Hi,
I recently got my S3 and I watch a lot of series on my old phone, I always convert the movies to the best quality. Are there any recommendations for best quality?
get 720p copies
get mxplayer
play it as it is, this phone should have no problems doing so
best method for converting, is to drag and drop the originals. the built in media player handles everything I throw at it, and any converting will just reduce the detail.
Get Mxplayer and use software decoding, no need to convert even 720p movies.
Regards.

Doesn't software decoding use a lot more battery?

I'm trying to play some converted video files with srt subtitles. I converted some MKV files to MP4 and extracted the subtitles as a srt file with the same file name but no video players I've tried detect the subs. I've tried Rockplayer, Meridian, and Mvideoplayer. Any advice?

Why not just play them as mkv? I mean I know they're bigger if you don't convert them but still it saves you the hassle of conversion. I personally use moboplayer btw.

Because playing the MKV gives me an unsupported file message.

All of my anime, movies, and tv shows play fine as mkv. The 1080p and some of the 720p might not play smoothly but they play. Try a different video player from the market. Also try soft decoding on mobo it has helped on some for me.

Ok i would like to know why when recording in video using the highest settings . How comes the finished file is so big . I recorded a 3 min video yesterday and it was 320ish mb . Why is that when a full feature movie is only between 700mb and 1gb. Does not make sense
Edit. I should add is there anyway to make the file alot smaller but still keeping the highest/best settings

Movies at that size aren't full 1080p, in their rawest form they can hit 40-50GB. This is simply the same with your videos.

That sounds about right ... 3 minutes at 320 meg, if you follow this line of thinking ... 90 minutes would be 9600 , about the size of a retail DVD ... and just to follow, a 1080p Blu-Ray movie can be anywhere from 24 to 50 gig ...
The movies you are thinking of that you may download off the interwebs at 700mb for a two hour movie, are compressed using a codec such as DivX, which sacrifices true quality for size ...
You can't do this on your phone, if you want to copy it to a PC and compress it, then go for it ... But you will end up with a compressed lower quality image ...
This is all common sense stuff, if you are that concerned about how and why digital video works this way , I would suggest doing some research on that subject, on sites dedicated to it ...
I've often wondered this myself,i recorded some vids on NYE in London in a club i was at and the file size for 4 videos was over 2GB which is a lot, ive plenty of space seen as ive a 32GB card so can just copy them onto that
After I received the last update on my Samsung s3 I noticed that there is no audio when I play MKV format. Usually I use Mx video player and it was working fine. Even the default video player was playable but now it give a message" play video data only"

I hope I don't get banned for this since I'm not doing anything wrong but perhaps you downloaded a warez version of MX Player Pro and the update invalidated your copy? or you don't have the Pro copy and got the standard basic version instead. The only player that I know which plays HD MKV files is MX Player Pro so far.

MX Player does not have a DTS codec any more. Download VPlayer from play store. However it will be a 7 day trial, after that it can be unlocked for $2. It works flawlessly.

Thanks it works with VPlayer!!!! and u were right it was from DTS codec. Too bad MX player removed DTS codec because it was the best video player there any way I will check this and I will consider buying it.
I notice slowness when I change it to HW

You can find older versions of mx player on their website. I think it is 1.6f which was the last version to have the dts decoding.
Works okay on my s3.

I looked up Vplayer and saw that it uses less battery usage at better perfromance than MX Player Pro, I'm a bit skeptical but I'm going to check it out thanks for the good suggestion.
EDIT: I tried the trial version and it had alot of bugs, the subtitles are everywhere instead of horizontally aligned at the bottom and it only has a H/W decoder sometimes there's no video only audio. It fixed OP's problem but I was right at being skeptical I can't say that it's better than MX Player Pro. Most of the time it says it's not responding, wait or close but thanks for the suggestion though.

bringing this thread back just to say Mx Player 1.6f (Neon) works perfectly.
Have to get it from the website in the download section, make sure you scroll down and click on the link that says download previous versions.
Confirmed working on ICS
Just got a Galaxy SIII, and I've been trying to watch videos on it. Some work fine, but a few don't, and I don't know if it's the format, but they look like this
i.imgur.com/PZwwA.jpg
i.imgur.com/HiQWY.jpg
i.imgur.com/O6v6w.jpg
That's an MKV file, I also had videos I took on my iPhone that I moved to the Galaxy, and those were MOV format, and none of them work. When I plug the phone into my computer and go to my SD card and play them off of there on my computer, it seems just fine, so I don't know, what could the problem be?
bump, would really appreciate some input
Some video files still have to be converted, or u could try using mobo player. Thats better than mx player

Oh really? Damn, I thought I could just drag and drop, it's why I didn't bother watching videos on my iPhone since I didn't like converting lol
Moboplayer didn't work either :/

So you can play it via s/w? Also try dice player or bsplayer..
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks, bsplayer does work for both file types, dice player did work too but the framerate was choppy. So now I know it isn't the files, but damn, MxPlayer is my favorite out of all of them lol, oh well guess I'll have to live with bsplayer

There are numerous threads that exist already on this topic... MX Player devs are currently working on an update for the N10 but as of now, BS Player is your best bet.
Oh sorry i did not see that when i made the thread .But thanks for the heads up..

Just wondering, bsplayer is better than vlc? Never used bsplayer.
MX Player not really hardware accelerate (certain MKV file got sound issue and can only software render) for Nexus 10 at the moment. I am using BS Player now, it work nicely at Nexus 10.

Rock Player 2 has the absolute smoothest playback on everything, including 1440p.

I still get the 'DTS unsupported Audio Codec' error when I play HD mkv files on MX Player.
The videos plays just fine, but I don't get any audio.
BSPlayer on the other hand works perfectly. I would use that.

You can add the codec to mx player.
Either way, bs player or mx player. competition is good.

BSPlayer works fest for me, MX Player is a bit slower and has problems with some files.
This is in newest update already. I like MX's Interface Bettler though
Even with the update MX player still slightly stutters with mkv files I have tried 720p and 1080p
For me MX better (smoother) plays mkv 720p on software decoding.

Tried that out and you are right much smoother! Wonder why HW decoding stutters so badly compared to SW decoding.
archos video player is pretty good too

Just know that SW decoding will drain your battery much faster than HW.
VPlayer
I have used VPlayer on my other phones and it has worked well. I just bought the N10 and use VPlayer with it. Have you tried it?

Seconded. I've been using it exclusively every since they released it, even bought the "Pro" version. It's a really great app.
