in advance.
KJ3 is newer. I'd use it.
aside from that, is it optimized for battery like ki3? I try to search about this topic but could'nt find one.
Samsung doesn't provide a change log with each firmware, its simply newer and people assume its better and it might just be.
KI3 didn't work well for me, i would recommend a newer version like KJ3 or, in my case, KI4
Both have been great on battery for me. Only upgraded to KJ3 so I could use the New jkay Stuff.

Yeap you are correct, actually most of the themes are Based on KJ3, KI8 and KI4, only few with those KI3 that is why I came to ask myself there difference.
Anyhow, very glad for all the replies.
Keep up
Any chance anyone can extract the KJ3 modem file? They didn't really show up anywhere.

There is no KJ3 Modem. Latest modem available is KI4.

Can anyone advise, or point me to somehwere that explains the differenc ebetween kernel types and modem types?
I installed Foxhound ROM on my SGS2 but there are several Kernel and Modems to choose from. For the Kernels there are Abyss, Siyah, N.E.A.K and a couple more. For the Modems there is LPS, LPQ, LPX, KI4 and a few others.
I want to pick the best ones possible but cant seem to find details on what the differences are.

you can try any kernel you want and then choose what gives you the best performance or battery life or both
also try out all modem then choose what gives you better battery and network signal , there are some modems works good in some geographical area and you can use any modem and test it

Kernel types are for tweaking cpu, bln, etc. Modems are for the signal from your provider and are based on your location. Try siyah kernel, dorimax or Fluxi kernels.. They are all pretty good.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
try searching the forum or google wich modems are used by people in your area that have the same provider.
Most of the time that will be the best for you aswell.
About the kernels .... i agree with the other posters ..... read the kernel related post try what you like and keep what fits you best.
For kernels : u may try siyah, i think its the best among ur list....
For modems: u cant say any modem is the best bcause it depends on which 1 ur service provider in ur country support...just choose the same\modem of ur current SGS2. U can search n find many CF in the forum. Hope this help... Cheers
thanks guys I will do some testing.
