General Xperia Ray FAQ
How do I root my phone with a locked bootloader?
It depends on which firmware version you run, but most of the Sony firmwares only requires you to run a software that will root the phone.
The only firmware for Xperia Ray that is unrootable now is the .64 firmware, the only to root a phone that runs that firmware is to downgrade to the .42 firmware using flashtool.
If you want to root the .42 firmware, just download "Flashtool" and enable usbdebugging. Then just press on the unlocked lock.
http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/
If you want to root the .562 just download the rooting toolkit by canerpense, and then just enable usbdebbuging and follow the onscreen instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600728
If you want to root the .431 its kinda complicated and its not recommended for noobs that dont know anything about flashing firmware. You can find the tutorial here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682224
How do I root my phone with a unlocked bootloader the easiest way?
You can either use the same metods as above, but you can also flash one of these kernels:
Kernel for rooting the .431 firmware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597464
Kernel for rooting the .562 firmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544513
Kernel for rooting the .64 firmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1496081
How do I unlock the bootloader without loosing my warranty or drm data?
To unlock the bootloader without loosing the warranty or the drm data, you should unlock the bootloader using the testpoint method. You can find how you unlock the bootloader using the testpoint here:
http://androidflip.com/unlock-xperia-phones-bootloader-without-losing-drm-data-track-id-working
How do I unlock the booloader the regular way?
If you just want to unlock the bootloader the regular way, you can visit Sony Mobiles site and they should have a tutorial that guides you through the whole process. Here is the link to Sonys bootloader unlocking site:
http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
How do I flash a custom kernel the easiest way?
The easiest way to install a custom kernel is to flash it through Flashtool, but it requires a unlocked bootloader:
1. Download and install flashtool from this website: http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/
!!!Dont forget to install the drivers for Xperia Ray!!!
2. Then plug in your usbcable and hold volume up at the same time to go into fastboot mode.
3. Launch flashtool and click on the flashbutton, then click on fastboot mode. Then locate the custom kernel you downloaded and open it with flashtool.
4. Now flashtool flashes the kernel, but dont unplug the cable before its finished, that will only lead to a brick.
How do I flash a custom rom on a Xperia Ray with unlocked bootloader?
1. Flash a compatible kernel using the method above, then copy the roms update.zip file to you sdcard.
2. Turn off you phone and press the power button, after pressing the power button you should mash the volume down button to access CWM.
3. Now you should go to "Install zip from sdcard", then you should on the option named "Choose zip from sdcard", then you should browse for the rom that you have pu on your sdcard and let CWM flash it.
4. After flashing the rom you should "Factory reset" your device from CWM and Wipe Dalvik cache. Now its time to reboot, the first boot will take a while but thats because its setting up files for using the device.
Unbricking FAQ
How do I unbrick my bricked phone with a locked bootloader?
If you want to unbrick your phone just open Pccompanion and go to Support Zone and press the update button.
Then a popup should appear that says that it cant find your phone, and under that there should be a button named repair. Press the repair button, and just follow the instructions.
You can also download a stock firmware ftf and flash it through flashtool.
How do I unbrick a phone with a unlocked bootloader?
Just flash another kernel through Flashtool and install a a new rom.
You can also flash a stockrom using one of the stock ftfs.
Is there anyway to unbrick a hardbricked phone?
No and yes, but you cant unbrick it at home.
I recommend you to send your phone to Sony so they can repair it for you, because you can mess up things really bad when you are trying to repair it at home.
Accesories
Does iPhone headphones work with Xperia Ray or does it need a adapter?
No, they wont work without a special kind of adapter.
Is it recommended to use a screenprotector?
Yes, its recommended, the Xperia Ray screen gets scratches very easy. If you want a good screenprotector you could choose either "Copter" or "Invisible Shield".
And more reserved stuff
Wonderful tut for newbies... I think it should be sticky.
A small doubt - Factory reset before flashing ROM or after flashing ROM? I usually do before flashing and it worked till now!
[Q] Xperia Ray Blank Screen
Recently, my friend's Xperia Ray doesn't shows any splash screen (SONY) after downgrading ICS 4.0.3 to GB .42 with locked bootloader... then we returned back to ICS 4.0.3 again... but the problem still exists... so we unlocked the bootloader via SE official tech and flash back to GB... still doesn't work... we tried installing custom kernel but can't enter recovery...
Now, it's on GB .42 rooted but no splash screen, no boot animation and deep sleep...
Any solutions, ideas???
Can't try PCC due to overloaded server... SEUS has only outdated ICS but still not working...

Anyway... I have flashed I flashed kernel, baseband and rom and whole firmware (ftf)... the problem still existed exactly like this http://communities-origin.sonyericsson.com/message/211481...
Not good... I have tried custom kernel (the right kernel because it works), but still no splash screen and boot animation but IT SHOWED after accessing recovery...
Why does even affects boot animation??? and even the splash screen?
Plz use this thread instead of asking the same questons again and again, it makes the dev section more clean.

Here is the tutorial for Installing stock 4.0.2.A.0.62 ROM plus root and CWM. I am not responsible or anyone mentioned below for bricking your phone in case, tested on my Xperia ray with unlocked bootloader using S1 tool.
Requirements
Unlocked Bootloader (preferred) although there is a work around for locked bootloader
4.0.2.A.0.62 FTF files
Flashtool
recoveryRay.img by and Rootxperia.zip b1n4ry (for rooting)
CWM
Installation:
How to Install stock 4.0.2.A.0.62 ROM:
Download this stock 4.0.2.A.0.62 ROM. Thank you Aire for providing the link.
After download you will have a zip file. Extract it.
Download flashtool here and extract it.
Create FTF file using flashtool from the 4.0.2.A.0.62 ROM zip you extracted earlier. Now if you don't know how to create FTF files, there's a good tutorial here.
If you successfully created FTF file, you should see a file with extension “.ftf” in the “firmwares” folder inside “FlashTool” folder
Run the executable “X10FlashTool.exe” located in the FlashTool folder
Now click “Flash” button and select flashboot. Now select the firmware from the popup menu. Make sure “Wipe user data” box is checked and then click “OK”.
The application will ask you to put your Ray in flashboot mode, to do this turn off the phone, hold the volume down button while while connecting the USB cable to your computer.
Follow the on screen instruction and your device will reboot. Notice that the reboot process will take longer at first.
How to install Root
Please note that this is only applied to devices with unlocked bootloader. Alternately, you can just install a custom kernel and root using zergrush method but if you want to try the .62 kernel from this stock rom then do this.
Download rootxperia.zip here and place it in your sd card
Enter device in fastboot mode. Turn off phone, hold volume up while you connect the USB cable to computer
Download the recoverRAY.img provided below, you will get a zip file, extract it.
Open folder inside Flashtool where fastboot.exe exists (/FlashTool/x10flasher_lib)
Place the recoveryRAy.img inside the folder
Open command line in this folder
Test if it recognize your device, to do this type fastboot devices, if there is a result here proceed.
Now here's the tricky part, to enter a temporary recovery type fastboot boot recoveryRAY.img
*Notice that we didn't use fastboot flash boot ****.img here because as bin4ry said this recovery is designed to work just as recovery, if you flash it to your device it will NOT boot system anymore! This is just a temporary recovery for you so be careful not to flash it.
Now wait and your phone will reboot, you will see the FREE XPERIA splash screen and your device will now enter temp CWM recovery
On your phone choose install custom zip, locate the rootxperia.zip you added earlier in your SD card and flash it.
Reboot, your device is now rooted.
*to root your device with locked bootloader, they say you can install previous stock kernel and root using zergrush method.
How to install CWM
Download this then extract
Make sure you enabled USB debugging, and also you need to set Screen timeout to 10 minutes so you don't miss the superuser promt
Run install-cwm1.cmd from the folder
Follow screen on screen instruction, reboot.

Aire said, his current kernel supports .62 but they are currently working for repack based on this new firmware.
I haven't tried installing any custom firmware at the moment, I want to test this stock firmware for changes and improvement especially the baseband and battery consumption.

UPDATE 2: SEUS update won't brick our phone if it uses the Testpoint method O what a happy day it is.. Let's see if i can flash aire kernel back.
is that a global version or what ? some people said, that version has some bugs..
can we root this version with the new DoomLord v4 Root ?
from the Arc forum, i found that they can root their device with .62 firmware just by using flashtool.. can we do that so ?
thx

The firmware is provided by Aire, however if you encounter ftf generic firmware, it will be nice if you post it here.
As to bugs, I'm using this firmware for a day now and I noticed improvement in battery and speed, no bugs so far. I haven't tried the doomlord v4 root, but rooting via recovery is easy.

If your bootloader is still locked you can not root your device using that method. The only work around is to install previous kernel and root using zergrush method.

Thank you "idareyoutoclickthis" and "hansip87" for your replies.
In fact I had rooted my Ray earlier 4.0.2.A.0.42ver using the zergrush method using DooMLoRD_v4_Root Which I lost when I upgraded to 4.0.2.A.0.62ver. Now DooMLoRD_v4_Root won't work with 4.0.2.A.0.62ver update.
Now what about the bootloader thing? Sorry for being so dumb. Can you please elaborate a bit? I've got only got to the point wherein i checked the status using the service menu (*#*#.....#*#). It only says Rooting Status: Bootloader unlocking allowed: Yes.
What do I have to do now? Please help.

Indeed .62 is the latest built which include alot of improvements specially on batter issue.
If you don't want custom rom and kernel and is contented with the stock ROM and kernel then you don't need to unlock your bootloader.
to root your device, you need to flash stock 4.0.2.A.0.42 kernel only, you can do this with locked bootloader and root using zergrush method.

Hello,
I have unlocked my bootloader using official method on my neo v. It has Stock 2.3.4 GB with 4.0.2.A.0.69 version, So i cant root it. Now what should i do? i want to put pureness rom in my mobile. So my question is if i flash knight elf kernel then would my stock GB boot up after that ? so that i can put CWM and make a backup of stock and then i can also install the Rom by CWM. What do i do?

Before i started to mess with my phone, I read pages and pages, for few days. You just searched 1hour(based on time of your posts).
Put a bit effort and inform yourself.
Information is out there, convert it into knowledge.
Maybe its not written in custom kernels thread, since that's general knowledge, but 99.99% of custom kernels already have recovery.

sent from my vacation
They most definitely are but as your either too lazy or too stupid to find them I answered below.
All custom kernels include cwm, so you flash a gingerbread kernel to keep your existing rom, make your backup, then flash whatever takes your fancy and the appropriate kernel for whichever rom, there is no universal one.

just install a kernel using flashtool, some kernels already have cwm

Instead of taking the risk of flashing knight elf just hotboot it using fastboot! Type the command fastboot boot boot.img( the kernel name!)
Fastboot reboot
The kernel will be booted just once, so directly open the recovery n flash the rom !
P.s. I am not sure if ice cream Pureness can be flashed from gb! I think u first need to upgrade to stock ics....

First at all, if you unlock your bootloader you should know what you are doing. Unlocking bootloader is not like rooting, rooting can be easily undone, unlocking the bootloader not.
There is something you should know regarding to phones and computers: If you don't know what you are doing then DON'T DO IT.
There are plenty of topics about rooting and installing custom ROMs just read.
According to the pureness rom thread it even works on locked bootloaders.

No,
I answered your question correctly,
It appears you asked the wrong question!
If you want to get into recovery mode you keep pressing the back key (Or if that doesnt work the volume down key, or if that doesnt work keep pressing the screen) when you see the sony logo after turning the phone on.
Of course you must have installed a RECOVERY to do this.
Rooting is not the same as unlocking bootloader. You mean recovery mode and you probably mean you have rooted your phone and NOT that you have unlocked the bootloader

There is no factory recovery, you have to install it yourself.
Goto the sticky threads in the dev section and start to read,
First, download flashtool, found in the first sticky thread in the dev section.
Second, Install recovery via flashtool or by flashing a custom kernel (Which you can do if you have unlocked your bootloader and can get into fastboot mode)
Third, install pureness via recovery.
PS, if you have NEO V you dont need a custom kernel for pureness so you can install recovery via flashtool and then the rom, but if you have NEO then you need the alliance kernel which requires unlocked bootloader, fastboot and a PC

is overclocking works in iccream pureness
Switch off your phone , press the power button and keep pressing the volume down button when you see Sony Ericsson for the first time until you see CWM(not the logo/boot animation , the SONY ERICSSON screen which appears first) task COMPLETE

Yes, but you need a custom kernel for that, and that means unlocked bootloader and fastboot and PC
ffs, read a sticky thread

I got the problem with my phone too a long time ago when I'm in a stock Rom with root access,CWM and bootloader unlock, when I relock,my phone won't reboot...
The solution is to flash a new stock Rom,and the problem will gone
Sent from my SK17i using xda premium
Instead of using the relock bootloader.ftf have you tried doing the procedure using the stock firmware and ticking the relock bl option?
Well SEUS saved my phone , cause i was samsung user (haved mini pro as my last SE phone) i was totaly out of this complicated things on Sony . Did repair from SEUS and phone booted ...
Now what i want is to upgrade my phone to newer ics now on 431 .. Is it best to change SI number and then lock bootloader and upgrade officaly or just to flash via flashtool
?
Thank you
There is no advantage in one option in respect to the other., If your bl is unlocked i would suggest keeping it that way in case you will want to make changes in the future, it just makes things easier...
After you flash the relock bootloader ftf you will have to flash the stock rom onto it, otherwise it has no "OS to run from" since the one you gave it is the unlock bootloader.

No, you flash the stock rom and flash the relocking_bootloader ftf from someguyfromhell's thread

I have a Xperia U --- OS :Android :- ICS 4.0.4 (stock)
(unroot & locked bootloader) build number :- 6.1.1.b.1.54 (stock)
kernel :- 3.0.8+.... (stock)
my phone not root or unlock the bootloader ,but i want to install a jellybean stock rom by DevSwift1 .I download the flashtool and install it and the drivers,i download the rom,how do i do next steps,i found that i can`t root my phone via flash tool with this firmware(6.1.1.b.1.54 ) it said i have to flash a 6.1.1.b.1.10 kermel to root, and rom install instruction said flash another kernel to install the rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2326515) .
1) how do i install the CWM recovery,i saw that Xperia u not support the rom mannager app. ?
2) is this [Kernel][Dec 04]Experimental v11a[JB 4.1.2] kernel pre install the cwm recovery ?
3)can i back up my current rom nad stock recovery how ?
4)your thoughts about devswift 1 rom ,i mean is it bug free and stable rom ?
5)tell me how to flash the rom ?
first answer my quetion (please put the numbers) secondly I need step by step, stock rom install guide from root to flash the rom....and don`t tell me just flash, pleas explain it futher,i mean bit more, this is my first time in xda and flashing a rom.(i got the boot unlock key)
guide it should be like this(IT easy to understand)
Eg:-
1)step, Root
> ***********
> ************
2)step, unlock boot loader
> ************
first of all choose a kernel and download it
second unlock your bootloader
after that install zip from sd card
finally choose devswift1 rom if you have problems with those pm me
you will get used to it and install every rom you like
i hope so
Prerequisite: go and unlock your boot loader. By unlocking your boot loader it saves you a lot of time in the future when you're flashing Roms since it will allow you to flash a custom kernel.
1) don't use ROM manager. CWM recovery is built into all custom kernels.
2) look at 1).
3) recovery is built into the kernel. backup can be done through CWM, it is pretty obvious once you are in there (volume for navigation, power for select)
4) I am ex-sony user but I've never touched this ROM but honestly everybody's opinion of a ROM will be different so try out different ones and to you see which is the most bug free and stable. To me I do not care about stuff like WiFi or HDMI because I never use it, but to some people it might be a major problem. So its a bit subjective.
5) instructions are included in the OP. Follow it VERY strictly (remember to flash the kernel, and remember to wipe before installing)

The link to the ROM is broken, fix it.
If it's a stock rom you do not need to unlock bootloader just flash stock kernel as said root and install recovery.
So you want to install devswift jb?
Step 1
Unlock your boot loader at http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com
Follow the instructions there and unlock it.
Step 2
Download a kernel that includes cwm recovery.
Step 3
Download devswift jb
Step 4
Boot into recovery
Step 5
Follow thread instructions and flash!

For your info, this kernel is for jb so you need to flash an ICS kernel. If you flash a jb kernel it will end it in brick.

OK so you first of all, unlock your bootloader.
Then, you visit the devswift's jb thread, download the ROM and the kernel he asked you to flash.
Next, you flash the kernel via fastboot. Now, you boot into recovery and flash the ROM which is now supposed to be in your SD card.
Now you wipe data, cache and dalvik. Then, you flash the ROM. Next you reboot and let it settle.
Actually after unlocking the bootloader you can just follow devswift's instructions and nothing will go wrong.

hey man, you can unlock your bootloader in a simple step, you don't need to install tha sdk to your laptop or pc
you said that you already have a flashtool, and downloaded and installed drivers
note that if you unlock your bootloader the files will be gone (as in all file on phone and internal)
follow this step:
1. go to this site and get the code http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ (click "start unlocking the boot loader", then click "continue", click "yes i'm sure", check the boxes and click "i accept", enter your name, imei (note: remove the last digit coz its only need 14 digits), enter your email, and later on they will send you for the unlock key, save it safely)
2. open flashtool, connect your device in usb debugging mode, check it on the settings
3. click the BLU at the top at the right of the flashicon
4. later it will ask you to disconnect your device, and power off it
5 reconnect your devicein the usb cable in FLASHMODE. (hold the volume down button while connecting to usb cable)
5. Againconnectt your phone in FASTBOOT mode. (hold volume up while connecting to usb cable)
6. It will prompt a window with your IMEI number, insert your unlock key and click "unlock".
wait to finish and reboot it's done, hope i help you :good:

I had troubles the first time unlocking bootloader before on my Xperia SOLA the flashtool wasn't working to unlock. If flashtool doesn't work there is another way or other ways(I think) to unlock bootloader which happened to me. As I remembered I used a command on command prompt.
