Question on flashing/rooting/etc - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hi All,
I'm new to flashing Android and have a couple questions to make sure I'm doing things right. My goal is to get Flapjaxx's ICS ROM for the 717 Note installed.
Here's the instructions from his OP and my questions in line:
Instructions:
1. Download to sdcard - I assume by SD card this means the MicroSD and not the base storage of the device? And the copy should be in the root of the MicroSD (or the base device if that is the right place?)
2. Reboot to recovery - Got this.
3. Wipe data/factory reset ONLY *ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED COMING FROM ANY OTHER ROM* - Unclear here. Does this mean that if my device is stock I DO or DON"T need to do a data/factory reset? Or that I do always and especially if coming from another rom? Ie do it always (and if so how, using the stock device command for reset/wipe?.
4. Flash Rom - How? I have mobile odin, found out it doesn't support on the 717 yet. I DO have the device rooted. Is there a tool I should put on the device OR will the device auto-flash the ROM after placed in the device and rebooted after wipe? What's the process? I've looked around but haven't found a guide that seems clear (trying to be safe here with my process).
5. Reboot and Enjoy
6. *Bug reports not necessary in this thread* This ROM ships As-Is
7. No this will not do anything to your bootloader.
Thanks in advance

Yea because it clears data that could cause problems with the new software. Always do a factory wipe in cwm and clear cache partition and dalvik cache too
You flash the rom with cwm which can be found in the dev section here. Before ya flash anything I'd do some research here because there are threads with very detailed instructions on the flashing process. If ya run into any snags just post back here and I'll try to help ya best I can

CJ, thanks for the reply. That definitely helps. I was able to finally find the thread I should have found first (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223) that explains the process. I guess I just need to be more patient and search harder
If I have questions I'll definitely post. CWM was the missing link in my process. I think I should be good to knock it out now. Wish me luck!
I flashed my GS2 to the early ICS leak and it really improved the experience on the phone, I can't wait to do the same on the Note!

You must have cwm or twrp recovery. Once you've flashed either one, make a backup of your existing ROM (custom or stock does not matter). Always wipe data/factory reset in recovery. Then select install zip and flash away. Follow the directions carefully no matter which ROM you're flashing. Mobile Odin is useless at this point. You will use Odin on your PC to flash a custom recovery. Once that's done you will most likely never use Odin again. Read up on how to install your custom recovery, boot into recovery, flash ROMs and mods...etc., etc.
Edit: SD card can be internal or external. Your choice.

Thanks guys. I'm all set. Rooted, CWR installed, Flapjacks ICS ROM installed, apps and data restored and loving being back on ICS. I love this phone but no ICS was a killer.
Thanks to everyone on the hard work and help the site gives us users. Much appreciated!

Great to hear. Hope ya have a good experience with it!!

I'm sure I will
Now the big decision is to move from ADW to Apex or not. I think Apex is less of a hog but ADW has some nice features. But I haven't really looked into Apex much yet.
But so far so good.

U need to try appdroids team perfection ics ucle2 rc#2... use with skycis theme ots sick its hot its all note!!
BTW.....APEX!!
sent from team perfections ics rom

So many choices! If it wasn't such a hassle rebuilding (desktop/app data/etc) I'd try a few builds
I am thinking of giving Apex a serious go. I've been doing a lot of playing around with the phone (how can one resist!) to push the envelope a bit and am finding that freeing up additional ram is something I need to work on. For example I've tried using ES File Explorer to playback mkv videos via Moboplayer. It works... for a bit... until the app crashes. My assumption is it's an available memory issue (but I could be wrong) as I hover at around 80-100mb free.
Anyway now you are motivating me. I might just have to do an Adwlauncher backup, kill it and setup Apex and see how it goes
Oh, and Tasker is fun as hell. Love automating the phone. How does anyone survive iOS....

Flashing 3g and 4g radios

I am getting ready to root my bolt. I will use the revolution tool.
I want to flash thunderstick genII Rom. In the instructions they say to flash both radios. Is this needed if the phone being rooted has already been updated OTA? Shouldn't the radios be already updated?
Secondly, if it is safe to flash roms with Rom manager, will it know to flash the two radios?
Thanks!
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Radios are flashed in hboot ONLY! Look for a tutorial in the stickied topics
Sent from my TBolt using my f***king thumbs...
From looking at the original post for the thunderstick genII Rom it is a sense gingerbread ROM. It will use "MR2+" radios most likely (please don't make add the disclaimer... I'm not responsible for you turning your phone into a paper weight). They will be MR2 or MR2.5 etc.
Long story short, you should use what the dev. of the ROM suggests for the radio. It typically gives the best performance, least chance of bugs, and best battery life for the ROM. Follow the instructions in the post using HBOOT (Power on with the volume down pressed).
From the original post:
"install these radios
To do so,
1 - Downloaded the "CDMA" first file below to the ROOT of your SDCARD,
2 - Name the file PG05IMG.zip and reboot to your boot loader.
3 - Then follow the the prompts to install the update. Delete the file immediately after reboot.
4 - Repeat these steps for the second file "LTE". And you will have a upgraded radio that will work great with this ROM."
Not sure if the address space is accessible from CWR for radios, so you have to use hboot. It can be dangerous. Follow the steps, and if it is you first time, do the research!!!! There are much more involved guides.
I'm guessing that since radios and roms are flashed in different modes - hboot and recovery - devs can't include radios?

They wouldn't even if they could. There would be so many pissed users it wouldn't be funny. I'd be one of them. Nobody like flashing radios because its a far riskier deal.
Well to get thunderstick going I need to do both radios.
The tuts for flashing radios made it seem like flashing any other thing. Now you have me questioning doing this. This Rom is what I want from my phone...a tweaked sense rom.
If I'm right CWM let's you get to hboot to flash radios, right. And it let's you get to recovery to flash the Rom.
Jeez I came from a iPhone 3g and Jailbreaking was easy compared to this.

For some reason I've notice a lot of people calling RomManager by "CWM" lately and for some reason it annoys me. ClockworkMod is the "company name" Koush uses to identify his apps/products. The app you are referring to is RomManager and the recovery is called ClockworkMod Recovery.
Anyway, neither CWR nor RomManager deal with hboot. You can place the file on your sdcard and manually boot to hboot (Pwr+VolDwn or the advanced power menu in some roms). Full instructions for this should not be needed here since they are all over the place including the pinned Q/A thread at the top of this subforum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220484
I'm sure this will come off harsher than it was intended. I just wanted to throw those things out there. Anyway, welcome to Android

Thank you for laying all that out there. I really cannot endorse what Absolute_Zero has to say about calling things by their proper names. When people don't do that, it gets VERY confusing when you try to help them.
Concerning ROM Manager, I don't see how it serves any useful purpose. Fixing permissions can be done just as well through a script like ScriptFusion or ClockworkMod Recovery. I know of no ROM dev that endorses flashing, wiping, backing up, or recovering through ROM Manager, which is a nice way of saying DO NOT USE ROM Manager. It's fairly reliable for flashing recoveries, but I've had issues with it even doing that right.
Just follow the instructions I've laid out for flashing radios. I've included all the links to every radio there. If you follow my directions, I can promise you with 99.9% certainty that your radio flash will go perfectly. It's nothing to be afraid of and nothing to really concern yourself with. Just don't go looking for the easy way of doing everything. This isn't a Motorola device and there's a lot more you can do outside of an app than with an app.
Actually being harsh is cool. When I said CWM I meant the recovery. I should have been more clear.
I will stay away from Rom manager and learn to flash the big boy way.
My last question is this...my SD card is pretty messy. What is the best advice to clear out the card after flashing thunderstick?

The best way is to clean it up before flashing. Some ROMs install directories to the SDcard, but those should be clearly named. There's not really anything there that you can do that will render the phone junk. For me, it's just been a process of sorting through all the stuff, backing it up, formatting the card, and dropping the stuff I do want back on it.
Is there an option to format the SD card during flashing?
I have backed up my photos and any documents. After I copy over any videos I took, I would clear it out.
After installing a dozen or more apps, the card looks like a mess.
There's three folders with music in it, etc. Why can't there be an app folder with subdirectories for each app?

You can format it either in CWR, Android, or on a computer.
Rooted today with revolution. Pretty easy but it didn't install clockwork. Had to run it again. I noticed Rom manager doesnt recognize clockwork as installed. I wasn't planning on using Rom manager but was curious about this.
One last question before flashing thunderstick...if something fails and I revert to the nandroid backup, does that revert back to the old radio? I need to flash both radios and want to know if I can fall back to the backup if it fails.
Thanks.

RomManager will only recognize CWR as being installed if RomManager itself is what was used to flash it.
I'm dealing with this same thing (flashing Radios). I recently rooted my device (after having it since release) and froze the bloat. I never flashed a ROM and want to look to see if it's possible to find a ROM for my Thunderbolt that does not need me to change the Radio. If I don't Flash a ROM I'm more than happy with having root and dealing with the crapware and installing apps I couldn't use before. Good Luck. Enjoy your device.

I flashed the 802 radio right after installing NonS3ns3v2 on my Tbolt. Everything went fine and seems to be running smoothly.

[MOD] CWM Recovery to Stock without ODIN

Long time lurker, first time contributor.
After rooting, installing CWM recovery, Saurom, Da_G's kernel and a few tweaks I wanted to wipe and start over (and do some ICS hacking!). Unfortunately I didn't see a really quick way to do it (other than ODIN, what a pain - I'm on linux).
So I wrote a little update script to overwrite existing partitions with stock images stored on the sdcard. But here's the twist, instead of hardcoding everything in the update zip, it uses a property file on the sdcard at run-time.
Check it out, flame away...
Hope someone finds it useful.
I will try it later this week

complete modding has already been accomplished without increasing the flash counter, I have rooted, installed cwm recovery, flashed overclocking kernel by da_g, and I haven't increase the flash counter, and I'm waiting for the tpc v3 to flash that and as long as is on cwm zip format I can flash whatever I want without the worry of the flash counter ever going up. Now that cwm is fully working(except for usb storage)people will make stuff in cwm format, this method would help if it would be necessary to go back to stock in case of a mayor issue, and what's so great about your recovery that you say it blows away cwm?

Yup..including recovery...without the need for adb
That what makes it pretty Much awesome. I have seen the nook guys do this but not many others

I need help !

To make a long story short.
I bought this phone yesterday, dedcided to root, flashed cwm through odin, got a failure so the whole night trying to figure out whats going on and still haven't figured it out yet till now. I kept getting the firmware kies upgrade issue with the yellow triangle.
I posted a help thread on the SGH-1727 section and thats where I also got my guide. The whole time I have been putting in SGH-1727 skyrocket drivers and using odin app for that phone. Since there are a few type of galaxy SII on this forum i got confuse.
My goal is to root the phone, get the nicest JB rom and also a nice kernel which I can port over to this phone. I am not going to even start which best roms or even best kernel, but i just want to get back on track on how to fix my problem first.
As of now im stuck on firmware upgrade kies screen. Which Odin should I use to flash? Should I flash a stock rom first or CWM?
First and foremost: You do NOT flash CWM on this phone, it is included in the custom kernels and each ROM is packaged with one. You can change the kernel afterwards if you so desire. Also, DO NOT use any app labeled CWM or ROM Manager... Just don't. You're likely to create problems for yourself. Nothing against you, it's just the way this phone works.
If you can get back to complete stock, I would do so. After that, read the stickies. After that, read them again. TWICE!
Once you're done with that, use Google to search any questions you may still have. End your search queries with: I777 xda - ALL the information you need is here in these forums and can be found by simply searching. Some things you may have to dig a little, but for the basics, it's easily found.
Trust me, I'm being nice. I'm trying to keep you from being flamed... not guaranteeing its gonna work.
Oh, if you don't find it on these boards, don't use the info.

Lesson learned. I feel bad even one of the people that helped me remote access my laptop to resolved the issue that wasn't resolved.
I managed to go back to stock thanks to creepyncrawler guides. Now basing it off a lot of what I see. This phone has a lot of one click programs. I am so used to HTC builds, but not on Samsung.

That was the only case of confirmed emmc damage that I have seen on this forum. If you want to avoid this possibility, then from stock Gingerbread, which I assume you have if you followed my guide, then flash a custom firmware of your choice. The kernels packaged with the custom firmwares all are safe.
Read and follow the first guide linked in my signature, and you can flash custom firmware without taking weeks to study and learn.

With that being said, NEVER assume that you will be able to use your phone after a flash. Not trying to deter or scare you, but always have everything backed up and anything you really want off the phone (pics etc.) - Some say a FULL WIPE us need between every flash. I agree. It GREATLY reduces your chance of having a bad flash.
So, in short, yes. You seem to be catching on, but in your spare time read up on some more helpful threads and I think you'll be a flashaholic on your S2 soon enough
Also, this device is vastly different than any other. If you have experience with other phones, that's great, but not always helpful.

Always wipe data/factory reset & wipe cache when flashing a different rom than the one you currently have (sometimes when updating a rom to newer version of the same rom, some say data wipe is not needed). Go back into recovery mode by holding volume - & + and the power button and release when you see the second samsung splash screen. You will be able to wipe data and then reboot into SuperNexus if all goes well, if not then re-flash the rom and gapps. Also to prevent lock-ups on SuperNexus I recommend using Siyah 4.1.4 (in siyah thread) or Siyah 4.1.5 (in the semi thread) for a kernel. To do that just go back to recovery and flash the kernel (wiping cache & dalvik) then reboot. Also SuperNexus comes with ROM manager but do not use it, Siyah will install CWM recovery. These are the steps I followed when doing this on my I777.
You should always full wipe when switching roms. Initial boot can take awhile, though. If you hit 30, re try with full wipe

U don't have to wait 30 minutes. I've never had a rom take more than 5 to fully boot up. And as stated always wipe data cache and system when coming from a different rom base or upgrading to a new base.

30 is just my "****s definitely not happening" cut off. The anticipation of potentially having screwed something up leads me to sweat the boot time. I've had a handful of 10-15 minute boots back during broken ics days. Call it fire and forget stress management lol

[Q] What next...???

I'm new to the world of Android and rooting...I have an HTC Thunderbolt with all of the updates and completed the root process using a one-click program found on a different XDA thread. This program allows rooting without any file loss or software downgrades (hope I'm correct??)
With that said...First: how do I verify that my Thunderbolt is rooted? Does the 'SuperUser' app verify the process was successful or do I have to check somewhere else?
From here, what apps would I use to increase phone performance (slow screen refresh, etc.?) and what other enhancements can I change (tired of waiting for ICS)??
Thanks for any help and guidance that can be provided,
ghdroiduser
There's an app called root checker in the market that you could use. As far as enhancements go there aren't very many apps you can get to better performance. You could get a root uninstaller to remove useless apps that you otherwise couldn't get rid of. Best way to get a better phone going is to flash a custom Rom. There are a few roms that have been developed that are ICS but don't have a working camcorder. Although, flashing these roms will cause you to lose your user data...
Sent from my Thunderbolt using xda app-developers app
Will this Work...?
I read about an app called V6 supercharger, is this designed for HTC phones? If not, is there another app like it?
Where can I find out more about how rooting my phone let's me change the configuration? Do I have to uninstall and re-install my apps for the superuser function to take over?
Any help or guidance is appreciated...
Thank you,

I read about an app called V6 supercharger, is this designed for HTC phones? If not, is there another app like it?
Where can I find out more about how rooting my phone let's me change the configuration? Do I have to uninstall and re-install my apps for the superuser function to take over?
Any help or guidance is appreciated...
Thank you,

Hmm... never heard of that app. You don't have to uninstall apps for superuser to take affect although superuser doesn't do anything to typical apps that you would have had before you rooted. I'm really not sure of what you can do on a stock Rom. If I remember, the only time I had a rooted phone with a stock Rom I didn't do anything to it. The best option to better your performance is to install a custom Rom. Make a backup of your stock Rom in recovery in case you need to get back to it. Also, don't take any OTA updates while you are rooted because that will brick your phone and its quite the process to unbrick.

My inquiry from the other day was incorrect...v6 supercharger is a script for improving a rooted phone's memory performance, not an app...that would explain why some people were unfamiliar with the question. When I complete the rooting process, will my my have 'S-root' and what is 'S-root'?
Is this script better than 'smurf' once my device has been rooted?
Additionally, I would like to maximize the Thunderbolt's performance...what would be the next step??
I would like ICS on my phone, however, it seems that Verizon will never get this done...I see there are several roms available for ICS...are there are any roms that do not loose any of the phone's current functionality?? Can I install more than one rom like multiple booting a computer with more than one operating system??
I used a 'one-click' root program from a different xda forum.
HTC Thunderbolt w/ GB 2.3.4, Go Launcher EX
Thanks for any help or instructions that will assist me,
ghdroiduser
V6 supercharger does help with performance. The liquid ics roms are great and the only functionality you will lose is camcorder. Once you have it installed you can over clock the CPU if you want more performance although it really isn't necessary.

Thank you for your answer...Since I do not use the camcorder function, no great loss...
Are all of the Liquid ICS roms the same or is one source better than another?? What will happen to my phone once Verizon finally release the ICS update or any other update for that matter??
Is 'S-root' something that I have to install or configure? Or does it install/configure during the rooting process?
Again thanks for the help,
ghdroiduser
You must be talking about s off. S off is something that should be done during the rooting process to allow for the installation of aftermarket kernels and for changing radios. In the dev section there is a tool called the allinone thunderbolt tool that will do all of that. You really should get it and run that. There are two versions of liquid ics. One is the stock version and the other is jmod which is the one that sounds more up to speed for you. It comes with the supercharger script already in place so you don't have to do that yourself. Once you flash it you won't have to worry about the official release affecting you at all.

I appreciate all of your help...I found this link for the ICS flash 'Liquid ICS *MR2V7'...Is this the most current rom you mentioned above??
If so, once I complete the download what do I need to set this up...meaning the instructions to install the rom....
Thank again for your help...
Before you flash anything reboot into your boot loader by powering the phone down and then holding volume down and power. The screen will come up with some info in the top left corner of the boot loader. Tell me what that is showing.

Alright you're good to go. You do have s off which I wasn't sure of. What you need to do is download the rom OK. To get ready for flashing reboot into recovery by going into the boot loader the way I told you. Once there, press volume down so that it will let you choose something in that menu. Select bootloader. After that it will run a check to see if you have a radio update on your SD card. Once it finishes press volume down to highlight recovery. Press power. Once in recovery you need to wipe data cache and dalvik cache before flashing the rom. This is important. If you don't then it will either not boot or it will bootloop. I don't remember all of the menus in cwm because I haven't used it in so long. Go to the menu that let's you select the file for flashing. If you downloaded it from the phone then it will be in the download folder. Find the file and select it. It should prompt you if you want to flash it. Select yes and there you go. You're off into your first ics rom.

Just to add dont get scared if it takes awhile to boot up once its done flashing and you reboot. Some roms can take a few min to fully boot. So when its on the splashscreen just let it be and let it load all the file you just flashed. Welcome to the world of rooting.

When I download the ROM, will I do this to my phone or on my p/c with a usb cable??
Are there any other precautions I should be aware of??
Also, I saw another post about using 4ext vs revolutionary...any thoughts??

I would suggest using 4ext. Its easier to navigate since the recovery is touch enabled and the menus are organized better. Flashing the rom should be done from the phone although it is possible to do it from the PC I wouldn't recommend you trying that just yet. The main thing to remember when flashing a rom is always do a nandroid backup first. I did forget to tell you that. Also just remember to wipe data, cache and dalvik cache before you flash a rom unless the developer makes it clear that it is OK to flash over the current build.

Not really as long as you wipe your caches and data you should be good to go. You can download the rom on to your phone or you can download on to your PC. Once on your PC you will have to transfer the file to your phone via the usb cable.
4ext is a nice touch screen recovery. So you dont have to wear out your vol rockers and power button. Its easy to install just need to download the app.

[Q] NOOB: Help with removing Cyanogenmod 9 from i717

FIrst let me apologize for being a noob!! But I need help. I bought a used Note i717 that has Cyanogenmod 9 on T-mobile
installed and I am trying to get it back to the standard Samsung/AT&T/Android os. (Either Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich version)
I have been going dizzy reafing thread after thread and watching a hundred videos. I have no idea about this stuff but I know I dont want to pay the phone dr guys hundreds of dollars of I can learn myself.
I downloaded odin, and the tar file for what I believe to be ICS stock rom. What I am needing help with is what kernel file I need to download. Also, if I put theae files on the sd card and restore from it I am not sure which mode to go into?
I was hoping to find a step by step for a complete retard like me but so far my 4 days of searching have found nothing.. Can someone please please help??? Many many thanks in advance!!

Awesome. Thank you so much!!!
Probably a stupid question.. but I download Kies on my laptop and connect the phone to it correct?? Also will Kies get it from T-Mobile to At&t?
Yes download to computer and plug in, I think it will get it back to ATT but im not completely sure
Why even use kies? Just download a vanilla ics Rom that doesn't have the bloatware and flash it from cwm which the phone already has since it has a cm build loaded.
Please for the love of god don't run the ota ics.

Will installing just Vanilla ICS rom get rid of the Cyanogenmod9? The guy I bought it from was using the phone on T-Mobile, and I am on AT&T..
I guess vanilla is the wrong word since touchwiz is there but you get what im saying. Heres a link to a debloated stock Rom from one of our fine devs. Everything you want, nothing you don't.
http://d-h.st/Shk
1.Download to your sd card.
2.hold power button>restart>recovery
3.wait for phone to boot into recovery.
4.verify you can locate your Rom by selecting "install from internal sd card" and locating the zip file which will be located in "sd card>download".
5.if that is successful then go back to the first recovery menu and wipe system three times then wipe cache three times and then under "advanced" wipe dalvik three times.
6.Return to original menu and repeat step 4 but this time go ahead and tap the zip to install.
7.wait for install to finish and reboot.
Goodbye cm9, hello stock.
Fyi ditch samsungs keyboard asap. Biggest piece of **** I've ever seen. Its a bad joke.

OK - so I followed all these instructions and it is rebooting to Cyanogenmod9 still....?? I don't see anything different but it said the install was complete. I think I just wiped my entire SD card... banging my head on the wall.
Maybe I would've been better to pay the pros the 200 bucks they wanted! lol
Is it going to brick the phone if I try it again?
Let me get this straight. You wiped the device and installed the Rom successfully and it still booted into cm9? There's no way. I don't see how that's possible. Not if the Rom installed successfully. Try again. Same procedure. The recovery is clockwork recovery right? The text should be blue
Not to be a jerk but it seems like you don't know much about this, just go back to stock, get used to the phone and then flash a rom

Why would you go back to att stock and then flash a rom? That's nonsensical, just flash the rom I gave you and be done with it. Still waiting to hear back as to whether or not you have cwm recovery installed

If you do the following you should have no problem putting back stock ICS:
1. Factory reset
2. Wipe cache
3. Wipe dalvik cache.
4. Install rom (i recommend putting it on external sd if you have one in)
5. Reboot. Done!
I also recommend using black star ICS, very good rom.

Yes and no. I think I figured out what I was doing wrong though..
I put the zip file in the internal SD instead of the external, and the file I was installing was not a complete version. (No idea what happened in the download but I am going to try again this morning and see if it's successful.)
Thank you SO much!! I'll let ya know as soon as I get through this attempt!
EDIT: I put the zip file on external SD. Did the triple wipe of data, cache and Dalvik. When in Clockworkmod - I select the zip file from the external SD and it tells me No files found. I tried remounting both SD cards and still "no files found".
